Dortmund are through to the Club World Cup knockout stages, but it didn't come easily as they barely survived in 4-3 win against heavy underdogs Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Sundowns were the more assertive side early on, and good value for their lead. Their opener came from a moment of individual brilliance. Lucas Ribeiro turned his man, accelerated through the midfield, and slotted past a stranded Gregor Kobel.

But Dortmund found their way back into a game – if only due to a number of Sundowns errors. Felix Nmecha finished into an empty net after a giveaway from the goalie. The second came in a similar fashion, a poor Sundowns pass leading to a well-constructed Dortmund move and easy header for a wide-open Serhou Guirassy at the far post.

The rest of the game was the Jobe Bellingham show. He scored his side's third on the stroke of half time after a nice piece of skill and angled shot. He then set up the decisive fourth on the hour mark. The Sundowns made a late push, grabbing two goals late, but Dortmund saw it out with relative ease to secure a crucial CWC win.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Bellingham scored his first goal for Dortmund in his first start for the club. It was also the first goal of the calendar year for the 19-year-old, who secured a $34.6 million (€30 million) move from Sunderland earlier this month.

  • THE MVP

It took him a while to get going, but this was eventually Bellingham's game in his first start for the club. He was the best player on the pitch for most of the contest, and involved in the last two goals that ultimately killed the game off for Niko Kovac's side. The comparisons to his older brother won't stop, but the early signs suggest he can carve out his own legacy.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Ronwen Williams did a pretty good job of letting the Sundowns' early lead slip away. The veteran goalkeeper started the Dortmund comeback single-handedly with an errant pass into the feet of a grateful Nmecha. He made things worse soon after with a dangerous ball into the midfield that led to Dortmund's second. A few saves can't be discredited, but he made some decisive mistakes on the day.

Also on Dortmund's end, what is going with Gio Reyna? It makes no sense, at this point, why the attacking midfielder was selected for the CWC squad. Kovac suggested before the tournament that substitutions would be situational, and there may yet be a need for his inclusion. But through two games, there are few signs that the American has a role to play. If only there were another tournament he might have played in this summer…

Shastri wants two left-handers in India's top six for the ODI World Cup

He says India are favourites “if they get the right balance of youth and experience”

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jun-20232:07

Can Samson cement his place in India’s ODI middle-order?

Is India’s ODI top six loaded with too many right-handers at the moment? Former head coach Ravi Shastri seems to think so and would like to see at least two left-handers in India’s top six for the ODI World Cup later this year.”You need to strike the right balance. Do you think a left-hander will make a difference at the top? It does not have to be opening, but in the top three or four. You have to weigh all those options. Ideally, in the top six, I would like to see two left-handers,” Shastri told .With Rishabh Pant not playing any competitive cricket this year due to injuries suffered in a car accident, India have lost a key left-hander in one-day cricket. They have gone with Ishan Kishan for a few games this year. Ravindra Jadeja is another option but he doesn’t have a lot of experience batting in the top six. Yashasvi Jaiswal made it to India’s Test squad for the West Indies series, but his name remained absent from the ODI list.Related

Samson, Gaikwad and Mukesh called up to India ODI squad for West Indies tour

The World Cup is set to start on October 5. Pant, if he gets fit in time, will likely get his place back, but what are the other left-handed options?”You have Ishan Kishan. In the wicketkeeping department, you have Sanju [Samson]. But the left-handers, you have [Yashasvi] Jaiswal, Tilak Varma. There is enough left-handed talent that can replace any senior player at the moment.”Shastri was also adamant that India needed to form a pool of youngsters and get them in the mix ahead of the World Cup. While he voiced concerns about India’s red-ball depth, he was pretty happy with talent coming through in white-ball cricket.”There are so many youngsters. There is Jaiswal and, I might miss out a few here, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera. There is [Sai] Sudharsan, who played so well in the [IPL] final. There is Jitesh Sharma,” he said.”Among the bowlers, there is a crop of young fast bowlers. Quite a few, there is Mukesh [Kumar], names do not come to my mind now. But, there are at least four or five who can be groomed around that 135kmph-140kmph mark. So I am not worried about the talent in white-ball.”You have a lot of injuries these days. I always like a pool of 15-20. You should always be prepared, you should have a plan B, plan C.”Shastri: Sanju Samson is a “match-winner”•BCCI

