£8m manager "wants the Tottenham job" with Postecoglou under threat

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou could be facing his final few games as Spurs boss, according to recent reports, with a former employee of Daniel Levy claiming one tactician will be very keen to replace the Australian.

Tottenham are just 90 minutes away from the Europa League final in Bilbao on May 21st, and if they avoid a humbling defeat away to Bodo/Glimt in their semi-final second leg, it’ll guarantee their much-needed spot after a dismal season domestically.

Spurs have equalled their record for most Premier League defeats in a single campaign under Postecoglou this season (19), and their form in England has prompted many calls for the Lilywhites boss to be sacked.

Postecoglou could even leave Tottenham regardless of their possible success in Europe, according to reliable media sources like The Telegraph recently, and there are a number of managers who are already being linked with the job this summer.

Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Thomas Frank (Brentford), Scott Parker (Burnley), Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid), Jürgen Klopp (Head of Global, Red Bull), Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen), Niko Kovač (Borussia Dortmund) and Edin Terzić (free agent) have all been mentioned as Tottenham managerial candidates to replace Postecoglou in the last few weeks, so there are no shortage of options which could be considered.

More recently, there are suggestions that Fulham boss Marco Silva is emerging as a serious frontrunner.

Fulham managerMarcoSilvabefore the match

Journalist Pete O’Rourke claimed earlier this week that the Portuguese, who has an £8 million release clause in his contract, has a serious admirer in Levy and Silva is becoming more open to replacing Postecoglou.

Marco Silva "wants the Tottenham job"

Now, Levy’s former employee and chief scout, Mick Brown, has told Football Insider that Silva “wants the Tottenham job”, but there is no guarantee this will land him the role, as there will be many contenders.

“Marco Silva wants the Tottenham job,” he said.

“No matter what we say, Tottenham is a very lucrative job, and it’s one any manager would be interested in. They’re a big club, regardless of how well they’re doing on the pitch.

Fulham managerMarcoSilva

“Silva has done a very good job with Fulham, when you look at the stature of the club and the finances he has available to him. But I get the feeling he has taken them as far as they can go by challenging for Europe.

“If they don’t get into Europe, and he’s offered the job, I have no doubt he’ll take it. It’s just about whether Spurs feel he is the right man for the job at the moment, because there are a lot of contenders and people they’ll be looking at.”

The 47-year-old has guided Fulham to an impressive campaign yet again, where they briefly contended for a spot in next season’s Champions League, which is very commendable work considering their shoe-string budget in comparison to England’s elite.

Better than Rogers: Liverpool could see £65m bid accepted for 18-goal star

Trent Alexander-Arnold might be jetting off to the Spanish capital this summer, but there’s plenty to be happy about for those of a Liverpool persuasion right now.

With the Reds winning their 20th top-flight title under Arne Slot’s management this year, Alexander-Arnold has very much played a pivotal part in putting his boyhood club back on its perch – not just this year, but across the illustrious sweep of his career.

But the vice-captain is going to leave for Real Madrid on a Bosman, and his departure will have a say on the roads taken across the transfer market months.

While sorting out Liverpool’s defensive flanks is sure to be a priority for FSG, there’s no question that changes are going to be enforced from an attacking standpoint.

Liverpool eyeing attacking changes

Liverpool are gearing up for a busy summer, and no mistake. FSG’s approach toward transfer business has stoked frustrations over the years, but can we really begrudge them, given the club’s success over the past decade?

Liverpool manager ArneSlotlooks on before the match

This new version, it must be said, feels different. The framework has been reshaped and Slot is expecting sweeping changes after minimal investment last summer.

Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota may both reportedly depart, opening ample room for a high-level centre-forward. However, with Luis Diaz anticipating new talks to renew his contract, Liverpool’s need for a left winger has been lessened considerably.

That hasn’t stopped the Merseysiders from registering their interest in Morgan Rogers, though, a versatile attacker who shifts seamlessly between the wide lane and a more central berth, and has struck 27 goal contributions from 51 outings this season.

However, Liverpool have yet to double down on a target, and might have found one who would be a better fit than the Aston Villa sensation.

Liverpool could see bid accepted for Premier League star

Sources have confirmed to Caught Offside that Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is on Liverpool’s radar this summer, with the Bees seeking bids of £60m-£65m in order to let him head to Anfield or any other interested party.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, sporting director Richard Hughes will need to accelerate his plans if Liverpool are to prevail, with Manchester United set to make their opening offer in the coming weeks.

