Arsenal’s £110k "monster" is already their own version of Zubimendi

The date is January 31st 2023. It doesn’t feel like a poignant day in Arsenal’s history. That’s because it wasn’t. But for one player, it was a landmark occasion.

Indeed, it’s the date Jorginho joined Arsenal, moving from cross-city rivals Chelsea for a measly fee of £12m.

Considering Mikel Arteta had initially missed out on Moises Caicedo, this felt like an attempt to cover their backs.

Later that year, the Gunners would miss out on Caicedo again. Declan Rice, at a mighty £105m, was the preferred option.

Coincidentally, Caicedo filled the void Jorginho left behind at Stamford Bridge, albeit for £115m. Their stories since couldn’t be further apart.

Indeed, hours after Chelsea had been dispatched on their own patch, 4-2 by Wolves, Jorginho and Co were marching towards a 3-1 victory over title rivals Liverpool.

It could well be a poignant moment in the quest for league glory, with Arteta’s side closing the gap to Sunday’s opposition to two points.

All of that came after a transfer window in which Arsenal didn’t spend a penny. Nor did Liverpool in all fairness, but there could well be a war chest to spend in the summer.

A striker is required, with Ivan Toney reportedly the chief target, and a midfielder too; Martin Zubimendi.

Arsenal want Zubimendi in the summer

Reports during January suggested that Arsenal were interested in procuring the signature of Zubimendi in the summer.

Those claims have since been backed up prior to the winter window closing last Thursday.

Ryan Taylor of the Express has suggested that the Real Sociedad star tops the club’s summer wish list, although Edu and his transfer team will need to fight away interest from German giants Bayern Munich.

It’s been noted in the play that the player has a release clause of £53m but there is a sense that money such as that would be better spent on a new centre forward.

After all, the aforementioned Toney has had an £80m valuation slapped on his head and another target in Victor Osimhen could cost upwards of £120m.

Martin Zubimendi.

Why is this all relevant after Arsenal’s win over Liverpool, though? Well, because of Jorginho, of course.

How Jorginho compares to Zubimendi

The Italian was hardly a celebrated arrival when he joined the club a year ago but he has quickly become a much loved figure at the Emirates Stadium.

He proved exactly why on Sunday afternoon with a man of the match display that showcased to his manager that Arsenal already have their own version of Zubimendi.

Indeed, analyst Ben Mattinson asked us at full-time to envisage the idea of the Spanish midfielder lining up alongside Rice, suggesting he could well be an ‘upgraded version’ of the 32-year-old.

The pair both bring a calming presence to proceedings. They’re not a tackling machine like Manchester City’s Rodri, nor are they a box to box midfielder like a certain Granit Xhaka was last term.

Instead their job is to sit and protect. Look at the table; they’re rarely active in the final third but boast high totals for pass success, as well as tackles and interceptions.

Evidently their role is to recycle the play, to break it up and to make those around them look better. Described as a "mental monster" by Dr Rajpal Brar – a notable character on social media – £110k-per-week Jorginho did that to some aplomb against Liverpool, boasting the most touches of anyone in Arsenal red.

It was a total performance from the Italy international and one that Rice certainly lapped up.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the former West Ham star said: “Before I signed for Arsenal, the prospect of playing with him (Jorginho), [Thomas] Partey – Playing against them before, knowing how he controls games. I think he’s got qualities that not a lot of midfielders have.”

Well, if he enjoys a game playing in a double pivot with Jorginho, he’d certainly enjoy Zubimendi’s presence.

For now, Arsenal will be content with their classy veteran midfielder but in time they will need someone with fresher legs. When that time does occur, the 25-year-old Jorginho clone at Sociedad will be a superb replacement.

