"Go" – TalkSPORT pundit tells Ange’s "reliable" Spurs man to quit Tottenham

One "reliable" Tottenham Hotspur player has been told that he must leave Spurs when he can in 2024, despite manager Ange Postecoglou seemingly rejuvenating the north London club.

Tottenham form under Ange Postecoglou

Spurs have won six out of a possible eight league games under Postecoglou so far, remaining unbeaten in that time. The only blemish on his record is a second-round EFL Cup defeat to Fulham on penalties, but given they're currently top of the Premier League, supporters most likely won't care about that. Certain members of the Spurs squad are also enjoying a new lease of life with Postecoglou, after being outcasted under former boss Antonio Conte last season.

Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, who barely got a look-in over 2022/2023, are now thriving as two sole members of Postecoglou's dual midfield pivot in front of the back four. Speaking of their defence, both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero have become a huge part of Tottenham's early-season success. Summer signing van de Ven looks like one of the bargains of the summer from Wolfsburg, while Romero has matured and ironed out the rashness in his game.

The likes of James Maddison, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are excelling further forward, especially the former two, who've bagged eight goals and five assists between them in the league so far.

Who is leaving Tottenham?

While the aforementioned dazzle as members of Postecoglou's largely unchanged starting elevens, week in and week out, there are some unfortunate casualties of Tottenham's recent form. Indeed, the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier have found themselves on the periphery of Spurs' line-ups so far. Hojbjerg has been linked with a move to Juventus in January, while Dier is being tipped to see out the remainder of his contract and leave on a free deal next year.

The latter player, who was a mainstay last season, was praised as a "reliable player" with great potential to become a top defender. That is according to Conte, who once said to the press:

"What I can tell you is that Eric has improved a lot since I arrived. We are talking about a reliable player, 100 per cent focused in every game. He is not a player who alternates with a big performance then a drop. He is providing great continuity in his role and playing every game. I can also tell you he is a really good guy, with great will, desire to work and improve. He knows he has space for improvement and I see every day in his eyes the desire to become stronger, to become a top defender."

There is clearly a player there who is unfavoured by Postecoglou, so perhaps his best course of action is to find a way out as soon as possible. That sentiment is echoed by talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy this week [11 October, 12.50pm), who told the broadcaster on live radio:

“He [Dier] has got himself in a situation. Obviously, with a change in manger, sometimes you find yourself out of favour, and you’ve got to cut your ties, you’ve got to go.”

T20 may become cricket's only format – Buttler

Jos Buttler, England’s limited-overs wicketkeeper, has suggested that T20 could kill off all other forms of cricket within the near future. Buttler said that while he still viewed Test cricket as “the pinnacle”, he could see a time – in “15 to 20 years” or sooner – in which T20 dominated. His comments are likely to fuel fears that 20-over cricket, which has only been played professionally for 15 years, will eventually eclipse the more traditional formats.”I feel cricket could become a one-format game in the future – whether that’s soon or in 15 to 20 years,” Buttler told . “Test cricket is still, for me, the pinnacle of cricket but T20 fills out stadiums and is easy to keep up with and follow. Everyone wants things faster these days and things evolve so maybe Twenty20 could have a monopoly on cricket.”We all love the history of Test cricket – you will never have situations thrown up in T20 that Test cricket can do to you and you will never be tested as a player as you would in Test cricket. It’s a complete test of everything and it would be sad [if it disappeared], but as a product T20 is going from strength to strength.”Buttler has played 18 Tests, the last of which was as a specialist batsman on the 2016-17 tour of India, but was not selected for the Ashes tour party with Ben Foakes preferred as Jonny Bairstow’s deputy in Australia.Instead, Buttler plied his trade as a T20 globe-trotter, appearing in the Bangladesh Premier League and then the Big Bash League. In April, he will return to India for a third season in the IPL and he conceded that he is likely to put T20 opportunities ahead of furthering his Test chances by playing more first-class cricket. The softening of England’s stance towards the IPL saw several players bought for hefty amounts during last month’s auction – Ben Stokes commanded a fee of £1.37m from Rajasthan Royals, who also signed Buttler for £480,000 – and the financial rewards on offer in T20 are unmatched in other forms of the game.”Hopefully the administrators can find a way of making the Test game more popular – it’s awesome and I’d love to be playing in it,” Buttler said ahead of England’s T20 against New Zealand in Wellington, when he is again set to captain the side in Eoin Morgan’s absence.”[Not making the Ashes squad] was a wake-up call that I have slipped down the ladder in red-ball cricket and white-ball cricket is obviously my strength. I thought if I’m serious about playing red-ball cricket I could give up the white-ball stuff for two years and spend winters playing red ball, but I feel like there are too many opportunities to go down that route.”

