West Ham fans flock to Lingard update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing over an ExWHUemployee update involving forward and target Jesse Lingard.

The Manchester United ace, who was heavily courted by West Ham in the summer, opted to remain at Old Trafford in a bid to fight for his place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, as Lingard’s minutes fail to rack up, murmurs have started to emerge again regarding his future and there is a consensus that West Ham could make another move in January.

According to reliable club insider ExWHUemployee, the Irons could reignite their interest mid-season and make a move for Lingard during the winter window.

It is even thought that he would be interested in joining West Ham and Lingard’s own brother has made it clear he enjoyed his time at the club and misses it there.

Flocking to this update on the 28-year-old, it’s safe to say lots of supporters are excited at the prospect of re-signing Lingard and it’s little wonder given his phenomenal loan spell at the London Stadium last year.

If David Moyes is to maintain West Ham’s fantastic 2021/2022 season run, signing the England international in January could be a big move if they can get it done.

Ashraful ton charges Bangladesh to easy win

A disciplined bowling performance restricted Zimbabwe to a below-par 207 before Mohammad Ashraful led the chase with a breezy ton to help Bangladesh clinch a facile win in the first ODI in Bulawayo

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera09-Aug-2009Bangladesh 211 for 2 (Ashraful 103*, Tamim 63) defeated Zimbabwe 207 (Vermeulen 92) by eight wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Mohammad Ashraful scored his third one-day hundred•Associated PressA disciplined bowling performance restricted Zimbabwe to a below-par 207 before Mohammad Ashraful led the chase with a breezy ton to help Bangladesh clinch a facile win in the first ODI in Bulawayo. Mark Vermeulen hit a fluent 92 on his comeback after five years but didn’t find much support from his team-mates.On an easy-paced track, Bangladesh didn’t have any problems against the weak Zimbabwean attack. Ashraful built on a good platform laid by Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique; he never looked in any problem and took a special liking to the left-arm spin of Ray Price. In the 15th over, bowled by Price, he hit four boundaries including a handsome six over long-on.It was an imperious performance as he moved down the track and backed away outside leg stump to force errors from Price. The best shot was a neat inside-out lofted drive over extra cover off Price. He also played some delightful shots to the seamers, the highlight of which was a neat swivel pull off Hamilton Masakadza. He brought up his third ODI hundred with a delicate late cut off Mazakadza. It was his day; not only did he pick up a wicket off the first ball he bowled but also brought up 3000 ODI runs.Ashraful’s task was made easier by the brisk start provided by the openers. Tamim started off with two fours in the first over – a cut and an off drive – but it was Siddique who started off like a runaway express against Chamu Chibhaba. He hit three successive off-side boundaries in the second over, a caressed cover drive being the highlight, and followed it with two successive boundaries in the fourth over before hitting one straight to mid-off.Prosper Utseya introduced spin as early as the sixth over, bringing himself on, but neither he nor Price could pose any problems as Tamim and Ashraful eased themselves with several classy drives and cuts. The victory was set up earlier by some disciplined bowling from the Bangladesh. Only Vermeulen resisted the disciplined attack with a degree of comfort. He has a troubled past and last played for Zimbabwe in 2004 but today put on a pleasing show as he caressed his way to a fine half-century. His best shot came in the 12th over against Nazmul Hossain when he stood tall to play a punchy cover drive, one of the many off-side shots he hit. Vermeulen has been always strong off the back foot and today was no different. He repeatedly rocked back to punch the ball on either side of the square. There was a delicate late-cut boundary against Shakib Al Hasan which stood out in his play against the spinners. He was a touch lucky to survive a palpable shout for lbw when Shakib rapped him on the pads with an arm ball and he was also dropped by Nazmul at deep midwicket off the same bowler. However, Vermeulen shrugged it off and proceeded to look comfortable against spin and seam. Post fifty, he grew more cautious and proceeded to deal in singles and looked set for a hundred when he was run out eight runs short of the landmark.Bangladesh dismissed Zimbabwe for 207•Associated PressThere wasn’t much support from his team-mates barring, to an extent, Brendan Taylor. Taylor started off with a flicked four but the shot of his stay was a firm cover drive for three against Syed Rasel. He nudged his way around and was beginning to build a partnership when he was adjudged lbw against Shakib when he perhaps got an inside edge.Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling fetched them two early wickets. Rasel induced an edge from Masakadza in the first over with a delivery that shaped away while Nazmul coaxed Chibhaba into nicking behind. Elton Chigumbura threw his bat in the end to get some handy runs in the batting Powerplay but Zimbabwe fell short of a competitive score.

