Importance of counties' Zimbabwe tours 'cannot be overstated' – Hamilton Masakadza

Derbyshire and Durham will become the first major English teams to travel to Zimbabwe since 2004 next month, with both sides accepting invitations from Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) to go to the country for pre-season tours.England have not played an international fixture against Zimbabwe since 2007, and ZC’s director of cricket Hamilton Masakadza claimed that the importance of the counties’ pre-season visits “cannot be overemphasised”.ALSO READ: ‘Smaller teams want to play more but the cash isn’t there’ – Alistair CampbellDerbyshire, whose head coach Dave Houghton played 22 Tests and 63 ODIs for Zimbabwe between 1983 and 1997, will play two T20s, two one-day games and two three-day games against a Zimbabwe Select XI, while Durham will play two three-day fixtures against a ZC Chairman’s XI.”Hopefully this tour will open the door for further English county tours in future, which may help Zimbabwe cricket get back on its feet,” Houghton said. “We will be facing some strong opposition during the tour, which will provide ideal preparation for the 2020 season.”We also want to give the players some life experiences because as cricketers, we can become solely focused on the game sometimes and it’s important make the most of these opportunities.”No county team has visited Zimbabwe since Worcestershire in 1997, and Masakadza said that ZC were “thrilled to be hosting Derbyshire and Durham”.”The magnitude and importance of their visit cannot be overemphasised,” he said. “While our players will learn big lessons and gain invaluable experience from playing against such top opposition, we believe this marks the beginning of a new chapter that will hopefully see more English county teams touring Zimbabwe as that will go a long way in preparing our players for the rigours of high-level and international cricket.”Relations between the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe deteriorated significantly during Robert Mugabe’s presidency, primarily due to consistent human rights abuses, leading to several high-profile cricketing disputes. In 2003, England decided to pull out of their scheduled World Cup game in Harare following death threats, though decided to fulfil an ODI series in the country a year later despite opposition from the British government.Michael Vaughan led England’s last tour to Zimbabwe in 2004•AFP via Getty Images

The teams played one another at the World T20 in 2007 but a year later Andy Burnham, the minister for culture, media and sport wrote to the ECB to instruct them to cancel a tour by Zimbabwe to England scheduled for 2009, and Zimbabwe pulled out of the World T20 weeks later after being informed that their players may not be granted visas.Since Mugabe was removed from power following a successful coup in November 2017, relations between the UK and Zimbabwe have improved significantly. The UK’s Africa minister Rory Stewart visited the country soon after Mugabe’s fall from power, with a foreign ministry spokesperson describing relations as “cordial” last month.Whether the tours have any wider significance in paving the way for England to travel to Zimbabwe remains to be seen. The ECB declined to comment on the developments, and there are no fixtures scheduled between the two sides in the current cycle of the Future Tours Programme, which runs until the end of 2023.Zimbabwe will not compete in the T20 World Cup in October, having had their ICC membership suspended due to political inference soon before the qualifying tournament, and the teams were not drawn to play one another in the 2020-22 ODI Super League.Zimbabwe’s players were recently forced to take a pay cut, while several games in the Logan Cup, the domestic first-class competition, were postponed without notice.

The paperwork on show is not official, which means that Reynolds and McElhenney can work the odd joke in for eagle-eagled supporters to spot. The contract supposedly drawn up for new goalkeeper Burton includes three special “duties”. The first of those states that “the player must agree that Deadpool would beat Wolverine in a fight”.

Arsenal’s brilliant form could see 5/10 star lose his pace in the team

Arsenal are absolutely flying at the moment.

Mikel Arteta's side are top of the Premier League thanks to an unbelievable run of victories, and after Tuesday's dramatic win over Porto, they're into the quarter-finals of the Champions League as well.

The north Londoners have been in such brilliant form of late that it's impossible to single one player out, making team selection pretty straightforward for Arteta.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Bar any injuries or players needing a rest, the Spaniard can pick the same XI in the knowledge that they'll perform, which is great for him and the fans, but not for a certain player on the bench who used to be a regular starter.

Why Zinchenko could lose his place in the team

Yes, the player in question is Ukrainian Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The skilful full-back joined the Gunners from Manchester City in July 2022 for just £30m and immediately became an integral part of the side that came agonisingly close to lifting the title last season, making 33 appearances across all competitions.