Another name that Shastri was quite vocal about was Sanju Samson. The Kerala batter has been in and out of the India side but has been included in the squad for the ODIs in the West Indies next month. Shastri likened Samson to a young Rohit Sharma and felt the wicketkeeper-batter could be the “match-winner” India are looking for.”There is Sanju [Samson], who I believe is yet to realise his potential. He is a match-winner. There is something that is missing. I will be disappointed if he does not finish his career all guns blazing. It is like when I was the coach, I would have been disappointed if Rohit Sharma had not played in my side as a regular Test player. Hence, his opening the batting. I feel similar with Sanju,” he said.Shastri felt that with a number of youngsters ready to knock the door down, India should get started on succession planning. “There are seniors ready to be phased out and there are youngsters ready. No question about it when it comes to T20 cricket. Lesser in 50-over cricket and even fewer in Tests,” he said.”Because of the IPL, you see an abundance of high-quality, young, white-ball players. But, one should not get carried away by that and think they should be automatic red-ball choices. No, I would rather see the red-ball record. I would sit with the selectors and find out more about who the [red-ball performances] were against, in what conditions, what are their strengths, what is the temperament of the bloke like.”For me, temperament is key. It is paramount. Does the guy have the stomach for a fight? When it gets hot in the kitchen, is he is ready to bite the bullet? These are qualities I look for in a [Test] player. When I use the word fearless as a coach, these are the qualities that make a fearless cricketer. Backing his own ability and his strengths, and not wavering.”Luckily for India, the volume of players that play the game, compared with other countries, [is high]. I think you should always have a strong bench across formats.”Shastri was confident that India go into the ODI World Cup at home as favourites, and could “win this one” if they got the balance of the side right. “They are playing at home. I think they are one of the favourites. I am telling you now; I think they can win this one. Provided they get the right balance of experience and youth. And there is enough time to identify the squad that you want. And if you get your full-strength side, I think India are favourites, with England and Australia.”

Forget Salah: Slot has made 9/10 Liverpool star a truly "unstoppable" force

Liverpool’s Premier League title charge is turning into a bit of a procession.

Arne Slot’s side proved too much for Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, rocked before the match following an injury to clinical gunman Alexander Isak.

Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister did the job for the high-flying table-toppers, who have now established a 13-point lead over Arsenal, who have a game in hand but ceded further territory following a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.

Alexis Mac Allister celebrates for Liverpool

He didn’t get his name on the scoresheet – a shock to the Merseyside masses, no doubt – but Mohamed Salah was excellent once again, earning another assist in this incredible, once-in-a-generation seasonal effort.

Mohamed Salah's performance vs Newcastle

Salah’s remarkable performances have been the central part of Liverpool’s campaign, with the 32-year-old’s assist against Newcastle taking his overall tally to 30 goals and 22 assists from 39 matches in Slot’s system.

Lewis Hall deserves credit for largely keeping the Egpyt sensation quiet, with Salah only completing one of his 11 attempted dribbles, but as has been the unbreakable theme of the term, he found his moment, the right moment, and threaded a crisp cross-box pass into Mac Allister’s feet, whose finish was strong and true.

That’s 17 assists from 28 Premier League games for Salah, four more away from shredding Thierry Henry’s long-standing record of 20 in a single campaign.

Slot's new "unstoppable" superstar

He’s on fire. Indeed, Szoboszlai is riding a red-hot streak of form, with his second goal in four days hardly telling the full story. “Unstoppable recently” – as says Fabrizio Romano – the Hungarian is coming into his own as the charged lifeforce of Slot’s engine.

Playing a more conventional attacking midfield role after operating in a fluid centre-forward position at the Etihad, Szoboszlai packed a powerful punch and will hunger for the sequel in two-and-a-half weeks, with Newcastle meeting Liverpool again in the Carabao Cup final.

