Moeen Ali recalled for Ashes after agreeing Test comeback

Veteran spinner answers England SOS to take on Australia after two years out

Matt Roller07-Jun-20231:38

Is Moeen Ali actually an upgrade on Jack Leach?

Moeen Ali has reversed his retirement from Test cricket and been added to England’s Ashes squad after answering an SOS call from the team’s management.Moeen confirmed to ESPNcricinfo on Monday night that he had been asked to consider a potential call-up following an injury to Jack Leach, who went for scans after England’s 10-wicket win over Ireland at Lord’s which revealed a lower-back stress fracture. He held discussions with Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Rob Key – England’s captain, coach and managing director respectively – and the ECB announced on Wednesday morning that Moeen has agreed to return to Test cricket. He has been added to England’s squad for the first two Ashes Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s.”We reached out to Mo early this week about returning to Test cricket,” Key said. “Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play Test cricket again.”His vast experience, along with his all-round ability, will benefit our Ashes campaign. We wish Mo and the rest of the squad well for the Ashes campaign.”The other main contenders to fill the vacancy created by Leach’s injury were Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks – who both took Test five-wicket hauls in Pakistan in December – and Liam Dawson, who represented a like-for-like replacement as a left-arm spinner.Moeen has not played a first-class match in nearly two years•AFP/Getty Images

Moeen has not played a first-class match since his retirement from Test cricket, which he announced in September 2021 after England’s series against India. He told ESPNcricinfo at the time that he had struggled to “get in the zone” during that series, saying: “I just felt like I wasn’t in it.”He has won the T20 World Cup with England and two IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings since his retirement, and has represented various franchises around the world in between his international commitments. He has also returned to Warwickshire, his home county, and spent the last week captaining their Vitality Blast side. But since McCullum and Stokes took over a year ago, Moeen has become increasingly open to the idea of returning to Test cricket. He said last summer that he would “love” to play under the new regime: “They are both very aggressive and I think I would suit their cricket a bit more.”He gave serious consideration to a return for England’s December tour to Pakistan after discussions with McCullum, but eventually opted against due to the prospect of spending more time away from his family during a busy winter of white-ball cricket.Related

England’s squad will report to Birmingham on Tuesday and have three training days before the start of the series at Edgbaston on June 16. The venue is Moeen’s home ground, but he has not played a red-ball game there since the first Test of the 2019 Ashes, when he took 3 for 172 in the match and was then dropped.Moeen will likely bat at No. 8 if selected but is not a certain starter at this stage. Spinners often play a peripheral role at Edgbaston – only three wickets have fallen to spin in three County Championship games at the venue this season – and with Stokes’ fitness to bowl still unclear, England may be tempted to field an all-seam attack supplemented by Joe Root’s offbreaks. He has struggled against Australia in the past, with 20 wickets at an average of 64.65, though those figures include a gruelling 2017-18 tour in which England’s dearth of spin resources saw him play all five Tests despite ripping his spinning finger open on the seam of the ball early in the tour.

