Aston Villa leading the race for "unplayable" talent who’s just Coutinho 2.0

With the January transfer window now in full swing, the wait is on to see if high-flying Aston Villa will bolster their ranks this month, with a senior signing yet to be made by the Midlands side.

While recent reports have indicated that a deal to sign 18-year-old defender Kosta Nedeljkovic from Red Star Belgrade is near completion, the teenager is not expected to make the move to England until the summer, ensuring he is merely more of a long-term addition for those at Villa Park.

There will undoubtedly be a desire to see a more marquee name brought into the club who can immediately impact the first team, although supporters will be wary of getting stung with the signing of a high-profile figure, as they did with a certain Philippe Coutinho two years ago.

According to the latest reports, however, it looks as if the title hopefuls could be said to repeat their prior mistake with the signing of another mercurial Brazilian talent…

Aston Villa want to sign ex-Premier League flop

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, as relayed by Il Bianconero, Villa are currently leading the race to sign Lazio playmaker, Felipe Anderson, with the former West Ham United man seemingly up for grabs with just six months left on his existing deal in Rome.

The report suggests that the Serie A side are planning to offer the 30-year-old – who is also attracting interest from Juventus – a contract extension until 2028, albeit with Unai Emery's side currently in the 'front row' for his signature, if a new deal is not agreed.

Lazio player Felipe Anderson.

Once West Ham's club-record signing at £36m, the experienced forward – who is now valued at €15m (£13m) by CIES Football Observatory – lasted just three years at the London Stadium before moving to the Italian capital on a measly £2.6m deal, albeit with the Hammers able to recoup 50% of any future sale.

Felip Anderson's record in the Premier League

On the face of it, it may seem an astute move for Emery and Monchi to snap up the two-cap Brazil international on the cheap, particularly with Anderson having flourished at the Stadio Olimpico of late, scoring twice and providing seven assists in all competitions this season.

In total, the £47k-per-week enigma has contributed 55 goals and 63 assists in 303 games for his current side across two spells, although that should not cloud what was largely an underwhelming prior stint in English football.

As Forbes' Adam Digby stated amid the 5 foot 9 maverick's move from Lazio to the Irons in 2018, he can "be either unplayable for opposition defences or, er, unplayable for his own manager. Brilliant or awful, depending on the day/month/weather/time" – a prediction that ultimately came to fruition for the Hammers.

A return of 12 goals and 13 assists in 72 games for the east London outfit was hardly the most impressive, with that including just 18 goals and assists in 63 Premier League appearances.

Like the "creative genius" that is Coutinho, as described by pundit Phil Thompson, Anderson can be capable of moments of magic – as shown below – but too often does he prove wholly unreliable or inconsistent.

It may be unwise to think that the one-time Porto loanee can enjoy a different story this time around, while any deal would merely be a short-term capture, much like the addition of a then 29-year-old Coutinho in 2022.

Despite the fanfare surrounding the initial temporary arrival of the latter man from Barcelona, he currently finds himself out on loan at Qatari side Al-Duhail, having scored just six goals and contributed only three assists in 43 games for the Villa Park side.

Aston Villa to launch bid to sign their most exciting talent since Grealish

Unai Emery is eyeing up a move for a Turkish prospect who has a bright future.

ByTom Lever Jan 17, 2024

Even after previously flourishing in the Premier League, unlike Anderson, for Liverpool – for whom he registered 99 goal involvements in 201 games – Coutinho couldn't make it work second time around, with Villa lumped with a costly mistake on a reported £145k-per-week wage, prior to his move to Qatar.

To then snap up a move for Coutinho's compatriot – who also typically operates as a number ten or on the flanks – surely feels too much like history repeating itself…

Chelsea chiefs set sights on Alessandro Buongiorno after Mourinho message

Chelsea chiefs are reportedly eyeing up a new defender target after their former fan favourite head coach Jose Mourinho lavished him with praise.

Pochettino keen to sign centre-back in January

Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino, in an attempt to turn around his side's stumbling fortunes as of late, is very keen to bring in a new centre-back next month.