Bumrah, Rohit and Chahal give India winning start

Meanwhile, South Africa slumped to their third straight loss in the World Cup

The Report by Alagappan Muthu05-Jun-2019
As it happenedWhoooooooosh. That’s the sound of ball beating bat. South Africa were not in control of nine of the first 12 balls that Jasprit Bumrah bowled.Crrrraaaccckkkkkk.That’s the sound of ball hitting bat. And breaking it. Kagiso Rabada made sure the entire world could hear it. But outside of that match-up, South Africa really had nothing to offer India. They’d lost Dale Steyn. They don’t know when Lungi Ngidi will be fit again. And they can’t ask AB de Villiers to come back. Meanwhile, the other team had the world’s best batsman, one of the bowlers of this generation, and two highly-skilled wristspinners. Essentially, this game was like an Angry Bird fighting Thanos. The impression hit home even further when Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav worked in tandem. From 78 for 2, it was quickly 89 for 5 as the revolutions those two put on the ball produced dip, drift and sheer magic.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Rassie van der Dussen tried to reverse sweep his way out of trouble and was bowled. JP Duminy figured he might read the turn better if he played off the back foot. Out lbw. Even their captain, Faf du Plessis, couldn’t keep a slider from crashing into his stumps.South Africa were on a recovery mission from that point on and though Chris Morris did rather well in the final overs, walloping 42 off 34 balls, the early damage was just too much. That is why Bumrah was the biggest influence in this game and watching him was a pleasure. The fast bowler’s glare tends to go down in history. But it’s even cooler when they smirk. It’s almost as if they’re telling the batsmen, “heh, is it that easy to beat you?”Bumrah’s upper lip curled several times in his first over on World Cup debut. He had Quinton de Kock – a legitimate contender for Man of the Series in this tournament – looking like a cardboard cut-out. Everything zipped past the edge and each time, the bowler just smirked. Each time, all he did was smirk. WATCH – Highlights of Chahal’s magical spell on Hotstar (India only)A wicket looked around the corner, except it was Hashim Amla who fell, caught at first slip, off the first ball he faced from Bumrah. Du Plessis walked in with four catchers behind him.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The level of cricket at this World Cup is also a function of the pitches being rolled out (and maybe the 10.30am starts as well). Groundsmen all across England have been good enough to leave a little grass on the pitches – it was uneven in Southampton, resulting in uneven bounce – and that’s made the contest between bat and ball all the more compelling. So making runs here mattered. It signalled that you had the bottle to succeed. And Rohit Sharma showed plenty.A few of his 122 runs came off mis-hits. He was even dropped on 1 when Rabada was in the middle of a scary good spell. But then, in the eighth over, he hit a glorious pull shot and never looked back. Braving through very difficult spells of fast bowling is a part of his game that doesn’t get enough credit.”Couldn’t play my natural game,” Rohit said at the presentation. “You have to play out and see what the ball was doing and take your time to play those shots. Certain shots that I love to play, I had to cut it down and make sure I play close to the body and make sure I leave as many balls as possible in the initial spell. Those are the basics that you had to do on a pitch like that and that’s what I was trying to do.”Sticking to that gameplan meant he was there to help India recover from a poor start (They lost Shikhar Dhawan for 8). He was there when South Africa got rid of Virat Kohli thanks to a perfectly executed plan (consistently bowl back of a length and along the line of fifth stump). And he was still there when the winning runs were hit (Hardik Pandya putting the final flourish with a violent cut shot). You can’t ask more of an opener.South Africa, meanwhile, have a lot to think about. They’ve lost all three of their matches at this World Cup, and although the format allows for a slow start, the team is short on resources and practically bereft of confidence.Rabada was the only one trying to make things happen. Nine of his first 18 deliveries made the batsman lose control. “Come oooonnnn!” he’d screamed watching the Rohit catch go down, fists clenched, head slanted upwards, a vision of pure anger. He used that emotion to fuel his performance, harassing the Indian batsmen with his pace, bounce and laser-like accuracy. But the problem was, even when he generated those wicket-taking opportunities, his team-mates kept messing it up. Rabada fooled Rohit on 107 as well only for David Miller to drop an absolute dolly at cover. And that basically summed up South Africa. One captivating genius. Ten others struggling to keep up.

Arsenal player ratings vs Man Utd: The Gunners are going all the way! Tireless Leandro Trossard and superb William Saliba secure battling victory to take Premier League title race into the final weekend

Mikel Arteta's side were not at their best at Old Trafford, but held out under second-half pressure to keep Manchester City honest.

