Preece makes Villa claim about Philogene-Bidace

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered his verdict on the future of Aston Villa starlet Jaden Philogene-Bidace.

What’s the story?

Writing initially on Twitter, he said: “Let’s talk about Jaden Philogene-Bidace. He’s far too good for 23s football as we all witnessed this week. A piece looking at his sensational form as he bids to make his mark at #avfc in PL. Includes a nice snippet from @PeteSmith1983.”

Then, in a follow-up article for The Birmingham Mail, he added: “To those inside the Villa circle, Philogene-Bidace is a serious talent with a bright future in B6 with head coach Dean Smith promoting the Londoner to first-team training at the beginning of last season.

“It’s crystal-clear that Philogene-Bidace remains highly thought of at Bodymoor Heath, his challenge now now is to stay patient and be ready when called upon.

“A Championship loan move could well be in the offing in January but, as it stands, Villa have a serious talent on their hands, one who’s primed and ready to make his mark in the Premier League.”

Exciting times for Villa

Make no mistake about it, Villa have somewhat of a golden generation on their hands coming through at Bodymoor Heath.

The likes of Philogene-Bidace and Carney Chukwuemeka in particular are leading the charge of youngsters who are looking to make their mark on the Premier League, and have already been given a taste of the action by Dean Smith.

While Villa have added to their wide ranks with the signing of Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia in the summer, Philogene-Bidace has got plenty of time on his hand at just 19-year-old to eventually stake his claim for a starting spot at Villa Park.

Whether that’s sooner or later remains to be seen, but whatever the case, Villa fans will surely be buzzing at the kind of exciting talent they have on their hands in Philogene-Bidace.

Exclusive: Ex-Everton star drops surprise transfer window verdict

Ex-Everton star Michael Ball was disappointed with the club’s transfer window despite their fine start to the season.

The Toffees have been impressive under the management of Rafael Benitez thus far in 2021/22.

They have taken 13 points from their opening six games, only being beaten by Aston Villa, and they are subsequently sitting fifth in the Premier League table.

However, Everton kept their powder largely dry when it came to spending money in the summer, instead relying on free transfers to strengthen the squad.

Demarai Gray was the only player who came into the club for a small fee, with the other signings Andy Lonergan, Andros Townsend, Asmir Begovic and Salomon Rondon all coming in on frees.

As a result, Ball does not think that the club have enough quality and depth in their squad, as they look to enjoy a successful first Premier League season under Benitez’s management.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “The transfer window has proved where we are right now. The quality and depth in the squad is just not there.

“There’s players there that have been knocking on the door, wanting opportunities and they’ve let themselves and the manager down, and they’ve let the fans down numerous times.”

Ele é diferente no aspecto técnico.

Dane Scarlett: Tottenham’s rare diamond

Tottenham Hotspur gem Dane Scarlett could have a big future in north London and he may well play a part during the 2021/22 campaign.

The 17-year-old academy prospect has now played five times for the senior side, including 90 minutes against Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying stage.

His form for the young Lilywhites has certainly caught the eye, having bagged three goals in six appearances at U23 level, on top of an impressive 23 goals and four assists for the U18s, via Transfermarkt.

Spurs fans have every right to remain cautious but Scarlett is a talent they should be hugely excited about.

For every Harry Kane, there is a Cameron Lancaster, but the teenage sensation is different. He’s something special and under Nuno Santo, he could well become a first-team star.

Given the 28-year-old’s arduous transfer saga in the summer and reports suggesting that the new head coach wanted to play two up-top, Scarlett could soon see his game time increase at the club, particularly as they still remain in all domestic and European competitions.

Rotation will be key and Kane remains their only senior centre-forward, so it would not be a surprise to see more of the emerging Hotspur Way prodigy throughout the current campaign.

Scarlett became the youngest-ever player to feature for the north Londoners last season and he’s someone that former manager Jose Mourinho regularly praised in the press.

After an assist off the bench in their Europa League clash with Wolfsberger AC, the ‘Special One’ told BT Sport (via The Athletic):

“He is a diamond, a kid with incredible potential. He has worked many times with the first team and that gives him a different personality. He is still 16, 17 soon (in March) and I believe next season he will be a first-team squad player because he has a lot of talent.”