Villa’s Cash should be fit for Arsenal

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash should be available for selection against Arsenal after sustaining a minor injury at the weekend, Ashley Preece says.

The lowdown

Cash started against Wolves on Saturday and played 79 minutes before he was substituted, with Ashley Young coming on in his place.

Manager Dean Smith revealed after the game that he’d been forced off with a dead leg.

Cash is a mainstay of the Villa side, with his Wolves injury threatening to disrupt a 100% Premier League starting record.

Going by WhoScored metrics, the 24-year-old has been his side’s third best player so far this season.  Nobody in the squad has made more tackles per 90 minutes.

Cash, incidentally, ranks in Villa’s top-six earners with a reported weekly salary of £65,000.

The latest

Addressing supporters in a Birmingham Live fan Q&A, Preece wrote: “[I] expect Matty Cash to shake off a dead leg for Arsenal on Friday.”

Meanwhile, an update on the fitness of winger Leon Bailey is expected in Dean Smith’s press conference on Thursday.

The verdict

This will surely come as a relief to Villa supporters. Young would have been able to deputise, but it’s clear that Cash is one of Smith’s most trusted lieutenants.

And they need to muster a response on Friday night against a 12th-placed Arsenal side, having conceded three times in 15 minutes in a dramatic late collapse after Cash’s withdrawal on Saturday.

If Bailey is available for selection too, they’ll probably fancy their chances.

Tottenham transfer news on Sadiq

Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly eyeing up a move to try and sign towering striker Umar Sadiq.

The Lowdown: Sadiq on form

Sadiq is a player on form and full of confidence, scoring six goals and making a further three assists in just eight games in La Liga 2 for Almeria so far this season (Transfermarkt).

He is well on course to beat his very impressive stats from last term in the division, when he scored 20 times and supplied seven assists in 37 matches in total (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Tottenham interest

As per Fichajes, Spurs have now been following Sadiq through a Big Data consulting company, and receiving reports of his performances.

They see the striker as a potential replacement for Harry Kane, but he currently has a release clause of €60m (£51m).

However, Almeria would reportedly be happy to sell him for €30m (£25.5m), thus presenting the North London club with a potential bargain.

The Verdict: Not a replacement

Although Sadiq does play in a lower division, his goal scoring record should certainly not be sniffed at.

With a six-foot-three-inches frame as well, the Nigerian should have little problems in adapting to the physical nature of the Premier League, and would offer Nuno Espirito Santo’s team a threat in both boxes.

If they can get the 24-year-old for £25.5m, it could turn out to be a real bargain in the future, but his inexperience at the highest level would make it a risk to bring him in as a direct replacement for Kane – perhaps he can be the deputy the Lilywhites have been searching for?