While the urgency for a right-sided forward has been eased after Mohamed Salah’s contract renewal, Federico Chiesa has scarcely featured under Slot and is mooted for a return to Italy, with AC Milan reportedly interested.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

Mbeumo could be the perfect addition, adding the athleticism and dynamism needed ahead of a title-defending campaign.

What Bryan Mbeumo would bring to Liverpool

Salah’s peerless output in the Premier League this season is something Slot will be hoping to replicate next year. Signing a ball-carrying star such as Rogers could be a way to make that happen, but Liverpool already have a tried and tested midfield three and Diaz is rumoured to be staying put.

However, he’ll be 33 by the time the 2025/26 campaign arrives, and Mbeumo could be the perfect forward to ease the Egypt international’s workload.

Of course, Mbeumo’s capacity to perform at number nine is something Thomas Frank has made good use of throughout the season and Slot will be sure to take a leaf from the Dane’s book, with his usage of Diaz’s dynamic qualities this year already underlining how he can guide the Brentford man toward new heights.

Brentford's BryanMbeumocelebrates after the match

The 25-year-old has scored 68 goals and provided 50 assists across 239 matches in England, but it would be hard to argue against the current campaign being his finest for the Bees.

After missing only eight big chances in the Premier League this season (scoring 18 times), he’s proven his clinical edge to be the hallmark of a broad-ranging skill set. Of course, that’s not all, with 16 big chances created and 1.3 tackles and dribbles averaged per game, over four duels won each fixture too.

While Villa’s Rogers would be an attractive option given his prolificness in Unai Emery’s system, Mbeumo is the more dangerous goalscorer while proving himself a multi-dimensional player too, creating heartily.

Highly-regarded, Rogers has pulled all the stops this term and would no doubt prove a worthy addition to Liverpool’s high-flying team.

That said, recent rumours have suggested that Rogers will cost suitors around £70m, which is no small sum. Villa’s reluctance to sell could see that stretch even higher.

Meanwhile, Brentford seem open to selling their talisman which could play into Liverpool’s plans, with Mbeumo’s specific quality suggesting that he could one day succeed Salah while serving as his understudy for now and filling in at centre-forward too.

He’s been more prolific than Rogers in the Premier League this season while outstripping him across most underlying metrics. Rogers has won more duels per game, but only by a 0.2 average.

Hailed for his “sensational” efforts in west London by Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, Liverpool will kick themselves if they fail to beat off competition from their Red Devil rivals and secure Mbeumo’s signature.

Liverpool are going to want an out-and-out striker to join their ranks ahead of Slot’s second season, but if Nunez and Jota both depart, Mbeumo’s addition would make a significant difference to an outfit looking to challenge across four fronts.

Both the Cameroon international and Rogers have the qualities to leave marked effects on Slot’s Liverpool project, but Mbuemo’s goalscoring ability and completeness have the decisive say on the matter: FSG need to bring him in.

Marcus Stoinis does the unthinkable and breaches fortress Chepauk

Stoinis shines bright in Chennai and few were surprised, as he showed off his Melbourne Stars form at No.3 for LSG with a stunning unbeaten century in a winning chase

Deivarayan Muthu23-Apr-20242:43

Why No. 3 is the best position for Stoinis at LSG

The cracking sound of bat hitting the ball reverberated around Chepauk. You might have even heard it at the Marina Beach or Anna Salai. Because a capacity crowd in Chennai was stunned into silence.A slider from Moeen Ali was pumped into the quiet stands beyond the long-on boundary. Nicholas Pooran, who is an elite six-hitter himself, was amused by that power. There was an eerie silence all around Chepauk once again when the new crowd-favourite Matheesha Pathirana was flat-batted between extra-cover and mid-off.Marcus Stoinis did the unthinkable and breached fortress Chepauk.ESPNcricinfo LtdOf all the grounds in the IPL, Chepauk arguably has the noisiest crowd. Just ask Andre Russell, who had shut his ears when MS Dhoni walked out to the tune of from the Rajinikanth movie earlier this month. The Chennai crowd was at its loudest once again on Tuesday evening when their was welcomed with another popular song: (You are a lion) from the Silambarasan starrer . They went wild when Dhoni launched a mini-helicopter to finish Chennai Super Kings’ innings with a last ball-four off Stoinis.A couple of hours later, however, Stoinis flipped the script and finished off a steep chase for Lucknow Super Giants, with Dhoni watching the ball disappear over short fine leg from behind the stumps.Related

