With the league title all sewn up, one would imagine that Liverpool might take their foot off the gas for the remaining few games of the season.

While the Reds weren’t at their brilliant best during the 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday, the desire to win was still as strong as ever.

Unfortunately, that manifested itself in quite a negative way after the final whistle at Anfield as Andy Robertson was caught on camera giving the referee a dressing down, using some rather colourful language while lambasting the official.

With no crowd in the stadium, it was very easy to hear exactly what the Scot thought of David Coote’s performance on Saturday, and it’s fair to say that he wasn’t full of praise for him.

Robertson was clearly aggrieved that his side didn’t get a penalty in the second half, and he let his emotions get the better of him.

Understandably, the wider footballing world has taken issue with Robertson’s behaviour, with many calling for him to be banned, while others branded him as disrespectful.

The critics certainly have a point.

Football is an emotive sport, especially at the top level, but Liverpool have already won the league, and while this sort of reaction may have been slightly more justified had Coote’s failure to award the Reds a penalty have cost them the title, Roberston’s tirade just came across as immature and over the top on this occasion.

The left-back wasn’t the only man to confront the officials after the game.

The clip also shows Jurgen Klopp having a word with the referee, and while he kept his cool more than Robertson did, some viewers still weren’t happy to see the German talking to the officials, with many pointing towards other managers who’ve received sanctions for similar behaviour.

As quoted by the club’s official website, Lyon sporting director Juninho has confirmed Manchester United have first option on signing Memphis Depay.

What’s the word?

The Netherlands international was formerly a Red Devil, joining Louis van Gaal’s Manchester side back in the summer of 2015 for a fee in the region of £31m.

After struggling to really light up Old Trafford – he managed just seven goals and six assists in 53 appearances across all competitions – the 25-year-old made the move to French side Lyon in January 2017.

With his current contract with the club expiring in 2021, Juninho has provided an update on Depay’s long-term future at the club, confirming that United will have the first option if transfer interest in him hots up.

He said (as translated by The Daily Mirror): “Manchester United has the priority if several clubs line up to buy him. But we have not received any offers so far. He is really happy right now in Lyon. Rudi (Garcia) will soon make his decision. He is a technical leader. We will discuss an extension of contract by the end of the year.”

No second thoughts

He may have been an Old Trafford flop before, but Depay’s return to form with Lyon means that United simply cannot pass up on the opportunity to re-sign him if there is a bidding war. The Dutchman has played 130 times for the French giants, scoring 50 goals and providing a further 42 assists.

Reports in recent weeks and months have claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are intent on securing a striker in the upcoming January transfer window, with the likes of Mario Mandzukic and Callum Wilson thought to be high up on the shortlist. But whilst Depay has predominantly played from the left at Lyon, he has shown in his time up front that he can also be devastating there too.

He has 15 goals and seven assists in 38 games from the centre-forward role, and his underlying numbers means he could be the perfect Solskjaer signing. Pacy, direct and versatile – the kind of attacker who would fit seamlessly in with the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Daniel James. This season, Depay has averaged 3.9 shots, 1.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per game in Ligue 1.

It all means that if opportunity does knock, then United simply cannot hesitate to take up their first option on him.

Even though they were linked to a number of different targets already, it seems that Real Madrid won’t be splashing the cash in the upcoming transfer window, as per new reports coming from AS.

As we approach the opening of the January transfer window, rumours start pilling up.

Of course, Real Madrid are definitely one of those clubs but it seems that Florentino Perez, their president, has decided to “cancel” the winter market and skip it entirely, giving Zidane the chance to make something out of the squad they assembled last summer.

And even though this Real Madrid team does need reinforcement in certain areas, this should be seen as a positive because it could give the Frenchman a chance to solve one of his key issues of the ongoing campaign.

Finding the perfect formula

Zidane and the troubles of finding his starting XI are nothing particularly new.

After all, this issue seems to be a persisting one that has haunted the Frenchman ever since the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign.

And unfortunately for Real Madrid, it’s something he still hasn’t been able to solve to this day.

In fact, the game against Galatasaray in the Champions League saw the Frenchman use his 12th unique lineup in as many games the Galacticos played until that point.

Clearly, injuries and suspension have played a part in that but it’s still quite a big problem.

Adding new players to that squad mid-season, however, could potentially unbalance it even more.

But with Zidane getting a full season to work with the players that he already has at his disposal, he should have enough time to find the perfect formula he’s been searching for all along.

After all, the Galacticos have spent quite a lot of money on signings already and there is definitely quality in that squad.

Getting them to gel and dance to Zidane’s tune are the details that are currently missing and that sort of thing cannot really be fixed with new people joining them.

If anything, that would make the Frenchman’s job that much more difficult at this particular point in time.

So looking at it from that point of view, this transfer update might still be a blessing in disguise for Los Blancos.

Let’s see if Zidane can make the best of it.

One such ace was Junior Firpo, a newcomer to the team that was finally given a chance in the side.

With that game against Celta Vigo, the young full-back now has a total of just 324 minutes under his belt.

But needless to say, he embraced this opportunity with both hands and fully repaid Valverde’s trust.

Many Barcelona fans swarmed Twitter with their messages of support for the young defender and simply showered him with praise.

One fan even compared Firpo to Eric Abidal, a Blaugrana icon from back in the day, and there were even shouts of him starting ahead of Jordi Alba.

Tottenham Hotspur chief Daniel Levy wants to offload Serge Aurier in January, however he does not feel confident he will get the figure he wants for him, according to a report by Football Insider.

The Ivorian has struggled to make an impact in north London since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and the Spurs hierarchy are ready to sever ties with him.

However, Levy does not expect the club to recoup the £23m they spent on him and expects to make a significant loss as they are keen to get him off their wage bill.

Aurier has had a torrid time at Tottenham since joining the club and, despite having been given an opportunity to potentially prove his worth to the club, it does not appear to be getting any better for the Ivorian.

Having only made 45 appearances in his time as a Spurs player, the 26-year-old has gone on to play four matches across all competitions this season, however he has come in for some criticism regarding his performances.

He was heavily slated for his display against Southampton after he was shown a red card inside the opening 30 minutes, whilst he also drew negative reactions in the drubbing they suffered against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Indeed, Aurier raised questions about his Tottenham future recently as he revealed he wanted to leave in the summer – as well as mentioning that he did not feel there was any competition at Spurs for his place in the side.

Indeed, Aurier does not look to have done himself any favours with his antics and it certainly does not come as a surprise to hear that Levy wants to offload the Mauricio Pochettino misfit as soon as he can.

However, the Tottenham chief is going to be right not to be confident about being able to recoup their money for the Ivory Coast international, as the right-back is not showing any signs that he is worth the £20m+ that the club will likely be looking for.

Leeds United’s Ben White was linked with a move to Liverpool last weekend but Darren Bent believes a gradual rise to the top level is the best thing for the defender’s development.

What did he say?

The Brighton & Hove Albion loanee has adjusted to life at Leeds with ease and has already made a big impression on the support since joining in the summer.

Reports emerged linking the 21-year-old with a £20m switch to Anfield, but the former England international thinks it would be too much of a step up at the current time.

Instead, Bent argues he would be better suited to playing regularly at Leeds or his parent club, suggesting he has a lot of time ahead of him so there is no need to rush things.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “What he needs to do, don’t worry about Liverpool, go back to Brighton and nail down a spot there first. Rather than jumping six, seven levels – you’re talking about trying to move (Virgil) van Dijk and Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

“It’s always brilliant being linked with the top four but concentrate on your football first. You never know, Leeds might get promoted, you’re comfortable there, you’re solid there, you could move there (permanently) and then move on from there (in the future).”

Bent’s view may be born from his own career trajectory, joining Premier League Charlton after impressing in the second tier for Ipswich, but White has shown adaptability consistently in his short career, playing his way up through the divisions to establish himself in the Championship, so he could feasibly make another jump.

Ready to step up

White had big boots to fill upon joining Leeds as Pontus Jansson departed over the summer, but he has dealt brilliantly with the pressure and shown composure and an assuredness in his defending which makes him suitable for the Premier League.

His WhoScored average rating of 7.3 in the league is evidence of that, as is the fact he has been a consistent pick under Marcelo Bielsa.

Added to that, Noel Whelan described him as a player who is “destined for a top-four side”, praising his decision-making and suggesting he is “very capable on the ball”, so fits both the Reds and the Premier League as a player who “ticks every single box”.

He clearly has the talent and ability, and if Liverpool feel his development would be best aided by capturing him early then they should definitely try to sign him.

They did the same with Joe Gomez when he was only 18 and breaking through at Charlton, and he has proved a success – progressing into a regular first-team player for both his club and England.