Tom Alsop stars with century as Steve Smith's Ashes build-up stutters again

Sussex made 319 for four and Tom Alsop an unbeaten 118 but the attention was inevitably on Steven Smith, whose Ashes warm-up again failed to ignite as his temporary employer’s LV= Insurance County Championship match against Leicestershire began a day late at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Australia’s chief batting hope to face England this summer, who made a low-key 30 on his Sussex debut at Worcester last week, was back in the pavilion after facing just 14 balls, dismissed leg before wicket by South African seamer Wiaan Mulder for three.Smith, who is halfway through a three-match sojourn with the Division Two side, had spent Thursday ensconced in the dressing room as Leicestershire’s groundstaff tried in vain to make a saturated outfield fit for play.On a cold day in which batting conditions were generally tough, he was held up again as Alsop and Cheteshwar Pujara put on 136 for the third wicket. His chance came when the latter was out for 77 but he never looked at ease, surviving an lbw appeal second ball.Alsop, the 27-year-old left-hander, went on to complete his ninth first-class century in an unbroken stand of 121 with 19-year-old all-rounder James Coles, who is unbeaten on 59. Mulder has figures of three for 52 from 20 overs.Despite Smith’s flop, Sussex should be delighted with their day after being asked to bat first in challenging conditions. How they fare with the ball remains to be seen given that England’s Ollie Robinson is rested and the Australian quick, Nathan McAndrew – their joint leading wicket-taker with Robinson – has had to step aside to accommodate Smith. On a pitch with a good covering of grass, Sussex had been two-down for 91 at lunch after a session played with a chilly wind whipping across the large playing area at Grace Road and the sky uniformly grey.Leicestershire, who dropped the out-of-form Mikey Finan from their seam attack and brought in Will Davis for his first Championship action since June last year, initially struggled to contain the Sussex openers but first change Mulder struck twice in his opening spell. The all-rounder, presented with his county cap during the course of the playless opening day, found the inside edge of Tom Clark’s bat in his second over and followed up by trapping Ali Orr leg before with one that struck him at shin height. But Pujara drew on his deep reserve of experience to frustrate the Leicestershire bowlers, never losing his patience while the going was tough, safe in the knowledge that scoring opportunities would come. The qualities rubbed off on Alsop, who reached his half-century from 126 balls when he drove Chris Wright square of the wicket for his ninth boundary. Alsop made 150 and 60 not out when the sides met at Hove last season, although ultimately eclipsed by double-hundreds from both Mulder and Colin Ackermann in a run-heavy draw.Pujara dealt largely in boundaries, 11 of them in his first 50 (from 113 balls), which he reached by hammering Ackermann’s off-spin through midwicket, the first of three in a row in an over that cost 15 runs. Three more boundaries in Ackermann’s next (and last) over – two of them to Pujara – prompted a reminder that the Indian maestro had passed fifty eight times previously for Sussex and never failed to make 100.It appeared this innings would follow a similar pattern. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, Pujara moved on to 77 and the only moment of obvious good fortune had been an edge off the unlucky Davis that flew between ‘keeper Peter Handscomb and a solitary, wide slip. But then it was over. Tom Scriven, generally tidy albeit cut easily for a 16th four by Pujara the ball prior to his dismissal, bowled the next one straighter and Pujara misjudged it enough to tickle an inside edge on to pad, the ball looping to Handscomb. It was the 24-year-old seamer’s 12th first-class wicket, easily his most satisfying.Pujara’s departure ushered in Smith, but any expectation that Australia’s No. 1 batsman could trump his likely opponent in next month’s World Test Championship final soon evaporated. Smith looked twitchy from the start, surviving a confident appeal for leg before by the eager Scriven from his second ball faced, offering no shot.It appeared only height could have saved him. There was no such doubt three overs later when he shuffled into a ball from Mulder that came back in a little and would certainly have hit. Sussex were well placed on 208 for four at tea, but walked off to a sense of anticlimax. The final session, which would have lasted a marathon 39 overs had bad light not curtailed play 13 overs before the scheduled close, saw Alsop complete a 212-ball century when he cut the occasional spin of Sol Budinger for his 14th four before Leicestershire took the second new ball and Coles go to his fourth first-class fifty from 69 balls, with seven fours and a pulled six off Scriven.

49ers could seal a dream first Rangers signing in £4m SPFL starlet

One topic is dominating the news surrounding Glasgow Rangers at the moment and that is the rumours of a potential takeover by Paraag Marathe – the man behind NFL team the San Francisco 49ers.

Investment is desperately needed at Ibrox, even more so after the events of the current season, with Philippe Clement overseeing a dismal campaign that has most recently delivered a shock Scottish Cup defeat to Championship side Queen’s Park.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement.

While any potential takeover won’t occur for a while yet, according to journalist Chris Jack of the Rangers Review, discussions between 49ers Enterprises and key shareholders have been ongoing for several months, which is promising indeed.

Dave King is the major shareholder at Rangers, owning a stake of 12.96%, followed by Douglas Park and George Taylor, who both have stakes of over 10%.

