Leeds: Derby interested in Tyler Roberts

It seemed like the immediate future of Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts was sorted after Phil Hay said both the player and the club were happy with him staying at Leeds. However, new reports claim Derby County have not given up on signing him this month.

The latest on Roberts

Derby and four other sides in the Championship have been linked to Roberts in the last month. The Athletic provide the latest update as they report that the Rams have not given up on bringing the Wales international to the Pride Park Stadium on a loan deal.

Journalist Ryan Conway stated that the Rams are ‘looking to strengthen their attacking options’, and that Roberts is ‘a possibility’.

Should Leeds hold onto the attacker?

As the transfer saga around the forward continues, it is worth questioning whether the Championship is more suited to Roberts as he has only played 265 minutes of league football this season (Transfermarkt). The fact he has been seen on the pitch so rarely seems to have left the Rams hoping they can still lure him to a place he will get more playing time.

He is definitely rated by Marcelo Bielsa however. The Argentinian was questioned about Roberts role at the club recently, saying this month (via Leeds Live): “When Tyler has been available he’s always been in the 18-man squad. I don’t ignore there’s a 20-man squad, but I say 18 because it reiterates his importance.”

Therefore it might be better for the club to keep hold of the 22 year-old, as he can improve best under Bielsa. He also provides some important squad depth during the pandemic, which has seen plenty of players across the league miss periods of time.

Klopp will be frustrated with Naby Keita’s latest injury setback

Jurgen Klopp will surely be frustrated with Naby Keita following his latest injury setback and it may well be time the German manager cashes in on the Guinean midfielder.

Since joining from RB Leipzig for £48 million in 2018, in what was a club-record fee at the time it was agreed, he has suffered a number of injuries that have prevented him from ever really enjoying a long-run in the first-team.

The 25-year-old went off injured in the recent 3-0 win against Leicester City with a muscle complaint, with Klopp bemoaning his side’s injury problems following the game, saying:

“It’s a tricky situation and when Naby goes off with a muscle injury you know the problems will not get smaller. The boys know when they are allowed to train with us they have the quality to do so, we don’t give tickets for training, you have to qualify with talent and aptitude. It is a tough school, there a lot of steps to go.

“We have to make sure we recover but the Naby injury didn’t help at all.” (per Goal)

In his two years with Liverpool, Keita has made 68 appearances for the first-team, contributing seven goals and four assists in that time (per Transfermarkt).

Considering the number of injury issues facing Liverpool at the moment, Klopp could have really benefitted from having a senior member of his side such as Keita fit and available for what will be a busy Christmas period.

Therefore, his recent injury will be the cause of much frustration for Klopp and perhaps the Guinean international has now run out of chances at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk is a big fan of the midfielder, praising him in an interview with the club earlier this year, saying:

“Naby is a fantastic guy, he works so hard and he is an outstanding football player. We see it week in and week out. He has unfortunately been unlucky with some injuries, but hopefully, he can stay fully fit for the next season.

“I think he is world-class if I’m absolutely honest. I see all the moments when he has the ball, the smart moves, the smart intelligence. It’s just incredible to see and I’m very happy for him.” (per Liverpool FC)

However, his performances this season have been below par, with him averaging a disappointing 6.43 rating across his five Premier League appearances this season (per WhoScored).

Therefore, when you consider his poor performances, as well as his less than impressive injury record, you wonder whether Klopp may decide to axe the 25-year-old in January, as he has arguably let his manager down when he needed him most.

Aston Villa eye move for former loan star Tammy Abraham

Aston Villa’s striking problems could be resolved with a stunning move for one of their former players if fresh reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to the Daily Mail, Dean Smith has eyed up a swoop for ex-loan sensation Tammy Abraham with him set to fall down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Timo Werner.

However, it is thought that the 22-year-old wants to stay with the Blues and try to fight for his place but don’t write it out of the equation completely just yet as there is still over a month to go in the transfer window.

Villa’s ownership duo Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens are prepared to back their manager in the market following a £140m spree last summer.

Proven at Villa

With negotiations continuing to rumble on for Brentford talisman Ollie Watkins, an audacious move for Abraham does make a lot of sense as he’s been there and done it at Villa Park already in his career.

And Smith could potentially offer him something that Frank Lampard cannot – that being a starting spot in attack.

Wesley and Mbwana Samatta both have struggled with the physicality of the Premier League having scored just seven goals between them all season, so there’s no denying that a new forward should be high on the priorities this summer.

Abraham was a hit during Villa’s promotion season. He provided 26 goals and three assists as Smith steered the Midlanders to a playoff final victory over Derby County.

The Villa boss labelled the 22-year-old striker a “handful” and “a hell of a talent” soon after being appointed at Villa Park whilst BBC’s Garth Crooks has lauded Abraham as an “outstanding” talent.

Clearly, the former loan star wants a fair crack in west London but never say never. He’s now valued at a whopping £36m by Transfermarkt, so he wouldn’t come cheap either.

AND in other news, Watkins? Grealish? Here’s how Dean Smith’s XI may look after the summer window…

Chelsea: Blues could have Kai Havertz boost as Juventus close in on Jorginho

Chelsea could be closing in on a deal with Juventus who are interested in taking Jorginho off their hands this summer.