Stoinis makes highest score in an IPL chase as LSG score record win in Chennai

Marcus Stoinis silences Chepauk with hundred in record chase

The result didn’t look as likely when Deepak Chahar had knocked Quinton de Kock over for a duck in LSG’s pursuit of 211 on a two-paced Chepauk track. Even the new ball was coming slow off the pitch, which messed with de Kock’s timing and had him chopping on.Before Tuesday’s game, LSG had the worst average (9.33) and strike rate (101.81) for No.3 batters in the IPL. So, the team management shook things up by bumping Stoinis up to No.3. With de Kock falling off the third ball of the chase, Stoinis was virtually opening the batting. This was the first time that Stoinis was batting at No.3 or above for LSG in 34 innings in the IPL. He responded with an unbeaten 124 off 63 balls, the highest score in an IPL chase.ESPNcricinfo LtdStoinis, however, is no stranger to batting up the order. He has opened the batting for Melbourne Stars in 56 innings in the Big Bash League (BBL) and is among the most-prolific top-three batters in that league since he slotted into that role for Stars from 2015-16.Stoinis has even opened the batting for Delhi Capitals in an IPL knockout game, in Abu Dhabi in 2020. DC had dropped Prithvi Shaw for that match and in his place at the top, Stoinis scored 38 off 27 balls to help set up DC’s win. After LSG beat CSK on Tuesday, their captain KL Rahul made sense of Stoinis’ promotion. “We wanted to be a lot more braver as a team,” Rahul said. “We had three games – a couple at home and one away from home – where we couldn’t get past 170 and we felt we needed to capitalise the powerplay. And we need one power-hitter in the top three. [If] the top three goes really hard and then you have Pooran at the back end and you have a couple of Indian players who can play around them and do the job of playing spin really well.”When Stoinis opens the batting for the Stars, he usually prefers to take some time to suss out the conditions before kicking into higher gears. He followed a similar template against CSK: he was on 16 off 11 balls at one point, but in the final over of the powerplay, he took Shardul Thakur for back-to-back fours. Stoinis then zoomed to a 26-ball half-century and converted it into a 56-ball hundred.CSK head coach Stephen Fleming wasn’t surprised one bit, having coached him at Stars in the BBL.”Yeah, he’s got power but he’s also got really good batsmanship,” Fleming said. “In the Stars, we got him up to open the batting and he was quite prolific. So, I’ve seen it and I’ve seen the way he can control an innings and today he quietly went about his work. Today his fifty came off mid-20 balls and then he just controlled the innings and what more can you ask from your top three?”They [LSG] needed someone to answer what Ruturaj [Gaikwad] did [108 off 60 balls]. And Stoinis did that beautifully. Not a surprise; we knew he’s a dangerous player and we knew we needed to get him out with Pooran and the other two [Rahul and de Kock] at the top. We got close but we couldn’t get the last one out.”

Once the dew set in later in the evening, the conditions became better for batting than what it was when CSK batted first. But there were also pockets in the chase where Stoinis had to sit back and leave the boundary-hitting to his partners. Stoinis, who had faced Pathirana just once before Tuesday, initially struggled to pick his action and release point, which is lower than Lasith Malinga’s. While Stoinis managed 15 off 12 balls against Pathirana, Deepak Hooda clattered him for 11 off five balls.”It’s not just go, go, and go,” Stoinis said after winning the Player-of-the-Match award. “I guess it was ebb and flow the whole innings. There were some bowlers we wanted to target and some we played cautionary against. You always want to keep the balls and run rate in control, I guess. So, it was a really important innings that Nicky P played and [Deepak] Hooda’s innings because for a while I felt like I couldn’t hit a boundary.”It eventually came down to LSG needing 17 off the last over from Mustafizur Rahman. The Bangladesh seamer ditched his whippy cutter for the yorker and repeatedly missed his lengths. Dew or no dew – there is margin for error in the IPL, especially against a big hitter like Stoinis. He went 6,4,4 (nb),4 to cap a remarkable victory for LSG, with three balls to spare. With Devdutt Padikkal still struggling for runs – he scored only 13 off 19 balls against CSK – there is a strong case for Stoinis to continue at No.3 for LSG. After all, he has shone at the top for the Stars and has now beaten CSK – and their yellow army – in Chennai.

