The long-awaited New Zealand uprising against Australia

Ravindra, Mitchell, Latham, Henry and Sears all played crucial roles as a fantastic Test match unfolds in Christchurch

Alex Malcolm10-Mar-2024The first-ever New Zealand men’s Test team to beat Australia gathered at Hagley Oval the night before this Test match to celebrate the 50th anniversary of that momentous victory in Christchurch in 1974.There was a question put to the panel of six players from that side who attended the function whether they were aware of how monumental it was to get over the hurdle against Australia and Jeremy Coney interjected, saying it had been building for a while and it didn’t feel like a big deal.New Zealand might finally get over the hurdle tomorrow against Australia after their best day of Test cricket against them in 13 years. And the signs have been building both from New Zealand’s standpoint, that they could match it with their big brother in this series, and also from Australia’s, as the increasing alarm bells on their batting have become blaring sirens. The crowd at Hagley arrived on day three hopeful, but nervous about what might unfold. When Australia visits England, the chants of “same old Aussies, always cheating” are inescapable. When Australia visits New Zealand, the polite locals can be heard whispering “same old Black Caps, always wilting”.Related

  • Henry and Sears new ball surge gives New Zealand hope of famous win

  • Matt Henry, New Zealand's man of steel, drags his team back into the contest

Those whispers became murmurs when Tom Latham was caught behind via the inside edge off a marauding Pat Cummins. New Zealand were three down and only 61 in front, with memories of their fourth innings collapse in Wellington fresh in the mind given it was only seven days ago.But two guys who are unencumbered by the weight of historical failures against Australia dug in. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell had taken it to Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup in Dharamsala with a spectacular partnership that almost led to a miraculous victory. They threatened briefly in Wellington too, showing signs they could handle Australia’s vaunted attack on a tricky surface without quite going on with it.Here they sustained it over a long period of time with incredibly disciplined batting. There was no wilting. Australia’s bowlers did not bowl badly, but they could not penetrate as the pitch became more benign the older the ball got. Ravindra cashed in on width. Mitchell pounced on anything overpitched. Both were aggressive against the spin of Nathan Lyon. They stuck to their game plans fastidiously and the crowd’s belief built with every run.Tom Latham absorbed the new-ball pressure to help his team-mates out•Getty Images”I thought they played brilliantly,” Latham said after play. “Obviously losing myself early on in the day, we could have potentially seen ourselves losing a few more but I think the way they were able to absorb a little bit of pressure initially and then eventually put it back on them, they showed a lot of intent and just scored in their areas and made the bowlers come to them.”Although Latham was disappointed with his own dismissal, he deserved a lot of credit for laying the foundation for Ravindra and Mitchell. Unlike that duo, Latham has been worn down by Australia, averaging just 27.45 against them in 20 innings. But he bucked that trend with a vital 73. Had he not absorbed 168 deliveries, Ravindra and Mitchell would not have started together against a 55-over-old ball. Latham’s innings was a sign that the Black Caps were starting to exorcise their demons against this Australian attack.”They’re relentless really,” Latham said. “The way they bowl, and hitting that back of a length, they don’t give you much. It’s about trying to stick to a plan as best you can and waiting for them to come to you as much as possible. And I think when you’re presented with a scoring opportunity, it’s about trying to put the pressure on them and take that opportunity as much as you can.”Australia’s attack hit back with the second new ball. Josh Hazlewood delivered a peach to remove Mitchell. Cummins produced a corker to dismiss Ravindra. Tom Blundell slapped a long hop from Cameron Green straight to cover. Six down and only 202 in front on a good pitch, “same old Black Caps, always wilting”.But then a sign of Australia’s cracks. Until the second evening, when Alex Carey spilled Latham, Australia had caught everything in the series. Scott Kuggeleijn, on 2, nicked Green to Marnus Labuschagne at third slip and he spilled it.Kuggeleijn responded by smashing 44 to lift the lead to 278. New Zealand crowds have shown Kuggeleijn complete apathy throughout this series. Every time he has been announced over the PA system as the new batter or bowler there has been no acknowledgement from the fans whatsoever due largely to his off-field history. But after clattering a few boundaries, the PA announcer informed the crowd it was his highest Test score, and there was an eruption of applause. The crowd were fully involved on a humdinger of a day in Christchurch•Associated PressThen their talisman in this series, the man with a steely resolve and a steel back, Matt Henry rose to the occasion again. He pinned Steven Smith lbw again, and Smith took yet another review with him to provide further evidence that he has very little awareness of where his off stump is right now. Henry prised out the obdurate Usman Khawaja. Tim Southee had dropped a key catch in Wellington, this time he held a screamer to his left at third slip.In between Henry’s strikes, Ben Sears bowled with fire. It was another example of a scarless youngster taking it to Australia. He had Labuschagne dropped at first slip after squaring him up in a familiar fashion. But he got him two balls later with a return catch off a leading edge. The crowd was at fever pitch now. It wasn’t quite Eden Park with the All Blacks running roughshod over the Wallabies. But it was Christchurch lifting their Black Caps to new heights against the Baggy Greens. When Green chopped on, unable to combat Sears’ extra bounce, Hagley Oval erupted. Australia were 34 for 4 chasing 279.”Whenever a crowd gets in behind you there’s a bit of adrenaline there and I guess it’s trying to make use that home advantage,” Latham said. “They were fantastic and hopefully we can see that here tomorrow as well.”The game is far from over, with Australia’s two most destructive players still at the crease. New Zealand’s discipline got them this far and further discipline is required to ward off the skeletons from surfacing. But the signs are all there that a 13-year drought against Australia, and a 31-year drought against them at home, could be coming to an end.

