In green Arundel, Zimbabwe quietly help neighbours SA tune up for their biggest Test

There’s little to be gained for Zimbabwe, but they still agreed to play what felt like a club game from the days before sportainment

Firdose Moonda04-Jun-2025There’s a distinctly Liverpudlian flavour among South Africa’s leadership group. So it’s hardly surprising they’re getting by with a little help from their friends as they prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final next week.Head Coach Shukri Conrad, batting coach Ashwell Prince, and captain Temba Bavuma all support the Reds – and are fresh off celebrating their league title win – and the first people they asked to lend them their ears were Zimbabwe, the guys next door.South Africa have not played them since October 2022, and haven’t hosted them since October 2018 or visited them since August-September 2014. But they convinced Zimbabwe to extend their stay in England to play them in a four-day warm-up game in Arundel. There are worse places to be in than the picturesque town in the South Downs – though both South Africa and Zimbabwe are actually based a 40-minute drive away in Portsmouth – and there’s little to be gained for Zimbabwe, apart from some insight into a team they will host later this month. But they’ve still agreed to play.Related

So understanding have the not-so-noisy-neighbours been that they happily agreed to let South Africa bat first to give their line-up time in the middle, and then promptly even dropped Ryan Rickelton at second slip in the opening exchanges. Rickelton went on to top score with 62. But Zimbabwe weren’t quite as accommodating to Aiden Markram, who flicked 21-year old Alex Falao aerially to Wessly Madhevere at square leg, and departed for 13 off 15 balls. That meant Conrad was forced to show his tactical hand early when it comes to the least certain spot in the side: No. 3. Conrad had initially handed it to Tristan Stubbs in August last year, then let Wiaan Mulder bat there with a broken finger against Sri Lanka in Durban – seemingly because that was his only way of contributing in that match – and has also used Rickelton there briefly. Now that Rickelton has secured the opening berth, one of Stubbs, Mulder or Tony de Zorzi could bat at No. 3 at Lord’s. At Arundel, Mulder was given the spot, which is either an indication of how South Africa will line-up at the final or a bluff. On the evidence of the 49 balls he faced, Mulder appeared a serious candidate, and batted with a good measure of circumspection, especially as Rickelton was in full flow at the other end. Though Mulder looked aggrieved when given out lbw to a Tanaka Chivanga delivery that kept low, he made 26 runs, and was generally solid in defence.Stubbs was in at No. 5, which is a position that seems to suit him. He bedded in, and took 120 balls to score 58, but never appeared to be under pressure. Stubbs may be considered in that spot ahead of de Zorzi, the other batting option in the top five. De Zorzi was initially confused by spin and retired on 28, which indicates his status as a reserve player for the WTC final.Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder during the warm-up•ICC via Getty ImagesSouth Africa would have been most satisfied with the performances of Rickelton, in form across formats and playing attackingly, and Bavuma. This was Bavuma’s first competitive fixture in three months since the Champions Trophy, and he was in good touch. Importantly, Bavuma was able to play the pull and the hook comfortably. Those are shots which require him to extend his elbow fully, and hence he allayed fears that the chronic injury he carries is holding him back.As for Zimbabwe, for much of the day, it looked like they were doing their bit for continental unity, and it has been made easy for them. Their bills have been paid mostly by their hosts (the ECB provided a touring fee for Trent Bridge, and the ICC are paying for this add-on against South Africa). Their coaching staff – Justin Sammons, Charl Langeveldt and Rivash Gobind – are South African, so it has also been explained as something of a patriotic act.”A lot of their support staff have been part of the Proteas set up before, so we’ve got a really good relationship in terms of that,” Conrad told the media after the first day’s play was washed out.Overall, they gave South Africa as decent a challenge as they could on a flat track. Chivanga led the attack with a healthy dose of aggression and returned for spells late in the day, Victor Nyauchi got a hint of bounce, and the spin combination of Wellington Masakadza and Vincent Masekesa asked some questions of technique. More’s the pity that Blessing Muzarabani, their most reputed quick, was unavailable for this match after jetting off to the IPL, where he did not get a game. With heavy rain forecast for all of Thursday and most of Friday, South Africa had to manufacture some time in the field, and declared after 79 overs, with an hour’s play remaining. Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen opened the bowling, and combined to take the first wicket – Brian Bennet caught by Jansen at gully off Rabada – before Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj took over. Does that mean Ngidi is being thought of ahead of Dane Paterson at Lord’s? It may be too early to tell, given South Africa only bowled 11 overs.