Arsenal ensured that the Premier League title race will go down to the final day of the season as they held out for a battling 1-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday. Manchester City still know that wins in each of their final two games will seal top spot, but Mikel Arteta's side have at least pushed them all the way.

Rasmus Hojlund wasted a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring for United after Scott McTominay robbed Thomas Partey on the edge of the Arsenal box, as the Denmark striker slipped and fired over. Arsenal made him pay soon after, too, as Kai Havertz took advantage of Casemiro's failure to play him offside and squared for Leandro Trossard to steer home.

The Gunners looked comfortable for the remainder of the first half, but as the game wore on after the break, they began to come under pressure from the home side. That said, substitute Gabriel Martinelli was able to force Andre Onana into an excellent save on the counter-attack, while the United 'keeper made a further stop to deny Declan Rice from long-range.

United huffed and puffed into six minutes of stoppage-time as the heavens opened, but Arsenal held out, and now must beat Everton on the final day while hoping for a City slip-up against either Tottenham or West Ham.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Old Trafford…

David Raya (7/10):

Barely stretched but dealt with a number of crosses into his box well. Couple of hairy moments with the ball at his feet, but otherwise a calming presence.

Ben White (6/10):

Troubled more and more by Garnacho as the game wore on, but held his own well. Got forward plenty, though his final ball wasn't particularly great.

William Saliba (8/10):

Dominant presence at the heart of the defence. Brilliant block challenge on Garnacho as he broke into the box in the second half summed up his strong showing. Threat from set-pieces, too.

Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Outmuscled Hojlund on more than one occasion. Solid.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (6/10):

Amad's pace and trickery threatened to cause him problems, but the Japan international stood up well and made a couple of key tackles.

Martin Odegaard (5/10):

Couldn't influence the game as he would have liked as he was crowded out a lot of the time.

Thomas Partey (5/10):

Early lapse almost gifted Hojlund a goal and he took a long time to start influencing the game in a positive manner. Eventually settled down in the second half.

Declan Rice (6/10):

Did his best to carry Arsenal forward when they were coming under pressure, has had better performances in recent weeks.

Getty ImagesAttack

Bukayo Saka (4/10):

Nothing he tried came off, and while he chased back admirably, Dalot was too often able to gallop away from him and spark attacks. Perhaps beginning to tire at the end of a tough season, and was forced off with an injury late on.

Kai Havertz (7/10):

Took advantage of the space he was allowed to get to the byline and lay on Trossard's goal. Showed some nice bits of close control, but wasn't the out ball Arsenal needed as they struggled through the second half.

Leandro Trossard (8/10):

Superb movement allowed him to tap in Havertz's low cross. Movement into central areas caused problems, and he carried the ball well on occasion, too.

On in stoppage-time for Partey.

Jakub Kiwior (N/A):

Stuck with the team that has been winning games during the run-in, and made a smart substitution by bringing Martinelli on to pose a counter-attacking threat.

Rangers make contact to sign Premier League defender in January transfer

After enjoying an unbeaten run to start Philippe Clement's tenure in fine fashion, Rangers saw all of their progress come to a crashing halt in the Old Firm derby, as Celtic secured all three points to regain the advantage in the Scottish Premiership title race. The Gers must now use the January transfer window to close the gap on their rivals, given that they sit eight points behind with two games in hand.

With that said, reports suggest that Rangers have returned to the Premier League in an attempt to land another addition for Clement. This would follow the arrival of Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Fabio Silva at the start of the month.

Rangers transfer news

It remains to be seen whether Silva will discover his goalscoring touch at Ibrox, but if he does then Rangers will have themselves one of the smartest deals of the January window. The forward may not be their only reinforcement arriving from England's top flight, either, with the Scottish giants reportedly dipping back into the Premier League to potentially sign Liverpool's Owen Beck.

Clement could finally replace Kent in Rangers swoop for £2.5m wizard

The Gers are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the talented winger this month.