If Ben Stokes is not interested in the Test captaincy, then England are in big trouble

From appointing a strong captain to picking and nurturing a viable XI, the challenges facing the ECB are many, and it isn’t moving fast enough

Ian Chappell24-Apr-2022Failed England skipper Joe Root endured the unfortunate nickname “Craptain” at his home county Yorkshire. The England hierarchy should have taken more notice of that unedifying sobriquet.Root’s self-inflicted demise preceded the announcement that former Kent and England player Rob Key was taking over as managing director of the England and Wales Cricket Board. The two events are linked, as the first announcement at least ensured Key wouldn’t be making a polarising decision as his initial task. However Key’s good fortune doesn’t alter the point that the ECB is not good at moving quickly to reverse an untenable decision. This is not a strong ECB trait; it never has been.Related

  • Joe Root, the captain who wasn't enough

  • Rob Key named England's new MD of men's cricket

  • How Rob Key's vision for England reboot might look

  • Ben Stokes offers Joe Root 'love, respect and support'

England were going backwards under Root, and one of Key’s first jobs will be to improve that ingrained and negative attitude. The fact that we are still discussing Root’s resignation and his possible successor is proof of the ECB’s sluggishness in rectifying a poor decision. It was obvious early in Root’s reign that the captaincy and he weren’t a match. The choice of players to be a reasonable England captain is very limited and this is also an indictment of the ECB. There should be a few ready replacements available in the first XI.Before the announcement of Key’s appointment, there were a number of suggestions about who could take over if Root was deposed.Stuart Broad is an intelligent, well-spoken player, but he should not be a captaincy consideration. He’s now too old and maintains a conservative streak, especially when it comes to field placings for his own bowling.Jos Buttler is not a Test wicketkeeper; he has no obvious place in the first XI. It’s hard enough to win Tests against a good team when you are playing level at XI-a-side, never mind prevailing when you are asked to perform while short-handed – just ask Mike Brearley. There’s only one viable captaincy option in the best XI and that’s allrounder Ben Stokes. If he seriously isn’t interested in the job, then England are in big trouble. To question Stokes’ viability based purely on the inferior captaincy of previous star allrounders is indefensible. Stokes has the fire in his belly and the positive approach to be successful. However, that alone doesn’t guarantee success.Whoever accepts the appointment, his initial job will be to make a poorly performing England side better. That is a captain’s job – to improve any team’s results. This shouldn’t be hard, as England have some good, underperforming batters. It was also a trend under Root that England suffered great misfortune with their genuinely fast bowlers, especially Jofra Archer.Nonetheless batters Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence possess a lot of skill but need encouragement to display it regularly. The same applies to offspinner Dom Bess, and to have not given an opportunity to the capable legspinner Matt Parkinson is nonsensical. If Stokes does accept the job, he may be the beneficiary of Parkinson’s evolution if he provides a strong voice at the selection table. And while he’s at it, he could overcome the fast-bowling shortage by encouraging Jamie Overton in his endeavours. There’s no doubt Overton has suffered from multiple injuries, but his genuine pace, even at under-age level, has been poorly handled on the county circuit.English cricket has a distorted affection for correct technique. If Stokes is appointed and then can redirect this trait into more positive encouragement of talented players, he will have done his country a huge favour. If chosen, Stokes shouldn’t be awarded a vote at the selection table – it’s not desirable – but if he presents a good argument, that will be sufficient.Key faces many demanding tasks ahead and he’ll need to maintain his “I have a mind of my own” attitude in the face of ECB ineptitude. However his first job – appointing a viable England captain and then supporting him fully – will be a really important task.