“It would be foolish of me not to tap into whatever IP there is, and he’s current. He was successful against Australia, and knows how to bowl at Lord’s, and the nuances that come with bowling from the respective ends”SA coach Shukri Conrad on getting Stuart Broad on board

The only thing South Africa may not get is a full 90-over day in the field and additional time in the bowler’s legs. But they’ve made another plan for some extra help in that department too. They’ve recruited a former Notts team-mate of Prince’s, who is also an SA20 commentator, in Stuart Broad. He will attend part of their training session on Monday in London, and have dinner with the coaching staff in an evening designed for information exchange. The arrangement is unpaid.”I reached out to Stuart via Ash, because they obviously know each other. And I just said to him, ‘Is there any way we can just get together, spend some time – primarily with the coaches – and then share whatever you’ve got?’,” Conrad said. “He’s coming for dinner with the coaches, and then he’s probably spending an hour or so at our nets.Temba Bavuma was back in action after an elbow injury•ICC via Getty Images”It would be foolish of me not to tap into whatever IP there is, and he’s current. He was successful against Australia, and knows how to bowl at Lord’s, and the nuances that come with bowling from the respective ends.”Conrad also wants to be careful not to overload his team with “too much information”, and remind them that, at its core, cricket is about simplicity. There was nowhere better to do that than Arundel. The Castle Cricket Ground is nestled among greenery, has no big stands, and the only food stall is the quaint Tea Hut. The match was open to members only, and there were just a few hundred people in attendance who could hear every word, ooh and aah being said on the field. It was very much like watching a club match from the days before sportainment, and was as low-key as it can get the week before the highest-profile engagement of this South African Test team’s careers. Zimbabwe will be back home by then, knowing they were the friends who provided a little – or, depending on how things go, perhaps a lot – of help when their neighbours needed them most.

Right-hand batting heavy India strong favourites yet again

With the momentum of Asia Cup title and series win against Australia, India would want to go all the way at home

Sidharth Monga29-Sep-2023World Cup pedigree: India are the second-best World Cup team after Australia. Apart from winning it in 1983 and 2011, they have been losing finalists in 2003 and losing semi-finalists in 1987, 1996, 2015 and 2019. Ever since their early departure from the 2007 edition, India have entered every World Cup as one of the favourites, if not strong contenders.Recent form: In mid-to-long term, India’s build-up to the World Cup was full of anxiety. Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna, five key players that India had invested in, were on the shelf. As the tournament approached, though, Bumrah, Rahul and Iyer made not just complete recoveries but also immediate returns to form. Kuldeep Yadav’s reinvigorated left-arm wristspin remains a point of difference.Consequently, India enter the tournament with the momentum of having won the Asia Cup and the bilateral series against Australia. They are now strong favourites especially with other teams now beginning to encounter poor luck with injuries. There remain two drawbacks: their batting is right-hand heavy and their tail is long, which necessitates playing a lesser bowler at No. 8 for the freedom that provides the top seven.Related

  • Kuldeep 2.0 is India's ace in the hole

Selection: Once the players were fit and available, 12 of them chose themselves. For the back-up fast bowler, India went for the experienced Mohammed Shami ahead of Prasidh because in the current combination they need a bowler who will also make use of the new ball. Prasidh’s speciality remains providing the point of difference in the middle overs. The selectors and the team management have opted for the extra batter in Suryakumar Yadav purely on promise even though his List A record is not as good as his T20 exploits. The final slot of the spinner who could bat originally went to Axar Patel because he also provided a left-hand batter who could be promoted up the order to counter match-ups, but a late injury opened the door for the return of R Ashwin, who, apart from Virat Kohli, is the only former World Cup winner in the squad.2:20

Chawla: ‘Street-smart’ Ashwin could get into India’s XI straightaway

Squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-capt), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Kishan (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Mohammed Shami, R AshwinKey player: Of all the injured players, India were most desperate to get Bumrah back on the park. When they lost him on the eve of the T20 World Cup last year, they received confirmation that Bumrah is not replaceable. Capable of taking wickets in every phase of the game, he is also India’s big hope at the death, which can be their weakness at times. Hearteningly for them, Bumrah showed no ring rust on return, and even seemed to have added a late and more consistent outswinger to his armoury.Rising star: A bit of a misnomer because Shubman Gill has already risen. ODIs happen to be his best format: he has already scored six centuries in 35 innings, including a double. Five of the centuries have come this year. He opens the innings and can bat through, which gives him the best chance to score runs by the bucketful. He is many people’s bet to be the top scorer in this World Cup.World Cup farewells? Ashwin has somehow found his way back into two World Cups in the last two years, but he will definitely not be playing the one in 2027. That out of the way, it is doubtful if their two biggest batters of this era, Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be around in four years’ time. Shami will be past 37 when the next World Cup rolls in, and it is getting increasingly difficult for Ravindra Jadeja to stay fit for all formats. Rahul has had his share of struggle with injuries, but he will be only 35 at the time of the next World Cup.