Strikers hold nerve to set up title bout at home

Ben Laughlin defended three off the last ball against Kieron Pollard as Adelaide Strikers made it to their first ever BBL final

The Report by Alex Malcolm02-Feb-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJake Weatherald sweeps the ball fine•Getty ImagesConfirmation of the BBL final’s host hung on one delivery. A swing and a miss from Kieron Pollard made Ben Laughlin a hero and delivered Adelaide Strikers their first BBL final berth, while the Melbourne Renegades were denied a chance at a title. Strikers will host Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday at Adelaide Oval, with both sides chasing their first BBL trophy. The game was on a knife’s edge all through the Renegades run chase. Laughlin was asked to keep the Renegades to 12 runs or less in the final over. He gave up 10 off the first five balls including a boundary from Pollard. With three to win off the final delivery Pollard missed a length ball in the slot and a bye wasn’t enough.Strikers’ tried and tested set-and-defend formula worked again. Travis Head cast aside his disappointment of being dropped from Australia’s T20 International side to play a match-winning hand. His unbeaten 85 was pivotal to the Strikers’ imposing total. Jake Weatherald provided superb support.Renegades had looked on track the whole way after a brisk start from Marcus Harris and Tim Ludeman. Tom Cooper and Kieron Pollard appeared set to finish the job but they couldn’t.Dashing DeanThe loss of Alex Carey at the top of the order seemed an impossible hole to fill. Jono Dean couldn’t provide the volume of runs that Carey had but he could provide something different. Carey had been a slow starter in the Powerplay and preferred to accelerate once set.Renegades had hoped to sneak in an over of Cooper’s offspin early to get the Strikers behind the eight-ball. Dean did not allow it. He smashed 13 from the first over and then hit Chris Tremain over the rope off the seventh ball of the innings. He holed out off the eighth. But the rapid start gave Weatherald and Head the chance to settle in. Weatherald was able to do as Carey had done. He was striking at less than run-a-ball, before launching Cooper in the 10th over. He scored 33 runs off his next 16 balls to take the pressure off Head. Their partnership of 104 looked set to blow the game apart.Holland a specialist fielderJon Holland took the catch to remove Weatherald. It was his only contribution for the night. He wasn’t used with the ball despite being selected as Renegades’ only specialist spinner, presumably because he wasn’t the right match-up for the two left-handers that batted deep into the innings. The rate slowed briefly as Colin Ingram and Jonathan Wells came and went. Ingram fell to a stunning one-hander from Tim Ludeman. But Head found a way to accelerate despite losing partners. He only hit one four and one six in the last five overs but ran eight twos to get the total up to 178.Bizarre PowerplayStrikers have buried opponents in the Powerplay when defending totals. But without Billy Stanlake, Renegades bolted out of the blocks in spite of making some bizarre decisions themselves. The top three of Marcus Harris, Matthew Short and Tom Cooper from the last few fixtures was abandoned. Cameron White, who batted at No. 3 with great success before leaving for international duty, opened with Harris and Ludeman batted one-down for the first time in the tournament, while Short was not selected. White holed out early. But Harris continued his fine form and Ludeman cut loose. The key moment came when Rashid Khan was forced to bowl an over in the Powerplay and Renegades took 12 runs from it. The Renegades Powerplay of 1 for 64 was their best in the tournament, and the Strikers’ worst.Nervous Lehmann, nerveless LaughlinHead and Rashid got their own back, removing Harris and Ludeman off consecutive overs. But Renegades needed just 87 runs from the last 60 balls with seven wickets in hand. Cooper and Dwayne Bravo reduced that to 52 from 36 with some cool and calculated batting. The game then appeared to slip through the Strikers’ fingers.Head turned boldly to the part-time legspin of Ingram. He forced a mistake from Bravo, who skied one to long-on, but Lehmann spilled the relatively simple chance running in. Bravo launched the next ball for six over cover. Laughlin removed Bravo and conceded just five runs in the 16th over. Head gambled with Ingram again to Pollard. Again, he forced a skied ball to long-on. Lehmann ran in glancing at midwicket, hoping someone would call him out of the catch. No call came. When he looked back up he realised he had over-run and it fell untouched. The next ball didn’t go for six, but Pollard launched Rashid over the longest boundary next over. The Renegades needed 20 runs from 12 balls with Pollard and Cooper set. But where Head had run twos on mis-hits during his batting innings, Pollard strolled ones. Michael Neser gave up just seven runs in the 19th over to give Laughlin a chance. Despite one incredible strike down the ground and some luck on the final ball, Laughlin held his nerve to get his side home.