The 27-year-old's ability to seamlessly invert into the middle of the park and help the Gunners control possession was an essential aspect of how Arteta wanted his team to play, and at that, he is excellent. However, there's a drawback to the Radomyshl-born ace's game, which is his defensive fragilities.

It was a flaw on full display when the Gunners travelled to Anfield last season and this season, as the Reds' equaliser in both games came directly from his mistakes.

Even in his short cameo against Porto, the defensive "liability", as Gary Neville once dubbed him, made several errors that invited more pressure upon the hosts, which led to football.london's Kaya Kaynak awarding him a 5/10 on the night and writing that 'he gave Porto a bit of a chance.'

If this had been last season, a lack of genuine alternatives would have left Zinchenko relatively safe in his position regardless of his suspect defending, but the recent form of one of his teammates and the imminent return of two others have put his place in the XI in real jeopardy.

The players who could replace Zinchenko

So, the first player who looks ready to replace the Ukrainian in the XI is Polish international Jakub Kiwior.

The former Spezia man came into the team during half-time against Liverpool when Zinchenko came off injured and has looked at home ever since.

In the six games he has started since, the 24-year-old has helped keep three clean sheets, provided two assists and scored one goal while looking far more defensively astute than the man he replaced.

If he maintains his form, the Tychy-born star will likely keep his place in the team beyond the game at the Etihad, but Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jurrien Timber could also stake a claim for the position should he falter.

The former has already played 17 games for the Gunners in that position and, like Kiwior, can bring some extra physicality to the role due to being 6 foot 2.

On the other hand, Timber has only played as a left-back ten times in his career. Still, two of those appearances came for Arsenal before he suffered his devastating ACL injury, suggesting that Arteta sees him in that position in the long term.

Ultimately, while Zinchenko does offer the Londoners an extra body in midfield, it would appear as if his defensive failings are becoming increasingly hard to ignore for the manager and as he is already struggling to win back his place from one of his teammates, it could be game over when the other two are back to full fitness.

Barbados Tridents overcome Seekkuge Prasanna assault to make final

The Sri Lankan smashed a 22-ball fifty, but it wasn’t enough to take defending champions Knight Riders home in a chase of 161

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu11-Oct-2019
The last time Barbados Tridents made the CPL final, in 2015, Kieron Pollard was their captain. Four years later, Tridents, led by Jason Holder, toppled Pollard’s Trinbago Knight Riders in front of a raucous Trinidad crowd to set up a final clash with Guyana Amazon Warriors, who have won 11 of their 11 games in CPL 2019 so far.A torrential downpour had delayed the arrival of Tridents’ team bus, a floodlight tower experienced power failure, JP Duminy was forced to retire hurt in the first innings, but Tridents overcame the odds to end Knight Riders’ hopes of a three-peat.ALSO READ – Pollard: A mercenary and a legendAfter helping Tridents loot 43 off their last two overs to finish with 160 for 6, Ashley Nurse took 2 for 14 with the ball to send Knight Riders’ chase spiraling out of control. When Pollard was run out for 23 off 16 balls, the crowd fell silent and Tridents’ owners were celebrating. Knight Riders’ Sri Lankan recruit Seekkuge Prasanna, however, threatened a jailbreak with 22-ball half-century and dragged the chase to the last over.Knight Riders needed 14 off the final over and Prasanna was on a boundary-hitting spree, having launched slower-ball specialist Harry Gurney out of the ground. Left-arm seam-bowling allrounder Raymon Reifer, who had earlier hit an unbeaten 24 off 18 balls, pinned Prasanna in front with a dipping yorker to seal Knight Riders’ fate.Third-time unlucky
Javon Searles drew an outside edge from Johnson Charles with the second ball of the match, but wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin dropped it. Searles then had the opener skying a loft in his second over, but neither Lendl Simmons nor Chris Jordan attempted the catch in the infield and reprieved him again. Charles then managed a mere eight runs off 15 balls from Sunil Narine and Khary Pierre before searching for a release against Ali Khan. Charles ventured another lofted hit, but the USA seamer hit a hard length and had him splicing a catch to mid-off.ALSO READ: Pierre: Trinbago Knight Riders’ master of thriftOh hello, Ashley Nurse!
Before this game, Nurse had last bowled on September 22 in Tridents’ first home match of the season. He hadn’t quite fired with the bat either until Thursday. While other higher-profile names like Alex Hales and Shakib Al Hasan fell cheaply, Nurse punched 24 off nine balls at a strike-rate of 266.66.When Nurse entered to bat, Tridents were 112 for 6 in the 18th over and their coach Phil Simmons confirmed that Duminy would not return to bat because of a “hamstring twinge”.Nurse was up against the Barbados-born Jordan, who had conjured a double-wicket over earlier in the evening. But the onset of dew meant Jordan couldn’t grip the ball and dished out a beamer that was smoked for a six over the bowler’s head. Jordan then attempted a slower ball later in the over, but Nurse manufactured pace for himself and slugged it over midwicket for another six.He cracked another six in the last over of the innings, bowled by Ali Khan, to push Tridents to a competitive total along with Reifer.Seekkuge’s salvo
Narine kickstarted Knight Riders’ chase with four fours off the first over, bowled by Shakib, but was tricked by Gurney’s slower cutter in the third. Lendl Simmons, the second-highest run-getter this season, had a rare failure, chipping a similar slower ball from Jason Holder to mid-on. USA’s legspin-bowling sensation Hayden Walsh Jr. and Nurse then carved up the middle order, leaving Knight Riders at 81 for 5 in the 12th over.