Todd Boehly wants to back his coach yet again.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 15, 2023

Recent reports claim Wolves defender Max Kilman is a target for Chelsea, among many others, as Pochettino seeks to sign players with height and presence in the box.

The Argentine also made a public plea for new signings earlier this week, as he believes that Chelsea currently lack a real aggression both defensively and further forward.

"Maybe we need to do something," said Pochettino after Everton in a subtle message to the board. "Some movement that is a thing to analyse with the sporting director, the owner and to change the dynamic and to improve in the second part of the season because we need to be more aggressive.

"It is not only to dominate and play well, it is to compete better but we cannot show this lack of concentration and concede the goal we conceded. We were punished too much today, too many positive things, I know it is difficult to talk about positive things in this position."

Chelsea next take on Sheffield United in the Premier League this afternoon, a match which should result in a much-needed three points while arresting their recent decline, if all goes to plan.

Chelsea chiefs eyeing Alessandro Buongiorno

As per the outlet's sources, Chelsea chiefs are eyeing Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno amid his excellent campaign in Serie A.

The Italy international, who has become a fixture of the national team's starting eleven under Luciano Spalletti, is also described as "vital" to the Torino cause. This has attracted attention from west London, with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy thought to be closely following Boungiorno with a view to making a potential move.

As shared by The Sun, this also comes after former Chelsea boss Mourinho publicly endorsed the centre-back recently. Torino have already rejected a £12.5 million bid from an Italian side for his services, believing they could acquire far more from a Premier League side.

They're believed to value him at around £35 million, which could arguably come as a bargain considering Buongiorno is one of Serie A's most in-form defensive stars right now. Juventus, Inter Milan and Mourinho's Roma are also in the chase.

Spotlight on Keaton Jennings as England ponder whether to stick or twist after Barbados debacle

Denly waits in the wings but will England abandon investment in opener who has struggled against seam?

George Dobell in Barbados29-Jan-2019

Keaton Jennings drives and is caught at slip•Getty Images

Like the hunt for the Holy Grail and the lost city of Atlantis, England’s search for opening batsmen has gone on so long, you wonder if they exist. For while Rory Burns impressed in Barbados, the worries over Keaton Jennings are mounting. He is still yet to reach 50 in the 11 Tests he’s played outside Asia, with his apparent struggles against seam bowling causing concern ahead of the Ashes, which is now just three Tests away. All of which leaves England with a dilemma ahead of the final two Tests of their Caribbean tour. In short, do they twist or stick with him?The short-term answer may well be to be stick. It is only four Tests since he made a fine century in Galle and he has proved extremely useful at short-leg. He is a popular and positive member of the squad and there will be much goodwill and patience extended to him.Just as pertinently, there are not a host of candidates knocking down the door to take his place. The only realistic alternative on this tour is Joe Denly, who has some experience as opener but has more recently batted at No. 3 and No. 4 in Division Two of Championship cricket, while Jason Roy, who does not open in Championship cricketfor Surrey and did not open on the Lions tour for England, might also force his way in over the coming months. There is a serious possibility Denly could open in Antigua and provide a secondary spin-bowling option. But the fact that England are now considering non-specialists to attempt one of the most specialised jobs in the game, underlines the extent of the problem. They have tried more than a dozen county openers and, to greater or lesser extent, found them all wanting. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the County Championship, squeezed into early and late summer where conditions disproportionately assist medium-pace swing and seam bowling, is not producing opening batsmen who are able to withstand Test quality pace bowling. It is hard to be wildly optimistic of Jennings’ ability to deal with Australia’s seamers. But with modern selectors quite rightly keen to provide their players with a decent run of games in which to attempt to find their feet – most openers have had seven or eight Tests to do so – they might be slightly reluctant to bring in Denly into the side now as it could leave them obliged to persist with him in the Ashes. Really, in retrospect, this wasn’t as well-balanced a squad as it may have appeared when it was selected.Jennings is only one of England’s issues ahead of the Antigua Test, which starts on Thursday. The pitch looks, at this stage, surprisingly green though it is expected to be dry and good for batting. As a consequence, England may well want to play an extra seamer but be reluctant to lose the second spinner. Pressure on Adil Rashid, who neither threatened or offered control in Barbados, and Ben Foakes, who is unfortunate enough to be playing alongside other capable keeper-batsmen, is particularly intense. Chris Woakes, who did not train on Tuesday, would appear to be out of the mix, but Stuart Broad and Jack Leach are right in it.As things stand, it seems likely England will revert to a five-man attack containing four seamers and one spinner.Meanwhile Burns, one of the few positives from England’s batting in Barbados, suggested they may try and target Roston Chase more in future.”It’s a lesson,” he said of the Barbados defeat. “With a four-man pace attack and one spinner can we put the spinner under more pressure. We can make the seamers come back and work harder.”They bowled very well in the first innings. I was out there for 25 balls and I can’t remember getting a ball to hit, really. We weren’t able to transfer the pressure back onto them and absorb the pressure.”For us it’s about how do we transfer that pressure. It’s only going to help having had a view of their bowlers. But they’re a very good attack.”

