Manchester United haven't been having the best of seasons this year, with their Champions League campaign ending in misery and qualification for next year's edition looking a little tricky at present.

However, there have been some bright spots, such as the win against Liverpool in the FA Cup and the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo.

The incredibly talented youngster has looked unreal for the Red Devils this season, and his valuation has soared because of it.

In fact, the academy gem is already worth as much money as a player the club sold in 2019, a sale which has since looked like a stroke of genius.

Mainoo made his debut for United last season, but with a total of just 87 minutes across three appearances, he didn't catch the attention of the wider footballing public.

It's been an entirely different story for the young Englishman this year. He has played 1417 minutes of first-team action across 20 games, and he hasn't just been making up the numbers; he's been thriving.

Ten Hag has primarily used the 18-year-old as a central and defensive midfielder, meaning his return of two goals is to be expected. However, what certainly wasn't expected, at least from those who were unfamiliar with him, is just how composed he is.

For example, the clash against Liverpool on Sunday was arguably the Red Devils' biggest game of the season and yet the Stockport-born gem looked utterly unfazed by it all, calmly going about his business as if it was his 230th game for the club and not his 23rd.

Erik ten Hag highlighted this incredibly impressive side of his game earlier in the season when he said, "He is very talented. He has to work hard, but he looks very composed. He is very mature for his age. What he brings to the team is his composure and his game understanding."

The right-footed gem looks destined for great things in the game, and his recent England call-up and soaring valuation reflect that.

The CIES Football Observatory values the youngster at around €30m or £26m, which is remarkable considering his age and happens to be the same valuation given to a former Red Devil sold at just the right time in 2019.

Romelu Lukaku's valuation this season

The player in question is Belgian international Romelu Lukaku, who, after signing for Inter Milan from United in August 2019 for a fee of around £73m, has endured an interesting career, to put it diplomatically.

The Antwerpen-born poacher's return of 42 goals and 13 assists in 96 games for the Red Devils was reasonable enough, but his output of 64 goals and 16 assists in just 95 games for the Nerazzurri across the 2019/2020 and 2020/21 seasons was simply outrageous.

In fact, his form was so electric in those two years that his former club, Chelsea, opted to smash their transfer record – at the time – and spend a whopping £97.5m to bring him to Stamford Bridge in August 2021.

Despite starting the season reasonably well for the Blues and scoring three goals in his first three league games, the wheels quickly began to fall off. In December, he agreed to an ill-advised interview with Sky Italia, in which he complained about life at Stamford Bridge, criticised Thomas Tuchel and spoke about his desire to return to the San Siro, and it was all over.

With a rather underwhelming return of just 15 goals and two assists in 44 appearances in west London and his bridges very much burned, he rejoined Inter on loan for the following season.

His second stint with the blue and black half of Milan wasn't quite as prolific as the first, but 14 goals and seven assists in 37 games was still reasonably impressive given everything he had gone through the season prior.

However, upon the season's conclusion, it was revealed that he had been talking to Juventus about a potential move the following year, which, given the enormous rivalry between the two clubs, was a massive problem. The Inter fans then aggressively turned their backs on the 30-year-old, and he was left scrambling to find a new side to join after the Old Lady also cooled their interest following fan pressure.

Luckily for him, Jose Mourinho's AS Roma decided to take the chance on him, and so far, it has worked out for all parties involved. In his 37 appearances, he's scored 18 goals and provided four assists.

However, he's scored just ten goals in the league and faced criticism from ex-Juve star Angelo di Livio for being "lazy." So, he still looks a ways off the striker who was tearing it up for Inter a few years ago.

In all, this rapid fall from grace has seen the 113-cap international's value fall just as quickly, with CIES Football Observatory now pricing the former United ace at just €30m, or £26m, which is the same as Mainoo, who is 12 years his junior.

To add insult to injury, West Brom have lost a star man this week but could look to dip into the transfer market to rectify the loss and the club should definitely reignite their interest in one special attacker from Portugal.

It was confirmed by the club on New Year's Day that loanee Jeremy Sarmiento has returned to Brighton and Hove Albion, having spent a half-season at the Hawthorns.

It was believed that Brighton's recent injury crisis in the forward areas was the reason behind the Ecuadorian's return to the south coast, however, reports on Tuesday morning revealed that the Seagulls are willing to allow Sarmiento to go back out on loan, this time to West Brom's promotion rivals Ipswich Town.

Sarmiento's time in the Midlands didn't quite go as planned. The 21-year-old became a mere squad player under Corberan and averaged 35 minutes per game throughout the campaign. Overall, the youngster made 21 appearances for the Baggies, including 20 in the Championship, but this was spread across a total of 737 minutes in the team.

The biggest worry for the head coach will be his lack of depth in the wide areas as the experienced Matt Phillips has been ruled out until April at the earliest, while Grady Diangana will now head off on international duty with the DR Congo to compete in the African Cup of Nations.

