Durham seal innings win despite Barker ton

A maiden first-class century from Keith Barker couldn’t prevent Durham from completing an innings and 103-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston

George Dobell at Edgbaston27-May-2011
Scorecard
A maiden first-class century from Keith Barker couldn’t prevent Durham from completing an innings and 103-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston. The win takes Durham up to second place in the table, just three points behind Lancashire, who have played one fewer game. The teams meet at Chester-le-Street in a match that starts on Sunday. In the end, Durham were made to work for this win. When Rikki Clarke became the seventh Warwickshire man to fall in their second innings, there was a possibility the match might not even make it to lunch. As it transpired, however, the game was deep inside the final hour by the time Ruel Brathwaite plucked out the final two wickets. That Warwickshire came so close to saving the game was almost entirely due to the efforts of their final four batsmen. It took Durham 69 overs to prise out the final three wickets as Barker and Naqaash Tahir, in particular, showed a level of resolve that put their top-order colleagues to shame. The absence of Steve Harmison also delayed Durham. Harmison managed just five overs on the final day as he nursed a sprained joint in his spine. He’s also a doubt for the Lancashire game.In many ways, Warwickshire didn’t deserve a draw. The majority of their batting and all of their bowling was pretty awful and Durham outplayed them in all departments. But the resistance of Barker and Naqaash was excellent. Neither man had previously made a first-class half-century, but they put the affable nature of this pitch into perspective with a stand if 117 in 41.2 overs.Unlike many left-handers, Barker is not a particularly elegant batsman. The 24-year-old former pro footballer strikes the ball with tremendous power, however, and played in an admirably straight and compact manner. Before this innings, his previous first-class score was just 31 but, such was the quality of his driving and pulling, in particular, that there appears no obvious reason why he should not develop into a genuine allrounder capable of batting in the top six and bowling as part of a four-man seam attack.Naqaash also impressed. When he made his Championship debut, in 2004, he often acted as nightwatchman and produced several valuable contributions. His batting had regressed since then, however, and this was only his sixth score in excess of 30 in 56 first-class games. For the most part, he was utterly strokeless. He defended stoutly, however and, unlike his top-order colleagues he refused to be drawn into strokes outside the off stump. His 195-ball vigil lasted 69 overs – just 10 minutes short of four hours – and left him suffering from cramp in both arms.In the end, however, it was all in vain. In truth, their resistance only highlighted the fragility of Warwickshire’s top-order batting. On a pitch that has remained docile throughout, Warwickshire’s specialist batsmen continued to attach far too little value to their wickets with Jim Troughton, Darren Maddy and Rikki Clarke all perishing to ill-disciplined prods outside the off stump, while Tim Ambrose played around a straight ball. But, as the ball softened and the bowlers tired, Durham’s attack struggled to finish off the game. There was little help for the spinners and, though Callum Thorp looked dangerous throughout, Ben Stokes struggled to maintain a tight enough line. In the end it was Blackwell who made the breakthrough. The over after Barker reached his chanceless century, he edged one that was pushed on to him to slip.Still Durham’s wait went on, however. Chris Metters lasted for 77 minutes, helping Naqaash add another 55 runs in 25 overs and resist everything Durham could throw at them with the second new ball. Finally, however, just as it appeared that Warwickshire might pull-off a highly unlikely escape, Brathwaite struck the decisive blow. First he produced a quick yorker to end Chris Metters’ 80-minute battle, before he managed to persuade Naqaash to follow one that may have bounced more than the batsman expected and edge the ball to third slip. Just 54 balls remained. It meant Warwickshire ended with just one point from the game – their worst return in a championship since Leicestershire inflicted a similar result in 2002 – while it was the third time in four games that Durham had taken a maximum 24 points.”We’ve got to be better than that,” Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles admitted afterwards. “In the first innings, too many of our batsmen played a part in their own dismissals and we’ve had too many people getting 20s, 30s and 40s without going on to get 100s.”At least our lower-order batsmen showed good courage. But we should never have been in the position where they had to bat for two sessions to save the game. We have to learn from this and do better.”