According to Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), the 28-year-old is no longer viewed as a first choice option for Frank Lampard and the Italian giants are hawking his situation. Juventus are reportedly thinking ‘seriously’ about making an official move for the midfielder.

A report from June stated Jorginho is ‘willing to leave’ the London outfit in search of pastures new. Since the Premier League restarted, the Italy international hasn’t played a single minute of football under Lampard.

Calciomercato have reported that Jorginho would command a fee of about €50million (£44.5m) with three years still left on his current contract. However, due to the current financial climate, Juventus could chisel the asking price down to a more affordable amount.

With Ross Barkley performing well since the restart and Mason Mount a favoured choice of Lampard’s, it seems there’s no room for Jorginho in the current Chelsea midfield. Particularly with the heightened interest in Bundesliga star Kai Havertz.

The Blues are looking to make a move happen to bring the German ace to Stamford Bridge, with Roman Abramovich himself getting in touch with Havertz to convince him to sign (via Express). However, Bayer Leverkusen aren’t budging on his mammoth £90m asking price so Lampard and Co will need to find the funds from somewhere.

Offloading Jorginho – who hasn’t made much of an impact this season – would essentially be easy money towards a transfer target they really want. The 28-year-old has made just six goal contributions in the Premier League this season (via Transfermarkt), but it seems that ex-Blues manager Maurizio Sarri could be willing to pay a decent fee to take him back to Italy.

Lampard seems to be transitioning this Chelsea side into what fans will hope is a title-challenging team, the addition of Kai Havertz along with Timo Werner would really boost their chances of silverware next season. The club should do what they can to raise the funds and make a move for Leverkusen’s star happen.

What’s your take, Blues? Should Chelsea keep or sell Jorginho this summer? Have your say in the comments below!

Arsenal: Gunners interested in signing Ajax winger Quincy Promes

Arsenal continue to be linked with several players during the current transfer window and one of those rumours involves a winger from the Eredivisie.

According to The Sun, Mikel Arteta has identified Ajax winger Quincy Promes as one of the players he wants in his rebuild of the Gunners’ squad.

The Spaniard is hopeful of the club being able to make an offer for the 28-year-old in the region of £25m, with fellow Premier League side Liverpool said to have been interested in the player previously.

The Dutch attacker had a very impressive 2019/20 season in all competitions for Ajax, as he has made 28 appearances, including five in the Champions League, and scored 16 goals whilst supplying four assists, via WhoScored.

This was indeed an impressive return and his attacking threat is further highlighted by his match statistics, as he averaged 2.7 shots and two key passes per game, via WhoScored. Also, at the age of 28, he may well be in the peak of his career now.

However, this transfer does not make any sense in Arsenal’s current situation, as Arteta has emphasised his fear of the club not being able to make a plethora of signing this summer as they are struggling financially, per BBC Sport.

The attack is also arguably the position where they have the most depth, as they have eight players who can either play at centre-forward or in the wide attacking areas. Therefore, irrespective of the quality of Promes, the move would not be a sensible one for Arsenal to make at this moment in time.

Gunners fans, would you like to have Promes at Arsenal or should other positions be prioritised? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Leeds fans hail Liam Cooper’s commanding display

Whilst Ben White has been one of the real stand-out players for Leeds this season in the eyes of the club’s supporters, Liam Cooper has also enjoyed a fine campaign at the heart of the defence.

The Whites skipper has made 34 appearances in the Championship alone, and is closing in on captaining his side to Premier League promotion this year.

And against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon, the centre-back was once again in imperious form, marshalling the back-line and ensuring Marcelo Bielsa’s side walked away from the game with a 3-1 victory.

As per Sofascore, his 79 touches of the ball was the highest of any Leeds player, whilst he also won six of his 11 total duels too. And after seeing his performance, Leeds fans flocked to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Leeds fan hailed Cooper for being a proper captain and “leading by example”.

One supporter really showered Cooper with praise, claiming that he is the “most underrated Leeds player in recent memory”, and that he was perfect against Blackburn.

With 194 total appearances for the club, the 28-year-old is well and truly part of the furniture at Elland Road, and has proven himself to be reliable figure for the Whites over the years.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage over The National article about new Linfield kit

Linfield and Glasgow Rangers supporters appear to have plenty in common.

The ‘Gers are historically known as a Protestant club, in contrast to Celtic’s mainly Catholic background, whilst Linfield come from Belfast’s Protestant community. However, whilst the fans of both teams quite clearly have a connection, the clubs are in no way officially affiliated. Indeed, the teams from Glasgow and Belfast have never met in a competitive fixture.

The National’s James Morgan, though, believes that they may be quite closely connected. Linfield’s new kit, which is a mainly purple shirt with an orange stripe through the middle, has received criticism for its resemblance to a 1912 Ulster Volunteer Force flag. However, Morgan has somehow managed to link this to the ‘Gers, warning the Ibrox side that they must heed the lessons from this episode.

Many Ibrox supporters are livid with the article, as they believe the issue has nothing to do with them – one fan even called it a “disgusting and bitter article”. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.