What Rangers can expect from 49ers takeover

The 49ers are one of the best-run franchises in the NFL. The 49ers Enterprise is currently valued at a staggering $5.97b, ranking them as the 11th most valuable sports empire in the world.

The 49ers are arguably one of the best-run NFL teams in America. Over the previous ten years, they have won three Divisional Championships (2019, 2022, and 2023) while also reaching the Superbowl on two occasions (2019 and 2023).

The 49ers bought a 15% stake in Leeds United back in 2018, which rose to 44% by 2021. Although they were relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season, Leeds look set to make a return to the Premier League this term.

There is talk of expansion at Elland Road. Should Marathe secure the takeover of Rangers, this could benefit the club in the long run.

One area that will be on everyone’s minds at the club, from supporters to those on the current board, is finances. While a financial war chest may not be available straight away, will there be funds for the manager to bolster his side this summer and beyond?

If so, there are a few players that should be brought to Ibrox. Notably, Lennon Miller.

Rangers were linked with Lennon Miller

It is no secret that Rangers have shown interest in Miller over the previous few months. According to the Glasgow Times during the winter transfer window, both the Gers and Celtic were showing plenty of interest in the Motherwell youngster.

The teenager has made waves at the club since making his debut in 2022, aged just 16 years and 6 days in the League Cup. Miller has enjoyed a meteoric rise ever since.

It isn’t just the Old Firm who are keen on securing his services either. Last month, Serie A side Udinese had a bid of around £2.5m rejected by the Steelmen, who are in no mood to let their prized asset depart on the cheap.

Indeed, the Premiership club value Miller at £4m, which could well be in range for the Light Blues this summer, especially if the potential takeover is done and dusted by then.

Clement – if he is still in a job by then – should be doing everything he can to land the midfielder ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Once he leaves Motherwell for new pastures, if it is not for Rangers, then the club will have no chance of signing him in the future.

Lennon Miller’s season in numbers

Watching Miller play and dominate games, it is hard to believe he is still only 18 years old. The midfielder has featured 27 times for Motherwell this season, scoring four goals while registering six assists in all competitions.

Transfer Focus

Capable of playing either in a more advanced role behind the striker, or slightly defensive in front of the back four, Miller has all the tools to be a regular for Rangers or Celtic, no doubt about that.

In the top flight, the youngster averages 1.5 shots per game, along with creating eight big chances, averaging 2.1 key passes per game and succeeding with 52% of his dribble attempts, proving just how effective he can be when bursting into the final third.

Defensively, Miller has also sparkled for the Steelmen. He has averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the Premiership. Furthermore, the Scot wins an impressive 5.9 total duels per game – a success rate of 53% – while recovering 6.6 balls per game.

James McFadden, himself one a teenage prodigy at Motherwell, lauded plenty of praise for Miller during an interview he gave with Open Goal late last year, dubbing the youngster as “ridiculous” due to his ability and future potential.

He could be a dream first signing for the 49ers should a move materialise in the summer. That is almost a certainty.

Where Lennon Miller would fit in at Rangers

One of the strongest areas in the current Rangers side is midfield. Clement can call upon Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande, Connor Barron, and Bailey Rice, while Dundee starlet Lyall Cameron will join the Gers at the end of the season.

As you can see, this area is fairly stacked with talent, but Miller’s ability to play in a few different positions could give Clement a massive boost.

This could see him slot into a number ten role should the opportunity arise, or perhaps a more defensive depending on the opposition.

If Miller keeps performing the way he has been over the previous 12 months, he could become a star at Rangers.

Of course, this might just be a stepping stone for a move elsewhere, either abroad or to the Premier League, but the Ibrox side would surely rake in a significant profit on their initial investment.

The rumours of a reported takeover by the 49ers look to have given the majority of the fanbase a temporary boost, but until the deal is signed, sealed, and delivered, nothing can be assumed.

If they approach it in the right way, this could see Rangers enter a new era beginning the 2025/26 campaign.