ByDan Emery Jan 3, 2024

According to Simon Jones of The Daily Mail, via Ibrox News, Rangers have made an approach to sign Liverpool youngster Beck this month. Liverpool have reportedly already turned down any attempt to land the left-back from Ibrox chiefs, however, as they aim to use Beck as cover for the injured Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.

The full-back has just been recalled from Scottish Premiership side Dundee but looks unlikely to make a return to the league through a move to Ibrox this month. With Borna Barisic out of contract in the summer and Ridvan Yilmaz struggling to make the left-back spot his own, Rangers must now seek a reinforcement from elsewhere, having reportedly been turned down by Liverpool.

"Popular" Beck would be perfect for Clement

After making 17 appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Dundee this season, Beck would have had no trouble slotting straight into the current Rangers side, making Liverpool's reported rejection all the more frustrating. At 21-years-old, the full-back is only likely to improve too, which would have given Clement a permanent solution to his left-back woes. Now, however, the former AS Monaco boss must continue his search before the end of the transfer window.

Liverpool defender Owen Beck.

It's no real surprise that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have decided to keep hold of Beck, given the praise he earned whilst out on loan at Dundee. Among those with plenty of positives to say has been Tony Docherty, who said back in October via The Courier: “Owen is doing exceptionally well and with international recognition as well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if people are talking about him. But he’s such a grounded boy and is very popular here.

"I think he enjoys playing here – the football side of it and the camaraderie in the dressing-room as well. We’ll just keep his feet on the ground and he’ll, hopefully, keep performing the way he’s performing. That level of consistency will attract attention.”

Spurs identify Mauro Icardi as "solution" to resolve key problem for Ange

Tottenham reportedly see a "world-class" £124,000-per-week player as the "solution" to one key problem facing manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs targeting new attackers in January

As widely reported, Spurs are targeting a new attacker in 2024, alongside the possible signing of a centre-back and midfielder.

Journalist says "rapid" 25-year-old is now "keen" to join Ange at Spurs

He’s a target for the Lilywhites ahead of January.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 29, 2023

Injuries and suspensions have ravaged Tottenham's squad since early November, when both Micky van de Ven and James Maddison were hauled off against Chelsea with long-term problems.

Since then, Spurs have also been forced to cope without the likes of Yves Bissouma, Cristian Romero, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon and others in large parts – with all the aforementioned either having been or are currently injured/suspended.

Tottenham have been tipped to target a centre-back, midfielder and winger in January to shore up Postecoglou's options as a result, while there is also the small matter of replacing Harry Kane next year.

The Lilywhites have done extremely well without their former talisman overall, ranking among the league's highest goalscorers, but just one or two injuries could threaten to hamper their attacking prowess.

Spurs are apparently drawing up a shortlist of strikers to replace Kane next year. Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is attracting interest from Tottenham in that regard, while there have been sporadic Spurs links to Brentford star Ivan Toney.

It isn't entirely ruled out that Spurs will move to bring in a new number nine in January, especially if Richarlison leaves (Dean Jones), with reports from Spain now sharing an interest in Galatasaray striker Mauro Icardi.

Tottenham see Icardi as striker "solution"

Indeed, according to a Spanish media source, Tottenham see Icardi as a "solution" to add more firepower up front after Kane's departure to Bayern Munich in the summer.

The Argentine, who's finished multiple campaigns as Serie A's top goalscorer in the past, also won Italy's footballer of the year award in 2018.

Last year, Icardi's fine form earned him a spot in the 2022/2023 Turkish Super Lig team of the season, playing a crucial role in Galatasaray's charge for the title.

The Argentine has won eight major trophies across a decorated career, and his experience could be a real draw for Postecoglou as he looks to build a silverware-winning team at Tottenham.

On a reported £124,000-per-week salary (Salary Sport), the 30-year-old has been called "world-class" by former teammate Eder.

“Icardi is a top, world-class player," said the ex-Nerazzurri striker to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He is often criticised unfairly because he doesn’t help the team a lot, but there is nobody like him in front of goal.”

