Says that he has always been available for the ODIs in South Africa: “I have not had any communication with the BCCI saying I want to rest”

Newsroom: Clear communication could have made change of guard smoother
Virat Kohli was informed of his removal as India’s ODI captain just one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting to pick the Test squad for South Africa, he said at a press interaction on Wednesday.Kohli also said that there had been no communication from the BCCI over the ODI captaincy between September 16, when he announced his decision to step down from T20I captaincy, and December 8, when the South Africa-bound Test squad was named. At the time, Kohli said his decision to quit as T20I captain just prior to the World Cup was “received well” and termed as “progressive” by the BCCI top brass. His words were in sharp contrast to that of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly’s, which suggested Kohli was asked to reconsider his decision.”I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series,” Kohli said of the communication (or lack of it) with the BCCI on the ODI captaincy. “There was no prior communication to me at all from when I announced the T20I captaincy decision until the eighth (of December) where, as I said, I got a call one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting.”The chief selector [Chetan Sharma] discussed with me the Test team to which we both agreed, and before ending the call I was told that the five selectors have decided that I will not be the ODI captain, to which I replied, ‘okay, fine’. And in the selection call afterwards, we chatted about it briefly. And that’s what happened. There was no communication prior to that at all.”On December 9, Ganguly told that he had requested Kohli to reconsider his decision to step down as T20I captain. Kohli’s clarification seemed as if that wasn’t the case.Related

“When I decided to leave the T20I captaincy and communicated that, and I approached the BCCI first about my decision, that this is my point of view, and these are the reasons due to which I am doing this, it was received in a very nice way,” Kohli said. “There was no offence, no hesitation (from BCCI). I wasn’t told you don’t leave the T20 captaincy. Instead it was received well; I was told it’s a very progressive step and in the right direction.”At the time I told them ‘yes, I’d like to continue (leading) in Tests and ODIs, unless the office-bearers and selectors feel I shouldn’t be doing that responsibility’. Even that I had clarified on the call at the time. My communication to BCCI was clear since then about what I wanted to do. I gave them the option as well, that if the office-bearers and selectors feel I shouldn’t (remain captain in Tests and/or ODIs), then the decision is in their hands.”‘No communication with BCCI to say I want to rest for SA ODIs’ Kohli also confirmed that he was available for the ODIs in South Africa and all talk of him opting out were “lies” and there wasn’t even a suggestion of him skipping the games.”I was and I am available for selection all this time,” Kohli said. “You should not be asking me this question, honestly, this question should be asked to people who are writing about these things and their sources, because as far as I’m concerned, I was always available.”When I decided to leave the T20I captaincy and approached the BCCI about my decision, it was received well”•Getty Images
“I have not had any communication with the BCCI to say that I want to rest. There were a few things that came out in the past as well, that it was said I was attending some events or something which was absolutely not true either. All these people who are writing these things and their sources, to me they’re absolutely not credible.”On Tuesday, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal told Times Now that Kohli would be taking a break. “To my understanding, before any decision was taken with regards to captaincy, it was decided that he (Kohli) will be going (to South Africa) for the Test matches only, not for the ODIs. He was wanting it that way because he needed a break,” Dhumal has said. Kohli, however, categorically stated the opposite.”As I said, I am available for selection for the ODIs in South Africa and I’m always keen to play. This question should be asked to people who are writing about this, writing lies, not to me because my communication with BCCI on this issue has not happened that I want to rest.”Nothing can derail me from being motivated to play for India’ Kohli didn’t shy away from expressing his disappointment with “things that happen on the outside”, but stressed that “nothing can derail me from being motivated to play for India”.”To be prepared for a tour like this and to perform to the best of my abilities, nothing has ever derailed, and nothing can derail me from that,” he said. “A lot of things that happen on the outside are not ideal and not how one expects them to be, but you have to understand there’s only so much that you can do as an individual and we have to keep thing in right perspective and do the things that you can as an individual, (that) are in your control.”I’m very focussed. I’m very mentally prepared, and very excited to go to South Africa and do the best I can for the team and make the team win.”1400GMT The story has been updated with Arun Dhumal’s quotes from Tuesday

