Southee praises 'unnoticed' Wagner

Tim Southee has heaped praise on New Zealand’s fast bowlers, particularly Neil Wagner, whose contribution, according to Southee, has often gone unnoticed

Abhishek Purohit in Wellington12-Feb-2014Tim Southee is happy about the accolades that came fellow fast bowler Neil Wagner’s way after his match-winning performance in the Auckland Test against India.Wagner has often been the workhorse wheeling away in the background while strike bowlers Southee and Trent Boult share the limelight, but at Eden Park, Wagner dismissed several key batsmen on his way to a match haul of eight wickets. Southee was glad that the role played by a key component of an increasingly productive attack was being acknowledged.”It is pleasing to see Wags finally get some credit for the hard work he’s done over the past few years,” Southee said. “I think a lot of it goes unnoticed, not unnoticed by the team, but unnoticed by people watching and probably outside. He does a hell of a job for us and it was pleasing to see him do so well and reap some rewards.”He complements myself and Trent very well. He loves bowling with the old ball and somehow he manages to pick up wickets just before the second new ball and that makes it easier for myself and Trent to come in where there’s two new batsmen around with the second new ball.”The trio of Southee, Boult and Wagner have been bowling New Zealand to Test wins throughout this home summer. There were successive ones against West Indies in Wellington and Hamilton before the Auckland thriller against India. Southee was proud of this grouping and the way they were progressing.”It is nice to have an attack where you can take 20 wickets. We have over the last few Test matches. We have shown a lot of promise over the last year, year and a half and we keep continuing to improve. It is good,” Southee said. “We all complement each other very well. We are forming a good partnership and hopefully we can keep that going in the direction it is.”The Indian batsmen had not been allowed to get away as the New Zealand quicks executed their plans to perfection. This was the reason for the hosts’ success, Southee said.”I think the way we bowled as a group, I think we kept the pressure on and bowled in partnerships and as you saw the wickets were shared around between the three of us. That shows you that we never really gave them a let-off. There was always someone who was coming hard at different times.”They are quality players and you just have to up your game. It becomes a game of patience and sort of who falls first. Little bit of movement off the deck helps as well. The new ball always helps and taking regular wickets and getting batsmen out there and not giving them a chance to settle goes a massive way to creating that pressure.”We have put a lot of thought, and research goes into plans before the series. It is pleasing to see them come off. Shane (Bond) and the computer analysts and Mike Hesson, they put these plans in and it is a reward for them to see the bowlers sticking to them and the success we are having. It is the consistency we are bowling with and the familiar conditions we are used to.”While the Indians no longer had the big batting names of recent years, they came back from a disappointing first innings in Auckland to make 366 in the chase, falling short by 40 runs. Southee said India had a promising line-up, and that New Zealand were expecting a stiff contest in Wellington.”They don’t have the names like the Tendulkars, the Dravids and the Laxmans but they have got the potential to be great players. It is the first time to New Zealand for a few of those players and foreign conditions for them. We have bowled well as a unit and it has put pressure on their batters.”They have obviously had a disappointing tour and are too good a side to roll over. They’ll come hard and they will want to have a win on the tour. They are a far better side than they have shown on this tour so far. They have a lot to prove in this last Test and have a got a lot of quality players and I am sure we are going to have to up our game. They’ll come out and hopefully look to finish their tour on a high. Hopefully we can keep them winless on their trip to New Zealand.”

Of them, Enamul is currently playing club cricket in England, while Nazimuddin has been out of favour since playing a Test against West Indies in November last year.Left-arm spinners Mosharraf Hossain and Saqlain Sajib found places in the preliminary squad, alongside Imrul Kayes, Raqibul Hasan, Farhad Reza, Mehrab Hossain jnr and Nazmul Hossain Milon.Mosharraf was called up for the ODIs in Sri Lanka, but didn’t play a match while Imrul, Raqibul and Mehrab earned call-ups through their domestic performances. Some of these players are also likely to feature in the Bangladesh A team’s tour of England later this summer, as well as the Under-23 side that will play in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup to be held in Singapore. The players will have their fitness assessed, especially those who have been injured in the last three months. Kieswetter eyes Prior example