Harrison dropped in Everton’s predicted lineup vs Man Utd

The Premier League is back in action this weekend and Goodison Park is set to be rocking as Manchester United are the first to take on Everton following a ten-point deduction during the international break for a breach of Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Merseyside club had picked up three wins from their last four outings in the top flight and created a nice bit of room between themselves and the relegation zone. However, the FFP breach has plummeted the side down to 19th.

Nevertheless, a victory for the Toffees this weekend could take Sean Dyche's men straight out of the bottom three, with plenty of football still to be played and the manager could even make changes from the team's 3-2 win over Crystal Palace last time out to add some solidity in the middle of the park.

1 GK – Jordan Pickford

Everton's JordanPickford

Starting Jordan Pickford in goal is a no-brainer for Dyche. The shot-stopper has been one of the Toffees' best performers throughout what has been a difficult spell these past few years and has proven himself to be one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the Premier League this term, having conceded the second-fewest number of goals from teams in the bottom half of the table.

The former Sunderland star boasts a 67.4% save percentage in the current campaign and has been a very effective sweeper-keeper for the Merseyside club, averaging 1.33 defensive actions outside the penalty area per 90.

2 RB – Ashley Young

Bringing Ashley Young to Goodison Park was a smart move by Dyche during the summer. The veteran can play anywhere on the flanks and has proven that once more in recent matches by featuring at right-back, with Nathan Patterson being forced to sit on the bench.

Young will likely be in Dyche's starting lineup to face his former side Manchester United and will be tasked with marking his old teammate Marcus Rashford, who has been on a turgid run of form this term, scoring merely once in 16 appearances for the Red Devils. Meanwhile, Young has won 64.7% of his tackles this season, according to FotMob, which could make for a tasty battle on that side.

3 CB – James Tarkowski

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

James Tarkowski was named the vice-captain of Everton back in August and has led the line brilliantly in the absence of Seamus Coleman. While the centre-back did play a helping hand in the build-up to Crystal Palace's second goal prior to the international break, it's unlikely that the manager will drop a player he believes to be "outstanding".

Compared to all other central defenders from Europe's top five leagues over the past 365 days, Tarkowski is in the top 1% for blocks per 90 and the top 9% for aerial duels per 90 but is also in the top 10% for shots on goal per 90, showcasing his threat from set-pieces which will be important against a shaky Man United defence.

4 CB – Jarrad Branthwaite

Like his centre-back partner this season, Jarrad Branthwaite was the central cause behind a Palace goal two weeks ago, tripping Eberechi Eze in the box and giving away a penalty. However, it's unlikely that Branthwaite will be punished given how solid he's been at the back for the Toffees, earning plaudits from Premier League legend Alan Shearer, who labelled him as "outstanding".

3 players Everton could sign if Branthwaite leaves including £22m wonderkid

Everton could lose their breakthrough centre-back star to a new club soon, with targets being drafted up in case he does depart.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 18, 2023

The duo could face Anthony Martial, with United's star striker Rasmus Hojlund not set to return until midweek. The Frenchman has bagged just one goal this season and is still waiting for his first Premier League goal of the campaign.

5 LB – Vitaliy Mykolenko

vitaliy-mykolenko-everton-premier-league

Rounding off the back four, Vitaliy Mykolenko will likely keep his place in Dyche's defence, having had an excellent game last time out at Selhurst Park, scoring a goal within the opening minute of the match before his shot walloped the post and led to Abdoulaye Doucoure's tap-in for Everton's second.

The Ukrainian completed 100% of his dribbles during the game in London, completed four passes into the final third and won 67% of his tackles, while also making five ball recoveries and two interceptions. It was a sensational display by the fullback who deserves another crack at the whip against United.

6 DM – Amadou Onana

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Amadou Onana has been a key player in the middle of the park ever since Dyche took the reins. However, the Belgium international struggled against Palace a fortnight ago. In fact, no Everton player received a lower Sofascore rating during the match than Onana with 6.5.