Scarlett has even drawn comparisons to Marcus Rashford, who Mourinho managed at Old Trafford, so this sort of analysis shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“He is going to be a fantastic player and I hope everything around him goes well. He is a striker, a number nine, I have been playing him from the sides similar to Marcus Rashford and he is very clever,” he added.

It’s not every day that a promising talent of this nature comes up through the Spurs system. He is one rare and exciting prospect that should have the Lilywhites faithful super excited to see more.

This season could well be Scarlett’s time to shine.

AND in other news, £14.4m-rated dud’s Spurs days are surely numbered after Nuno’s latest major call…

Netherlands women to play domestic cricket in England

Netherlands women have followed in the footsteps of their counterparts in Ireland and will participate in England’s domestic county championship in 2009

Cricinfo staff29-Jan-2009Netherlands women have followed in the footsteps of their counterparts in Ireland and will participate in England’s domestic county championship in 2009. With Scotland having been part of the fixtures since 2007, the tournament will now feature three of Europe’s leading sides.Netherlands and Ireland have been placed in the newly created fifth division though they will be competing in separate sub-divisions. Scotland are higher up in the third division. The 50-over competition format for 2009 will run from May to September and have more home and away matches for the 24 teams in the top four divisions.Clare Connor, the head of England’s women’s cricket, was confident the ECB’s structure would help Ireland and Netherlands enhance their performance. “I want to support our European neighbours to enable them to climb the ODI rankings and it seems to me that with more regular, competitive opportunities we can genuinely help them do this. I do not want to see Irish and Dutch women’s cricket get left behind in the global rankings by the growing Asian nations who are playing more and more cricket.”Richard Hobsworth, the ICC regional development manager, said the two teams’ inclusion in English domestic cricket was a boost to the women’s game in Europe. “This will allow each team to participate in regular competitive fixtures outside of their own countries; an environment which will progress their development enormously.”

النصر السعودي ينتظر قرار تشافي بشأن لاعب برشلونة

Liverpool linked with Declan Rice move

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing West Ham and England midfielder Declan Rice next summer, along with a number of their rivals.

The Lowdown: Rice impresses for club and country

The 22-year-old has emerged as an impressive midfielder in recent years, standing out as a key man for both the Hammers and the Three Lions.

Rice helped West Ham qualify for the Europa League last season, while he also reached the final of Euro 2020 with England, starting every game in the tournament.

The Latest: Liverpool linked with move

According to 90min, Liverpool are keen on the idea of signing the Englishman next summer, at a point when Jurgen Klopp may be looking to freshen up his midfield.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are also reportedly interested, however, so the Reds could face a fight to sign Rice.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-2/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Potentially overpriced?

While the £63million-rated Rice is a good young player – Chris Sutton hailed him as an ‘outstanding talent’ this week – whether or not he would justify a likely huge price tag is up for debate, considering he hasn’t yet shone at the very top level for an extended period.

Not only that, but in Fabinho, Liverpool already have someone who masters the No.6 role, so it is hard to see how the England man would fit into the team unless Klopp opts to use two out-and-out defensive midfielders.

It feels more likely that Rice will end up going to one of the other Premier League high-fliers, given their penchant for spending big sums of money on players compared to the Reds.

Saints should reignite interest in Dickie

Southampton were heavily linked with centre-back Rob Dickie in 2020, and after a phenomenal start to the season with QPR, Ralph Hasenhuttl should consider bringing him to St Mary’s as a replacement for Jannik Vestergaard.

What’s the word?

Both Southampton and Leeds United were linked with a move for Dickie during his time at Oxford United but he would join QPR later that summer, and he has been a star performer for the Loftus Road outfit during his time at the club.

Last season saw the 25-year-old win QPR’s Supporters’ Player of the Year award, as he made 43 appearances in the Championship, averaging a very impressive 7.17 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Should Southampton sign Dickie?

He has started the new season in remarkable fashion, scoring in each of QPR’s games against Millwall, Leyton Orient and Hull City, earning the man-of-the-match award from WhoScored in all three of their games so far this season.

The centre-back’s average rating of 8.62/10 currently ranks him as the Championship’s second-best performer according to WhoScored, which suggests that he is more than ready to make the step up to the top flight, and he could be a great replacement for Vestergaard in Southampton’s back four.