Forest Could Sign £9m-rated "Legend" As A Turner Upgrade

Nottingham Forest continue to search for a new goalkeeper, yet a fresh name has emerged that could actually surpass their current top target…

How much would Kasper Schmeichel cost?

Whilst much of the window has seen Steve Cooper linked to Dean Henderson yet again, questions did arise regarding the legitimacy of their desire to re-sign the Manchester United ace.

Therefore, the rumour mill moved on to Arsenal's Matt Turner, who David Ornstein recently suggested has now reached an agreement to make the switch from the Emirates to the City Ground.

Despite that, Eurosport remains insistent that the Midlands outfit remain in concrete talks to instead sign Kasper Schmeichel, returning the Danish shot-stopper to the Premier League just one year after he traded Leicester City for OGC Nice.

Despite his age, Football Transfers value the 36-year-old at an admirable €10m (£9m). He still has two years left on his contract with the French club.

How good is Kasper Schmeichel?

Despite leaving England, the ageing ace has not seen his powers wane as he departed the best league in the world. In fact, France has played host to one of his finest years in recent memory, showcasing that he is still as sharp as ever, and able to offer something back in the place where he spent the bulk of his career.

Whilst his time in England is best known for his 11-year spell with the Foxes, it is worth noting just how instantly influential he has been for Les Aiglons before going over his stunning career.

Just last season saw him maintain a 7.01 average rating in Ligue 1, the highest top-flight league rating of his career funnily enough. This was a figure buoyed largely by the 11 clean sheets he kept, as the Denmark international mustered three saves per game at a 75% success rate, via Sofascore.

Throughout his fine career, he has also been widely lauded for his ability with his feet, and his recent 75% pass accuracy serves to support this.

matt-turner-aaron-ramsdale

There is no doubt that he could come in and instantly improve Cooper's side, both in terms of leadership and experience as well as quality. Schmeichel featured 479 times for Forest's east Midlands rivals, and helped them win arguably the most unlikely Premier League title of all time, alongside a subsequent FA Cup. It was no surprise to see him branded "a proper Leicester City legend" by journalist Saddick Adams, which is a claim that could be under threat should he make such a switch.

It could even be argued that he would represent a finer option than Turner, despite the USA international boasting seven years of youth on his potential alternative.

The 29-year-old has found himself as a consistent backup for Aaron Ramsdale over the last year, struggling to displace the England international. As such, he made just seven appearances across the campaign, with his only experience coming in his homeland. He did shine there though, posting a 7.04 average rating of his own during the 2022 MLS term.

However, that was with just five clean sheets, conceding 37 goals in just 29 games, while Gunners legend Martin Keown suggested that he "can't really trust" the American, following the Europa League, last-16 first leg draw with Sporting CP.

Meanwhile, Schmeichel would bring far more know-how for the division, along with a talent level more than capable of surpassing Turner. He marks the smarter option across the board and could end up being sensational competition for the Gunners' backup keeper.

Everton Could Decide To Sign 25-Year-Old Striker On Loan

Everton have been linked with a summer move for Udinese striker Beto numerous times in recent weeks, and a fresh update has now emerged regarding his possible switch to England.

What's happening with Beto?

It has become abundantly clear that the Blues are crying out for attacking additions in the current transfer window, having looked light in that area of the pitch for far too long, not helped by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ongoing injuries problems.

That was perfectly highlighted on Saturday afteroon, as Sean Dyche's side suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Fulham in their opening Premier League game of the season. That's not to say that they didn't play well, however, and they were instead guilty of missing some huge chances, especially the struggling Neal Maupay.

Read the latest Everton transfer news HERE…

One player who has emerged as one of the favourites to join Everton before the end of the month is Beto, who has become a key man for Udinese, scoring 22 goals in 64 appearances for the Serie A side.

Now, another update has dropped regarding the Blues' potential move for the 25-year-old – one that suggests there is still plenty of life in the saga before the summer is out.

Udinese striker Beto

According to Il Messaggero Veneto [via Sport Witness], Everton are still "thinking" about making a move for Beto before deadline day arrives, seeing him as a strong option to bring in. Instead of signing him permanently though, the Merseysiders are thought to be considering a loan move for the Portuguese giant, with a viewing to signing him for good for £22m next summer.