The Manchester United-linked midfielder didn't win a single tackle versus the Eagles and lost 67% of his ground duels while also picking up a yellow card for his troubles. Onana was whipped off at half-time for Idrissa Gueye. Perhaps the Belgian will be one of Dyche's only changes ahead of this weekend's game against the Red Devils but could just about hang on to his spot considering how good he's been at Goodison.

7 DM – Idrissa Gueye

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye

Idrissa Gueye was Everton's hero on the day, coming off the bench for a subpar Onana and scoring the winning goal four minutes from time. The Senegalese general made two clearances, four ball recoveries and won 100% of his tackles against Palace while bringing a lot of energy to the side.

At the ripe age of 34, Gueye returned to the Toffees for the second time in his career in 2022 for £2m and may have just played his way back into the starting lineup. However, the self-proclaimed "perfectionist" won't be replacing another former United player in James Garner.

8 RM – James Garner

James Garner.

Having received little to no game-time at Old Trafford, James Garner made the permanent switch to Everton in 2022 for £15.5m but it wasn't until this season that fans saw his true potential. Garner has been a key, but versatile player for the Toffees under Dyche and has been used on the wings in previous games in this campaign.

While Jack Harrison has been playing well for Everton, it would make sense to put Garner on the flanks to offer more defensive nous alongside Ashley Young, especially if Luke Shaw returns to action from his lengthy injury spell and starts linking up with Rashford once more.

9 LM – Dwight McNeil

Everton winger Dwight McNeil.

Dwight McNeil is another player who could possibly drop out of Everton's starting lineup when Manchester United come to town this weekend. In the last match, the winger had merely one shot on goal and just two touches in the opposition's penalty area. Additionally, only two of his seven crosses were successful, according to FotMob.

Gueye could have easily displaced McNeil in the team instead of Harrison but the former is creating 1.18 chances per 90 for Everton this season compared to Harrison's 0.63 per 90 and has a deadly delivery from set-pieces which could be the key to victory for the Toffees.

10 AM – Abdoulaye Doucoure

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

At Selhurst Park, Doucoure went level with centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin in leading the goalscoring charts by bagging his side's second of the game. The former Watford man has been exceptional under Dyche and has scored more goals than any other player in 2023.

Everton star sold for £27.5m has outscored Doucoure & DCL in 2023

This player went on to become a “club legend” after leaving Everton in 2013.

ByAdam Scully Nov 5, 2023

Doucoure is a handful for any defender and has started every single match in the Premier League so far this term so it doesn't seem likely that Dyche will look to upset the apple cart this weekend.

Davies starts & "wonderful" talent benched in predicted Rangers lineup v Aris

Glasgow Rangers return to Europa League action this Thursday, and they will be hoping to gain revenge on Aris Limassol after they defeated the Gers last month in what was a rather surprising result, to say the least.

The Ibrox side were in a crisis then. Michael Beale had been sacked just days before and interim manager Steven Davis was thrown into the deep end and this culminated in a 2-1 defeat against the Cypriot side.

The Gers have gotten their act together since then, however, appointing Philippe Clement as their new manager and going unbeaten across his first eight matches.

The 1-1 draw with Aberdeen in the Premiership at the weekend was the first time the club have dropped points domestically since the Belgian arrived, and he will be looking for an immediate response.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast and several players unavailable due to suspension and not being included in the squad, the 49-year-old will need to make some changes to his starting XI.

With this in mind, we predict that the manager will make four changes from the stalemate against the Dons on the weekend…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

The former Crystal Palace ‘keeper has been a revelation between the posts for the club this season, especially with recent goalkeeping troubles plaguing the side.

Butland has featured in every single match this term, conceding 21 goals across 24 matches, along with keeping 11 clean sheets.

A third group stage clean sheet would go a long way to seeing the Gers achieve knockout football.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier

The 32-year-old is currently the top scorer for the Light Blues this season as the festive season approaches, finding the back of the net on 12 occasions so far.

The defender loves Europe’s second-tier competition and was even the top scorer during the 2021/22 edition, finishing with seven goals and remarkably, they all came during the knockout stages.

3 CB – Ben Davies

Ben Davies

The first change to the side will see Davies come in and replace Connor Goldson, who is suspended for the tie.