As per Sofascore, he won eight of his ten contested duels, beating off his opponents with ease, while leaping in with five tackles, recovering eight balls (a match-best) and creating two key passes for his teammates in an all-encompassing masterclass.

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates for Liverpool

The Liverpool Echo were bedazzled by the 23-year-old’s effort, handing him a well-earned 9/10 match rating, hailing his unrelenting energy and his commitment in defensive phases.

To have produced such a display only days after exhausting his gas tank and literally collapsing to the turf after putting Man City to the sword, Szoboszlai has become an essential figure in Liverpool’s make-up after ebbing and flowing last season, his first in Liverpool, brought in by Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp built this team, but Slot has refurnished the German’s house with his own vision, and oh how it’s working.

There’s plenty of football still to play. Ten Premier League fixtures remain; Liverpool will look to retain their Carabao Cup title and challenge for Europe’s prized trophy too. Paris Saint-Germain are up next, with the Reds afforded a rest given this coming weekend brings FA Cup action.

Szoboszlai is the man of the moment right now, but the exciting thing about Slot’s Liverpool is so many stars can rise to the occasion, steal the headlines.

It is a team comprised of champions-in-waiting.

Brighton now expected to complete last-minute deal to sign "colossal" ace

Leaving it late to welcome a second January arrival, Brighton & Hove Albion are now reportedly expected to sign a Championship defender after reaching an agreement ahead of Monday’s deadline.

Brighton transfer news

After signing Diego Gomez from Inter Miami, it looked as though the Seagulls were in for a quiet end to the transfer window until rumours sparked their month to life once again.

Before news of any potential incomings arrived, however, it was Karou Mitoma’s name in the headlines having reportedly been the subject of interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, who are preparing a stunning £90m offer as per CBS Sports’ James Benge.

At this stage, it looks as though any such offer will be turned down by those at The Amex with the winger also keen to stay put in Sussex and end any speculation of what would have been one of the most surprising moves of the window.

On the incomings front, meanwhile, the Seagulls looks set to swoop in once more. According to Sky Sports’ Elliot Cook, Brighton are now expected to sign Eiran Cashin from Derby County this month after reaching an agreement with the Rams.

Brighton now in pole position to sign £20m+ star who's spoken to Hurzeler

He’s enjoying a clinical campaign…

The 23-year-old centre-back has impressed at Pride Park and looks set to earn a move into the Premier League as a result this month. It’s there that he should hand Fabian Hurzeler an instant boost in pursuit of turning his side back towards a European place following a recent slump.

So late on in the window, Cashin could yet be Brighton’s final arrival in what has otherwise been a fairly quiet month.

"Colossal" Cashin is on the rise

Still just 23 years old, Cashin is seemingly set to go from League One to the Premier League in the space of three years in senior football, representing quite the rise. In just his second season out of Derby’s academy last year, the defender earned the praise of manager Paul Warne following an impressive performance against Wigan Athletic on his side’s way to promotion.

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Warne told the club’s official website following the 1-0 victory: “It’s difficult to play against Wigan, so I liked how the lads took on the detail. I liked our energy and our confidence on the ball and I liked when called upon we could do the ugly stuff. It would have taken some goal to beat Cash and Nels today as I thought they were colossal at the back.”

It’s the type of form that Cashin has continued in the current campaign to deservedly earn the interest of Brighton ahead of Monday’s deadline, where he could continue to flourish.

It must be said that Cashin would also match up well next to Lewis Dunk, perhaps completing the ugly side of defending whilst the Brighton captain continues his excellent work on the ball.

He left in 2015: Ipswich loan flop is now outscoring both Delap & Lath

As many expected, this season has been a tough one for Ipswich Town.

However, unlike other promoted teams in the past, Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys have put up a serious fight in the majority of their games so far, and while the defeat to Southampton on the weekend was a bitter blow, there is still a genuine chance the club could stay up.

If they manage to beat the drop, then much of that will be down to the sensational efforts of striker extraordinaire Liam Delap, who has far exceeded the expectations of fans and pundits alike this term.

However, even though the Englishman has been talismanic up top, he and Emmanuel Latte Lath, who was heavily touted for a move to Portman Road last month, are being dramatically outscored by a former loan player who left the club in 2015.

