West Ham: Fans react to journalist’s update on Irons’ failed Patson Daka pursuit

West Ham had hoped ‘to finish’ a deal for Red Bull Salzburg forward Patson Daka before the striker opted to join Leicester instead, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The marksman caught the eye with a number of impressive performances for the Austrian club during the 2020/21 campaign as they won the domestic league title and competed in the Champions League group stage.

The 22-year-old Zambia international netted 34 goals in 42 appearances in total for Salzburg last term, and his strong performances hadn’t gone unnoticed heading into the summer transfer window.

West Ham were rumoured to be keen on reaching an agreement to land Daka’s signature as they soughtto add depth to their attacking options ahead of the 2021/22 season, but the player revealed that he has chosen to pursue a move to Leicester instead, which will come as a hugely frustrating update to the east Londoners.

The Irons finished sixth in the Premier League last term, just one place behind the Foxes, and will be eager to pick up where they left off when they take on Newcastle in their opening match of the 2021/22 season on 15 August.

Newcastle takeover consortium on Benitez

A source from Newcastle United has dropped some insight on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium after news emerged of Rafael Benitez’s move to Merseyside.

The Lowdown: Benitez wanted

Liam Kennedy, who has been following the whole takeover saga closely, has claimed that Rafa Benitez is wanted by the potential owners-in-waiting to return to the North East should a deal between Mike Ashley and the KSA group be pushed through, as he helped bring them to the table in the first place.

However, the former Liverpool manager is set to be appointed at Everton, meaning that it is now very unlikely he will return to St. James’ Park.

The Latest: Consortium insight

As per Football Insider, the KSA consortium are ‘devastated’ that Benitez is set to be appointed as the new manager at Goodison Park.

A source from the Tyneside club has told the news outlet that his appointment is ‘devastating for the consortium’, after they were previously told that the Spaniard was keen on a return to the Magpies.

The Verdict: ‘Devastating’ indeed

It is certainly ‘devastating’ not just for the consortium, but for the Toon Army as well, that Benitez is set to be appointed as the new Toffees boss.

Many NUFC fans have previously called for him to come back, and so he would have certainly been a popular appointment to take over from Steve Bruce, and would have been a good way for the consortium to immediately get fans on their side.

Benitez also has a vast amount of experience in managing in the Premier League, and his overall CV is certainly very impressive, a coach who would have been perfect in taking Newcastle into a new era.

Forest handed boost over Joe Worrall

Nottingham Forest have been handed a boost to their hopes of keeping Joe Worrall at The City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Lancashire Live, who claim that Burnley are preparing a £12m offer for Stoke City centre-back Nathan Collins, who is also said to be attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, in the coming weeks.

The report goes on to state that Sean Dyche’s side still have a number of other potential centre-back targets on their radar, including Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall, although Collins now appears to be the Clarets’ first choice for the position this summer.

Hughton will be delighted

Despite Nottingham Forest having something of a season to forget last term, Worrall nonetheless impressed with his performances from the heart of the Garibaldi defence.

Over his 31 Championship appearances, the 24-year-old helped his side keep 12 clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.1 interceptions, 0.8 tackles, 4.2 clearances and winning 3.5 duels per game.

The £3.6m-rated defender also posed a threat going forwards, scoring one goal and registering one assist, as well as making an average of 0.3 key passes per fixture.

These returns culminated in Worrall earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.94, ranking him as Hughton’s fifth-best performer in the second tier.

As such, with the 62-year-old undoubtedly looking to build a side this summer that is capable of a much more respectable finish in the Championship next time around, retaining the services of the player whom Steven Gerrard dubbed a “leader” is sure to be high on his list of priorities.

And, with it looking as if Burnley have turned their attentions away from the £10k-per-week Forest star, it seems as if the 24-year-old may well be playing his football at The City Ground next season – for now, at least.