Let us just hope it is more successful than the current one.

Not just Onana: Man Utd’s "anonymous" 4/10 dud is now on borrowed time

It is almost three months to the day that Ruben Amorim oversaw his first game in charge of Manchester United, with it taking just 81 seconds for Marcus Rashford – remember him? – to open the scoring in that eventual 1-1 draw away to Ipswich Town.

That largely sticky showing at Portman Road set the tone for what has been a turbulent 12 weeks since then for the Portuguese head coach, with Wednesday’s 3-2 win against the Tractor Boys proving a rare triumph in the 40-year-old’s early United tenure.

Like in that meeting with Kieran McKenna’s men back in the Autumn, there was another fast start this time around, albeit with the Suffolk side taking the lead, courtesy of a calamitous mix-up from Patrick Dorgu and the error-stricken Andre Onana.

To their credit, the Red Devils fought back through a Sam Morsy own goal and a Matthijs de Ligt strike to regain control, only for a Dorgu red card – and a second for Jaden Philogene – just before the break marking a dismal end to the opening 45.

The clouds had gathered over Old Trafford, yet after Harry Maguire powered home from Bruno Fernandes’ corner, the hosts held firm to pick up a vital three points, in turn moving to the heady heights of 14th in the Premier League table.

Quite what Amorim was able to learn from his chaotic side following that breathless encounter remains to be seen, with it having been a real mixed bag of performances.

Man Utd's best performers vs Ipswich

Let’s begin with the man who proved the matchwinner, with Maguire – who scored a last-gasp FA Cup winner just a few weeks ago – getting in on the act again after meeting Fernandes’ outswinger to expertly header home.

Fresh off the back of a rough ride at Goodison Park, in which he notably failed to deal with Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header, the 31-year-old was far more dominant up against the lively Liam Delap, having relished the battle up with the reported United target.

Elsewhere, from the man who once wore the armband to its current incumbent, with Fernandes steering his side over the line following a “talismanic” midfield showing, as hailed by journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

Bruno Fernandes

Involved in all three goals following a trio of delightful set-piece deliveries, the Portuguese magician produced a real captain’s performance when United needed it most, a fact epitomised by his surging forward run down the left flank late in the day, with his inventive pull-back only narrowingly missing the sliding Noussair Mazraoui.

It has been said time and again but it is impossible to imagine just where the Red Devils would be without their midfield maestro, with Fernandes having again pulled the strings beautifully after registering four key passes in total, while also winning five of his seven total duels.

Like Maguire, the 30-year-old was right at the heart of the action at both ends of the pitch. The same, sadly, can’t be said for everyone…

Man Utd's "anonymous" figure vs Ipswich

As De Ligt prodded home for his second league goal of the season, it may have been overlooked that the Dutchman is actually now level with a certain Rasmus Hojlund for top-flight goals in 2024/25. Two in 22 for any striker worth their salt is grim reading indeed.

Chalkboard

Signed for an initial £64m back in the summer of 2023 – a figure which eclipses the fees dished out by Manchester City and Newcastle United for Erling Haaland (£51.2m) and Alexander Isak (£63m), no less – the 22-year-old Dane simply can’t buy a goal right now, having again been off the boil at Old Trafford.

There may be an argument that Hojlund simply does not get the service, having actually only missed three big chances this term, yet Wednesday night showed that even when openings do present themself, he is just not able to capitalise.

That was most apparent early in the second half, with the former Atalanta starlet opting to dummy Leny Yoro’s pullback after fine work from the Frenchman, rather than attempting to lash home himself with his stronger left foot.

As journalist Sam Pilger stated, the “anonymous” forward is now simply “sad to witness”, while his “confidence is on the floor”. As Luckhurst noted in his post-match player ratings for the Manchester Evening News, Hojlund was ‘not in the game at all in the first half and should have been the one to go off for Noussair Mazraoui.’

The issue is that it’s not even just in front of goal where the 4/10 man is found wanting, with his all-round contribution also under the microscope having failed to win a single duel on the night, while also being restricted to just 12 touches in all, fewer than fellow underperformer Onana who had 29.

