Imagine him & Fabinho: Edwards must sanction bargain LFC swoop for 22 y/o monster - opinion

Maximilian Wober is one of the latest centre-backs to be linked with a move to Liverpool as the Reds potentially look to add defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window.

What’s the word?

According to Eurosport, Wober has emerged as a potential option for the Reds to pursue in the winter transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp is currently without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip who are all sidelined through injury, so it would be somewhat of a surprise if they didn’t add a centre-back to their ranks in the current window, considering their most recent fixture saw the German manager select midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson as centre-backs.

Imagine him and Fabinho

Wober has impressed with RB Salzburg since joining from Sevilla in the summer of 2019, averaging a superb 7.09 rating for his performances in the Champions League with the Austrian side last season.

The 22-year-old is well-travelled despite being so young, having already featured for Rapid Vienna, Ajax, Sevilla and RB Salzburg in his career thus far, so he would bring plenty of experience with him if he were to make the move to Anfield.

Considering Klopp has been forced to select one of the inexperienced duo of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips on numerous occasions so far this season, he would no doubt be grateful to sign someone such as Wober, who has experience playing in La Liga, the Eredivisie and the Champions League.

The 6 foot 2 defender could prove to be a great partner for Fabinho at the heart of Liverpool’s defence in the short-term, with WhoScored listing his strengths as passing and aerial duels, suggesting he could fit in well with the Reds’ defensive philosophy.

Wober is currently valued at just £8.1 million, suggesting that he could represent a fairly cheap alternative for Michael Edwards in the January transfer window and at just 22-years-old, there is still plenty of time for him to improve and adapt to Liverpool’s style of play.

Therefore, the Austrian U21 international certainly seems an option that Liverpool should consider as they look to find a solution to their current defensive injury crisis.

And, in other news… Bye-bye Phillips: Edwards must seal swoop for £16.5m “leader” likened to Vidic

Michael Olise the perfect Leeds United buy for Marcelo Bielsa

It wouldn’t be a deadline day without some drama at Leeds United.

The Whites have been linked to a plethora of players including Todd Cantwell and Louie Sibley, but now it seems as though they’re in the market for a new young star in the shape of Michael Olise.

The French U18 international has already made a big impact on the senior game despite only being a teenager. He has appeared 32 times for Reading, including four outings this season that have seen him rack up three goal contributions as the Royals got off to the perfect start to the season, picking up 12 points from a possible 12.

Olise certainly looks to be a talented player, and the fact that he has France U18 caps shows just how highly-rated he is, but aside from his talent, he has another quality that will make potentially make him a Bielsa favourite.

Olise is incredibly versatile being able to play as either an attacking or defensive midfielder as well as on either flank, and that is a trait that Bielsa values extremely highly.

Just look at how much Bielsa loves Stuart Dallas, the Northern Irishman can play in so many positions, anywhere across the midfield and at either full-back spot, and that versatility aided him towards starting 45 out of 46 games last season.

The £4.05m-rated ace is like an attacking version of Dallas, he’s a swiss army knife of a footballer who can be deployed in almost any attacking role as well as in the midfield.

At just 18 he’s a player that Bielsa could mould into anything he wants, and his offensive output so far this season certainly suggests that he has what it takes to become a Premier League player, with his one goal and two assists in four games helping Reading into the automatic promotion spots in the early knockings of the season.

Fulham need to get rid of Seri on deadline day

Fulham have a lot of work to do on deadline day.

The Whites’ Premier League campaign has got off to the worst possible start with four losses from their opening four games, and while incomings are absolutely vital for the Cottagers on Monday, one outgoing is equally as important.

Indeed, Jean-Michael Seri remains on Fulham’s books and with less than 24 hours remaining for the Whites to find him a new club, the clock is ticking.

To say that one of Fulham’s top priorities should be ditching a man who almost signed for Barcelona a few years ago sounds a bit strange on the surface, but if you’ve watched Seri since he came to Craven Cottage, you’d know exactly why he needs to go.

He’s reportedly on £65k-a-week, making him a huge financial drain, and he’s simply not good enough to forge a career in the Premier League, as shown by his shocking performance against Brentford in the Carabao Cup last week where he made a mistake leading to a goal and missed an absolute sitter against Championship opposition.

For £65k a week, you want a player who can make a huge impact, not a man who struggles against Championship players.

The Whites have had loan interest from both Galatasaray and Inter, but they’re prioritising a permanent sale rather than a loan move, but getting him off the books in any capacity is surely better than nothing at this point.