Nerveless Arshdeep Singh aces the endgame to repay Kings' faith

He might not have the express pace to boast, but his discipline and effort, especially in crunch overs, haven’t gone unnoticed

Sruthi Ravindranath26-Apr-20223:09

How good is Arshdeep Singh?

Punjab Kings weren’t exactly in a comfortable position when Arshdeep Singh came in to bowl the 17th over against Super Kings on Monday, defending a total of 187 for 4. Kings were coming off a big defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals – and in this match, Super Kings were threatening to take the game away. Despite early strikes, Ambati Rayudu had got the team back in the game and had just plundered 23 runs off Sandeep Sharma in the 16th over. With the equation down to Super Kings needing 47 off 24 balls, all Arshdeep had to do was hold his nerve and bowl with control – like he had done consistently at crucial moments in the death overs for the last few seasons. The left-arm pacer did exactly that, with 1, 1, 1, 0, 1, 2. The pressure was right back on Super Kings.Related

Arshdeep, Rabada, Dhawan help Kings down Super Kings

The job was not over yet. After Kagiso Rabada’s six-run over, Arshdeep was back to bowl the 19th over with Super Kings needing 35 off 12 balls. On the other side was MS Dhoni – fresh off his heroics in the previous match against Mumbai Indians – and Ravindra Jadeja. Up against two experienced batters who are known for their finishing skills, Arshdeep also had to be wary of the fact that Dhoni had the Wankhede’s shorter boundary to target on the leg side.It could be nerve-wracking for anyone, but not for Arshdeep, who did his job without fuss. He was able to nail a couple of wide yorkers, and the one he missed by a fraction was dispatched for four. There was no panic in the Kings’ dugout because his magnificent spell at the death – 14 runs from 12 balls – had just left Super Kings needing a steep 27 off the final over. Even for Dhoni, that was a tough task. Rishi Dhawan, who was handed the final over, conceded 15 runs and dismissed Dhoni to take Kings home by 11 runs.Player of the Match Shikhar Dhawan (88 off 59 balls), Kagiso Rabada and Rishi – who was quite impressive in his first IPL match in five years – had all played important roles in helping Kings secure their fourth win of the season, but there was no doubt in captain Mayank Agarwal’s mind who had turned the match around.”I thought Arsh bowled exceedingly well,” Agarwal told the host broadcaster after the win. “I must credit him. Throughout the season, he’s stood up in tough moments and he’s bowled the tough overs. He’s always put his hand up and said, ‘Give me the ball’. So he’s been great for us.”Arshdeep Singh bowled a nerveless 19th over•BCCIEven though Arshdeep might not be among the wickets, time and again he has proved that he can be relied on at the death. In their first match of the season, Arshdeep bowled a frugal 18th over to keep Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli quiet when Royal Challengers Bangalore were going at nearly ten runs per over. When Mumbai Indians needed 33 off 18 balls, he landed the yorkers right and gave away just five runs and played a key part in the victory. In their loss against Gujarat Titans too, he bowled a solid 18th over, mixing his lengths well to keep Hardik Pandya under the pump.”I think Arsh has been the best death bowler in this competition,” Kagiso Rabada told the host broadcaster. “That’s what the stats say. He’s a youngster coming in. He’s got a lot of drive, a lot of ambition and he’s got talent as well. He’s just a good bloke. So it’s nice to have him around. I’ve always bowled at the death as well, so I know I’m going to bowl at the death but Arsh has just been magnificent and been leading the way in that discipline.”The numbers do say that. Arshdeep has conceded just 5.66 runs an over at the death, which is the best economy rate for a bowler who has bowled a minimum of 30 balls at the death in IPL 2022. Since IPL 2020, he has an economy rate of 8.63 in death overs, only behind Anrich Nortje and Jasprit Bumrah in the list.He has even made it to the top ten of bowlers with most yorkers bowled in the last few years, nailing 32 in 14 games since 2020 and conceding 3.75 an over while bowling this length.Though he might not have a lot of wickets to his name or the express pace some others have, Arshdeep’s discipline, especially in crunch overs, hasn’t gone unnoticed. After all, Arshdeep was one of the three players retained by Kings ahead of the IPL 2022 and he has repaid the team’s faith. His team-mates are acknowledging his efforts, while cricket pundits are discussing whether he’s done enough to earn an India cap. For now, Arshdeep is the man who bowls the tough overs, and bowls them with an uncluttered mind.

Cubs Make Shocking Decision on Ace Shota Imanaga’s Contract

In shocking Cubs news, starting pitcher Shota Imanaga is now a free agent, ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported on Tuesday.

Chicago chose not to pick up the three-year option on his contract, and then Imanaga declined his $15 million player option. It was originally expected that Imanaga would remain in Chicago.

The Cubs could still retain the veteran lefty if they extend him a qualifying offer, which would cost $22.025 million for the 2026 season. Imanaga would then have the option to accept or decline that offer. If he turned it down, he would officially become a free agent, and the Cubs would receive draft pick compensation when he signed with a new team.

Imanaga just finished up his second season with the Cubs after his All-Star campaign in 2024. In 25 regular season starts, the Japanese star posted a 3.73 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP over 144.2 innings pitched. He threw 117 strikeouts, while giving up 117 hits and 62 runs.

The ace made his postseason debut this year during the Cubs’ division series run. Imanaga started one game and appeared in another, posting an 8.10 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. He had six strikeouts and gave up eight hits and six runs.

The Cubs will now look to fill Imanaga’s spot in the starting rotation for the 2026 season. And, quite a few teams looking for a pretty strong starter will show interest in Imanaga in return.

CSK set to release Conway and Ravindra

The five-time IPL champions have decided to invest in youngsters like Mhatre, Urvil and Brevis

Chatter: Will CSK release Conway and Ravindra?

Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are set to release their pair of left-hand New Zealand batters Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra ahead of the auction for IPL 2026. While Conway was picked for INR 6.25 crore at the auction last year, CSK got Ravindra back via the right-to-match card option for INR 4 crore. Both players were expected to play a critical role in CSK’s top order but both struggled through IPL 2025, where CSK finished last with just four wins.Ravindra made 191 runs at a strike rate of 128.18 and Conway scored 156 runs at a strike rate of 131.09. It is understood that the CSK think tank opted to release both batters considering they have decided to invest in the development of the young batters that were added to the squad late last season. That includes South Africa batter Dewald Brevis as well as the uncapped Indian pair of Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel, who are likely to be part of the XI for IPL 2026.Both Conway and Ravindra have only played for CSK in the IPL. Conway was part of the team since 2022, and scored 672 runs at a strike rate close to 140 in IPL 2023, which CSK won. Ravindra came on board in 2024, a season in which he struck at 160.86, which was much superior than his T20 career strike rate of 139.78.CSK have now let go of three overseas players from their squad of 2025 – apart from the New Zealand duo, Sam Curran has been traded out, along with Ravindra Jadeja, to Rajasthan Royals.

Zadran, Nabi, Sami and Rashid star as Afghanistan sweep Bangladesh 3-0

Seamer Sami got his maiden five-wicket haul after Zadran’s patient 95 and Nabi’s blazing 62* took Afghanistan to 293

Afghanistan completed their decimation of Bangladesh, wrapping up a 3-0 ODI series win with a 200-run win in the third game in Abu Dhabi. After managing to put up 293 for 9, they shot out Bangladesh for just 93. Afghanistan’s ODI series win comes by the same margin as Bangladesh’s in the T20Is.After Ibrahim Zadran and Mohammad Nabi bookended Afghanistan’s batting effort with excellent half-centuries, seamer Bilal Sami took his maiden five-wicket haul. But much of the rout came about once again due to Rashid Khan, who took three wickets in his first three overs.Bangladesh’s batters capitulated ad nauseum. They hardly any impact on the contest throughout the series, thus continuing the trend in the third game. The procession started with Mohammad Naim struggled for 23 balls before Azmatullah Omarzai had him caught at slip for 7.Leading up to his dismissal, it was only one-way traffic of runs from the other end. Bangladesh looked like they could get out of some early trouble leaning on Saif Hassan. He didn’t disappoint, scoring heavily in the powerplay with a couple of sixes and a four. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto continued his poor form in ODIs when Sami had him bowled off an inside edge. Saif tried to get Bangladesh out of trouble, but hardly had the strike. Then, as it has often happened, it was the Rashid show. Towhid Hridoy fell on his first ball, unable to read the rapid googly. In the next over, it was Saif who missed the googly by a whisker, the ball sneaking through his bat and pad. He finished as the top-scorer with 43 off 54 balls with two fours and three sixes.Ibrahim Zadran fell for 95•Afghanistan Cricket Board

Sami then took his first wicket by getting Mehidy Hasan Miraz caught behind for 6, before Shamim Hossain got run-out next ball. Nurul Hasan had played the Sami delivery towards point, where Nangeyalia Kharote caught Shamim fidgeting out of his crease.Rashid took his third wicket in as many overs when he had Nurul lbw in the 21st over. Bangladesh’s procession continued when Sami added his third by having Tanvir Islam caught-and-bowled in his next over. Rishad became Sami’s fourth victim when he top-edged him to mid-on. Sami took his fifth when Hasan Mahmud holed out in the 28th over.Afghanistan had earlier set themselves up nicely for a big total. Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz sped away to add 99 runs for the first wicket. Gurbaz was, as usual, the enforcer, striking five fours and a scrumptious six in his knock of 42. Zadran wasn’t going to hang back, though, after his sedate 95 in the previous game. He reached his fifty shortly after Gurbaz got out, before adding another 74 runs for the second wicket with Sediqullah Atal. The pair gave Afghanistan the perfect launching pad at 173 for 1 in the 32nd over, but Saif upended their plans at that stage. The part-time offspinner took three wickets in four overs, as Afghanistan lost four wickets for 15 runs in the space of 25 balls.Omarzai struck three fours to keep them afloat, but Afghanistan kept slipping, until they reached 249 for 9 in 48 overs. Nabi was batting at 24 off 25 balls at that stage, but no sooner had Nahid Rana left the ground suddenly after bowling two legal balls in the 49th over that Nabi sprung into action. He struck Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who stepped up to complete Rana’s over, for three sixes in four balls, before pasting Mahmud for a six and three fours in a 19-run last over. Afghanistan picked up 44 runs in the last two overs to upend Bangladesh’s recovery with the ball.

Crystal Palace target Tyler Morton amid key update on Adam Wharton's future

Crystal Palace are now eyeing Lyon starlet Tyler Morton as a possible replacement for Adam Wharton, amid a new update on the midfielder’s future at Selhurst Park.

Wharton’s future at Selhurst Park remains up in the air, with a number of Premier League clubs emerging as potential suitors for the midfielder, including Chelsea, and it has now been revealed the Blues are “actively in talks” over a deal.

The 21-year-old was recently called up to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel, having remained a key player for Oliver Glasner’s side this season, with perhaps his most impressive performance coming in the 2-1 win against Liverpool, creating two big chances and making four key passes.

Unfortunately, the Eagles have become accustomed to losing some of their best players in recent years, with Michael Olise moving to Bayern Munich and Eberechi Eze joining Arsenal, and the former Blackburn Rovers man will also continue to attract attention from top clubs if he continues his current performance levels.

Consequently, Glasner & co may have to start thinking about bringing in a replacement, and a report has now given an update on their chances of signing a former Liverpool player…

Crystal Palace eyeing Tyler Morton

According to a report from Jeunes Footeux (via Sport Witness), Crystal Palace are now eyeing a move for Lyon midfielder Morton, a matter of months after he left Arne Slot’s side to sign for the Ligue 1 club.

The French side are currently experiencing financial difficulties, which means they may be tempted to cash-in, should Palace be willing to come to the negotiating table with a ‘substantial offer’.

The Eagles are currently monitoring the 23-year-old closely, as they are preparing for Wharton’s departure in 2026, amid interest from a number of unnamed clubs.

The Wallasey-born midfielder, who is represented by the same agent as Borna Sosa, found it difficult to establish himself as a first-team regular at Liverpool, but he has been a key player for Lyon this season, most recently picking up an assist in a 3-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

Scout Ben Mattinson has also provided a positive review of the Englishman’s key attributes, saying: “Morton is a complete midfielder with an all-round ability to dictate tempo with his passing, carry forward and win the ball. Particularly his long passing stands out.”

Game time may have been hard to come by at his former club, but the Liverpool academy graduate did manage to impress when given the opportunity, having been singled out for praise for his performance against West Ham United last season.

Morton is at the right age to be a solid long-term replacement for Wharton, but Crystal Palace’s main priority should be to keep hold of their current central midfielder.