Oval Invincibles make light of setbacks to deliver serious performance

Statement win made possible by batting depth, smart captaincy and international-standard attack

Matt Roller22-Jul-2021Their two pinch-hitters made 8 off 8 between them, England’s in-form fast bowler was limited to five balls with a side injury, and their two world-class wristspinners were missing due to a visa hitch and international duty. And yet the Oval Invincibles swept aside the Manchester Originals in the opening men’s match of the Hundred, defending their near-par total of 145 with relative ease despite their options being severely limited by circumstance. They were among the favourites for this competition but this was a statement win made possible by batting depth, smart captaincy and an international-standard bowling attack. The win was set up by Sam Billings, the Invincibles’ captain and one of England’s most-travelled franchise cricketers who has been an advocate of a city-based tournament to raise the standard of domestic cricket. His innings of 49 off 30 balls – having come in at 32 for 3 – was a perfectly-paced rebuilding job, hitting the gaps against spin on a used, slowish pitch while cutting and pulling well against seam.Perhaps the more impressive element of Billings’ performance was his captaincy, not least after Saqib Mahmood hurt his side while diving at fine leg to stop the 32nd ball of the innings, rendering him unable to bowl again. Billings was one of the England players to test positive for Covid-19 after the third ODI against Sri Lanka and used his self-isolation to devise strategies and plans alongside head coach Tom Moody.Billings was alert to the intricacies of the new rules and largely opted to shuffle his pack: Sam Curran bowled the first 10 balls of the innings, but Reece Topley was the only other bowler to stay on after an initial set of five. His hand was forced by Mahmood’s injury, but he was also proactive in making changes: when Sunil Narine, the best bowler on the night, removed Jos Buttler to bring a second left-hander to the crease, he immediately turned to his part-time offspinner Will Jacks to squeeze in another set of five. “Love this match-up!” Billings shouted from behind the stumps when Carlos Brathwaite came in, facing Nathan Sowter’s legspin, and he managed only seven runs off the six balls he faced from him.Related

Narine’s success was a vindication of the Invincibles’ decision to pick him as their first draft pick back in October 2019. Narine is one of only three of the first-round picks from that draft still involved at the team that signed them, and bowled with the control and genuine mystery that has made him such an asset across his T20 career.Billings opted against using him in a 10-ball block, instead opting to bring him on against set batters and making them force the pace against him. He had Buttler caught at extra cover when cramping him for room with a sharp offbreak as he backed away to open up the off side, and conceded only 22 runs from his 20 balls. “He’s a phenomenal man,” Billings said. “You don’t want to use all his overs up because a batsman coming in and facing that? It’s as difficult as anything.”But it was in keeping with the evening as a whole that it was the Surrey core in the attack that held the win together. After evidence of the fabled new audience during Wednesday’s women’s fixture, the 18,000-strong crowd in Kennington felt much the same as a usual Blast crowd here, with long queues for the bar and chants of “Don’t Take Me Home” for much of the run chase. And as with many of Surrey’s home Blast games over the last five years, it was the Curran brothers who held the key in the chase. Sam will be a big miss when he joins up with England after Sunday’s London derby and bowled cannily with the new ball and at the death. Hair bleached peroxide-blond, it was no surprise that he was keen to show off his box of tricks, delivering a 56mph slower ball with the final ball of his initial 10, and his dismissal of the set Brathwaite with the 96th ball sealed the win.Tom, meanwhile, had chipped in with a vital 29 off 18 balls at the death from No. 8, adapting to the slowness of the pitch, before filling a Dwayne Bravo-style role with the ball. He was the seventh bowler used and bowled the 10th, 13th, 17th and 19th sets of five: once he has found his groove in this tournament, there may be room for further back-loading, with the playing conditions leaving open the possibility of death specialists’ bowling 20 of the last 25 balls. All told, this was the second night in a row which showed that for all the light-hearted pre-tournament build-up, the Hundred will be taken deadly seriously by those involved. This was a performance straight of the Moody playbook: scrapping up to par then defending it with some breathing space thanks to the strength of his bowling attack, the gameplan that worked so well during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s glory days. The Invincibles’ flexible batting order and recruitment of a bowling attack which saw 80 of their 100 balls bowled by internationals had all the hallmarks of a successful short-form team: it will be a tough ask to live up to their name, but this win showed why they will be among the contenders.

