Rangers fans slam Morelos vs Dundee

Many Glasgow Rangers slammed the performance of Alfredo Morelos despite scoring in their 3-0 win at home to Dundee on Saturday afternoon.

In fairness, the Colombia international took his goal well, bulldozing his way through the visitors’ defence before slotting the ball into the net with his left foot.

However, some home fans were still frustrated by his overall performance, as he lost out on six of his duels and only scored once from his eight shots on goal in total (SofaScore).

He was also guilty of giving the ball away 13 times in the match, the joint-fifth most out of any of his teammates on the pitch (SofaScore), and hopefully the goal will give him confidence to perform better in their next fixture.

Shoaib in more trouble with PCB

Shoaib Akhtar has run into more trouble with the PCB after the board accused him of violating his contract by criticising team management in a television interview.”Akhtar has been served with a show cause notice as he violated the code of conduct,” director of operations at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Zakir Khan, told AFP.Shoaib was withdrawn from Pakistan’s squad for last month’s World Twenty20 after being diagnosed with genital warts. He claimed the team management was conspiring against him and slammed the PCB for revealing the nature of his ailment, saying he had considered taking legal action against them.Under the terms of his central contract, Shoaib is not allowed to give interviews without the PCB’s permission or to criticise the team management. He has till July 31 to respond to the notice.Shoaib is already embroiled in a legal battle over a prior code of conduct violation. In April 2008, he was banned by the PCB for five years after lashing out at the administration on being denied a central contract. The ban was later reduced to 18 months by a PCB-appointed appellate tribunal, though he was also handed a fine of Rs 7 million (around US $84,000). The ban was temporarily suspended when he appealed to the Lahore High Court, and the case resumed in court on Monday. He has not been a regular member of the Pakistan side of late due to fitness and disciplinary issues. Shoaib was left out of the squad for the Sri Lanka series due to uncertainty over his fitness and he was not considered for the 30-man Champions Trophy pool either.

Paul Pogba was awful against Leicester

Manchester United fell to their third defeat in their last five games after Leicester City secured all three points with a 4-2 victory at the King Power Stadium this afternoon.

Teenager Mason Greenwood put the Red Devils ahead with a thunderous strike in the 19th minute, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s charges weren’t ahead for long.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans leveled things up just after the half-hour mark with a sensational floated finish before a frantic end to proceedings in the Midlands saw four goals scored in the closing stages.

A close-range finish from Caglar Soyuncu was cancelled out by a Marcus Rashford strike on his return from injury, but Jamie Vardy scored for the Foxes just 54 seconds later from Ayoze Perez’s cross and Patson Daka added a fourth for Leicester in stoppage time.

No United player performed to the best of their ability in a hugely underwhelming performance from the 20-time English champions, but one player arguably struggled more than most.

As per SofaScore, Paul Pogba was awarded a match rating of just 6.2 out of 10 for his disappointing display, the second-lowest total awarded to any player on the pitch.

When taking a closer look at the 28-year-old’s underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. Pogba won just four of his 15 duels (73% lost), committed a whopping six fouls and was dribbled past on three occasions, as per SofaScore.

The France international was equally out of form with the ball at his feet. As per SofaScore, he failed to have a shot on target, was unable to complete a single dribble and lost possession 12 times, illustrating his hugely ineffective display.

The Leicester midfield made up of Tielemans and Boubakary Soumare dominated the 6 foot 2 lightweight in the centre of pitch and were instrumental to the Foxes’ success.

After an impressive start to the season, Pogba let Solskjaer down against the FA Cup holders today; and with fixtures against Atalanta, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur coming up, the Norwegian will be hoping that his star midfielder returns to form soon.

Wolves suffer Trincao injury blow

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been dealt a major blow regarding the fitness of Francisco Trincao ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash.

What’s the latest?

According to a report by the Shropshire Star, the Barcelona loanee looks extremely unlikely to feature in Wolves trip to Aston Villa this Saturday, as the winger has fallen ill and, as a result, is currently completing an isolation period away from the squad.

The report continued to reveal that the 21-year-old – who was a late addition to the Portugal squad, replacing the injured Rafa Silva – returned a positive test for the global pandemic upon his arrival for international duty with Fernando Santos’ side, with his isolation period in Portugal due to end on Sunday – the day after Wolves’ clash with Villa.