South Africa to host IPL

South Africa has edged out England to be named host nation of the 2009 IPL. The decision was made after a meeting between the IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, and the Cricket South Africa chief executive, Gerald Majola, in Johannesburg on Tuesday

South Africa has edged out England to be named host nation of the 2009 IPL. The decision was made after a meeting between the IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, and the Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive, Gerald Majola, in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The IPL also announced that a final schedule for the 59 matches and the host venues for the eight franchises will be released shortly.Cricinfo understands that the IPL’s opening ceremony will be held in Cape Town, and that the defending champions Rajasthan Royals will play the first game. The tournament will commence on April 18, a week later than initially scheduled, and a day after the one-day series between South Africa and Australia ends. Sources said Johannesburg, Durban, Centurion, Port Elizabeth, East London and Cape Town would be the host venues. However, it’s understood that negotiations between the two boards were not as smooth as it was initially expected with England remaining in contention as an active alternative for hosting the IPL during most of Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.South Africa had been considered the favourite to host the IPL’s second season after IPL officials voiced concerns over the effect England’s springtime weather might have on the tournament. England also faced issues in the form of cost, scheduling and the likelihood of conflict between television rights holders. South Africa’s chances were further boosted after the country’s government got actively involved in wooing the IPL, throwing in assurances on security and speedy clearance of visas for players and officials.”A lot of factors were considered by us while evaluating the final choice for the host venue,” N Srinivasan, secretary of the Indian board, said. “However, in the final analysis I think it was the South African weather, which prevailed and tilted the balance in favour of the Rainbow Nation.”David Collier, the ECB chief executive, said he understood the hurdles that would have had to be cleared to stage the tournament in England. “We all recognised the difficulties and logistical issues involved in areas such as security when the G20 is meeting in the UK next week and the climatic challenges,” he said.In the event, the IPL’s decision to move to South Africa has been greeted with relief by the league’s franchises and players. Muttiah Muralitharan, who plays for Chennai Super Kings, said it was the right decision for the league because “the game must go on, else cricket would die”.Why South Africa got the nodThe weather was the most important factor. The IPL realised that rain could seriously affect “as many as 70% of the matches” if the tournament was held in England.Top officials within the South African government and Cricket South Africa gave assurances that the IPL will receive the full red carpet treatment.Less logistical problems as South African domestic season concludes before the IPL’s scheduled start while in England the county season will just get underway. The cost of running the tournament in South Africa would be substantially less than in England.Supersport owns the rights both for the IPL and for international cricket played in South Africa while there would have been a clash between Sky TV and Setanta in England.Vijay Mallya, the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore, said that though he would have preferred England, the weather had proved a decisive factor. “To be honest, I would have preferred England to South Africa,” Mallya said. “You could have taken one good flight from 5-6 places in India to England and it would have been cheaper. Besides, an average Englishman loves his cricket. The stands there would have been full of crowd. I guess weather conditions clinched the issue for South Africa. In England, there were chances that matches would have been rained off. Both teams sharing the point affects the competitiveness of the event.”There had been much speculation as to where the IPL’s second season would be based after Cricinfo identified South Africa as a possible destination last Friday. Senior officials from the IPL and CSA denied the report at the time, but had since been locked in intense discussions to finalise the unprecedented switch. With the decision now made, the real work begins. Security arrangements – which forced the tournament out of India – will need to be arranged, and an estimated 400 players and officials will require visas and accommodation. In all, 59 matches will be held over a five-week period ending on May 24.With time of the essence, logistical issues delayed the opportunity for a considered response from the ECB, whose chairman, Giles Clarke, and Collier, had been on opposite sides of the world in Australia and Guyana respectively, when contacted by IPL officials on Saturday. The pair reconvened for the first time at Lord’s on Tuesday morning, by which stage discussions with CSA were well underway.”It is very important for world cricket that this tournament is staged, but ultimately it is a matter for the BCCI where it is staged,” Clarke told Cricinfo hours before the IPL decided on South Africa. “We’re happy to help, but if it’s not staged here, we’ve got a great deal to do this season anyway. That is how we see it. It is not a competitive situation from our point of view, at all. It can be staged here, the government is keen support it, but the most important thing is that this tournament goes ahead, wherever it is staged.”England had initially emerged as the preferred venue to host the tournament after a powerful lobby within the BCCI and the Indian team management felt that such a move would help in preparing for the World Twenty20 in June.