Pollard briefly gave his side hope by muscling Walsh Jr. for a brace of sixes down the ground, but a mix-up with Prasanna four overs later resulted in his dismissal. At this point, Knight Riders still needed 41 off 25 balls. Prasanna then went cray-cray, as did the Knight Riders fans. Guney was dumped onto the roof, and the ball bounced out of the Brian Lara Stadium. Walsh Jr. wasn’t spared either as Prasanna took him for back-to-back sixes. However, Reifer had the final say, ensuring we will have a new champion this season.

Crystal Palace could hire ‘managerial genius’ to end Hodgson nightmare

Despite sitting in 14th place and five points clear of the relegation zone, the wheels have well and truly fallen off at Crystal Palace this season.

Roy Hodgson's Eagles have won just six of their 23 games this season, drawing six and losing the other 11, including some punishing defeats away to Arsenal, Newcastle United, and, worst of all, Brighton & Hove Albion.

Along with having the sixth-worst defence in the league, the south Londoners also have the third-worst attack, and with star players Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze set for spells on the sidelines, the immediate future's not looking bright.

All of these things combined have left fans feeling understandably frustrated, a frustration that has made Hodgson's role untenable, and it's now a matter of when and not if Steve Parish and Co give him the sack.

Palace's managerial search

It was reported earlier this week that the club seriously contemplated firing Hodgson in the aftermath of their embarrassing derby defeat to the Seagulls on Saturday, but stopped short of pulling the trigger due to the trouble they are having securing a replacement.

A number of managers have been touted for the role, such as Steve Cooper, former Manchester United midfielder and now Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick and even former Wolverhampton Wanderers, Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui.

However, while all three of the aforementioned managers would likely improve things at the club, the best option might be the up-and-coming Kieran McKenna, who has been linked to the club several times over the last few months.

The Northern Irishman has done an unbelievable job for Championship club Ipswich Town, taking them from a middling League One side to one fighting for promotion to the Premier League.

While getting him through the door might be challenging, the allure of managing an established top-flight team with a significant fanbase might be too tempting to turn down.

How McKenna compares to Hodgson

McKenna has a slightly different background to most high-profile coaches as a severe hip injury early on in his career forced him into retirement at 22 years old before he could make his senior debut for Tottenham Hotspur, the side he spent most of his youth career with.

Upon hanging up his boots, he started to coach in the team's academy before taking the reins of the U18 side in 2015 and then taking charge of Manchester United's U18 a year later.

Two years after that, he was offered an assistant coach role by José Mourinho – which he kept following the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – before finally managing a team of his own when he joined Ipswich in December 2021.

Since taking the job with the Tractor Boys, McKenna has won promotion to the Championship with an unreal points haul of 98 and is currently just two points off the automatic promotion places in the Championship, with a game in hand.

With his record and personal story, it's easy to see why sports reporter John Chubb labelled the 37-year-old a "managerial genius", but how does his recent record compare to Hodgson's?

Well, in McKenna's spell with Ipswich, he has managed 114 games, won 65, drawn 31, lost 18 and averaged 1.98 points per match, whereas Hodgson has managed Palace for 37 games in this recent spell, winning just 12, drawing ten, losing 15 and averaging just 1.24 points per match.

It's quite clear, then, that while the Palace boss has an endless amount of experience and knowledge he can call upon, he simply hasn't been good enough for the Eagles this season.