Yankees Sign Kenta Maeda to Minor League Contract

The New York Yankees are adding a veteran pitcher to the organization, having agreed to sign former Los Angeles Dodgers standout Kenta Maeda to a minor-league contract, according to a report from MLB Japan.

Maeda, 37, has spent the past two seasons with the Detroit Tigers, spending time in both MLB and the minor leagues. In 2025, he's made just seven appearances for the Tigers, logging a 7.88 ERA with eight strikeouts and six walks in 8.0 innings. He started 17 games last season and has a 6.09 ERA.

In his prime, Maeda was a reliable mid-rotation starter. In his best season in 2020, when he was with the Minnesota Twins, the Japan native finished as the runner-up for the American League Cy Young, losing out to Shane Bieber. That season, a shortened 60-game campaign due to the outbreak of COVID-19, he had a 2.70 ERA with 80 strikeouts and 10 walks across 66 2/3 innings and 11 starts.

It's not clear if the Yankees intend to bring Maeda to the Bronx, though he figures to start out in the minor leagues for the time being.

Abdur Razzak resigns as selector to contest in BCB elections

Razzak collected his nomination papers to stand as a director candidate from the Khulna division on October 6

Former left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has resigned as a Bangladesh national selector after deciding to contest in the upcoming BCB elections. Razzak, 43, collected his nomination papers to stand as a director candidate from the Khulna division on October 6.Razzak played 13 Tests, 153 ODIs and 34 T20Is for Bangladesh, and remains the third-highest wicket-taker for his country in ODIs. He is one of 61 nominations for the 23 directors’ position that will be contested in the upcoming BCB elections. The general members body, known as the councillors, will elect 23 of the 25 board directors, and the BCB president will be elected from that pool of 25 to serve a four-year term. The most prominent candidates are the incumbent BCB chief Aminul Islam and Tamim Iqbal, who have both announced that they will contest for the board president.”I had the honour of playing for the national team for 14 years and the privilege of serving as a national selector for over four years,” Razzak, who has been a selector for the Bangladesh men’s team since 2021, said in a statement. “I believe the time has come for me to step down from this position to explore the possibilities of contributing to the game that has given me so much, on a larger scale if the opportunity presents itself. I feel this is the right thing to do.”Following Hannan Sarkar’s resignation in February last year, Razzak was one of two members in the selection panel alongside chief Gazi Ashraf Hossain.Reflecting on Razzak’s tenure as a selector, Ashraf praised his colleague. “He was an invaluable member of the panel and brought his undoubted experience and vision to the selection process,” Ashraf said. “We thank him for his contribution and wish him the very best for the future, which we hope will remain closely connected with Bangladesh cricket.”