As a result, the club must try to sign a new winger before the January window closes and one player in particular could be the perfect fit.

Tiago Gouveia's stats this season

One player West Bromwich Albion have been linked with in the past is Benfica attacker Tiago Gouveia. It was reported by The Telegraph's Mike McGrath during the summer transfer window that the Baggies were keeping tabs on Gouveia as Corberan was keen to bolster his attacking department, although a move never came to fruition.

However, given the recent loss of both Sarmiento and Diangana, reigniting interest in the 22-year-old would make a lot of sense from West Brom's perspective.

Gouveia has made eight appearances for the Liga Portugal champions this season, including three in the UEFA Champions League, but has played just 185 minutes in total for Benfica, which comes to about 23 minutes per appearance.

Nevertheless, Gouveia's career stats with Benfica and Estoril are quite impressive too as the winger, who can play on either flank, has recorded 28 goal contributions in all competitions since the beginning of the 2019/20 season. His most prolific position has been on the left wing which is the area that West Brom need to fill the most.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Tom Fellows could leave the Hawthorns this month, which could be yet another blow to Corberan and his side's hopes of promotion, but in 16 appearances this season, the Englishman has failed to register a single goal or assist. Furthermore, since the start of the 2019/20 season, Fellows has bagged 27 goal contributions for West Brom, none of which have come since taking the step up to the first team.

Gouveia could then represent something of an upgrade on the Englishman, having notably recorded 11 goals and assists in the league last season, as well as providing 11 big chances, while Fellow, meanwhile, has created just two 'big chances' since returning to the first-team fold this summer – having failed to score and bagged just two assists in League Two with Crawley Town in 2022/23.

Even if only a loan deal was possible, the £3m-rated gem could help temporarily plug a gaping hole in West Brom's forward line, buying Corberan time until next summer.

Na manhã deste sábado (20), o Corinthians realizou a sua última atividade visando a partida contra o Vasco, neste domingo (21), às 16h, pela 37ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, na Neo Química Arena.

Este trabalho, na véspera do último confronto do Timão em casa neste Brasileirão, foi dividido em duas partes pelo técnico Vagner Mancini, que iniciou na parte interna do CT Joaquim Grava, passando alguns vídeos com instruções para os atletas e depois comandou um treino tático já em campo.

Ao fim do treinamento, o elenco corintiano também repetiu algumas situações de bola parada.

O duelo contra o Vasco pode ser o último de real importância para o Timão na temporada. O time da Parque São Jorge, que ocupa a décima colocação do Brasileiro, com 49 pontos, briga pela última vaga brasileira na pré-Libertadores, mas, para isso, precisa vencer os dois últimos jogos e torcer para tropeços de Santos e Athletico-PR.

Arsenal are fighting on all fronts this season – well, bar the League Cup – and despite a slow start to the campaign and some slightly sluggish attacking play, the men in red and white are starting to get back to their ferocious best from last year.

Once they get there, they'll be a serious threat to any team in the Premier League and Champions League.

They have added some real steel to their midfield in Declan Rice, and the partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel looks more impenetrable than ever.

According to reports from Spain, Santos' latest exciting youngster, Marcos Leonardo, has been attracting attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Arsenal.

The report reveals that the Gunners have been looking for ways to add to their impressive front line for quite some time and consider the young striker to be 'one of the most outstanding' talents in Brazil.

The north Londoners have reportedly lodged a bid of €20m – £17m – and are keen to bring him to London in January, taking advantage of the historic club's shocking relegation.

It would represent a sizeable fee for a 20-year-old who has never played outside his homeland.

Still, with South American football expert Nathan Joynes haling the youngster as a "special talent", Edu and co will be hoping that he can replicate the trajectory of Martinelli in N5.

Now, the first thing to make clear is that it would be wildly unfair on the Santos star to compare him to Martinelli with the expectation that he will come out on top. He is two years the Arsenal star's junior and has yet to experience any football outside the Brazilian Serie A.

However, were he to join the Gunners, he could look to the former Ituano player as an example of how to successfully jump from South American football to the Premier League.

That said, when looking at the pair's underlying numbers from this season, there is a lot that should excite the Arsenal faithful.

For starters, the "natural goalscorer", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registers a higher non-penalty expected goals and assist figure, as well as more shots on target and the ability to hold onto the ball, as he is dispossessed quite a bit less than Martinelli.

However, his ability to take defenders on, create opportunities for teammates and carry the ball are significantly weaker, alongside a general lack of accurate passing.

Nevertheless, these are flaws that a young, raw and explosive talent would be expected to have, and with the right coaching, there is no reason to believe that he wouldn't improve – following in the footsteps of Martinelli who notably bagged 15 goals last season following an initial slow start to life in England.

Ultimately, Leonardo wouldn't come straight into the first team, and fans shouldn't expect him to, but you only have to look at the trajectory of his compatriot to see that there is a pathway for a young Brazilian talent as exciting as this.