In a separate update, Rai claim that there is "still time left" for the Blues to get a deal over the line for the Udinese marksman, although they they believe their valuation is less than what his club want for him, hinting that a permanent switch is the preferred outcome.

Is Beto good?

While Youssef Chermiti has already arrived at Goodison in recent times, bolstering Dyche's attacking options, more faces are needed to truly make a difference in the final third this season and beyond.

In Beto, Everton could have a tailor-made option to come in and be an immediate key player, possessing the physical attributes to be a real handful, having been compared to former Blues striker Romelu Lukaku in the past and standing at 6 foot 4. He has also been spoken of fondly to his face by legendary superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

His aforementioned record for Udinese is an impressive one – a record of 21 goals in 61 Serie A games is strong, considering he is not playing for top club and is in one of Europe's toughest leagues – and a loan move could actually make the most sense, giving Everton a little more leeway if he ends up struggling in his first season at the club.

Either way, it is absolutely paramount that the Blues continue working hard on getting attacking business over the line as soon as possible, with Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto another potential addition, as well as Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike.

Crystal Palace: "Real beast" would be "great" signing for Hodgson

Crystal Palace are keen on Montpellier striker Elye Wahi and he could be a 'great' forward option at Selhurst Park, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Which clubs are keen on Elye Wahi?

According to L'Equipe via Sport Witness, Crystal Palace are believed to have made a 'verbal offer' to try and land Wahi this summer alongside Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea are also keen on the 20-year-old forward and it is said that he is hoping to link up with his new club and start training once he returns from his holiday.

Cited by The Evening Standard, Chelsea have already saw a £24 million bid for Wahi turned down this window and is reportedly keen on a move that would see him pitch up at Strasbourg upon arrival at Stamford Bridge to continue his development at the Blues' satellite club.

Wahi, who has been hailed as a "real beast", isn't yet regarded as ready to lead the line for Chelsea; however, he enjoyed a fantastic campaign last term, notching 19 goals and six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions for Montpellier, as per Transfermarkt.

West Ham United have emerged as another suitor in the race for Wahi and would be willing to launch an attempt to bring him to the London Stadium as a potential replacement for veteran striker Michail Antonio, according to 90min.

Speaking to Football FanCast, transfer insider Jones thinks that although Crystal Palace may find it difficult to sign Wahi this summer, there is no doubt that he would be a 'great' attacking option to have at Selhurst Park.

Jones stated: "It would not be easy for a club like Palace to win the race for Wahi because he’s already got clubs like Chelsea bidding for him but if a situation was to arise where he was attainable then he would be great for them. He has such an eye for goal and also still has the hunger to make the most of every step up he makes in terms of level."

What now for Crystal Palace?

As per BBC Sport, Crystal Palace are set to sign Flamengo wonderkid Matheus Franca for a fee in the region of £26 million and he will help to fill the void left by club legend Wilfried Zaha, who is now plying his trade for Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Franca will join Jefferson Lerma at Selhurst Park as Roy Hodgson's second summer signing. At the same time, youngster Chris Francis has joined the Eagles on a free transfer from Bournemouth and will link up with their elite development squad.

Nevertheless, The Athletic report that Manchester City are keen on Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise and indicate that it may be difficult for Hodgson to keep the France youth international in south London.

Crystal Palace are likely to initiate further incomings over the final month of the window and Leeds United pair Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville are both on their radar to strengthen the flanks, according to Football Insider.

Marc Guehi is a player that Crystal Palace are 'desperate' to keep around for the new campaign, though Chelsea are keen to bring in the England international to provide cover for injured central defender Wesley Fofana at Stamford Bridge.

Alasdair Gold Drops Hint Over Spurs Defensive Signings

Tottenham Hotspur could sign a "few" defenders this summer if they can shift more of their current players "out the door than they kind of expected" this summer, per journalist Alasdair Gold.

Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing in the transfer window?

It's hard to deny that, thus far, Tottenham have had an excellent transfer window.

The club have undoubtedly improved their starting eleven with the signings of James Maddison from Leicester City and Guglielmo Vicario from Serie A side Empoli.

Alongside those two, they have added strong squad depth with the recent signing of Israeli international Manor Solomon from the Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

Yet, there is one major hole in their business so far, a mark against it, the lack of defensive signings.

Outside of the ever-reliable Harry Kane, Spurs were utterly underwhelming in the Premier League last year as they limped over the line to finish eighth, missing out on European football for the first time since 2009/10.