This could end up being more important than any centre-back deal that is concluded before the window closes, saving £65k-a-week on wages could give the Whites the financial power needed to bring their team up to the level needed to survive in this division.

Fingers crosses, Seri has at least one suitor lined up.

Transfers that shook the club: Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nuno Espirito Santo

In our Transfers that shook the club feature, Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at deals that had many may not have seen coming and the impact that they had during their time by using statistical data and pundit remarks.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo back in May 2017 was a bold move given that he had pedigree with European names like Valencia CF and FC Porto, and then decided to take on the job of managing the Midlands club in the EFL Championship.

In the 2016/17 season prior to his switch, the 46-year old guided Porto to second in the Primeira Liga, just six points off of Benfica. Nuno also took Porto through the UEFA Champions League group stages before eventually losing out 3-0 on aggregate to Italian giants Juventus, according to Transfermarkt.

To make the drop from Champions League to Championship football could have easily affected him, but the Portuguese manager did not seem fazed as he made sure that Wolves gained promotion in his debut campaign, finishing as champions on a rather impressive 99 points, nine clear of their nearest challengers, as per Sports Mole.

Upon his arrival, director Jeff Shi lauded him, claiming that he ‘was impressed by his football tactics’ (via BBC). Indeed, Nuno did not disappoint him in his first term, and went on to achieve arguably bigger things in the Premier League. WWFC finished in a highly commendable 7th place on 57 points having just come up, and qualified for the UEFA Europa League the following season due to their league position.

Still in European competition and going one better by staying in 6th position so far in the top flight table this campaign, the Molineux outfit could perhaps qualify for the Champions League, which would put the icing on Nuno’s cake.

It was a bold move to appoint him, but he has definitely shook Wolves for the better.

Wanderers, can you can qualify for the Champions League under Nuno? Comment below!

Whelan questions West Ham interest in Alfredo Morelos

Noel Whelan has said that West Ham United target Alfredo Morelos’ attitude remains in question, in an interview with Football Insider.

What does he say?

According to the Daily Mail, Rangers could be forced to part ways with Morelos this summer as they look to mitigate the impact of the suspension of the football season.

West Ham are one of the sides that are being linked with a move for the Colombian, who has scored 12 goals from 26 Scottish Premiership appearances so far this season.

Asked whether the Hammers should move for Morelos, Whelan warned that his attitude remained an issue.

“Talent and ability is not in question but attitude is,” he told Football Insider.

“West Ham have bought a lot of foreign players with the wrong attitude, that is what has let them down. They have spent a lot of money on players who have not got the heart and not got the desire and it is easy for them to jump ship when the seas get a bit rough.

“Hopefully, Morelos can be a better person at West Ham.

“It is one thing scoring 30 in the Scottish Premiership but can you do it in the Premier League. He is not going to be playing against Dundee United and Kilmarnock every week.

“He will be against world-class defenders week in, week out. That will be a massive test for him. We have seen him struggle to score against Celtic with good defenders and organisation.

“If they go out there and spend big money he needs to prove himself on and off the field.”

Transfer gamble

Morelos is a player with plenty of talent and one that has made a big impression at Ibrox since his arrival.

However, his disciplinary record is a real concern and with West Ham having faced issues in the past with players’ attitude, he might be one to avoid.

David Moyes is hoping to refresh the squad with young, hungry players that can form a new core and with that in mind, Morelos would have to prove he is willing to play the team game.

Glasgow Rangers: Gers flop Pedro Caixinha set for stunning return to football

Former Glasgow Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha is set to return to football as the manager of Mexican outfit Tigres.

The Portuguese boss is a record-breaker at Ibrox, becoming the club’s shortest-serving permanent manager when he was sacked after just 229 days in the hot-seat, and has been out of a job for just under a year after being relieved of his duties by fellow Mexican outfit Cruz Azul. Now, though, it is being reported by Tele Diario that Tigres, one of the biggest and most well-supported clubs in the country, could well give him the top job.

This is likely to shock plenty of the Gers supporters given his poor record north of the border where he won just 14 of the 27 games he managed. Indeed, BBC Sport’s Tom English described his reign as “a desperate mess from start to finish.”

But he does have good pedigree in the North American country. As manager of Santos Laguna, he won both the domestic league and cup, whilst he also finished top of the table with Cruz Azul.

It seems the move to Scotland was not right for Caixinha, despite him spending a fair amount of money on the likes of Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera. Still, he appears to have found the right place for himself on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