Hetmyer, Motie help Amazon Warriors finish second for playoffs

They registered their second straight win to seal their place in Qualifier 1, against St Lucia Kings

Guyana Amazon Warriors 189 for 6 (Hetmyer 68, Sampson 50, Rutherford 2-35) beat Barbados Royals 125 (Rutherford 27, Motie 5-21, Joseph 2-18) by 64 runsGuyana Amazon Warriors shot up to second place to end the league stage of CPL 2025 with their second win on the bounce, this one by brushing aside bottom-placed Barbados Royals. Shimron Hetmyer turned his form around with 68 off 39 balls, Quentin Sampson continued his fine form with 50 from 36 deliveries, and Gudakesh Motie bagged his maiden five-for in T20s to script Amazon Warriors’ commanding 64-run win.By finishing second, Amazon Warriors will now face table-toppers St Lucia Kings in Qualifier 1 on September 18, a day after the Eliminator between Antigua and Barbados Falcons and Trinbago Knight Riders.Against Royals, Amazon Warriors started steadily after being put in to bat, moving to 41 for 1 in the powerplay. It was then that Sampson started hitting sixes regularly even as Amazon Warriors lost Ben McDermott and Shai Hope. Hetmyer, coming into this match after two consecutive ducks, also took the aerial route, not demotivated by Sampson’s dismissal for 50.Hetmyer also benefitted from a life, dropped by Kadeem Alleyne on 47 before reaching his fifty off 32 balls. Romario Shepherd and Dwaine Pretorius fell in consecutive overs but Hetmyer helped Mazon Warriors collect 30 runs off the last two overs to power them to 189.Royals’ chase never got going as their top four batters failed to score more than 15 each. Pretorius removed the openers, and Shamar Joseph uprooted Rassie van der Dussen’s leg stump with his first ball fired in at 143.3kph. That left them 28 for 3, and they were going at under run a ball.Shaqkere Parris and Sherfane Rutherford staged a comeback with a partnership of 55 off 46 balls, but Joseph struck again when he trapped Rutherford lbw. Once Imran Tahir had Rovman Powell caught for 1, it was all about Motie. He struck twice in the 15th over and twice in the 19th, when the wickets of Kofi James and Zishan Motara finished the game.

How the new wide rule in white-ball cricket will make batters up their game

By giving bowlers a little leeway down the leg side, cricket will bring new skills and forgotten strokes into play

Abhinav Mukund13-Aug-2025After the thrilling finish in the Oval Test earlier this month, Shubman Gill said that nothing should be changed in terms of the Test cricket playing conditions. Rightly so, with all the games in the England-India series going the full distance. But what about the other formats? The ICC has made a few changes in their playing conditions for white- ball cricket. One change in particular, which is to be trialled from October, has piqued my interest. This relates to the wide-ball rule. This change, which aims to provide a certain amount of wriggle room for a bowler when faced with a batter moving around in their crease before or during a delivery, says that the position of the batter’s legs at the point of delivery will be used as the reference point for a wide. Further:Related

  • ICC changes two-ball rule in men's ODIs and concussion sub protocols in all internationals

  • MCC changes law to make boundary catches with 'bunny hops' illegal

[…] A ball that passes the popping crease between the leg stump and the protected area marker [will not be] called a Wide. To help with this, the protected area marker line will be extended to the popping crease and act as a guide for the umpires.

Any leg side delivery that passes behind the batter’s legs and outside of the line at the time the ball reaches the popping crease may still be called a Wide. Previously, a wide had been called for a delivery that would not have been called wide if the batter had retained their normal batting position.

Effectively, a ball that passes just a little behind the batter’s legs will not be ruled a wide. But before we get into the details, I want to talk about the existing playing conditions. (The Laws of Cricket and the ICC’s playing conditions are interconnected, with the latter supplementing and sometimes modifying the former for specific competitions.)The wide law as it stands currently states that if the ball passes wide of where the striker is standing, or has stood at any point after the ball came into play for that delivery (and if it would also have passed wide of the striker standing in a normal batting position), it should be given a wide. And while a wide is called as soon after the ball passes the batter’s wicket as possible, it is considered to have been a wide from the time the bowler entered their delivery stride. So, according to the Laws, the movements of the batter during the delivery are taken into account for adjudging a wide – which gives the batter leeway to move about their crease to possibly attempt to manipulate a wide call in their favour. In contrast, the ICC’s new proposed playing conditions state that the ball needs to pass within the protected area marker on the leg side when it goes past the crease. This is a fixed reference point. If the ball passes close to the pad near the batter’s legs and moves away afterward, outside the protected area line between that point and the bowling crease, it will be called a wide.Ashwin KumarIn the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Premier League, a similar wide law was trialled, but using the framework of the Laws of cricket. A three-point system was used to judge wide calls:

  • Where was the batter standing at the point of the release of the ball?
  • How close to the batter was the ball when it passed them?
  • How close to the stumps was the ball when it went past them?