Pundit reacts to Phil Hay reveal about Leeds United

Noel Whelan has revealed his excitement over Leeds United’s proposed expansion plans at Elland Road amid Phil Hay’s recent £250m claim.

What’s the story?

During a Q&A for The Athletic, Hay revealed that the club are completely committed to redeveloping Elland Road and increasing the capacity there, even suggesting that those inside the club feel it could bump up the annual revenue over £250m.

And now, in response to that news, Whelan has revealed his excitement about Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s future.

He said: “This would be huge. The demand for tickets at Leeds means everything is sold out. Even for League Cup games, you’ve got 36,000 there and that just shows the strength of the fanbase and the excitement around the club at the moment.

“It’s a massive step forward, for revenue through tickets and sheer strength in numbers with the support. If they increased the capacity to 55,000, they would sell it out week-in, week-out – there’s no doubt about it.

“The other part of it is the possibility of holding World Cups and European Championships in this country – you want the stadium to be part of hosting these games. It’s another step forward and another progression for the club.”

Leeds United’s ambition

With a current capacity of just over 37,000, Leeds have the 11th biggest stadium in the Premier League, behind the likes of Everton and Aston Villa – if their plans to make it a 55,000 seater come to fruition, then that would see them leapfrog a number of big clubs, including that of Liverpool and their home of Anfield.

While a larger stadium isn’t necessarily a guarantee of greater times or success – you only have to look at the likes of Arsenal and Spurs to see that in recent years – it is another major statement of ambition.

As Whelan says, a bigger home could lead to more opportunities both on the pitch and off it, especially in terms of a financial venture. Spurs for example have their agreement with the NFL and hosting games on their turf, pulling in some extra eyes and money from that deal.

If Leeds are to make that next step, then repurposing Elland Road to match their Premier League status and ambition is key, and it’s something that is sure to excite their loyal fans.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Wolves transfer update on Caleta-Car

A reason has been revealed as to why Wolves did not end up signing Duje Caleta-Car during the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bid made

As per L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), the Midlands club were keen to sign Caleta-Car on Transfer Deadline Day, and put in a bid of €18m (£15.5m) to Marseille for his signature.

However, a deal never materialised in the end, and the central defender has ended up staying at the Ligue 1 side.

The Latest: No deal

According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Caleta-Car was not excited by a move to England, as his partner had given birth to their first child just last week.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria tried to find a way to sell the Croatia international, and received another offer from Valencia, but he was not interested in a move to Spain either.

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that the Molineux faithful missed out on signing Caleta-Car, as he would have given them that extra bit of quality in their backline.

Described as a ‘quality’ player by his centre-back partner Alvaro Gonzalez back in November, the £22.5m-rated ace was such a key player for his side in Ligue 1 in the 2020/21 season, winning no fewer than 3.7 of his duels per game, while he also averaged 3.9 clearances and 1.3 interceptions per match, keeping five clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

Standing at a mammoth six-foot-four-inches tall, the 24-year-old would have certainly given Bruno Lage’s team a threat in both boxes, but now they may have to wait until January before they can try to sign him again.

Everton fans react to Luis Diaz goal

Reported Everton summer transfer target Luis Diaz was on target for FC Porto as they drew 1-1 with reigning Primeira Liga champions Sporting Lisbon on Saturday night.

Nuno Santos had put Sporting ahead, but with 20 minutes remaining, the Colombian picked up the ball in the top left corner of the penalty area, cut inside two challenges and curled his shot into the bottom right corner to equalise for Porto.

It was his third league goal of the new season following earlier strikes against Maritimo and Belenenses.

Everton’s interest in Diaz

Everton tried to sign the left winger during the summer transfer window as part of a deal which would have seen compatriot James Rodriguez head to Portugal, but the latter’s wages proved to be an insurmountable stumbling block (via Carlos Aleman).

It remains to be seen whether the Toffees will revisit their interest in the £22.5m-rated 24-year-old in a subsequent transfer window.

BT Sport posted a clip of the goal, and here’s what some Everton supporters made of it.