5 players now fighting for their Norwich City career under Wagner

Norwich City managed to get back to winning ways right before the International break kicked in, David Wagner's Canaries coming from behind against Cardiff City to win 3-2 on their travels to the Welsh capital.

Two goals in the final ten minutes for the travelling Yellows secured the dramatic three points, a fortunate Ryan Wintle own goal trickling in to level the scores with Adam Idah then becoming Norwich's hero on the day to score a late winner.

Still, the mood around Norwich is sour – the Canaries are way off the promotion pack near the top of the division, with thoughts in Norfolk centreing on the fact Wagner has just simply bought himself more time to cling onto his precarious job post with this victory.

Wagner can't take all the blame for Norwich's recent woes however, with a number of players falling short of their usual standards this season to contribute to the ongoing mess.

Here are five players taking up 15% of the wage bill in the Canaries camp who could be sweating about their immediate futures in the first team…

1

Onel Hernandez

With the Norfolk-based club since the 2017-18 season, it could be time for the eight-time Cuba international to move on permanently to a new club in the near future.

Hernandez has been shipped out on loan in recent years in the hopes to get him back up to speed, but this season for Norwich as a regular first-teamer again, he is floundering in the Championship when needed.

Averaging a sub-par 6.65 Sofascore rating this season, the once electric winger – who scored eight times during the 2018-19 promotion season under previous manager Daniel Farke – is now largely anonymous in matches with zero goals this term and just one meagre assist next to his name.

Displays against Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough really highlighted Hernandez's current ineffectiveness, the Canaries humbled on their own turf both times with their Cuban midfielder way off the pace – successful with just one of his three dribble attempts against Boro, whilst his display against Rovers saw him dodge defensive duties with only three of his eight ground duels won as per Sofascore.

Hernandez will be fighting for his Norwich career with the January transfer window coming into view, the 30-year-old in dire need of revitalising his faltering time at Carrow Road.

2

Przemysław Płacheta

Similarly, Norwich's Polish midfielder Płacheta is also at a point in his Canaries career where he could be easily moved on.

Signed with high hopes he could be a star down the left wing for Norwich – Płacheta once an exciting up-and-coming prospect coming through at RB Leipzig in Germany – the 25-year-old hasn't ever really got going for the Yellows since making the move from his native Poland in 2020.

Loaned out to Birmingham City last season, Płacheta hasn't arrived back to Carrow Road as a different beast unfortunately and finds himself on the periphery yet again.

Averaging 36 minutes on the pitch for Wagner's underperformers this season as per Sofascore, Płacheta has regularly underwhelmed when substituted on.

Norwich's number 20 was afforded 63 minutes on the pitch versus Coventry City at the start of October, but was more of a hindrance to his side in that draw than an attacking outlet – giving up three fouls in the contest, whilst also only successfully dribbling one out of four dribble attempts versus the Sky Blues.

Płacheta's saving grace could be Jonathan Rowe departing in January, freeing up a left-wing spot for Norwich's number 20 to fill if he can turn around his Canaries career.

3

Ben Gibson

Centre-back Ben Gibson is also fighting for his career in Norfolk, the ex-Middlesbrough defender not covering himself in glory with his displays at the back this season before picking up a foot injury.