The United number nine did enjoy a 100% pass accuracy rate, yet it was another game that largely passed him by, with it looking as if he could now be on borrowed time amid the looming presence of young Chido Obi.

As Hojlund showed last season, after ending as the club’s top goalscorer, there is a player in there somewhere.

At a club like United, however, if you don’t kick on, you’ll quickly find yourself being kicked out.

Amorim must finally drop Hojlund and unleash Man Utd’s "homegrown Osimhen"

Man Utd need a new source of goals and they could do so by dropping Rasmus Hojlund.

Netherlands seamers, O'Dowd all but knock Zimbabwe out

Firsts are often memorable occasions and Netherlands ensured that they would only have fond memories of their maiden T20I at the Adelaide Oval. Their batting mainstay Max O’Dowd exuded calmness to help them through a small run-chase against Zimbabwe with a steady 52-run knock to all but end their hopes of making the semi-finals. This was after a fine seam-bowling performance from Netherlands – led by Paul van Meekeren’s three-for – helped skittle Zimbabwe for 117.Only Sikandar Raza stood tall yet again for Zimbabwe as their batters failed to counter accurate fast bowling and fell prey to clever changes of pace that they bowled. In response, O’Dowd and Tom Cooper stitched together a 73-run partnership which ensured Netherlands did not lose early wickets in clusters. While Zimbabwe mathematically still cling on, any result in the India-Bangladesh contest will knock them out.Seam, swing and all that
The two colours that generally make for good viewing were on display at the Adelaide Oval – blue, sunny skies after a rainy build-up and an even covering of green grass on the surface. But Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine had little hesitation in batting first even as his opposite number seemed content with what they had to do. You could see why.A left-arm bowler swung it into the right-hander (away from the left-hander). Then a right-arm seamer did the opposite. After Fred Klaassen came perilously close to nicking Ervine off in the opening over, van Meekeren drew first blood in the next. He began with a misdirected inswinger to the left-handed Ervine before castling Madhevere with a peach. Madhevere was rooted to the crease expecting an outswinger but instead received a full and straight ball on middle, which he missed a belated flick off to be bowled. It was then time for Brandon Glover to come to party. He began with five straight dots, which led to Ervine top-edge an attempted flick with Scott Edwards completing a well-judged catch. In his next over, Glover saw Regis Chakabva survive two chances – one when Bas de Leede failed to cling on to a cut at backward point and then on the very next ball when Edwards grassed a regulation diving catch. But, much like Madhevere, Chakabva lost the mind game against Glover as he was stuck to his crease expecting another one outside off, only to be trapped in front by a full and straight one in line of the stumps. Zimbabwe were reduced to 20 for 3 inside the powerplay, as a result.Sikandar Raza top-scored with a 24-ball 40 for Zimbabwe•ICC via Getty Images

Raza, again
It was yet again up to Raza to rescue Zimbabwe, for the umpteenth time in recent games. He was starved of strike for two overs upon his entry before he got going of a 14-run over off Glover. He targeted the short, square region on the leg side to pepper his pull strokes and used his might to smoke generally un-hittable length balls over the bowler’s head. He found an ally in Sean Williams, who played a steady hand in their 48-run partnership.Even after Williams fell, Raza did not slow down. He smoked two more sixes – the second off Glover (again) made a sound you’d want to use for one of your phone alerts. In all, Raza scored 26 off the 11 balls he faced from Glover, after the bowler had two wickets – including a wicket-maiden – and had conceded just two runs from his first two overs. But once Raza fell trying to take on the longer long-on boundary off Bas de Leede – back after he was replaced in the match against Pakistan due to concussion – Zimbabwe lost their last five wickets for 25 to fold for 117.O’Dowd denies Zimbabwe
O’Dowd enhanced his batting credentials in this men’s T20 World Cup with his second half-century in the competition. It was not all smooth-flowing for him though. Even though he managed to hit a four in each of Tendai Chatara’s three overs in the powerplay, he could only score 14 off the 18 balls he faced in the phase. He was regularly beaten on the outside edge, courtesy Chatara’s outswingers, and it was almost like the phase was being played on repeat. It was only when he picked up a Richard Ngarava slower delivery early after the powerplay and then followed it with a gorgeous inside-out six over extra cover off Sean Williams that he had truly announced himself. By that time, Cooper, who perhaps knows the Adelaide Oval conditions like the back of his hand thanks to his stints in Australian domestic circuit, had got into a roll and his alliance with O’Dowd had all but sealed the deal for Netherlands.Even though Zimbabwe managed to pick up four wickets for 26 with Cooper’s fall, a total of just 117 was never really going to be enough.