The centre-back picked up his third yellow card of the group stage against Sparta Prague in the previous tie and this means he won’t be available for selection against Aris.

Clement will replace him with Davies, who has started every match of the group stage so far, yet has made the starting XI just four times in the league.

4 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The second change Clement will make is bringing in Souttar for Leon Balogun, as the 35-year-old wasn’t included in the Europa League squad by Beale.

It was a poor decision, especially with Balogun’s experience, yet the Scot will be able to step up and form a solid partnership with Davies.

5 LB – Borna Barisic

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

The Croatian started against Aberdeen, yet due to yet another error by Beale, who failed to include Ridvan Yilmaz in his Europa League squad, he will be forced to start against Aris.

Barisic only has a few months left of his current contract, and it remains to be seen whether this will be his final season in Glasgow.

6 CM – John Lundstram

Jack Butland

The Englishman has been solid in recent weeks and, under Clement, he has started all eight games and returned to the sort of form which saw him propel the Gers into the Europa League final in 2022.

During that semi-final tie against RB Leipzig, the former Premier League midfielder popped up with the winner with just minutes to go, thus earning cult hero status in the process.

Expect him to retain his place against the Cypriot side.

7 CM – Ryan Jack

The third change by the Belgian will see Jack return to the starting XI in place of Jose Cifuentes.

The Ecuadorian is finding his feet at the Ibrox side following a slow start and against the Dons, the 24-year-old looked comfortable at the heart of the midfield, taking 81 touches, and succeeded with 88% of his attempted passes.

Jack has started just once in the competition, yet he has won 88% of his ground duels and Clement may just prefer his experience alongside Lundstram.

8 RW – Ross McCausland

The man of the moment. McCausland will be Clement’s fourth and final change as he will come into the side.

Clement has a host of youth talents in the Gers academy ready to break into the first team

The youngster has recently signed a new contract which will keep him at the club for the next three and half years, and it is a wise investment by Clement.

He has broken into the first team over the previous few weeks and secured his first start for the Light Blues against Livingston before the international break.

He could add something extra to the attack and don’t be surprised to see him shining yet again.

9 AM – Todd Cantwell

The Englishman started on the right against Aberdeen and while he made five key passes and succeeded with 100% of his dribbles, there was something missing in his performance.

His best position is clearly just behind the striker and he registered eight goal contributions from that role during the second half of last season after joining from Norwich City.

This means Tom Lawrence will drop to the bench to accompany the attacking midfielder. The 29-year-old – who was dubbed as “wonderful” by journalist Josh Bunting – could be an important player for the club this term, and his impact will be useful from the bench tomorrow.

10 LW – Abdallah Sima

Rangers loanee Abdallah Sima.

The on-loan Brighton and Hove Albion starlet has really made the left wing role his own recently. Sima has managed to find the back of the net on nine occasions and he scored during the first two matches of the group stage, including the winner against Real Betis.

He will make yet another appearance in the starting XI against Aris.

Leeds: Bielsa’s "unplayable" £10m sale is now outscoring Piroe this season

Leeds United have enjoyed a strong return to life in the second tier after they were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

Daniel Farke's side are currently fifth and competing for a play-off spot after 11 matches as they attempt to make an instant return to the top-flight.

The signing of Joel Piroe has been a crucial piece of business for the Whites, on current evidence, as the Dutch marksman has hit the ground running with five goals since his move to Elland Road.

However, a former Leeds player has outscored the former Swansea star, and the rest of the Leeds squad, in the Championship this season – Jack Clarke.

When did Leeds sell Jack Clarke?

Tottenham Hotspur swooped to sign the then-18-year-old from the club for a reported fee of £10m ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, after his breakthrough year under Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine head coach and former sporting director Victor Orta opted to cash in on the talented teenager, who failed to make the grade at Spurs over the subsequent years.

Clarke only made four first-team appearances for the Premier League club in all competitions and was unable to contribute with a single goal or assist.

Where is Jack Clarke now?