His final display before being sidelined was a commendable one, attempting to play the role of brick wall for the Canaries away at Sunderland in a 3-1 defeat, but his other displays from October left much to be desired.

Displays against Leeds United and Swansea City showcased his frailties for all to see, winning only one of his four attempted ground and aerial duels versus the Whites as per Sofascore whilst also being wasteful with the ball away at the Swans with possession lost 11 times.

His usual starting spot in the Norwich backline is now up for grabs, with younger and fresher options such as Jaden Warner given a chance in his place.

It will be intriguing to see whether Gibson does come straight back into the first team when his injury has healed up, or whether he's reduced to a reserve player for the Canaries.

4

George Long

Summer signing Long hasn't made the most of Angus Gunn's absence from the first team in goal, Norwich's usual shot-stopper sidelined much like Gibson with a knock.

His goalkeeping display in the 3-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers recently saw Long have a torrid afternoon, making only one meaningful save all game as per Sofascore with the Rovers forwards buoyed on as a result.

Even in the Cardiff win, Long managed to concede two goals in quick succession – the Bluebirds benefitting much like Blackburn.

With suggestions that Angus Gunn could be back to full fitness for this weekend's second-tier clash versus QPR, it wouldn't be a shock at all to see the Norwich number 12 give his temporary number one spot back up to the returning Scotsman.

He would revert back to a position on the bench again most likely, back-up goalkeeper duties resumed for the ex Millwall man.

5

Adam Idah

It's time now for Idah to step up to the plate for Norwich and become their starting striker, the Irishman who has been with the Canaries as a youngster since featuring in the Academy always playing second fiddle to another figure up top.

Norwich need a new talismanic figure in attack too, especially in the wake of Teemu Pukki departing the Yellows this summer – a reliable replacement for the out-going Finnish icon never found.

Idah will have to fight in order to stake a claim to be the starting striker Norwich desire therefore, the 22-year-old only starting seven games this season for his employers as per Sofascore.

Yet, with his late strike sealing a win away at Cardiff last match, Norwich's number 11 could have played himself into contention for a starting spot against QPR this coming weekend.

He's even scored on International duty with the Republic of Ireland in the break from Championship football, netting versus New Zealand.

Spinners strangle Pakistan in big New Zealand win

Both teams had got off to strong starts with the bat, but New Zealand’s spinners were the difference in a 54-run win

The Report by Varun Shetty15-Nov-2018World No. 3 New Zealand took their first step towards sealing third place in Group B with a comprehensive win over Pakistan. With India’s result against Ireland earlier on Thursday ruling both these teams out of the semi-final race before the match began, the tempo of the game was fast and free-flowing. But New Zealand’s batting might was backed up by their spinners in the middle overs, and after enduring a nervous start courtesy Javeria Khan in their defence of 144, New Zealand folded Pakistan rapidly to seal the 54-run win. Offspinner Jess Watkin took 3 for 9 in her four overs and was chiefly responsible for Pakistan’s slow combustion. Legspinner Amelia Kerr played support with 3 for 21.Javeria Khan on how women’s cricket in Pakistan can improve

On what the PCB can do: “Our grass-roots level is not that good, PCB are working on it. They are opening academies, and with the [development of the] grass-roots level we’ll get talent, we’ll get bench strength.
“And of course [playing] more matches [will help]. Because, as I said, if we play these kind of matches, we’ll get to know how we have to react in those situations. We are, every time, making the same mistakes. When we get these kind of matches more, then we’ll be able to cut these mistakes down.”
On domestic leagues: “I’m not sure about this. We’ll see how it goes. If it happens, it’s good for the girls. We always say that the leagues which countries have, like Australia, England and even Bangladesh, [that’s good for development].
“So if our girls get exposure from these kind of leagues, go there and play and we have our own league, it will help us. I would urge every country that they should consider Pakistan players, so that we grow at a better pace.”