Delap and Lath's form this season

Ipswich decided to splash £20m on Delap in the summer, and while there was an element of risk in signing a young striker with minimal Premier League experience, he’s since repaid them in spades.

For example, in just 24 appearances for the side, totalling 1795 minutes, the Winchester-born “super talent,” as dubbed by Danny Mills, has scored nine goals and provided two assists.

That means that in his first full season of top-flight football, the 21-year-old phenom is averaging a goal involvement every 2.18 games, or every 163.18 minutes.

However, given his extreme importance to the team, it wasn’t all that surprising to see the Suffolk side linked with several other number nines during the winter window, including former Middlesbrough ace Lath.

The Ivorian international racked up an impressive tally of 11 goals and three assists in 31 appearances, totalling 1791 minutes, for the Championship side this term, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.21 games, or every 127.92 minutes.

However, instead of remaining in the second tier or moving to Ipswich, the 26-year-old made a surprising move to MLS side Atlanta United for a league-record fee of £17.55m.

While the Anoumabo Marcory-born marksman would have been a valuable addition to the squad, the player McKenna could really do with is a former loanee who’s now outscoring Lath and Delap.

The former Ipswich loanee outscoring Delap and Lath

So, given how well Delap and Lath have been playing this season, the striker who’s outdoing the pair of them would have to be someone quite remarkable, which means it should come as no surprise that the player in question is, of course, Chris Wood.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The New Zealand international joined the Tractor Boys on a short-term loan deal in February 2015 but made just eight appearances and left without a single goal or assist to his name.

Over the next ten years, he’d go on to play for Leeds United, Burnley, Newcastle United and most recently, Nottingham Forest, where, after a slow start, he has since reached stratospheric levels.

The Auckland-born goal-machine initially moved to the City Ground on a short-term loan with an obligation to buy in January 2023 from the Magpies and scored just one goal in seven games.

However, the 33-year-old sharpshooter took a massive step forward the following season and ended up with a brilliant haul of 15 goals and one assist in 35 games, which he’s already bettered this year.

In just 25 appearances for Nuno Espírito Santo’s Tricky Trees, the “outstanding” number nine, as dubbed by Match Of The Day pundit Stephen Warnock, has found the back of the net on 17 occasions and provided two assists to boot and is currently the joint third top goalscorer in the Premier League, alongside Alexander Isak.

It has been a meteoric rise from the 74-capped Kiwi, and with a new contract under his belt, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Neco Williams and Chris Wood

Ultimately, Ipswich have their own incredible marksman in Delap, but we can’t help but imagine that McKenna would love to have Wood in his squad as well.

Perfect O’Reilly alternative: Chelsea pushing to sign "Lavia-esque" talent

The closure of the January transfer window is creeping ever closer and Chelsea still haven’t completed a single first-team acquisition.

This isn’t anything to be worried about, especially with exits taking precedence. Plenty’s still in the pipeline, with Carney Chukwuemeka heading to Borussia Dortmund and Joao Felix likely to leave on loan, AC Milan sitting in the driving seat.

That’s not an exhaustive list, and it’s hardly out of the question that Chelsea will bring a player or two into Enzo Maresca’s squad at the eleventh hour.

Chelsea eyeing last-gasp deal

Chelsea have been looking at a number of positions. Alejandro Garnacho of Manchester United is liked but the variables make a deal tough to complete at this late stage.

Elsewhere, Manchester City prospect Nico O’Reilly has also been of interest, but Chelsea appear to be shifting their attention to across the Channel.

At least, that’s according to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, who have today revealed that Chelsea are keen on signing Saint-Étienne’s Mathis Amougou before tonight’s deadline.

Transfer Focus

Stepping up their efforts to sign the 19-year-old Amougou, the Blues could add the perfect final dimension to their first team and continue the seasonal resurgence.

Journalist Graeme Bailey has gone one step further, claiming that a deal is ‘close’ to being agreed, with it undecided whether the teenager will remain at Stamford Bridge, or head out on loan.

Why Chelsea want Mathis Amougou

Analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed the press-resistant Amougou as a “Romeo Lavia-esque” talent. The key difference is that the Frenchman hasn’t been plagued by injury woes across his fledgling career.