New look and feel for freshly formed Big Bash teams

The Australian domestic Twenty20 competition, the Big Bash League, moved a step closer to its new and revamped avatar, with eight new sides announcing fresh and innovative team names and colours

The Australian domestic Twenty20 competition, the Big Bash League, moved a step closer to its new and revamped avatar, with eight new sides announcing fresh and innovative team names and colours for the 2011 season which gets underway in December. The competition will feature sides based out of the main grounds in the capitals of each of the six Australian states. Melbourne and Sydney will house an extra team each at the Etihad Stadium, and the Sydney Olympic Park respectively.Cricket Australia’s Mike McKenna said the confirmation of team names was an important milestone in the league’s development. “Completing the process of developing team names is the first step in explaining to fans what the BBL will look like when teams take the field for the first time in December this year,” he said. “A lot has been achieved in a short space of time. While team names, colours and venues have been resolved, work is continuing on a number of other important features of the league, including team logos and uniform development, the competition match schedule, team and BBL operating structures, and the appointment of key personnel by teams.”The move to city, not state, names is a change from traditional Australian cricket. However in order to grow the game we need to move away from the existing state-based structure because we can’t increase the number of teams, and provide more opportunities for players, under the current system which is the core of our four-day and one-day cricket. It’s necessary we take this approach now so that BBL can help grow the game and evolve domestic T20 in Australia.”No-one’s underestimating the mountain of work that still needs to be completed before the tournament starts, including issues surrounding player allocation and private investment.”It’s critical we get the issue of private investment right before we roll out this new competition. We’ve got a meeting with all key parties from CA and the state associations scheduled which will look to finalise this issue and allow teams to continue discussions with potential investors.”In addition to the migration from a state to city-based franchise model, the BBL will also allow private ownership of the teams, though the modalities of investment are yet to be worked out. Despite the entry of private parties, state cricket associations are expected to retain a controlling stake, which is in contrast to the IPL, the biggest and most successful Twenty20 league. McKenna hinted that the focus of allocation will be on creating teams that are evenly matched.”As far as the allocation of players is concerned, we’ve come a long way towards working out the model by which players will be signed by teams,” he said. “We’ve been clear from the outset that we want an even spread of talent to give each team a chance to be successful.”Team nameColourVenueCoachAdelaide StrikersBlueAdelaide OvalDarren BerryBrisbane HeatTealGabbaDarren LehmannHobart HurricanesPurpleBellerive OvalTBCPerth ScorchersOrangeWACA GroundMickey ArthurMelbourne RenegadesRedEtihad StadiumSimon HelmotMelbourne StarsGreenMCGGreg ShipperdSydney SixersPinkSCGTBCSydney ThunderElectric greenSydney Olympic ParkTBC

Hong Kong through to finals

A round-up of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jan-2011

Vaibhav Wategaonkar scored a quick half-century but it wasn’t enough to take Oman through to the finals•ICC/Cricket Europe

Hong Kong beat table-toppers Papua New Guinea by 93 runs at the Hong King Cricket Club to qualify for Friday’s final in the ICC World Cricket League Division Three, where they will play PNG again. Hong Kong’s win also mean they are guaranteed promotion to WCL Div. 2.PNG, who chose to field, had Hong Kong in trouble early on as Rarva Dikana and Hitolo Areni picked up three wickets to reduce Hong Kong to 39 for 3 in the 11th over. However, Hussain Butt, who top-scored with 68 was involved in two crucial 40-plus stands with Irfan Ahmed (25) and Nizakat Khan (36) to take Hong Kong past 100. Areni struck to dismiss Nizakat and Waqas Barkat in quick succession but Butt and captain Najeeb Amar put on 53 runs in just under 10 overs to get the Hong Kong innings back on track. Butt was dismissed with the score on 196 but Nadeem Ahmed hit some big shots to take Hong King to 221 before they were bowled out.Hong Kong’s bowlers then defended the total, bowling PNG out cheaply. Tony Ura and Kila Pala were the only two batsmen who managed to get past 20, as PNG failed to string together any substantial partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nadeem picked up three wickets as PNG were bowled out for 128 in just under 48 overs.”We talked about how we could beat PNG today and knew if we batted first it would be important to make as many runs as possible before our bowlers could get to work on the PNG side,” said Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke.”The important thing for us was to remain focussed and we knew by putting PNG under pressure the side would become vulnerable which they did today. We beat them in a warm-up game without our full strength squad so we knew we had the ability today to beat them, and our ability and strength showed today.”There are plenty of quality sides in Division 2 but my focus since taking this role has been about securing promotion. We have the promotion but this league isn’t over and we want to win the entire tournament in front of our home crowd before we focus our attention to the new challenges and teams Division 2 will throw at us,” said Burke.”We’re obviously disappointed with our play and commitment in the loss to Hong Kong today,” added PNG captain Dikana. “Today was Hong Kong’s final as they battled for survival in the tournament and they were the better side on the day. Congratulations to a well prepared side that fought hard and showed strong spirit.”We have a rematch to see who will take home the title of Division Three champions and I know my team have the ability to take the trophy home to PNG as the best side in the tournament. Our complete focus is on tomorrow as we take one step at a time. Tomorrow is a new ball game.”