Whilst his impressive start to the season is likely to elevate his price, Transfermarkt currently values Dickie at just £2.25m, which suggests that he could be a cheap, homegrown option for Southampton to consider this summer.

QPR manager Mark Warburton was full of praise for the centre-back last season, saying: “He’s getting better, Rob. He’s a young guy, has done very well and is still learning.

“He’s a very talented defender and there’s a lot more to come from him.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Saturday’s defeat highlighted Southampton’s need for centre-back reinforcements, and if Dickie could maintain his start to the season in the Championship with the Saints, he would surely prove to be a superb addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Is this Wolves’ ideal Traore replacement?

Wolverhampton Wanderers are limited with their spending this summer but if they sell some of their best players, we could see a hefty spree in the remaining weeks of the window.

Bruno Lage hasn’t had it easy since becoming the new manager but the arrival of Trincao has provided reason to be excited.

On the chalkboard

One player who could leave Wolves this summer is Adama Traore.

The Spaniard has long been linked with an exit from Molineux with Leeds United one of the sides interested in securing his services.

He only scored twice in the league last term but is one of the most electrifying players in the Premier League on his day.

His speed is unrelenting and his dribbling is absolutely dazzling. In 2020/21, Traore completed 4.1 dribbles per match, the highest tally by any player in the English top-flight.

Therefore, if he does leave the Midlands, it would be a huge loss to Wolves’ chances heading into the new campaign.

The solution

Trincao’s dribbling ability should act as a solid remedy to Traore’s potential departure but they could really make moves to replace him by signing Romain Faivre.

Wolves were linked with the Brest winger this week courtesy of reports in France and if they acquire his services, they’d have a real gem on their hands.

Capable of playing on either flank or even through the middle, he is electric in possession of the ball and beats players for ease.

In Ligue 1 last season, Faivre managed 2.5 dribbles per match. It’s someway down on Wolves’ dazzling Spaniard but he is an incredibly rare breed when it comes to that facet of the game.

Described as an “elegant player” by Steve Mounie, the attacker would also bring plenty of goals and assists to the table.

The 23-year-old has found the net 13 times in his senior career, six of which came last season. On top of that, he accumulated five assists.

His manager, Olivier Dall’Oglio is another effusive in his praise for Faivre. “He’s comfortable on the ball, and fast in possession, he’s got great vision too,” he began.

“He’s got something special. He rarely loses the ball, he can break through the lines by dribbling, and his passing creates so many chances for us,” Dall’Oglio continued:

On that evidence, he’d be an excellent signing for Lage, one that could really help them to replace Traore.

Hasenhutttl makes Saints transfer claim

Despite kicking off the new Premier League season with a 3-1 defeat against Everton on Saturday, it seems as if Southampton are planning on making just one more signing this summer after Ralph Hasenhuttl shared the club’s transfer plans.

What’s the word?

According to Hampshire Live, Hasenhuttl is planning for just one more new addition to his squad before the transfer window shuts – a centre-back to replace Jannik Vestergaard, after his move to Leicester City earlier this month.

Journalist Tom Leach wrote in a recent piece for Hampshire Live, that:

“Southampton have just one piece on transfer business to do between now and the end of the month, with a central defender who can play as a number six (defensive midfield) considered to be the ideal target.”

Do Southampton need more signings?

Southampton have signed six players so far this window, with Theo Walcott, Romain Perraud, Dynel Simeu, Tino Livramento and Adam Armstrong joining on permanent deals, whilst Armando Broja has arrived on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Of those, only Walcott is over the age of 24, which suggests that Hasenhuttl is sticking to his transfer plans of signing younger players, although you could argue that the Saints now have a very inexperienced squad, especially when considering the departures of Ryan Bertrand and Vestergaard.

Last season saw the Saints struggle immensely due to injury problems and a serious lack of squad depth and you worry that could be the case once again this season, especially when considering the options Hasenhuttl has in defence.

Only new signing Perraud is a natural left-back, with Moussa Djenepo featuring there regularly in pre-season, which seems a very risky move by the Austrian, and Saints fans would be less than happy if the Malian was forced to play there in the Premier League should the Frenchman be missing.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Although signing a quality centre-back, who can also play defensive-midfield, would undoubtedly improve the squad, you feel that Southampton need more than one new addition to the squad if they are to comfortably avoid relegation this season.