Craig Kieswetter is refusing to dwell on the disappointments of the India tour and is using the example of a fellow England gloveman as inspiration in his attempts to return

From being England’s first-choice one-day wicketkeeper, Craig Kieswetter now faces a summer on the county circuit trying to force his way back into international contention. But he is refusing to dwell on the disappointments of the India tour and is using the example of a fellow England gloveman as inspiration in his attempts to return.Matt Prior rounded off his winter with a match-saving hundred in Auckland to cap a tour, following on from an impressive series in India, that elevated him to the position of being arguably the finest wicketkeeper-batsman in Test cricket. However, Prior, as Kieswetter is experiencing now, went through a period where people questioned his credentials at the top level when he was dropped after the Sri Lanka tour in 2007.It was Prior’s glovework that was the key reason for his demotion – he was averaging 40.14 when he was left out but had dropped a raft a chances – whereas for Kieswetter the axe came because of a lack of runs in the middle order. Yet while the situations differ somewhat, Prior’s return to the Test scene, and subsequent rise in standing among his associates, shows what can be achieved.”Matt Prior changed his game completely and made himself into the best wicketkeeper-batsman in the world, that in itself is an inspiration,” Kieswetter told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s great to see a player who has gone through a patch like that and come out of the other side where the grass is so much greener.”Not that Kieswetter has suddenly been forgotten by England – that does not happen in the current set up. He was named in the 30-man performance squad for the summer then the 30-man preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy and while neither have much meaning in the bigger picture, the England set-up do not just toss players aside. Kieswetter continues to work with Bruce French, the England wicketkeeping coach, someone he says he has great “trust” with. The disappointment of being dropped lingered with Kieswetter for a little while – it would be a surprise if it hadn’t – but the rapidly approaching county season allowed him to quickly switch his focus back to cricket in an environment at Somerset where he feels extremely secure and well supported. He made 72 in the opening match against Durham batting at No. 3 before moving down the order following Alvrio Petersen’s arrival.”Any time a player gets dropped they have got to get over that,” he said. “But I’ve got a club to be around who can provide the structure I felt I needed. It’s been a good start to the summer and hopefully that can bear some fruit towards the end.”There is, however, a tricky dynamic that has development at Somerset; a challenge for Dave Nosworthy, the new director of cricket, to confront. Kieswetter’s replacement in the England side was Jos Buttler, his Somerset team-mate, and now both men have begun the season eager to take the gloves – for obvious reasons. Ashley Giles, the England limited-overs coach, has been in contact with the county but has said he will not interfere.Kieswetter has started with the gloves in the Championship, but it remains to be seen who does the role when the Yorkshire Bank 40, and later the Twenty20, begins. It seems likely that Buttler will be first choice in coloured clothes with Kieswetter having to bide his time until the former is on international duty for his chance.”It’s going fine at the moment,” he said. “We have a policy and a game plan at the club and that’s something we are dealing with in house. We are pretty confident and comfortable with the situation.”It’s good to have a few keepers around the side, we can work together and feed off each other,” he added. “When you have training days it’s great to work together, share ideas, and we are all good friends. I think that’s really important not just for improving your game but also building your character. At times keeping can be a lonely place, a bit like a goalkeeper I guess, but it’s a very rewarding job and one that I love doing.” Chance to Shine ambassador Craig Kieswetter was helping to promote the ‘play hard, play fair’ message of MCC Spirit of Cricket. Chance to Shine has brought cricket to over 1.8 million state schoolchildren. The programme costs £5million, or £15 per child, to run each year. To make a donation visit www.chancetoshine.org

Yorkshire defend 'Vikings' rebranding

Yorkshire have defended renaming their limited-overs side “Yorkshire Vikings”, insisting the name reflects the history of the region and will help the club appeal to a new, young audience