Both teams were aggressive during the batting Powerplays, but New Zealand found more in their top order than Pakistan would in chase. They reverted to their traditional opening pair of Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine and it was rewarded instantly when the pair put on 59. Importantly, New Zealand didn’t let the rate fall even after Bates was dismissed, with No. 3 Amy Satterthwaite dropping anchor and allowing the more settled Devine to take on the attack. This was followed by another productive partnership between Satterthwaite and Katie Martin that kept the run rate hovering about 6.5 till the 18th over.Pakistan bowled tightly in pockets, but sloppy ground fielding and a dropped catches seemed to regularly make their way in and break any passage where they created pressure. Any success they would have with the ball was delayed, with four wickets falling in the last two overs, but even there, it was bittersweet. Martin and Maddy Green combined to make 18 runs off boundaries as New Zealand pushed to finish on 144.Pakistan’s response was energetic and almost mirrored those final overs from New Zealand’s innings; and they managed to do it without losing any wickets for three overs. Javeria and Ayesha Zafar stunned New Zealand with seven boundaries in the first three overs, and at 31 in three overs, Pakistan had brought the asking rate down dramatically. Javeria hit five of those fours, cashing on short balls from Devine and putting pressure on 18-year-old Kerr, manipulating the leg-side field, and even riding her luck with an inside edge to get three boundaries off the teenager’s first over.Javeria Khan hit six fours in her 36•IDI/Getty ImagesBut Zafar was caught off the glove first ball of the fourth over against Leigh Kasperek, and from there it became evident that any fight they showed would be a lone battle from Javeria. No. 3 Umaima Sohail looked out of sorts every ball of her five-ball innings till Lea Tahuhu burst through her defence in the next over, and Bismah Maroof fell to Watkin shortly after the Powerplay had ended. Pakistan were 52 for 3 in the seventh over, still a decent rate, but the new batsmen coming in took time to settle. This forced Javeria’s hand and Pakistan’s captain fell in the ninth over for a 23-ball 36 – caught off the glove, trying to reverse-sweep Watkin. Pakistan had made only five between her wicket and that of Maroof’s, in the span of two overs. And they made only one more over the next six balls when the fifth wicket fell for 58. This was the period where New Zealand’s spinners combined to squeeze the middle order who, to their credit, were still looking to score boundaries. It was just a case of being outdone by a quality spin attack on a highly conducive pitch. Very soon Pakistan realised they had no answers and the end parts of the innings became exhibitions in swinging across the line. Medium-pacer Hannah Rowe tucked in a nice little spell during that period and Kerr returned to take two wickets in the 18th over to bowl Pakistan out for 90 in their final group game.