Arteta struck gold on incredible Arsenal star worth millions more than Tel

After over a month of rumours and speculation, Arsenal ended the transfer window with a grand total of zero first team signings.

Mikel Arteta’s squad are still just about in the Premier League title race, are flying in the Champions League and have the slimmest of chances to overturn their two-goal deficit in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Newcastle United, but with no new addition to their thread-bare attack, the chance of any silverware feels distant.

Perhaps the disappointment stems from the fact that the North Londoners were linked to a plethora of tremendous attackers, from RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko to Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, only to end up with nothing.

At the same time, fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur secured the services of the incredibly exciting Mathys Tel, who was also linked with the Gunners, on a short-term loan with an option to buy at £45m.

However, while the Frenchman would have been a brilliant addition to the squad, Arteta already has a winger worth millions upon millions more who could still have a significant impact on the team’s fortunes.

Why Arsenal would have wanted Tel

So, while we now know that Tel ended up joining the white side of North London, why would Arsenal have considered signing him before that happened?

Mathys Tel

Well, you only have to look at his record from last season to see why, as in the relatively small amount of minutes he was given, he made quite an impact.

For example, in 41 appearances, totalling 1406 minutes, the 19-year-old phenomenon racked up a seriously impressive tally of ten goals and six assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.56 games, or every 87.87 minutes.

Moreover, on top of scoring and assisting goals for fun, the Sarcelles-born dynamo is positionally versatile, and while he can play across the front three, he excels off the left and down the middle.

However, he has not played much at all this season, and in the 14 appearances he has made, which amounts to 458 minutes, he’s provided just one assist, which points to him still being quite raw.

So, when you take that into account, it does make a little more sense why Arsenal were unwilling to take him at present when they need players who can make a guaranteed impact, especially when they should be getting one of their own superstars back next month who can do just that and is worth millions more.

The Arsenal star worth millions more than Tel

So, to get straight to the point, the Arsenal star we are talking about is, unsurprisingly, Bukayo Saka.

The Hale End graduate has developed into the club’s talisman over the last few years and, according to the CIES Football Observatory, is currently worth up to a staggering €157m, which is about £131m, or at least £86m more than Spurs may end up paying for Tel.

In even better news, he could be back on the pitch at some point next month.

Now, it’s often challenging to justify the extravagant valuations of players, but in this case, it’s really not, as over the last few seasons, the homegrown superstar has reached a level many argue is world-class.

For example, last season, the “incredible” winger, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists in just 47 appearances, totalling 3865 minutes, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 1.38 games, or every 113.67 minutes across an entire campaign.

Somehow, prior to his injury, the 23-year-old monster was on track to do even better this season, racking up a sensational tally of nine goals and 13 assists in just 24 appearances, totalling 1828 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.09 games, or every 83.09 minutes.

When you add to that the fact he’s won back-to-back Player of the Year Awards for England while racking up a haul of 12 goals and seven assists in 43 games, it becomes hard to deny that he is more than worth his lofty valuation.

Ultimately, Arsenal fans might be understandably annoyed at missing out on Tel to Spurs, but once Saka comes back into the side next month, the world will be watching the latter, not the former.