This ensures that, even if the batter was moving all over the place before the ball was bowled, the wide call was based on the position of the batter at the point of the bowler’s release. How did the new rule play out in the TNPL?In the 2023 tournament, 319 wides were bowled; in 2024, 311; and in 2025, 275. So there was a significant drop in the number of wides called this year, under the new rule. But surprisingly, that did not impact the scores at all; rather, the scores were higher. In 2023, 9570 runs were scored. In 2024, this grew a little, to 9659. And in 2025, it went up more substantially, to 10,048. In a power-hitting, flat-batting world, it was wonderful to see the batters adapt and play the leg glance or flick against the ball going down leg. You don’t often see those shots in a T20 game.Did the new rule give an advantage to the bowler?T Natarajan, who has played multiple years of IPL and won the TNPL title with the IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans this year said, “There is a definite advantage in terms of bowlers who have control – especially in the death, when the go-to delivery is a wide yorker. The stump yorker comes into play with this [new] rule, as it gives you the margin of error to miss your line by a few inches.” This puts doubt in the batter’s mind, he said. “It adds an element of variety in your bowling.”Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy thinks the rule presents fast bowlers with more of an advantage than it does spinners. “While the pacers can add a lot more variety with a yorker or bouncer, the only advantage I had was if I got the googly slightly off target and it beat the batter on the leg side – it wouldn’t be called a wide. Otherwise, spinners who have the ability to bowl the yorker can use it to their advantage in a T20 game.”Batters win you sponsorships, bowlers win you championships. The T20 game, in particular, is built on batting exploits and the long sixes that batters hit. As fans, we generally tend to want to see more sixes being hit and not lower scores.Did the new bowler-favouring rule mean we saw fewer sixes this year in the TNPL? Surprisingly not: 418 were scored in 2024, 463 were scored this year. Batters found a way to adapt. The battle between bat and ball was heightened thanks to this rule. The ICC has announced the revised rule will come into effect from October on a trial basis for six months in ODIs and T20Is. In ODIs, with two new balls for the first 34 overs (another new rule) we might see bowlers attempt to swing the ball without fear of being called wide for going fractionally down the leg side. We might see reverse swing attempted a lot more at the death. Tactically, having a leg-side-dominant field in the middle overs could be an option for captains, as you are allowed only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle in that period.Batters will need to work on their leg-side game – not many have the leg glance or flick in their repertoire because of the strong hold that flat-batting has on the game. There will be a definite need for batters to alter their technique ever so slightly if they want to succeed against a bowler who has good control.Personally, I would like the ICC playing conditions to mirror the Laws of cricket, and account for the batter stepping out or moving around in the crease before the ball is bowled, without just making it a standard rule of judging whether the ball passed inside the protected area markers or not. This could, however, make it a nightmare for the umpires, who will have to note when the bowler starts his delivery stride, and also keep in mind where the batter was in his stance when making their decisions. In the TNPL and IPL you are allowed to call for the DRS for wides; in an international game you are not. I am pretty certain this will change soon, though the pace of play may be affected. Certainly the modified rule in the ICC playing conditions will have an impact in deciding the results of games. As a batter myself, I am overall in favour of the new rule. It provides an exciting element, especially in the closing stages of a T20 game, bringing an element of unpredictability to what a bowler can do, without the fear of being penalised. It gives bowler and batter another layer of skill to display. I won’t be surprised if we have games decided on one or two legal deliveries that previously might have been called wide.