While the team was generally dysfunctional, the biggest issue was, without a doubt, the defence, as the side conceded a staggering 63 goals across their 38 league games, making a new centre-back, or two, an essential part of the team's summer business.

So far, the two names most heavily linked with a move to N17 are Dutch international Micky van de Ven and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.

The former had a brilliant season with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg last year and, according to Football Insider, has already agreed personal terms with the Lilywhites, but with the German side demanding £30m and Daniel Levy unwilling to offer more than £25m, an agreement is yet to be reached.

Tapsoba, on the other hand, would reportedly cost even more, at around €40m (£34m), per SportBILD (viaSport Witness).

With the way Spurs have operated over the past few transfer windows, it's hard to see them signing both players after they already splashed the cash earlier in the summer, but if they can shift a few more of their unwanted players, signing two defenders becomes a lot more plausible, per journalist Alasdair Gold.

edmond-tapsoba-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-postecoglou-bayer-leverkusen-levy

He explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"The idea was always to have one on the tour. Whether that means they would have linked up later or not, I don't know. They've got to make that decision now between Van De Ven. Tapsoba, Adarabioyo, and Lenglet.

"It may well be that if they can get more defenders out of the door than they kind of expected they'd be able to, maybe you see a few of those going."

Who is leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer?

Perhaps the most prominent name that will leave N17 this summer, should Kane stay, is club captain and World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The Frenchman has been at the club for 11 years at this point and has undoubtedly earned his spot among the other modern Tottenham greats in the Premier League era, but after a poor year between the sticks, he looks to be on the way out.

Tottenham's Hugo Lloris

According to Record Sport, he could return to France, as Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain are said to be interested in him. However, the move could be scuppered as the publication report that Levy will ask for a fee, despite the keeper hoping he'd be allowed to leave on a free.

Whoever comes and goes this summer, it's starting to look like Ange Postecoglou will have a very different squad to work with come the start of the season next month.

Liverpool Can Complete Their Midfield With £26m Transfer

Liverpool endured a difficult 2022/23 campaign as they failed to qualify for the Champions League after a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.

The Reds will be competing in the Europa League next season but that has not stopped them from making a splash in the summer transfer window so far.

FSG signed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion for a fee that could rise to £55m before they completed a deal to bring Dominik Szoboszlai in from RB Leipzig for a price tag of £60m.

They are both attack-minded midfielders who have the quality to score and create goals for the team next season, based on their performances for their respective clubs last term.

The Argentina international plundered ten Premier League goals during the 2022/23 campaign, while the Hungarian produced six goals along with eight assists in the Bundesliga.

FSG could now complete Jurgen Klopp's new-look midfield by securing the signing of Fiorentina enforcer Sofyan Amrabat, who could sit behind Mac Allister and Szoboszlai to allow them to thrive in possession.

What is Sofyan Amrabat's style of play?

The Morocco international, who has been described as "criminally underrated" by journalist Muhammad Butt, is a defensive midfielder by trade and excels at winning possession back for his side whilst also being exceptional at progressing play from a deep position.

Amrabat, who is a reported transfer target for the Reds, would be perfect to play in the number six role behind two creative midfielders, like the club's two summer signings so far, due to his ability to screen in front of the defence.

As you can see in the graphic below, as provided by Opta, the 26-year-old maestro is among the best in his position at regaining the ball, whilst he also ranks highly with regard to touches which suggests that the talented midfielder would thrive as part of a possession-based team.

The latter point is backed up by his rank among the top 8% of midfielders across the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days for progressive passes made per 90 (7.93). Current Liverpool enforcer Fabinho, for context, sits in the 59th percentile with 5.34 per 90.

Sofyan Amrabat's 2022/23 Fiorentina statistics.

This suggests that Amrabat would offer more progression from a defensive midfield position in comparison to the Brazil international. He would, therefore, get the ball into the likes of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in advanced areas of the pitch more frequently, which could lead to more dangerous attacks for the Reds.

The Serie A star also showcased his strength in the middle of the park with 2.3 tackles per game at the World Cup for his country in 2022, a number only Thiago Alcantara (2.4) bettered for Liverpool during the Premier League season.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

Fiorentina are reportedly demanding €30m (£26m) for the impressive battler, who was once dubbed a "monster" by journalist Carlo Garganese, and FSG must match that figure to complete Klopp's midfield.

The German head coach would have a tough-tackling number six who can receive the ball from the defence before progressing the play to Mac Allister and Szoboszlai in positions from which they can do their damage in the final third.
