Villa must land Brighton’s Yves Bissouma

Aston Villa must land Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma in the summer transfer window amid Lee Hendrie’s verdict.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Bissouma could be on his way out of the Seagulls this summer, with interested sides having to pay at least £40m to lure him away from the south coast.

And, speaking exclusively to FFC about Bissouma, former Villa ace Hendrie has suggested Dean Smith’s side should be in the conversation to sign him, and praised the midfielder for his ability.

He said: “I did a chat with myself and Paul Merson on Soccer Saturday a few weeks ago talking about Bissouma, and we highlighted what he actually does. I mean, his stats are absolutely phenomenal, the way he breaks the game up, his forward play.

“He’s got a good football brain. Like I said, when you’ve got someone who breaks the game up so well and can go join in and play, I’m inviting players like that to the football club.”

Gary Lineker loves him

Described as “very skilful”, former England striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker is seemingly a big fan of the powerhouse, hailing him as an “exceptional footballer” after a superb display against Everton just last month.

His teammate at Brighton, Dale Stephens, said: “He’s got the ability of perhaps a winger playing in central midfield with the way he can go past players. His feet are incredible and I’m sure he’s going to get better and better. He’s got everything you need to be a top player.”

Bissouma has previously been described as a “wonderful talent” by ex-Seagulls boss Chris Hughton, and when you look at his stats, it’s clear to see why he’s such hot property.

As per Whoscored, the Mali international averages just shy of three tackles per game in the Premier League (2.9), while he also makes 1.8 interceptions too – compare that to those in the Villa squad, and he’s simply far better, with absolutely no-one matching him in the tackling category, and only Matty Cash topping him for interceptions.

With his time in the Premier League, Bissouma would offer Smith the ready-made proven option that can hit the ground running at Villa Park, and it’s exactly why the club should be looking to muscle their way into the race to sign him this summer.

Newcastle confirm Wilson injury blow

Steve Bruce has been left facing a huge conundrum against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday with a return for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson considered unlikely.

The Toon boss confirmed that Wilson remains a doubt for this weekend’s Premier League affair at St James’ Park when speaking to the media on Friday, although he voiced hope in having Allan Saint-Maximin back.

Wilson has missed Newcastle’s last six fixtures after sustaining a deep hamstring tear during February’s 3-2 win over Southampton, which forced the £20m summer signing from Bournemouth out of the game late in the first half.

Newcastle are yet to win a top-flight fixture without Wilson since his arrival on Tyneside in September, with Bruce’s men succumbing to five defeats and three draws.

The Toon had landed a potential boost over the international break when Wilson hinted at a return on social media, after Bruce alluded to having the 10-goal centre-forward back available to face Tottenham. Those hopes have now been dashed, and Newcastle will likely host Spurs on Sunday without their top scorer to call on once again.

“I wouldn’t have thought so, no,” Bruce said in relation to Wilson returning to selection at home to Jose Mourinho’s north Londoners.

“He [Saint-Maximin] could be, yeah. We’ve still got two days to train, today and tomorrow, but he came through a big training session 48 hours ago, so we hope he’s a bit more advanced than Callum is. We hope he can play some part.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-newcastle-news%2c-gossip-and-views” title=”The latest Newcastle news, gossip and views!”]

Despite missing Newcastle’s last six Premier League fixtures and two earlier in the campaign, Wilson remains atop the scoring charts at St James’ Park with more than double the tally of second-ranked Miguel Almiron (4) and with nine goals more than any other striker.

Being without Wilson on Sunday will leave Bruce facing a huge conundrum over his attacking options, with ex-Magpies midfielder Rob Lee fearful of the consequences.

“If you haven’t got someone who’s a natural goalscorer scoring goals, you’re in trouble, you’re in trouble,” Lee exclusively told Football FanCast. “You look at all the teams down there and none of them have a natural goalscorer, none of them.

“They [the teams that are relegated] never do. Throughout the years, they never have a natural goalscorer. We actually have one, but he’s injured and it seems the whole of our team is based around him and how he plays. And we haven’t got a replacement and then we don’t have any players from midfield [who can score].”

Joelinton, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have each scored one goal in the Premier League this term, but neither have found the back of the net since Wilson’s injury.

Bruce will be well aware that Newcastle cannot afford to drop many more points with the northeast outfit only two points clear of the relegation zone, but they will likely struggle to steer the ship away from trouble while Wilson remains sidelined.

Gabby Agbonlahor slammed Joelinton following the Toon’s dismal 3-0 defeat to relegation rivals Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the international break, claiming that the Brazilian “hasn’t turned up all season” and is still not delivering in the black and white stripes.

However, Bruce has been pleased with Joelinton’s recent efforts, saying that the 24-year-old had his best game for the club against Aston Villa last month, having turned in a “terrific” performance.

Alas, no goals in 14 Premier League games raises question marks over Joelinton’s ability to lead the line against Tottenham, when Newcastle will likely be in trouble again unless they can find someone to fill Wilson’s goalscoring void.

AND in other news, Newcastle could save at least £8.5m by unleashing a £38k-p/w “life-saver” next season…

Everton’s Meret interest questioned

Italian journalist Carlo Alvino claimed on Canale 8, via quotes by Spazio Napoli, earlier this week that Carlo Ancelotti was never a fan of Alex Meret during his time in charge of SSC Napoli, so the Blues boss must not pull a full 180 and bring the goalkeeper to Everton.

Meret has been linked with a potential summer switch to Goodison Park by reports in Italy last weekend,  reports which claimed that Ancelotti has a strong interest in being reunited with the 24-year-old.

The opportunity for a potential reunion has arisen as Meret is thought to be considering his future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium following a battle for the number one jersey, and he could hand in a transfer request at the end of the season.