Two aggressive half-centuries from Hemin Desai and Vaibhav Wategaonkar carried Oman to a commanding four-wicket win over Denmark at the Kowloon Cricket Club, but it was not enough to allow Oman to qualify for the final.Denmark were sent in to bat and got off to a shaky start, losing their openers with just 38 runs on the board. Carsten Pedersen and Rizwan Mahmood steadied the innings with a 66-run partnership but once Mahmood was dismissed with the score on 104, Denmark suffered a collapse. Rajesh Kumar and Khalid Rashid picked up three wickets apiece as Denmark slumped from 104 for 3 to 181 all out in just under 48 overs.Oman needed to knock the runs off quickly if they were to keep their hopes of qualifying for the final alive. Desai and Zeeshan Siddiqui got them off to a rapid start, adding 34 runs in 2 overs before Siddiqui was dismissed. Desai and Wategaonkar then blasted 41 runs in 17 balls. Desai fell for 51 off just 17 balls with five fours and five sixes. Wategaonkar added another rapid 22 with Adnan Ilyas before Bashir Shah had Ilyas stumped. Oman seemed to lose momentum after his dismissal. Though they reached their target in just under 25 overs with Wategaonkar unbeaten on 54, Hong Kong went ahead of their run-rate by beating PNG to destroy Oman’s hopes of qualifying for the final.

USA’s hopes of qualifying for WCL Div. 2 were ended by Italy, who beat them by four wickets at the Mission Road Ground. Italy will now go on to play Oman in the third-place playoff while USA will play for fifth place against Denmark.Italy got off to a shaky start in their chase of 223, slumping to 52 for 4, but a 102-run partnership between Peter Petricola and wicketkeeper Hayden Patrizi got them back into the game. After Patrizi was out for 50, Michael Raso came in and smashed 38 off 29 deliveries, and Italy got home with 18 balls to spare. Petricola was unbeaten on 69.Petricola had also been Italy’s most successful bowler, taking four wickets as Italy restricted USA to 222 for 8. USA captain Steve Massiah scored 52 and opener Sushil Nadkarni scored 47, but USA didn’t get to a big enough total.”Along with the entire team, I am hugely disappointed to be relegated back to Division Four,” said Massiah. “We didn’t prepare for this tournament as well as we have done in other events and our performances here were nothing like what we know we are capable of when we play cricket.”Certain things didn’t go our way this tournament and we now need to go back to the USA and rethink our strategy and how we are going to bounce back from this and rebuild our team to climb back up the leagues.”

Newcastle could steal Coutinho from Villa

Newcastle United are reportedly now a serious option for Philippe Coutinho in the summer.

The Lowdown: Aston Villa revival

Coutinho is having somewhat of a revival in his career on loan at Aston Villa, after struggling to make a real impact at FC Barcelona.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Premier League knows of his ability from his time at Liverpool, and so do his former teammates, as his now manager Steven Gerrard hailed him as a ‘world-class’ player back in January, while fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino even went as far as to claim that he has ‘magical powers’, in awe of his technical ability.

At Villa now, Coutinho has managed to score four goals and make three assists in 12 games in the top flight so far this season (Transfermarkt), and his performances have put clubs on red alert for the summer.

The Latest: Newcastle option

As per Sport, St. James’ Park is now a ‘serious’ option for Coutinho this summer, but a move depends on whether Villa take up the option to buy him permanently.