The English youngster currently plays for Sunderland in the Championship, since his permanent move to the Stadium of Light in 2022, and is thriving at this level.

Clarke has racked up an outstanding seven goals in 11 league matches for the Black Cats so far this season, which means that he is the joint-top scorer in the division as it stands.

The 22-year-old whiz was described as "unplayable" by journalist Josh Bunting earlier this year and that is backed up by his superb attacking contributions.

He has created 2.1 chances per match and no Leeds player has managed more than 2.5 per game, whilst none of Farke's stars have produced more than two key passes per clash and scored more than two goals.

How has Piroe performed this season?

Piroe, who was signed from Swansea for more than £10m this summer, has scored five goals and registered 0.5 key passes per outing across 11 Championship starts for the Whites.

The 24-year-old finisher, who has been playing in a number ten role behind Georginio Rutter, is the club's top-scorer and has proven himself to be a reliable option at the top end of the pitch for Farke since his move to Yorkshire earlier this year.

However, Clarke has been in phenomenal form at this level for Sunderland, who are one place above Leeds in the table, with his impressive ability to both score goals and create chances at an exceptional rate.

The young English wizard has been one of the outstanding talents within the division, as evidenced by his place at the top of the scoring charts so far, and it may leave some Leeds supporters wondering what could have been.

It is a shame that the Elland Road faithful did not get to enjoy the 5 foot 11 gem's development at the club. Instead, they have had to watch on from afar as Bielsa's 2019 sale has become an 'unplayable' Championship star.

Cristiano Ronaldo has the magic touch! Portugal icon ends Al-Nassr's miserable winless run as they scrape past Roberto Firmino's Al-Ahli in Saudi Pro League clash

    TELL ME MORE

There was no shortage of star power as several familiar names in Europe were battling for the three points on either side including former Liverpool star Firmino, Frank Kessie, and Riyadh Mahrez for Al-Ahli to match up with a star-studded Al-Nassr side led by their Portuguese talisman. However, the big names kept holding their fire as both teams adopted a caution-first approach in the first half. It was almost a snoozefest until the final 10 minutes and Ronaldo had little to do in front of goal after being starved of service by a gritty Al-Ahli defence. The first gilt-edged chance fell for the hosts but the crossbar denied Merih Demiral after he jumped the highest to get his head to a corner floated in by Mahrez. A few minutes later, Ronaldo jumped for joy after he scored from an acute angle but VAR intervened and deemed him to be offside by a whisker during the build-up.

The second half was much livelier after the half-time team talks with their respective managers. More spaces started opening up in midfield and Firmino scored for his team after Allan Saint-Maximin set him up. However, VAR struck down the goal to keep the scoreline unchanged. Both teams further upped the ante in the final 30 minutes but a reckless challnege from Roger Ibanez inside the box on Sami Al-Najei proved fatal. Ronaldo stepped up from the spot, sent Edouard Mendy the wrong way with a stuttered run-up and placed his effort at the corner to finally break the deadlock. Firmino & Co gave their all in the final quarter to salvage at least a point from the match but could not find a way through Al-Nassr's stubborn defence as the Knights of Najd ended their four-match winless run.

    THE MVP

Ronaldo was once again the difference-maker! He was brilliant in patches and that proved to be enough to seal the three points. To be fair, he would have been on the scoresheet much earlier but for VAR. Nonetheless, he was clinical from the spot and that magic touch helped his team to reduce the deficit to nine points with leaders Al-Hilal on top – who have a match in hand.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Ibanez must face the brunt for that brain fade moment that cost his side the three points. He had no intention of playing the ball and dangled his trailing feet out to catch Al-Najei, who made the most of the contact. He was already on a yellow and was lucky to not get the marching orders as it would have spelt further trouble for the Royals.

    WHAT COMES NEXT?

Ronaldo will now head back to Lisbon to join his Portugal team-mates ahead of the international fixtures. Portugal will play friendlies against Sweden and Slovenia on March 21 and 26 respectively where the 39-year-old will look to add to his record international goal tally. After fulfilling his national team commitments, he will return to Riyadh to take on Al-Tai on March 30.