West Indies defend 106 with Dottin's 5 for 5

by 60 runs
A spell-binding display of fast bowling from Deandra Dottin rescued West Indies after their batting faltered in unfriendly conditions for strokeplay in Guyana. She finished with the third-best figures ever recorded in women’s T20Is – 3.4-0-5-5 – as Bangladesh crumbled to 46 all out chasing a mere 107.It was pace that caused all the problems. Pace on a pitch that discouraged it. But Dottin didn’t care. She was the fourth bowler used, in the ninth over of the game, and made her threat quite plain. A bouncer fetched her first wicket – caught and bowled. An inswinger veering into the stumps brought her more success. A new batsman walked out without a helmet and a short ball coming for her throat made her reassess. Quickly.Bangladesh were unprepared for such fury. Their feet wouldn’t move. Their bats didn’t work. And their presence barely mattered. Dottin only saw the wickets behind Fargana Hoque, Nigar Sultana, Rumana Ahmed, Lata Mondal and Salma Khatun. She broke them four times in 22 deliveries to pick up the best haul by a West Indian in women’s T20Is.It makes sense to have the hosts play in the prime-time spot on a triple-header day, and to keep the early one for India games considering the time zones. But that meant they had to deal with a pitch that was very slow and low. Bangladesh had prepared for that, packing their XI with spinners, with Rumana’s legbreaks particularly hard to get away. The 27-year old who learnt part of her craft from Australia’s Stuart MacGill finished with 2 for 16, using the crease well and putting so much work on the ball that it drifted, dipped and turned too.Her job was made a touch easier thanks to Jahanara Alam. The former captain took two wickets in the third over of the game to set West Indies back. Hayley Matthews – the player of the match in the final of the 2016 edition – was caught superbly by Lata Mondal at mid-off. Dottin fell the very next ball, victim of another fine fielding effort, at point by Fahima Khatun. West Indies had lost a hefty chunk of their fire power with more than three-fourths of the innings left. The energy Bangladesh showed while fielding and the confidence they had while bowling, dissipated as soon as they returned to the dressing room. Jahanara, who picked up three wickets, including a ridiculous return catch, where she over-ran the ball, but stuck her left hand behind her only for it to stick, spoke rather nervously during the mid-game interview. “We’ll try,” she said.On the other hand, West Indies began their night dancing. They had to get serious, double-time, when their top order vanished, leaving the captain Stafanie Taylor to not only hold things together but also cobble up a meaningful total. She made 29 off 44 balls, her natural attacking intent curbed by the conditions and the lack of support. Eventually, she found help from wicketkeeper Kycia Knight, who managed 32 from 24, even as her team-mates yelled and cheered at the boundary edge. The coach Hendy Springer, meanwhile, was seen performing a literal face palm after his team slipped to 50 for 5.Those last few runs – 28 came in the final three overs – had geed West Indies up. They walked out for the second innings after a much more solemn huddle but were back to higher spirits in no time. Shakera Selman picked up a wicket with her sixth delivery. Then she made the ball ghost Jahanara for several torturous minutes before putting her out of her misery – the outswinger that kept beating her bat finally pinging off it only to be caught at mid-off. The crowd, by this time, had sensed a fightback was on. And if they didn’t, the insanely cool secret handshake that Selman and Matthews exchanged right there on the pitch left room for little doubt. The defending champions had found a foothold and they weren’t letting go.

Liverpool transfer news: "Really interesting" midfielder on FSG shortlist

Liverpool have long been linked with Brazilian midfielder Andre, but they are also eyeing a move for another exciting South American prospect, according to a fresh transfer update.

Andre to Liverpool update

It was obvious that huge changes were needed to the Reds' midfield at the end of last season, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson performing way below their usual standards. The trio of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all out of contract, too, and it became clear that none of them would be retained.

With those five players all departing, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all came in, and Liverpool immediately looked much better for it, mounting a Premier League title challenge currently.

There are still many Reds supporters who believe that another defensive midfielder needs to arrive in the January transfer window, however, and Andre to Liverpool is a transfer saga that has gained momentum in recent months. The Fluminense youngster continues to be linked with a move to Anfield at the start of 2024, having already become a dominant presence in the No.6 role for his current club.

While plenty of focus appears to be on Liverpool getting a deal over the line for the 22-year-old, it looks as though the Merseysiders are also keen on another highly-rated player from the same region.

Ezequiel Fernandez to Liverpool

According to a new transfer update from Gazzetta dello Sport, Ezequiel Fernandez is a target for Liverpool, with the Reds seeing him as an exciting option alongside Andre. They are not the only club showing an interest in the Boca Juniors midfielder, however, with European powerhouses AC Milan and Benfica also believed to be in the running.

Fernandez may be relatively unknown to fans who predominantly watch European football, but he is someone who could be such an exciting signing by Liverpool, given his long-term ceiling as a player and the fact that football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him "really interesting".

Fernandez's stats show that he has already become a vital performer for Boca, with 43 appearances coming his way to date, as well as winning 13 caps for Argentina's Under-17s. Mac Allister has even spoken of his admiration for Fernandez recently, saying of him:

"If you ask me a little more about my style, there is a player that I really like and that is Equi Fernández. He is a player who has all the conditions to reach Europe one day and I hope that can happen to him.

"He is a player that I like a lot, he understands the game a lot. He is always prepared to receive the ball, he plays with both legs, he can play as a five, as an inside player… he is a player who has certain very good conditions and, if Brighton asked me, I would say his name."

There is an argument to say that Liverpool don't need both Andre and Fernandez to come in, considering they are similar players in defensive midfield – Endo is also there and Stefan Bajcetic could be seen as a future starter in that position – but if Jurgen Klopp sees Fernandez as a great long-term option, then FSG should pursue a move for him.