Fans will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Trincao has been since joining Wolves on a temporary basis this summer, the news that the forward looks set to be unavailable for the trip to Villa Park this weekend is sure to have left fans gutted.

Indeed, while the £19.8m-rated man is yet to get himself on the scoresheet, or provide his teammates with an assist, in any of his six Premier League appearances for Bruno Lage’s side, the winger has nevertheless wowed at Molineux, taking an average of 2.5 shots, making one key pass and completing 3.2 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player John Ruddy dubbed an “assured” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Wolves’ joint eighth-best performer in the top flight this term.

As such, with both Lage and fans of the club undoubtedly hoping for a win against their West Midlands rivals on Saturday, the absence of the £140k-per-week Trincao is sure to come as a blow to all involved with Wolves.

Liverpool fans slaughter Neville claim

A number of Liverpool fans cannot believe Gary Neville has picked Harry Maguire over Joel Matip in a Manchester United combined XI.

The Reds take on their fiercest rivals at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, on what promises to be a great occasion.

Liverpool have been poor there in recent years, despite winning 4-2 in front of an empty stadium last season, and a big performance is required.

United are struggling at the moment, however, and victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men would put them seven points clear of the Red Devils.

On Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Jamie Carragher and Neville picked their combined XIs between both teams.

While they agreed on eight players, Neville opted to have Maguire alongside Virgil van Dijk, while Carragher chose the in-form Matip.

Rajasthan Royals to face Cobras ahead of IPL

The Rajasthan Royals, winners of the inaugural IPL, will take on the Cobras, champions of South Africa’s Pro20 series this season, in two Twenty20 matches ahead of the second season of the IPL. The two games are scheduled for April 11 and 12 and have been billed as the “Clash of Champions”.The Cobras have a strong line-up with several players with international experience, including Herschelle Gibbs, JP Duminy, Charl Langeveldt, Justin Ontong and Monde Zondeki.Rajasthan will make Cape Town their base during the run-up to the IPL’s second season, which runs from April 18 to May 24, following a strategic partnership with the Cobras and Western Province Cricket association, owners of the Newlands Stadium.”We are delighted to be working with the Cobras at Newlands during our IPL tournament preparation. It’s a great venue, and the “Clash of the Champions” over the Easter weekend will be an exciting contest,” Manoj Badale, chairman and co-owner of Rajasthan, said. “It is the first time the Royals have played since winning the IPL tournament and it will be great to see the team back in action.”Both teams have also agreed to work together on future cricketing and sponsorship opportunities to further sporting links between India and South Africa. Rangers dealt Goldson blow

Steven Gerrard has issued an update on Connor Goldson after he missed Rangers’ 2-1 win over St Johnstone.

What’s the latest?

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed that centre-back Connor Goldson missed the 2-1 win over Livingston as he is currently self-isolating.

Gerrard refused to put a timeline on his return , opting instead to simply say that he would love to have him available for selection.

He told the Glasgow Times:

“He is self-isolating. Time will tell (how big a blow it is).

“He has been an important player for us. He has been very crucial since day one for me.

“We would love to have him available.”

Concern

Rangers fans will be concerned by this update from Gerrard as he left out a couple of key details. Firstly, we don’t know if he contracted Covid-19 or is he isolating because he was in close contact with someone who did?

Gerrard is well within his rights to keep that information private, but it does keep fans in the dark.

If he has Covid-19 then it could cause him to be out for a longer period of time, especially if he is suffering with symptoms and takes time to recover.

This leads on to the second piece of missing information, as Gerrard refused to give a timeline on when he will be able to return.

Therefore, Rangers fans will be concerned about exactly how many games the £27k-per-week beast could miss. The centre-back is a key player for the club, as the above quotes from the manager confirm, and his absence against Lyon could be a blow for Gers.

Earlier this year, Gerrard lauded Goldson as a mountain and hailed what he offers on and off the pitch. He told The Scotsman:

“Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a warrior.

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen on the pitch but also his leadership on the inside of the club and his availability every single day.”

Rangers face Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday and now look set to be without Goldson, and Filip Helander, for the match.