Shohidul Islam banned for 10 months for failing doping test

A urine sample provided by Shohidul contained Clomifene, which is on the WADA’s prohibited list

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2022The ICC has banned Bangladesh fast bowler Shohidul Islam for 10 months for failing a dope test in March. Shohidul, who admitted to breaching Article 2.1 of the ICC Anti-Doping Code and accepted the suspension, will be available from March 28 next year, after his sentence was backdated to May 28, the date of his acceptance of the voluntary provisional suspension.According to the ICC media release, Shohidul had provided a urine sample in an out-of-competition testing programme in Dhaka on March 4. The sample contained Clomifene, which according to the governing body is a specified substance under WADA’s prohibited list and is prohibited both in-competition and out-of-competition.ESPNcricinfo has learned that the prohibited substance was found in a medicine that Shohidul had taken, prescribed by his own doctor, earlier this year.In making the decision, the ICC accepted that Shohidul had “demonstrated no significant fault or negligence, having inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance which was contained in a medicine he had been legitimately prescribed for therapeutic reasons.”The ICC added that Shohidul was able to satisfy that he had “no intention to enhance his sporting performance by using prohibited substances. However, Shohidul accepted that he had failed to satisfy the high levels of personal responsibility incumbent upon him as an international cricketer subject to anti-doping rules.”Shohidul, who made his only T20I appearance against Pakistan last year in Dhaka, has been part of several Bangladesh squads over the last 18 months. He has taken 93 wickets and scored one century from 35 first-class matches, apart from his 69 wickets from 46 T20s. Earlier this year, he was hailed after bowling Comilla Victorians to their third BPL title. Shohidul is considered one of the bright fast-bowling prospects in Bangladesh.

Newcastle keen on signing "forceful and effective" £25m player in January

Newcastle United are interested in signing a serial Champions League winner in the January transfer window, according to an exciting new update.

Newcastle transfer rumours

Eddie Howe’s side have really found their groove in recent weeks, going from being a side underperforming in the Premier League to a team who now look like strong top-four challengers.

The 2-0 win away to Manchester United on Monday night was Newcastle’s latest impressive result, with the team suddenly clicking from back to front, not least because of the brilliant form of star striker Alexander Isak leading the line.

That’s not to say that new signings at St James’ Park wouldn’t be appreciated in January, however, and various top-quality players are being touted as possible additions. Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn is seen as an exciting option on the right wing, as the Magpies look for more quality in that position, with the 25-year-old already bagging seven goals and six assists in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Newcastle are also reportedly favourites to complete the signing of AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, as Howe looks to improve his defensive options. The Englishman is open to the idea of returning to England, having not always managed to be a regular starter for his current club this season.

Newcastle keen on serial Champions League winner

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Newcastle and PIF are keen on signing Paris Saint-Germain star Marco Asensio in January, seeing him as a new target this month.

He is willing to seal a move away from the Ligue 1 side and is even believed to be in talks with the Magpies over a move, as well as Premier League rivals Aston Villa. PSG aren’t thought to want more than £25m for his services, but Newcastle would prefer a loan deal.

Asensio would be a big-name statement signing by Newcastle, but at 28, it also wouldn’t be a case of them snapping up a high-profile individual who is past his peak years.

The Spaniard has so much pedigree throughout his career, winning the Champions League three times with Real Madrid and scoring in one final, while Carlo Ancelotti has heaped praise on him in the past, saying:

“He was the best of the match. He mixed well with Valverde. He was forceful and effective. The best. His attitude when he wasn’t playing was good. I had no doubts, but when you’re not happy you can have a negative or positive attitude. He chose the positive.”

Admittedly, Asensio’s time at PSG has been less memorable overall, with only seven goals coming his way in 46 appearances, but he remains such a talented footballer – one who could arguably do with a fresh challenge at this point in his career.

Newcastle agree deal to sell "important" player who Eddie Howe loves

He would be a big loss for the Magpies…

ByBarney Lane Jan 2, 2025

He is arguably at his best on the right-hand side, cutting onto his deadly left foot, so he could be a standout option to be an upgrade on Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron, with the latter potentially moving from Newcastle this month.