The North East club are willing to pay the €40m (£33.6m) fee required, as well as take his whopping €14m (£11.7m) yearly wage off of Barca’s books.

Coutinho’s agents have already let the Catalan giants know of the Tynesiders’ interest, and the player himself is now thought to be attracted to the long-term project, as they look to have secured their safety in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, an agreement between both clubs is now thought to be ‘possible’.

The Verdict: Exciting

The fact that there is a realistic chance of a player of Coutinho’s calibre joining the Magpies is very exciting for the Toon Army.

They have already seen what he is capable of in the top flight with Villa now as well as Liverpool, and a potential partnership in midfield with fellow Brazilian Bruno Guimarães should set their tails wagging.

Nonetheless, he is in his prime at 29 years of age, and the world may not have seen the best of him yet.

Smith ton leaves Gloucestershire facing defeat

Greg Smith scored a career best unbeaten 158 as Leicestershire set Gloucestershire a mountainous target of 488 to win their County Championship Division Two clash at Grace Road

09-Sep-2010
ScorecardGreg Smith scored a career best unbeaten 158 as Leicestershire set Gloucestershire a mountainous target of 488 to win their County Championship Division Two clash at Grace Road. But, by the close, Leicestershire were clear favourites to clinch their sixth victory of the season, having reduced the visitors to 78 for 5 after taking the first three wickets for just five runs in the opening six overs. It was 21-year-old Smith, however, who took the plaudits as he progressed smoothly to a maiden championship century that steered Leicestershire to 351 for four before the declaration came half an hour before tea. It was a magnificent effort from Smith, who is still studying at Durham University and joined up with Leicestershire in July. This was only his fourth championship game of the season but he has totalled 405 runs from those matches at an average of 81. He began the third day on 70 not out and looked composed and secure as the home side steadily added to their overnight lead of 283.Smith was given excellent support by Jacques Du Toit, who reached his 50 off 83 balls and looked in little trouble until chipping an easy catch to mid-on off Jon Lewis having reached 70. It brought to an end a second-wicket stand of 128.Gloucestershire’s bowling lacked any menace or penetration and Smith, who scored a century for Durham University against Nottinghamshire earlier in the season, reached three figures for the first time in championship cricket with a crisp off drive that brought him three runs. His century contained nine boundaries and came off 202 balls.By the time the declaration came Smith had batted for six and a half hours, faced 324 balls and not offered a single chance. It was a marathon knock that emphasised Smith’s potential. It left Gloucestershire facing the daunting task of scoring 488 runs for victory or surviving a minimum 135 overs to avoid defeat. They could hardly have made a worse start with their first three wickets falling for five runs in the space of 20 balls.Jonathan Batty was caught at gully off Nathan Buck and then Will Porterfield fell when he drove the same bowler to mid off. And in the next over from Matthew Hoggard, Chris Dent bagged a pair when he was trapped lbw. Hamish Marshall and Alex Gidman provided some resistance with a stand of 66 before Marshall was caught behind by Tom New trying to cut left arm spinner Claude Henderson. It seemed that Gloucestershire’s miserable day could hardly get any worse. But it did with Chris Taylor prodding a catch to silly mid-off against the bowling of Jigar Naik off the last ball of the day leaving the visitors at 78 for five, still 410 runs behind.

Rangers fans slam Scott Wright v Livingston

Many Glasgow Rangers fans criticised the performance of Scott Wright in their 1-0 win against Livingston in the Premiership on Wednesday night.

It was a game in which the hosts were certainly not at their best at Ibrox but managed to scrape all three points courtesy of a late goal from Scott Arfield.

There were a few disappointing performances for Rangers, but Wright stood out among a bad pack.

The former Aberdeen winger lost out on five of his duels in total and failed to record a single successful dribble, also being unsuccessful with three of his four crosses (SofaScore).

Wright also lost possession of the ball 13 times, the joint-sixth most out of his teammates, and he was hauled off for Ryan Jack shortly after the goal was scored.

These Rangers fans slammed the 24-year-old’s display on Twitter, with one Light Blues supporter going as far as to claim that he was ‘shocking’ last night:
