Wouldn’t want him back: Leeds fans slam Jack Harrison transfer report

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Manchester City have placed a £20m value on attacker Jack Harrison, who spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Leeds United.

And fans of the Yorkshire outfit have laughed off suggestions that their club could cough up that amount for the 22-year-old in this summer’s transfer window.

Harrison was a regular for the Whites during the recent season, turning out on 39 occasions in the Championship, including in both legs of their playoff semi-final with Derby County.

The Englishman contributed four goals and four assists during the regular season, in addition to one assist against the Rams in the playoffs.

The attacker certainly had his moments for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

However, the Leeds fans are simply not interested in their club moving for the versatile winger for anywhere near the £20m being quoted by The Sun.

The two most important things Dean Smith said at yesterday’s press conference

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa will look to make it six straight Championship victories when they come up against former manager Steve Bruce and his Sheffield Wednesday side at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Midlands outfit’s chances of securing a top six finish looked to be slipping away just a couple of months ago, but now they are in the top six – although they are still in a precarious position given their 11th-placed opponents at the weekend are currently four points adrift of them.

Villans manager Dean Smith spoke to the press on Thursday prior to the trip to Yorkshire, and these are the two most important things he said.

Jack Grealish – before and after

When asked about how Grealish is getting on in the role of skipper since his return from injury, the former Brentford boss said:

“He appeared to be a lot more mature than my perception of him [before arriving]. He’s thrived on it. His performances have shown that.

“Off the pitch as well he looks like he’s really enjoyed taking on that responsibility and leadership.

“I think it’s made him a more rounded person as well.”

It is no surprise that Smith had that pre-conception about the 23-year-old given the stories we have seen in the press previously, but there is no doubt that he has been a real talisman for their winning run – handing him the captain’s armband could be the manager’s smartest decision since he was appointed.

Alan Hutton, James Chester and Tommy Elphick are back

Villa have been missing some of their key experienced first-team pros in recent weeks, but Smith confirmed that the aforementioned trio are now back in training, and pushing for involvement during the run-in.

The 48-year-old said: “Alan Hutton’s running, James Chester’s running and Tommy Elphick’s running so we’ve got those three looking to push forward as well.

“I’m hopeful that all three will feature this season. They’ve all been knocking on my door wanting to be involved and that’s the position I want to be in.”

While those three may soon be available, they face a tough task getting into a backline where the likes of Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause have been so strong in recent weeks.

Newcastle fans share thoughts on Javier Manquillo’s display against Leicester

[ad_pod ]

Javier Manquillo has received some strong criticism in his time at Newcastle since joining in the summer of 2017 from Atletico Madrid. The Spaniard made 21 Premier League appearances last season and was shaky at best.

This season he has made just 9 starts for the Toon and his defensive stats are very similar to last season, averaging 1.5 tackles per game compared to 1.7 last term, the same amount of interceptions and 2.4 clearances per game compared to 2.3.

So, by looking at the stats he is still the same as last season, but on Friday he had a very solid game dealing with the threat of Harvey Barnes and then Marc Albrighton – although he could have give away a penalty when he tugged back Youri Tielemans late on.

The 24-year-old has managed to register two assists for the Magpies this season, however passing to Fabian Schar before he unleashes a 30-yard screamer is hardly splitting a defence open.

He represents the lack of investment in Newcastle’s squad as he should not be the back-up option for any Premier League club, never mind for a club as big as Newcastle.

Despite this though, he did play well against Leicester – although the performance hasn’t sat well with everybody. Here’s a look at what fans have been saying about Manquillo’s latest display on Twitter…

Alan Brazil claims Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy facilitated subsequent failures

[ad_pod ]

Controversial talkSport pundit and former Manchester United striker, Alan Brazil, has suggest Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy is responsible for the failures of recent years at Old Trafford.

What’s he said, then?

Forgetting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as it’s too early in his permanent reign to judge him, United have had three full managers since Ferguson’s departure, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

It would be kind to say that all three reigns didn’t pan out the way everyone wanted them to as the club would have to wait six years for their first title race in the post-Fergie era – all were deservedly sacked in the end.

Here’s what Brazil had to say on them in his Sunday Post column:

‘Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy has been a millstone around Davie Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho’s necks.

‘It dragged them all down and out of Old Trafford.’

Blaming SAF is simply ludicrous

Blaming Ferguson for the failures that followed him is simply ludicrous as the finger needs to be pointed solely at the three managers.

The legacy that the 77-year-old left in Manchester should be seen as a blueprint the trio could have followed, not something that haunted them and caused them to slip up.

Each gaffer had the perfect example to draw inspiration from, someone who had spent 27 years with the Red Devils winning everything under the sun.

The fact that a so-called pundit would pick him out as the catalyst for anything that goes wrong at Old Trafford is frankly unbelievable.

Barcelona eye surprising move for Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal may lose Nacho Monreal to Barcelona this summer, per Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness).

The defender is being eyed as a potential back-up to current first-choice left-back Jordi Alba.

What’s the word?

Monreal will be out of contract in the summer, per the report, and Barca are interested in the potential of a free transfer this summer.

The 33-year-old has been something of a utility man this season, regularly featuring as both a centre-back and a left-back.

He has made a total of 16 Premier League appearances thus far in 2018-19 but Barca are said to be exploring the possibility of securing the veteran star come the summer.

Monreal is said to be aware that he will not be a guaranteed starter at Camp Nou but he is willing to take a back-up role behind Alba.

The Spaniard spent the entirety of his career in his native country before his move to Arsenal, playing for Osasuna and Malaga.

He has also won 22 caps for his country.

A worthy farewell

Monreal has been an exceptional servant to Arsenal, making over 230 appearances for the club and winning three FA Cups.

However, he is approaching the twilight of his career and one has to feel that it is time for the Gunners to say goodbye.

That Barcelona are interested says a lot for Monreal’s talents and he deserves the chance to choose his next destination.

As it is, it looks unlikely that he will remain in north London and that is likely to have a two-pronged effect for the Premier League side.

Firstly, they will be able to reinvest at left-back and bring in a young, promising talent, while also being forced- to say farewell to a classy operator.

Between The Lines: Mowbray sends warning to Blackburn players

[ad_pod ]

Blackburn Rovers produced a woeful first half performance against Middlesbrough at Ewood Park on Sunday. Boro were good value for their 1-0 half-time lead, courtesy of a Britt Assombalonga strike. Despite a second half improvement, Rovers couldn’t overturn the deficit and slumped to their fourth consecutive Championship defeat.

After the game, Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray gave his verdict on his side’s first half display.

What he said

As quoted by the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray was damning in his assessment of his team’s performance.

The 55-year-old said, “I didn’t recognise many of them first half I would have to say…We didn’t compete, I’m not sure where it came from.”

Mowbray acknowledged that his side showed more spirit and quality after the break, but the game was lost in the opening 45 minutes, “we nearly sneaked something in the second half which was much better, but the first half we don’t see want any performances of that level ever again.”

Rovers are currently 14th in Championship and probably safe from relegation fears, but Mowbray must arrest his side’s dismal run of form soon. His comments after Sunday’s defeat indicate the frustration he is feeling with his squad.

What he meant

Mowbray’s words can be considered as a warning to his squad. The likes of Jack Rodwell and Corry Evans need to improve. There is some talent in this Blackburn squad, but they aren’t showing it.

Mowbray will hope that his public condemnation of their first half display elicits a positive response from the group.

In the opening period against Middlesbrough, Rovers didn’t manage a single shot on target and were penned back in their own territory for much of the half. In a home game, that simply isn’t acceptable. Mowbray’s words need to have their intended effect, for the sake of the remainder of Blackburn’s season.

The Chalkboard: Why do Newcastle persist with Joselu up front on his own?

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United fell to another demoralising defeat on Saturday, as they were beaten 2-0 by Watford in the FA Cup fourth round.

The Magpies are 17th in the Premier League and now have no chance of lifting silverware this season, while they have also yet to invest in the January transfer market.

On the chalkboard

Benitez picked a rotated XI against the Hornets, naming Joselu as his lone striker.

The 28-year-old has scored three goals this season, the last of which came in the FA Cup third round victory over Blackburn Rovers. His other two came in August, in defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Perhaps he was picked on the back of his display against Rovers, but there is little about Joselu that marks him out as a first-choice centre-forward.

Check out the video below for Emma Conybeare’s rundown of which clubs need what in the January transfer window…

Salomon Rondon is first-choice at St James’ Park, and he has netted six times already this season. Indeed, he did not play in the FA Cup and now will not get the chance.

Benitez could well be politicking, choosing to play games as he attempts to convince Mike Ashley, the club’s tight-fisted owner, to finally dip into the transfer market this month.

The Magpies have roundly failed to add to their squad and The Telegraph has reported that the former Liverpool boss will leave if Ashley does not sign two players before the deadline.

Desperate times call for desperate measures

If Benitez really did play politics with the FA Cup, supporters are sure to be furious.

Joselu is not, and has never been, a first-choice striker in English football.

During his spell with Stoke City, he scored just four goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

Never has a stronger message been sent to a boardroom; playing the player so ill-suited to a role that Benitez may well have sent ten men out to face Watford.

And, yet again, Newcastle will not be winning any silverware this season.

It is not Joselu’s fault, of course; he has been told to do a job and continues to try to do his best, but he finds himself at the centre of an apparent power play.

It remains to be seen if that will pay off and whether we will see any new faces arrive at St James’ Park in the next few days.

Wolves fans react to Mourinho comments

Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled off a stunning scalp on Sunday afternoon to bolster their chances of playing in Europe once again next season.

Nuno Santo’s side clinched all three points in a five-goal thriller against Tottenham Hotspur in north London to overtake them into sixth place.

Spurs twice held the lead in the first half before Raul Jimenez popped up with the winner in the 73rd minute with a coolly slotted finish.

Jose Mourinho’s post-match comments, as relayed by The Athletic’s Tim Spiers, has riled some members of the Wolf Pack on social media.

Here’s what has been said…

Plenty slammed the Portuguese boss’ comments, claiming he was a “bad loser” who was “salty” while one supporter claimed he was “predictable”.

Mourinho was also labelled as “classless” as well as a “fraud.”

Some others wondered why he said such a thing considering his players got away with similar things to Ruben Neves – Serge Aurier and Ben Davies both committed three fouls, which was more than the Wolves midfielder per SofaScore.

The previous head-to-head at Molineux earlier in the season was also referenced with one supporter brandishing it “karma.”

There was even an accusation that the Spurs players purposely tried to disclose Adama Traore’s shoulder.

And then some fans compared the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager to his fellow countryman Nuno Santo…

A further member of the Old Gold faithful said Mourinho was the “anti-Nuno” whilst another claimed the Wolves chief was indeed the ‘special one’.