Watford handed boost in De Paul pursuit

Watford have been handed a huge boost to their hopes of bringing Rodrigo De Paul to Vicarage Road this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to The Mirror journalist David Anderson, who claimed in a post on Twitter that Leeds United are now no longer in the race for the Udinese Calcio midfielder, who is reported to be a target of the Hornets this summer.

However, a report by Tutto Atalanta would suggest that there still remains a great deal of interest in the £34.2m-rated man in the upcoming transfer window, with the outlet claiming that practically all of the big Italian sides have enquired about De Paul.

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how impressive the 27-year-old De Paul was for Luca Gotti’s side this season, the news that Watford are now facing less competition in their bid to bring the Argentina international to the Premier League is likely to have fans buzzing.

Over his 36 Serie A appearances this term, the £31k-per-week man scored nine goals, provided nine assists and created 20 big chances, in addition to making an average of 2.3 key passes and completing 3.4 dribbles per game, seeing the midfielder earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.53 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the Italian top flight.

Indeed, when comparing De Paul’s direct involvement in goals to those of the Watford players this season, only Ismaila Sarr’s return of 13 strikes betters the midfielder’s haul of nine, while no Hornets player bettered the Argentine’s nine.

As such, it would appear a highly advisable move for Cristiano Giaretta to do all he can to tempt the man – whom Udinese’s technical director Pierpaolo Marino dubbed a “tireless worker” – to Vicarage Road this summer, as the addition of De Paul would certainly boost Xisco Munoz’s side’s chances of retaining their status as Premier League side come the end of next season.

Diego Laxalt to never play for Celtic again

This summer is a crucial one in the history of Celtic Football Club. After such a dismal campaign, they will see a number of their players walk through the Parkhead exit door, never to return.

Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer are prime candidates for a departure but the Hoops must also address the exits of a number of loanees.

What’s the word?

Celtic used the loan market wisely this season to fill gaps in their squad.

Jonjoe Kenny replaced Jeremie Frimpong at short notice in January while Diego Laxalt succeeded the selfish Boli Bolingoli at left-back.

However, it doesn’t look as though we’ll ever see Laxalt in a Celtic shirt again.

The Hoops were pondering a £7.2m move for the Uruguayan but due to his form in the final weeks of the season, they’ve decided against a permanent switch.

That’s according to Il Milanista (via Sport Witness) who reveal the Bhoys have performed a U-turn on the defender.

They suggest that Milan were ready to negotiate a deal with Celtic but the Glaswegian side abruptly changed their mind right at the end of the season.

Consequently, Laxalt will return to Italy in time for the next campaign.

Fans must be elated

This news is likely to go down incredibly well with the fan base at Paradise.

They’ve not had much to cheer about this season but seeing Laxalt walk out the exit door will be a welcome sight.

At points, he’s looked the full package for Celtic. It’s not often you’ll sign a player from one of Europe’s elite clubs with plenty of international caps.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Unfortunately, he’s not lived up to his full billing consistently enough. From a defensive point of view, he’s been incredibly abject.

Laxalt has been impressive going forward but when it comes to actions inside his own half, there is a lot to be desired.

The full-back was run ragged by Lawrence Shankland in the 0-0 draw with Dundee United before Joe Aribo left him dazed and perplexed during their Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers.

As they crashed out to their biggest rivals, the Uruguay international was described as a “horror show” by ACSOM host Paul John Dykes.

It was easy to see why. He was caught up the field as Aribo burst forward for Rangers’ opening goal and then was beaten all ends up for the second strike.

The Gers winger took up possession and twisted this way and that before leaving Laxalt for dust.

With Greg Taylor and then Adam Montgomery usurping him in the pecking order during the final weeks of the season, it will come as no surprise to see the left-back depart.

He has been disappointing for a number of months now; supporters will be all too pleased to see him depart for good.

AND in other news, Celtic chiefs must be grinning from ear to ear after exciting £70m claim…