The ex-Brighton defender, Goldson, was named in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Year last term, highlighting how important he is to the side, which is why his absence will hurt Rangers’ chances of picking up a positive result.

Villa beat Spurs to Caleb Chukwuemeka

Football Insider have dropped some new details behind Aston Villa’s swoop for Caleb Chukwuemeka in the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Late on in the transfer window, Dean Smith’s side completed a move for the 19-year-old striker, whose younger brother, Carney, is already at Villa Park.

Now, Football Insider have claimed that Villa fended off significant competition from fellow Premier League side Spurs to his signature. A source has revealed that the north Londoners were the favourites for his signing before Villa jumped in, having submitted a cash-plus-player deal.

But, in the end, “the offer of a lucrative professional contract from Villa, which saw him reunite with his younger brother Carney, proved too much for the teenage striker to resist. That was a blow for Spurs, who had been willing to pay a guaranteed sum rising to £1m with add-ons for Chukwuemeka.”

Villa fans will be buzzing

While signing a 19-year-old who is yet to make his Premier League debut may not sound like a big deal, the fact Villa beat a European competing side to Chukwuemeka says a lot about the progress the Midlands club have made.

They are now being seen as a really attractive destination, for young players in particular, and Chukwuemeka is the latest in a long line of academy talents to make the switch to Villa Park, following in the footsteps of the likes of Louie Barry and Lamare Bogarde to name but a couple.

In fact, Football Insider themselves said: “Villa’s ambition and financial muscle has held sway over multiple deals in recent windows and they spent big on teenage British talent this summer.”

As well as the obvious link and desire to reunite Chukwuemeka with his brother at Villa Park, there’s no doubting the potential he has on the pitch either.

Former Northampton manager Keith Curle was full of praise for the 19-year-old last year, saying: “Caleb has got an unpredictability about him and he can be unorthodox at times. What we’re trying to do is get the fundamentals in place in his play without taking away that excitement and that freedom in his play.”

So, not only do Villa get an exciting prospect who could go on to be a great player for them, but it also reinforces the belief that Villa are one of the rising clubs of English football under NSWE, and this latest update is sure to have fans buzzing.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has confirmed a major Aston Villa boost…

Leeds must start Dan James vs Newcastle

After falling to a defeat last time out in the Premier League, Leeds United will be hoping to pick up their first win of the new season when they travel to Newcastle United on Friday night.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side lost 3-0 to Liverpool, with Pascal Struijk’s red card for his challenge on Harvey Elliott the understandable talking point after the game.

However, the defeat meant that the Whites now linger only just above the relegation zone and desperately need a positive performance and result against the Magpies tonight to lift the mood.

One way in which Bielsa can do that even before the game is by starting new signing Dan James.

The Wales international arrived from Manchester United on transfer deadline day and has only been restricted to one substitute appearance thus far as Bielsa understandably looks to ease him into life at Elland Road.

However, with Rodrigo badly struggling at the start of this new season – here on FFC we’ve called on the Leeds boss to drop the Spaniard tonight – James might have the perfect chance to make his full debut for the club.

Speaking after the game against Liverpool last week, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan said: “He came into really tough circumstances in the game. We were fighting to get back into it and were down to 10 men, so it wasn’t the ideal circumstances to make your debut.

“But the glimpses we saw of him, he has good feet, good link-up play, he’s good at cutting inside. He is a top player all round. It was everything that we expected, that he showed at Man United during the time he was there.

“He looks like the type of player who will be perfect for Elland Road. He ticks a lot of the boxes that will make us a better team this season. We do play very direct and down the wings and the cut inside to link up with Patrick Bamford.”

His former Old Trafford teammate Andreas Pereira lauded the 23-year-old as being “explosive and so fast” in an interview with the club’s official website last season, and that level of pace and directness is something that the Whites could really do with as they look to get their campaign going.

His performances at Euro 2020 over the summer showed exactly why he could be a major thorn in the Magpies’ defence, averaging an impressive 2.5 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game – not only was he electric taking players on, but he also showed an impressive end product too.

The £43m-rated star could terrify Newcastle tonight at St James’ Park if Bielsa decides to start him.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star must be dropped tonight against Newcastle…