Arteta’s £30m Arsenal man is now the biggest scapegoat since Xhaka

Arsenal have been riding the crest of a wave under Mikel Arteta’s tutelage, but this is the season that needs to see silverware returned to the Emirates Stadium.

Not since 2020, when Arteta took the loose reins after Unai Emery’s dismissal, have the Gunners lifted a trophy, and for all the incredible improvements that have been made since this new era began, the cabinet could do with a fresh adornment – perhaps the Premier League title?

Sporting director Andrea Berta has dovetailed into Arteta’s project this year and strengthened the Gunners with some talented additions. However, a few stragglers have emerged in north London, and they may need to be shipped on next year to continue the development of this elite outfit.

The Arsenal players Arteta needs to move on

Arsenal’s diligence is reflected by their contractual situations: no first-team player will find their deal is up at the end of the season. However, there are several who need to be shipped on regardless in 2026.

Gabriel Jesus, for example, impressed on his return from injury in midweek, coming off the bench against Club Brugge. Into the penultimate year of his contract, the 28-year-old has recently attracted interest from AC Milan.

Though Arsenal have undergone an incredible defensive transformation in recent years, the frontline still leaves something to be desired. Viktor Gyokeres, who arrived last summer for £64m, was picked as the solution, but he’s yet to bring it all together.

Arteta, for what it’s worth, remains steadfast in his belief that Gyokeres, a signing fuelled by Berta’s vision, will hit his prolific stride in the Premier League, but as the Gunners continue to go from strength to strength and challenge for the biggest prizes.

However, there’s another prominent face in the squad who may be enduring more vocal criticism for his performances, and it’s a situation that offers shades of former midfielder Granit Xhaka’s departure from the Emirates.

Arsenal's new Granit Xhaka

Xhaka has been a revelation in Sunderland’s midfield this season. When Arsenal sold the Swiss international to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023, few expected to see his face in the Premier League again, but he has been described as a “genius” buy for the Black Cats by Sky Sports’ Don Goodman.

The 33-year-old left Arsenal on a high, but his time in north London wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, having been stripped of the captaincy by Emery in 2019.

His perceived lack of discipline often led to him being scapegoated, and in a different scenario with a few similarities, the same could now be said of Martin Odegaard, who is Arteta’s proud £30m skipper but has come under fire for his performances.

Odegaard has been unlucky in recent years, missing chunks of the past few seasons, and some suggest he could be more positive on the ball, though statistics do rank favourably for the 26-year-old in that regard.

As per FBref, the Norwegian “wizard”, as dubbed by footballer Babayele Sodade, ranks among the top 5% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goal involvements, the top 3% for progressive passes, the top 2% for progressive carries, the top 2% for shot-creating actions and the top 1% for through balls per 90.

However, he’s not exempt from criticism. Former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere said “it will be tough to choose between” Odegaard and Eberechi Eze going forward, with the skipper not guaranteed a spot just because he wears the armband.

Bryce Harper Smacks Third Homer in Four Games on No-Doubter That Landed in Upper Deck

Bryce Harper is on a heater. The Philadelphia Phillies' star slugger hit his third home run in four games Friday when he clobbered a ball to the second deck at Citizens Bank Park against Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara.

On an 0-2 count in the bottom of the first inning, Harper turned on a cutter he received up-and-in for a no-doubt homer. The ball sailed 418 feet for a two-run shot, also scoring Phillies shortstop Trea Turner.

Harper was able to watch the ball leave the park as he knew it was gone immediately after making contact. The 89-mph cutter had an 106-mph exit velocity off the two-time National League MVP's bat.

And he did it while rocking an awesome gingerbread shinguard:

The hot stretch started on Tuesday as Harper hit a two-run home run against the San Francisco Giants in a 6-4 win for the Phillies. He followed it up with another two-run shot the next day. Harper has four homers thus far through his 2025 campaign, with three coming in the last four days.

Earlier this week, Turner helped Harper reveal the gender of his fourth baby with wife Kayla. Turner handed Harper a custom bat that lined up with the new baby's gender. Harper then took a bright blue twig to the plate, letting everyone know him and Kayla are expecting a boy.

The eight-time All-Star is slashing .261/.400/.464 through 19 games to start the year as the Phillies sit in second place in the NL East with an 11-8 record.

Chelsea's Yamal rival can surpass Palmer & Caicedo to become the world's best

There are plenty of reasons for Chelsea fans to be very optimistic at the moment.

Yes, the performances have been a little inconsistent, and the transfers haven’t all worked out, but Enzo Maresca has a squad full of incredible players.

For example, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, and even Reece James, now that he has overcome his injury problems, can all be counted among the best in the world in their respective positions.

Moreover, there is now another gem in the side who could surpass them all to become the outright best in the world.

Reece James' resurgence

So, the first thing to say is that nobody worth listening to has ever questioned James’ innate ability, nor his place among the best full-backs in world football on that ability alone.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, as the saying goes, availability is the best ability, and for a significant portion of the last few years, that has been something that has gone against him.

For example, while he managed to make 26 league appearances in the 21/22 season, he made just 45 over the following three campaigns.

This inability to remain fit and make a significant number of appearances every year was something often held against him when it came down to conversations over who the best right-back was in the country.

However, so far this season has been a different story entirely, as he has not missed a single match due to injury and has played all 11 league games, seven from the start.

In addition to simply being present, the Englishman has also once again reminded rival fans that, at his best, he is capable of things most full-backs couldn’t even dream of doing.

For example, he already has three goal involvements to his name, along with some seriously impressive underlying numbers.

According to FBref, he ranks in the top 1% of full-backs for total passing distance, expected assists, passes into the final third and interceptions, the top 4% for goals plus assists and more, all per 90.

In all, now that he’s staying fit, it’s undeniable that James is one of the best right-backs in the world, and if that isn’t enough, another young talent Chelsea have signed looks like he could become one of the best players in the world outright.

Chelsea's future world-beater

The likes of Caicedo and Palmer might be pushing for the title of best in the world, but based on raw talent and what those in the know say about him, Dastan Satpayev could surpass both.

Chelsea signed the incredibly exciting prospect from the Kazakhstani side Kairat Almaty in February of this year for a fee of around €4m, which is about £3.5m.

Yet, as he’s still just 17 years old, he is not allowed to join up with the club until next season.

The Kazakh wonderkid may not be particularly well-known to fans in England, but he is regarded by many as a seriously significant prospect.

For example, one analyst with extensive knowledge of Kazakhstani football has been bold enough to describe the teenager as “a future Ballon d’Or winner.”

Yet, if that wasn’t encouraging enough, he has also been dubbed “a future rival to Lamine Yamal,” or in other words, someone who will vie for the title of the world’s best as he gets older.

With that said, what about him has people so excited? First of all, despite turning 17 in the summer, the dynamic forward made 29 first-team appearances last season, totalling 2081 minutes, in which he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists.

That comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.31 games, or every 94.59 minutes, which would be an incredible rate of return for a seasoned veteran.

Then, this season he has already made 11 appearances in the Champions League, seven of which were in the qualifying rounds and the other four in the competition proper.

In other words, the youngster is not only producing in the league but is also gaining a tremendous amount of experience in club football’s biggest competition.

Ultimately, it is early on in his career, but Satpayev is already looking like an excellent player, and if those in the know are right, he could become the world’s best at Chelsea.

MLB World in Disbelief Over Yankees Fan Ripping Open Mookie Betts's Glove for Ball

Baseball fans—no matter their allegiance—like to say that every day in baseball you can see something you've never seen before.

On Tuesday, that mantra came true on the biggest of stages.

In the bottom of the first inning of Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday, New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres lofted a foul pop-up to left field. Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts went to make the catch—only to find two Yankees fans attempting to jar the ball of of his hands.

The unreal sequence—among the most brazen fan-interference cases in baseball history—drew commentary across the baseball world.

Stupefied at the audaciousness of the act, some wondered if the fans knew they weren't allowed to interfere.

There is some thin photo evidence to support that theory, with a fan appearing to argue that Betts had violated some sort of boundary.

Yankees fans took the opportunity to bash their scuffling team.

The fan drew a litany of comparisons to comedian Tim Robinson.

What would you expect from such a cartoonish sequence?

Memes flew.

The New York newspapers in the coming days will be must-reads.

A FASE ATUAL!

No Santos, o centroavante vive grande momento.

Spurs have a "special" 17-year-old who's going to steal the #10 from Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur return to action at the end of this week with a clash against Aston Villa at home in the Premier League after the international break.

The Lilywhites are currently third in the table, with one loss in seven matches, and Thomas Frank will be hoping that his team continues to thrive in the top-flight.

He may, however, look for more from certain players in the coming weeks. Xavi Simons, for example, is yet to score a goal since his move from RB Leipzig in the summer.

The Netherlands international, as shown in the graphic below, hit double figures for goals in the 2024/25 campaign for the German outfit before his move to England.

These statistics suggest that there is more to come from the attacking midfielder, who played in a central midfield role against Leeds United last time out, as a goalscoring threat.

Frank needs the Dutchman to step up with more goals and assists this season because the Danish tactician will be without James Maddison for some time yet.

Why James Maddison's injury is a big blow for Spurs

The England international suffered an ACL injury in pre-season and is set to be out for the majority of this season. He recently revealed that his target is to return before the end of the campaign.

This means that the former Leicester and Norwich star will not be available for selection to Frank until near the end of the season at the earliest, which is a big blow because of the quality that he can provide at Premier League level.

Maddison, who has 107 goals and assists in his top-flight career (Transfermarkt), ended the 2024/25 league campaign with a return of nine goals and seven assists in 21 starts for Spurs.

The English attacking midfielder proved that he is worthy of wearing the number ten shirt for Tottenham with his performances in the Premier League, with a consistent stream of goals and assists at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Maddison ranked as one of the most effective attacking midfielders in the Premier League last season when it came to scoring and creating goals per 90.

The likes of Rafa van der Vaart, Harry Kane, Robbie Keane, Teddy Sheringham, and Glenn Hoddle all donned the number ten shirt before the Spurs star inherited it from Kane in the summer of 2023.

Maddison’s impact at the top end of the pitch, with goals and assists, shows that he is worthy of being a number ten for the club, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to get back to his best after an ACL injury.

If the England international does not get back to his best in an attacking midfield role for Spurs, that number ten shirt could be up for grabs in the not-too-distant future.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Whilst some may look to Xavi Simons as a potential successor to Maddison’s number ten shirt, there is an exciting young star in the academy system who could steal the number ten from the vice-captain.

Luca Williams-Barnett made his first-team debut for Tottenham off the bench against Doncaster in the League Cup earlier this season, and could have a bright future in North London.

Why Luca Williams-Barnett can steal the number ten shirt for Spurs

Per Transfermarkt, the 17-year-old starlet has worn the number ten shirt for Spurs at U18, U19, and U21 level so far, which shows that he is a fan of the number.

This suggests that his dream would be to wear the number ten shirt for Tottenham at first-team level in the future, but he currently has Maddison in his way and will need to emerge as a star for Frank’s team to have a shot at claiming it.

Williams-Barnett’s form for the club’s academy so far this season suggests that he is well on his way to breaking into the senior side, which would then put him into contention to steal that shirt number.

The teenage talent, who was hailed as “special” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has scored eight goals and provided five assists in ten appearances in all competitions this season, per Transfermarkt, which includes a three-minute appearance for the first-team.

Williams-Barnett, typically deployed as an attacking midfielder, has delivered consistent performances at the top end of the pitch as both a scorer and a creator of goals in his number ten role.

As you can see in the table above, the 17-year-old starlet’s form since the start of last season has been breathtaking, with a goal or an assist every hour or so on average.

Not only is Williams-Barnett an output machine who can score and create goals at an exceptional rate, but the Spurs sensation also “scores bangers”, per analyst Ben Mattinson on X.

That comment from Mattinson is backed up by the two goals from the attacking midfielder in the video above, as it shows that he is an effective finisher from range.

However, it is now down to Williams-Barnett to prove that he can score and create goals at an impressive rate for the senior team, as he has done at U18, U19, and U21 level so far.

18-year-old Spurs gem is a "superstar" with more talent than Vuskovic

Tottenham Hotspur have a whole host of exciting youngsters to watch out for.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 13, 2025

If Frank provides the England U18 international with a chance to play regular minutes for the first-team, the impressive attacking midfielder may just steal Maddison’s number ten shirt in the future.