George Dobell06-Mar-2013Yorkshire have defended renaming their limited-overs side “Yorkshire Vikings”, insisting the name reflects the history of the region and will help the club appeal to a new, young audience. While immediate associations with the Vikings might not be positive – Yorkshire are understandably keen not to be seen to endorse pillaging or plundering – the club feel the name will provide a useful marketing hook and should have no negative connotations. As part of the rebranding the club have agreed a partnership with the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, which will offer “match-day experiences” to younger supporters in a bid to attract new followers to the club.”We wanted a name that was relevant to the community,” Danny Reuben, Head of Media & Marketing at Yorkshire, told ESPNcricinfo. “And, as the Vikings settled here 1,300 years ago and shaped the look and the language of the region, they have had a huge impact. One of their legacies was establishing the three Ridings of Yorkshire and the words ‘York’ and ‘Yorkshire’.”We are also entering into a partnership with the Jorvik Centre in York, which is the home of Viking history in this part of the world, and they will provide match-day experiences which will hope will capture the imagination of younger supporters.”We did have an online poll to pick a new name but we had to ignore the results as it was high-jacked by Lancashire supporters. Had it been up to them, we would have been called the Yorkshire Puddings.”Yorkshire’s commercial director, Andy Dawson, said: “With the Vikings brand, we now have a name that is marketable and gives us a hook to promote the club to a wider audience. Our creativity in developing a new look and feel for the team will enable us to implement new revenue streams and attract a younger audience.”Cricket cannot be viewed simply as a sport. It is a form of entertainment that in modern times operates in a highly competitive environment vying for consumers’ leisure time. We hope that people and in particular children will identify with the Yorkshire Vikings and embrace the activity we have planned at Headingley this season.”Sarah Maltby, director of attractions at the Jorvik Group, agreed that the Vikings’ negative reputation was largely unfair. “The Vikings did many things,” Maltby told ESPNcricinfo. “They did invade, but then they settled, they created towns and cities, they manufactured and they traded across the world. The fierce stereotype people have of them is only one side of the story. They were much more than that.”As well as having a bat and ball game that some have compared to cricket, the Vikings also invented the words “ball”, “run”, “leg”, “loft”, “hit”, “cake” and even “sledge”.Yorkshire, who had been branded as Yorkshire Carnegie in limited-overs cricket until the end of their sponsorship deal with Leeds Metropolitan University, will play under the Vikings name for the first time on their pre-season tour of Barbados, which commences on March 16 against Hampshire Royals.

A apresentação oficial do novo diretor executivo será realizada ainda nesta semana.

Fazendo gols e dando assistências, acho que vou me destacando e assim vai surgir a oportunidade.

Vodafone pulls plug on Australian cricket

Australian cricket will be in search of a new Test match sponsor ahead of the 2013-14 Ashes series, after Vodafone announced it would end a union that has lasted 11 years and furnished the game with more than Aus$10 million in financial support. The telecommunications company will end its relationship with Cricket Australia following the end of next summer’s series against South Africa and Sri Lanka.Vodafone first chimed in as Australia’s major Test-match backer when Ansett Airlines collapsed just weeks ahead of the 2001-02 home summer, and has promoted the brands Orange, Three and Vodafone in turn over more than a decade. However the company’s recent series of network and customer service problems in Australia has prompted a change in focus; the network is also withdrawing its presence in Australia’s V8 motor racing competition.”Like all sports’ sponsorships, there comes a time when the sponsor achieves its partnership objectives and moves on with new strategic priorities,” CA’s commercial general manager, Mike McKenna, said. “We understand that Test cricket has helped Orange, Three and Vodafone become Australian household names, and we look forward to continuing to work with Vodafone next summer in what will be the final season of our successful relationship.”Our partner, via these brands, has helped us promote Test cricket and the sport is better for their long-term support.”While McKenna stressed CA’s view that “the Australian team playing Test cricket at home is possibly the most valuable sports’ sponsorship asset in Australia”, the search for a new major sponsor may yet prove vexing.CA is already heavily reliant on alcohol and fast food sponsorship to maintain the corporate slice of its revenue, and Twenty20 Big Bash League teams all complained last year of the difficulties in finding new sponsors in an increasingly competitive and financially frugal marketplace. However the lure of a home Ashes series in 2013-14 to begin the new partnership is CA’s ace in their pursuit of a new name to emblazon on the Test shirts of its players and sight screens of the country’s grounds.