The Belgian underdogs had the brighter start to the tie and opened the deadlock after 15 minutes when Chemsdine Talbi found Ferran Jutgla in a good position to lash past goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
Despite their underwhelming first half, Atalanta managed to go in level at the break after Davide Zappacosta crossed to Mario Pasalic to head home in the 41st minute.
The home team did a great job of keeping the Italian side's attacking line quiet for much of the second period, though La Dea managed to create more danger in the later stages, with Juan Cuadrado seeing a powerful shot saved by Simon Mignolet.
For all their smart passing and dangerous runs at the other end, Club Brugge had difficulty with the final ball whenever they went forward.
However, just when a draw seemed certain, the referee blew for a penalty after a challenge from Isak Hien in stoppage time – much to the defender's outrage. Substitute Gustaf Nilsson stepped up to blast in from the spot to secure the win in the 94th minute.

A fantastic finish from ex-Barcelona striker Jutgla put the home team in the ascendancy and he was a lively presence throughout the game. He could have had a second and went on a fantastic run before passing across goal, only to see Atalanta clear the danger. His co-star Talbi was also sublime until his late substitution.
AFPTHE BIG LOSER
It was Hien's horrific pass that Talbi pounced on to create the opening goal and the centre-back made a woeful attempt to stop Jutgla before he fired in. He was a bit hard done by when it came to the penalty, though.

claims that Rodrygo has said no to joining Al-Hilal following a €300 million (£250m/$311m) bid from the Saudi Pro League champions. That is despite an insanely lucrative contract offer worth €140m (£117m/$145m) per season. Real Madrid rejected the world record transfer fee too.

Al-Hilal are seeking a replacement for Neymar following the veteran Brazilian's departure this week. Rodrygo doesn't have the same global profile as team-mates like Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappe, but the 24-year-old has played an equally important part in Real Madrid's successes. His form over the past six weeks has been outstanding, netting four times in his last two Champions League games and racking up eight goals and assists in his five most recent La Liga outings.
WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID
Carlo Ancelotti said on the subject of players fielding offers: "It's hard for me to talk about the future of the players, because they are personal decisions. What I see is that those who are here are very happy and want to stay. What each one thinks individually is difficult. It's hard for me to talk about my future, imagine others. And what I see is that many want to play here, even players that no one imagines."

Real Madrid may not be done when it comes to world record offers from Saudi Arabia. It is rumoured that a similar €300m bid, to join an as yet undecided club, is being prepared for Vinicius Junior ahead of the summer. The 2024 Best FIFA Men's Player will reportedly be offered €1 billion (£836m/$1.04bn) in tax-free wages over five years, or €200m each season, significantly more than the apparent proposal put to Rodrygo.
Wonderkid Lily Murphy inspired Manchester City to derby revenge as they downed Manchester United to claim a Women's League Cup semi-final spot.

After Sunday's damaging defeat to United in the Women's Super League (WSL), City set out on a mission to avenge the loss against their bitter rivals. They started strongly, maintained control, and dictated tempo to heap pressure on United's backline. And in the 12th minute, Murphy gave the Cityzens the breakkthrough. Murphy darted past the full-back and delivered a precise low cross into the box. Laura Coombs was perfectly positioned to meet the ball and clinically finish at the near post, giving goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce no chance.
After City drew first blood, the game slipped to a lower gear as both teams took up a safety-first approach. While City were happy to knock it around, United patiently kept looking to break on the counter. In the 35th minute, their perseverance bore fruit. Melvine Malard floated a cross towards the back post, which found Millie Turner in an advanced position. The centre-back controlled the ball with composure before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner past Khiara Keating to equalise for the Red Devils.
However, United's joy was short-lived as City restored their lead through an electric Murphy, right on the stroke of half-time. The 18-year-old continued to torment Aoife Mannion on the left wing, cutting inside with precision before unleashing a curling effort that struck the far post and nestled into the net.
The second period saw City manage the game effectively, maintaining their lead despite United’s attempts to rally. While the visitors pushed for an equaliser, City’s defensive organisation and midfield control ensured they stayed in command. It was not a classic Manchester derby by any stretch of imagination, thanks to a snooze-fest in the second-half, but Gareth Taylor will not care less as City grabbed the derby bragging rights.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE MVP
It was one peach of a finish from Murphy! The left-winger brushed Mannion aside with little effort and kept her composure before firing a shot past a hapless Tullis-Joyce to score a sensational solo goal for the winner. Not to forget, she was also the provider for City's first goal!
THE BIG LOSER
Mannion has to shoulder the blame for both the goals. For the first, she allowed Murphy to fire in the cross inside the box, and for the second, she put up little resistance to prevent the forward from taking aim at goal. She was simply second best to Murphy and United paid the price.

Journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent has claimed that a Chelsea bid is now possible to sign one surprise Premier League striker, with Al-Ahli reaching agreements for Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Napoli's Victor Osimhen.
Chelsea and Al-Ahli in battle for Toney and Osimhen
The Saudi Pro League side have reportedly agreed moves for both Toney and Osimhen, with the former's potential Middle East switch amounting to around £40 million and the latter's totalling £57 million plus add-ons.
Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea submit bid to sign £60m star in deadline day move
The Blues have lodged an offer.
ByEmilio Galantini Aug 30, 2024
Toney is apparently set to undergo a medical at Al-Ahli after agreeing to join them, despite Chelsea eyeing the England international as an alternative to Osimhen and making an approach for him earlier this week (Sky Sports).
Fabrizio Romano claims that the Saudi side will only sign one of Osimhen or Toney, with the former agreeing personal terms but still hasn't given his definitive 'yes' over joining them, giving hope that Chelsea could still strike a deal for the Nigerian.

"Victor Osimhen has still NOT given the green light to Al Ahli on terms despite club-to-club agreement," said the journalist on X.
"Osimhen, still talking to Chelsea while #CFC delegation in Napoli trying to find a way until the end. Meanwhile, Al Ahli have agreed deal with Toney and Brentford."
It is also unclear as to what will happen with Al Ahli's medical for Toney if the 25-year-old does end up fully accepting a move to the Gulf, with his future up in the air as Chelsea submit their own bid for bid for Osimhen this morning.
Napoli star Victor Osimhen
"The Al-Ahli offer to Osimhen is a €30m salary on a four-year deal," wrote reliable journalist Ben Jacobs on X.
"There are €40m in bonuses on top taking the total package to €160m. Al-Ahli also prepared to sanction a release clause. Osimhen has agreed to terms but is waiting to see whether Chelsea counter. Al-Ahli offer to Napoli has been accepted. It is €68m plus add-ons taking the total package close to €80m."
In the event Chelsea cannot land on either Osimhen or Toney, Delaney writes that they may have an alternative in the Premier League.
Chelsea could make late move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin
As per the reporter, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is that man.
Amid the striker domino involving Al-Ahli, Toney and Osimhen, it is believed a late Chelsea swoop for Calvert-Lewin is "not impossible" if they cannot agree a deal for either of the former two.
The £100,000-per-week forward reportedly commands a £40 million price tag, according to Sky, but perhaps the Toffees could even charge more given the last-minute nature of a move and Chelsea's apparent desperation for a new number nine. The Englishman has scored 68 goals in 249 appearances for Everton in all competitions.

Pre-window done deals
With the window not officially opening until Friday 14th June, some clubs wasted no time adding to their squads. Below is a list of transfers agreed from some time ago, including those that will become effective from the moment the window opens or at the end of players’ contracts.
Note that players being released or retiring have not been included.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Hungary star Szoboszlai was seen in tears after their Nations League clash with the Netherlands was halted due to a medical emergency on the Hungarian bench. Videos appeared to show the team's staff reacting quickly to another person on the bench losing consciousness, and they formed a protective ring as treatment was administered. Medical staff rushed to the stricken individual's aid and the game was paused as they were attended to after seven minutes of the game. It has since been reported Hungary coach Adam Szalai is the individual involved.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Neither team have made any comment on the situation, but Szoboszlai's emotional reaction, and the speed and intensity of the rush to aid the individual, points to a distressing situation. Hungarian Football Xtra, on X, claimed that Szalai was the staff member involved, and they quote MLSZ, a Hungarian news outlet, who say he was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Amsterdam. He is said to be stable.
DID YOU KNOW?
Szalai joined Marco Rossi's coaching staff in October. A former striker, he earned 86 caps for his country.

WHAT NEXT?
Hungary will hope to receive a positive update on Szalai's condition swiftly. Football is ultimately secondary when it comes to matters of life and death.