The teenager has started nine Ligue 1 matches this term and has impressed with his blend of abilities, boasting defensive strength and ball-playing qualities. Nascent though they are, this is promising stuff for a Chelsea side already nurturing a rich crop of youth talent.

Lavia and Moises Caicedo impressed in conjunction over the early knockings of the season and Amougou could be a wonderful addition to potentially forge such a partnership down the line, especially with Lavia struggling to maintain his fitness levels.

Amougou would likely be loaned to Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg for the remainder of the 2024/25 term, continuing his development, but this could bear fruit in the long run.

With the versatile O’Reilly also on the radar, BlueCo are patently fighting for a specific profile of midfielder, but Amougou might just be the perfect option, with the aforementioned Mattinson also hailing him as a “ball progression machine” – fine quality for success in Maresca’s system.

With O’Reilly having only made six senior appearances for Manchester City, it’s fair to say that he’s more of an unknown commodity, albeit one of great talent.

But Amougou’s physicality, technique and completeness suggest that he would be the dream signing for Chelsea. If L’Equipe’s report is to be believed, they are ramping up the gas for the French prospect, perfectly illustrating that point.

Tottenham have been in talks to sign another PSG player with Kolo Muani

Tottenham have held talks over signing another Paris Saint-Germain player alongside Randal Kolo Muani, with Ange Postecoglou’s side potentially eyeing a double-raid on the Ligue 1 champions before deadline day on February 3.

Tottenham in negotiations with PSG over January deal for Kolo Muani

Various reports in the last few days have claimed that Spurs are actively attempting to seal a loan deal for Kolo Muani as their second January signing after young goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Levy hopes to finalise Tottenham signing by the end of the week after talks

The Lilywhites chairman and Spurs’ recruitment team are pushing for the club’s second winter signing.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 10, 2025

GiveMeSport reported on Thursday night that chairman Daniel Levy, technical director Johan Lange and the Lilywhites recruitment team are optimistic over striking a full agreement with the French heavyweights in a matter of days, with Tottenham hopeful of finalising a temporary deal for Kolo Muani by Sunday.

Postecoglou’s side are seriously advancing in their pursuit of the France international as they seek to beat Juventus and Man United to his signature, holding talks with both PSG and Kolo Muani’s representatives this week (GMS).

There are still issues to resolve, as PSG prefer that the potential deal includes an obligation-to-buy the 26-year-old outright at the end of the Premier League season, while Spurs would apparently prefer an option (GMS).

On the player’s side, talks over personal terms are believed to be moving forward in a positive way, and Kolo Muani has been assured that he’s guaranteed consistent game time in a well-defined role under Postecoglou (GMS).

The former Eintracht Frankfurt star bagged an incredible 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions during his best club season to date in 2022/2023, highlighting exactly why Spurs are so keen to take advantage of his situation at the Parc des Princes.

That being said, Paris is beginning to become a serious hunting ground for Levy and Lange, as it is now believed that they’ve held negotiations with PSG over signing £264,000-per-week defender Milan Skriniar as well.

Tottenham hold talks over January deal for Milan Skriniar from PSG

The Slovakia international joined Luis Enrique’s side on a free transfer from Inter Milan in 2023, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal, but his time at the club could be coming to an abrupt end.

Journalist Duncan Castles, speaking on The Transfers Podcast (via TBR), claims that Tottenham have held talks over signing Skriniar in January, and PSG will let the centre-back leave, as he’s been deemed surplus by Enrique.

“They’re also been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain about taking Milan Skriniar, who’s another notable player available in this window,” Castles said.

“PSG will let him go. They’ve allowed him to talk to other clubs. Again, not a favourite of Enrique’s. They have interest in him from Serie A clubs, and they are basically going to wait and see who gives them the best offer by the end of the window.

“So that is an option for Tottenham to get someone into their defence, who’s actually a centre back in the centre of their defence.”

The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to N17 for years, and Skriniar was even Jose Mourinho’s top centre-back target for Spurs as far back as 2020 (The Guardian).