While McKenna might still be a little green in terms of first-team management, his track record speaks for itself and would surely get the south Londoners firing again.

Despite her arduous setbacks – she says she had to "grieve" after missing the opportunity to play at the World Cup – Press insists that the past six months have been positive, as she has undergone what some would call post-traumatic growth.

WHAT PRESS SAID

Press told The Athletic: “Before, you called me a diva, and now I’m delightful. It’s not going to be like that; that’s not what life is. But I will say, the last year of my life — maybe even shorter, the last six months — have been the best of my life because of the space that my ACL created for me to heal as a human. I’m still on that journey, and I intend to stay on that journey.”

She added: “Getting that role in the team where I can be happy and joyful and chasing excellence, really appreciating what I’m doing and what I’m able to do.

“Because if I go back, and I go back and feel the same way that I did about soccer and winning and scoring, then that will feel like a bigger failure than not making it back at all.”

Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine blow away sluggish Rajasthan Royals

Royals made the worst ever IPL total for the loss of three or fewer wickets, and when KKR’s openers walloped 65 in the Powerplay, the result was a foregone conclusion

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando07-Apr-20192:09

Manjrekar: Gurney a long-term seam solution for KKR

Rajasthan Royals paid the price for a turgid innings, on what Kolkata Knight Riders proved was a very good batting track. Despite losing only three wickets, and having had a second-wicket partnership worth 72, Royals mustered only 139 for 3 in their 20 overs. No team in IPL history has made a poorer score for the loss of three wickets or less.Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes just could not get going in this match. They faced 34 and 14 balls respectively, but neither could strike at more than 110. Only Steven Smith managed a half-decent ouput, scoring 73 not out off 59 deliveries. Even that is not exactly a stellar innings, though. In response, Knight Riders were brutal. Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn blazed through the opening overs, hitting 65 off the Powerplay for no loss. Narine had 47 off 25 balls when he was dismissed, but with the score at 91 in the ninth over, the result was almost a foregone conclusion. Lynn hit 50 off 32, and was the other batsman to be dismissed in Knight Riders’ chase. Robin Uthappa eased the team to victory with a 26 not out off 16 balls. They had a whopping 37 balls remaining when a wide from Stokes sealed the result.Knight Riders’ misersA third of he deliveries Sunil Narine delivered were dot balls. Piyush Chawla was even better – 13 of his 24 balls were dots. It is not as if Royals did not venture big shots off them. These bowlers were just too good, beating the Royals top order in the air as well as off the pitch. Harry Gurney was outstanding in his first IPL match this season as well, conceding only three from the 16th over, and only eight from the 20th, despite giving away a four to Steven Smith.Smith’s slow startAlthough Smith would eventually muster 73 off 59, his batting in the early overs was perhaps more suited to ODIs than T20s. He was on 39 off 40 at one stage, for example, despite never appearing to be in any particular discomfort at the crease. Smith was a little more adventurous in the last six overs of the innings. But more risks earlier on from a set batsman might have set Royals on track to a competitive score.Royals’ modest finishSmith made 34 off the last 19 balls, but despite the fact that Royals had lost only two wickets going into the death, there was a woeful lack of intent at the other end. Looking back on that finish, it seems likely that Royals misread the pitch, and believed a low score to be defendable.Ben Stokes, for example, took a few deliveries to play himself in, rather than attempting boundaries from the outset. When he did later try to go big, the Knight Riders bowlers outwitted him, restricting him to a sorry 7 off 14 balls. Rahul Tripathi fared little better. His 6 came off 8 balls, before Gurney had him caught. The rocking Knight Riders’ standTripathi had one more regretful moment in the game – when he dropped Sunil Narine for 23 in the fourth over, allowing the Knight Riders opener to continue lavishly swinging his bat. Next ball, Dhawal Kulkarni grazed Chris Lynn’s leg stump, but although the bails lit up, they did not dislodge, and the batsman was free to continue. The Knight Riders openers rode those gigantic slices of luck to a match-winning opening stand. Narine was the more aggressive of the two, hitting 47 off 25 at a strike rate of 188, hitting three sixes. Lynn was hot on his heels, making 50 off 32 in the end, launching three sixes himself. When Narine was eventually caught at slip off the bowling of Shreyas Gopal in the ninth over, Knight Riders only needed 49 off 69 balls to win. In the end it was a cakewalk.