Meret has only been called on to guard the Napoli net for 12 of their 27 Serie A fixtures thus far this term, with ex-Arsenal shot-stopper David Ospina more often Gennaro Gattuso’s favoured option.

Reports by Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, also alleged that Napoli are working to extend Ospina’s contract, which has not eased Meret’s train of thought over a move away.

Meret intends to be the starting goalkeeper for whichever club he represents next season. But while Gazzetta dello Sport claim there is a 30% chance of that being Everton, Alvino has spoken about the doubts that Ancelotti had about the player in the past.

“Ancelotti didn’t bet on Meret; he wanted [Alphonse] Areola,” Alvino said. “[Sporting Director Cristiano] Giuntoli wanted [Bernd] Leno, then [owner Aurelio] De Laurentiis took Meret.

“It seems strange that Ancelotti is keen on Meret to take him to the Premier. I spoke to him about the boy, and he said: ‘As a goalkeeper, he has to be able to save’. Ancelotti was an old school coach.”

Ospina is claimed to be Gattuso’s favoured option at Napoli as the Colombian is better than Meret with the ball at his feet, although Alvino’s comments would suggest that Ancelotti also had doubt over the one-time Italy international’s ability as a shot-stopper.

If Alvino’s comments are true and Ancelotti harboured doubts over Meret’s talents when De Laurentiis sanctioned the Italian’s €22m (£19m) arrival in 2018, then the Everton boss must stay well clear of pulling a U-turn as the goalkeeper has not improved in the years since.

During Meret’s debut campaign at Napoli, he registered an 85% save percentage over his 14 Serie A appearances with 40 of 47 shots on target kept out. That dropped to 63% last term over 22 outings, with the £36,000-per-week talent only saving 46 of 76 attempts, per FBref.

It has been no wonder that Gattuso has often chosen to overlook Meret during the current season, either, with the former SPAL star saving just 35 of 49 shots on target faced, for a 69% success rate over his 12 appearances to date.

For comparison, Jordan Pickford – Ancelotti’s current number one at Everton – is saving 72% of shots on target over his 23 appearances in the Premier League, with 69 of 97 kept out, for the highest percentage of his time at Goodison Park so far.

If Ancelotti had doubts in Meret’s talents, that have seemingly not improved, then there should be no reason for the Italians to be reunited at Everton this summer.

Bull praises Coady’s form for Wolves

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who made 561 appearances for Wolves, believes Conor Coady would be the best option for England if they were to play with three centre backs.

Gareth Southgate made a number of big cuts to his latest England squad which saw Trent Alexander-Arnold, Michael Keane and Patrick Bamford all omitted from the final squad before the Euros this summer.

Keane, whose agent hit out at the decision to leave him out, had been included in a number of Southgate’s previous squads when he perhaps not playing as good as he has been this season for Everton, which has seen him achieve a 6.90 WhoScored rating, compared to Coady’s 6.51.

Speaking on how Coady is so good in a three at the back formation why he thinks the Wolves captain has been selected, Bull told FFC:

“You get in the England squad because of merit and what you’ve done for your club and Conor Coady has been a stalwart for Wolves.

“If England play with three at the back, then Coady’s the most sensible one to put there, however if we play with four at the back then he might get found out.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/exclusive-andreas-sondergaard-wolves-premier-league” title=”Exclusive! Andreas Sondergaard talks all things Wolves”]

“Why don’t we take both Keane and Coady then it gives you the option to play four or three at the back.”

Coady has been a late bloomer on the international scene, having only made three appearances for the Three Lions, however, he did get his first-ever England goal before his first Premier League goals for Wolves.

Despite being called up to the squad for the last squad and getting a goal against Montenegro, Keane will know he has a fight on his hands to earn a seat on the plane this summer.

Premier League preview: Predicted Wolves XI to face Leicester

Wolves have endured a diabolical period over the last couple of months.

Since Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull against Arsenal in November, they have won just four games.

Meanwhile, Nuno Santo’s men have kept only a solitary clean sheet in the Premier League since October. Fortunately, they returned to form in midweek.

It was a bizarre game of football as the Gunners had two players sent off and also conceded a penalty. Though, Wolves won’t care. All that mattered was returning to winning ways and they did that.

Though, there is no rest for the Old Gold who will face the visit of Leicester on Sunday. The Foxes have been sublime this term and heading into the weekend’s fixtures sat in third place.

So, how will Nuno choose to line-up?

With injuries plaguing Wolves at the moment, we’re tipping the manager to make just two changes to his team.

Jonny, Marcal and Rayan Ait-Nouri all missed out against Arsenal in midweek and it feels unlikely they’ll be fit enough this weekend.

Nuno revealed that the squad had injury troubles in his pre-match press conference before Daniel Podence took to social media on Saturday evening to claim he’d miss the next five to six weeks of action.

Consequently, the £90k-per-week Leander Dendoncker returns to the side.

He missed out against Arsenal with a midfield pairing of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves preferred. The former has been in poor form this term but scored his first goal of the campaign in emphatic fashion against the Gunners. He crashed home a long-range strike and thus, has to start alongside fellow goal scorer from that encounter, Neves.

Despite their problems at full-back, we think that Nelson Semedo should drop out. He’s been letting his team down for weeks and was at fault for Nicolas Pepe’s opening strike against Arsenal a few days ago.

Offensively, Semedo is vibrant, but when it comes to the defensive part of his game there are clear frailties, particularly in terms of physical strength. With that in mind, Ki-Jana Hoever could come into the XI.

We also reckon that the boss will favour Willian Jose ahead of Fabio Silva again in attack.

AND in other news, Wolves could finally axe Moutinho by signing “intelligent” £13m gem Keogh once bullied…