Frank can ease Sarr injury blow by unleashing Spurs' "mentality monster"

The international break has provided Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank with a two-week break to prepare for the North London derby clash with Arsenal next weekend in the Premier League.

Spurs were held to a 2-2 draw with Manchester United last time out in the top-flight, thanks to a last-gasp Matthijs de Ligt goal, and they have only won one of their last four matches in all competitions.

This means that the Lilywhites will need to improve their performance if they want to come away with a result against their bitter rivals, and the Premier League’s current leaders.

Whilst the international break has provided the coaching staff with more time to prepare for the match, it has also thrown up a potentially disruptive injury to one of Frank’s key players.

Pape Matar Sarr had to go off in the second half of Senegal’s clash with Brazil, ironically, at The Emirates with an injury, and it remains to be seen how serious a blow that is.

The latest Spurs injury news ahead of the North London derby

It is fair to say that the Lilywhites have had their fair share of injury issues in the 2025/26 campaign, as they currently have 11 players who are either out or about to return from injury, not including Sarr.

James Maddison is the one player who will certainly not be returning to action any time soon, as the England international suffered an ACL injury in pre-season that will keep him out until next year.

As you can see in the table above, Tottenham have a host of players who Transfermarkt suggests could return for the North London derby, but that is their prediction and has yet to be confirmed by Frank or the club.

It has been reported, for example, that Randal Kolo Muani could be out for up to eight weeks with his jaw injury, which means that it would be surprising to see him return next weekend.

Senegal boss Pape Thiaw claimed that the injury was not a “big deal”, suggesting that there will be no long-term lay-off, but Spurs must prepare for the possibility that they will not have Sarr available, or at least ready to start, against the Gunners.

The Senegal international has started six of his ten appearances in the Premier League so far this season, per Sofascore, and his absence would leave a hole to fill in the middle of the park.

Lucas Bergvall would have been in contention to take Sarr’s place in midfield after returning to the Sweden squad for the international break, but he was excused from international duty after suffering a setback in his return from a concussion.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

This suggests that the 19-year-old central midfielder will either be unavailable for selection or lacking in match fitness, having not played since the clash with Chelsea on the first day of the month.

With this in mind, Spurs could ease the blow dealt by this potential injury to Sarr by unleashing experienced campaigner Rodrigo Bentancur alongside Joao Palhinha against Arsenal.

Why Spurs must unleash Rodrigo Bentancur against Arsenal

Playing the Uruguay international alongside the summer signing from Bayern Munich may not be the most popular suggestion, as there have been complaints from some supporters that it is a bit of a negative pairing.

Bentancur ranks within the bottom 38% of midfielders in the top five leagues and European competitions for progressive passes per 90 (4.13) over the past 365 days, whilst Palhinha ranks in the bottom 7% with 2.92 progressive passes per 90, per FBref.

This suggests that the perception that this midfield pairing lacks progression in possession is a fair one, but it is defensive quality that Spurs will need against Arsenal, who are top of the Premier League and have scored 20 goals in 11 matches.

Therefore, playing the £75k-per-week star next to Palhinha could be the way to go next weekend, particularly if Sarr and Bergvall are not 100% ready to start after their respective issues.

The former Juventus midfielder, described as a “mentality monster” by one analyst, came off the bench against Manchester United last time out, but started eight of his first nine appearances in the Premier League this season, per Sofascore, which shows how much Frank has relied on him.

As you can see in the table above, Bentancur ranks very highly among his positional peers in a host of key defensive metrics in the top five leagues in Europe and European competitions over the past year.

These statistics illustrate the defensive quality that he can provide in front of the back four alongside Palhinha, which is further evidenced by the club’s return of seven clean sheets in the 16 games that they have been on the pitch at the same time this season, per FBref.

This suggests that Spurs may have their best chance of keeping Arsenal at bay by playing Bentancur and Palhinha at the base of the midfield to protect Cristian Romero and Micky van De Ven next weekend.

Whilst they may not provide the youthful energy that Bergvall and Sarr bring to the team, the experienced midfield pairing could be a solid option to go with if the aforementioned duo are not available or fit enough to start.
