Warner appointed Sunrisers captain

Australia opener David Warner will lead Sunrisers Hyderabad in the eighth season of the IPL. Warner and Sunrisers tweeted the news from their official accounts, but the management did not elaborate on the reasons.Warner will be the fifth player to lead Sunrisers and the third Australian to lead a franchise in IPL 2015. George Bailey is the captain of Kings XI Punjab while Shane Watson will lead Rajasthan Royals for the second season in a row.Warner, who joined Sunrisers only in 2014, made an instant impact finishing as the tournament’s fourth-highest run-scorer with 528 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 140.80. Still he could not swing the fortunes of Sunrisers, who finished sixth overall. It was a tough second season for Sunrisers, who made their IPL debut in 2013 after Deccan Chargers were terminated. Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan was appointed captain in 2014 but failed to provide stability at the top of the order. Since he was battling for form and consistency, the team management decided to elevate West Indies allrounder Darren Sammy to take over the captaincy for the second half of the tournament. But Sunrisers continued to flounder which probably prompted the franchise to have a re-think.Sunrisers had bought Kevin Pietersen in the auction last month for Rs 2 crore (approx $330,000) but with question marks over his availability for the upcoming IPL season, the Hyderabad franchise probably opted for a more plausible option.

I believe cricket suffered because of me – Amir

Mohammad Amir, the Pakistan fast bowler, always believed his second chance in cricket would come and that he has what it takes to make a strong comeback. Amir has been allowed by the ICC to return to domestic cricket under the auspices of the PCB with immediate effect. His five-year ban for his role in spot-fixing during Pakistan’s tour of England in 2010 was due to end on September 2.Over the last four years, Amir completed an Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) education program with PCB, showed a high degree of remorse, and disclosed relevant information to the PCB as well as the anti-corruption units. After being interviewed by the ICC, Amir was given the go-ahead, though he can’t play on the international circuit yet.”I believe cricket suffered because of me,” Amir had said in January 2014, when he was interviewed for the documentary due to release this year. “Fans were disheartened because of me. I want to make them happy and win them over again. They felt bad for cricket I have to tell them that cricket is a gentleman’s game and I am going to prove it. Once Amir had a dream to play for Pakistan now Amir’s dream is not only to play for Pakistan but also for these people around the world.”All eyes will be on me and I have to prove this with my performance, my attitude, my behavior. Pressure obviously will be there because I will be getting a new life so I have to play my cricket positively. It’s different because this time I wont be playing for myself, I will be playing for the fans of cricket, and not only for Pakistani fans but all those around the world who followed me, supported me.”With the Pakistan domestic season about to finish before starting again in October, Amir’s only chance of competitive cricket would be a possible return in the Super Eight T20 Cup in Pakistan after the World Cup. However, a few Grade 1 teams had already shown an interest to sign him for next season. National Bank of Pakistan, who had revoked Amir’s contract after his ban, later offered to retain the bowler upon his return. However, the immediate opportunity is to play Grade 2 cricket, and it has been learned that Amir could play for KESC in coming weeks. “I always think when I am in my room, laying on my bed imagining being in ground with ball in my hand,” he said. “My eyes are closed, I am taking a run-up to take a wicket on my first ball. Whatever, if the batsman is right or left, I have a plan to do inswing to get the batsman bowled.”Also what I mostly imagine is the feeling of taking a wicket on the first ball. When I get my first wicket on my return: I will expose my tights under my shirt saying, ‘Amir is back.’ So I am thinking and imagining this again and again.”To be honest, when I left my house I knew that it will be challenging to play for Pakistan. Maybe it was difficult for me earlier, but now I have ample international cricket experience so it won’t be difficult this time. I am a strong believer that if one is positive he will have the positive result. I have a belief in Allah. I can do all of my hard work and maintain my good faith and the result is in the hands of Allah, but the fruit obviously will be positive.”In August 2010, Britain’s tabloid had conducted a sting operation exposing Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammd Asif as part of a spot-fixing scam to bowl no-balls during the Lord’s Test. Amir was the only one of the three to not contest the charges against him and he was sentenced in by Southwark Crown Court and banned by the ICC for five years.

Hales continues form of his life

An unbeaten century from in-form Alex Hales enabled Nottinghamshire to maintain their challenge for the Championship title with a five-wicket success over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road

ScorecardAlex Hales’ hundred helped Nottinghamshire overcome a tricky position•Getty ImagesAn unbeaten century from in-form Alex Hales enabled Nottinghamshire to maintain their challenge for the Championship title with a five-wicket success over Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.A mighty six from Hales took him to 102 not out and lifted Nottinghamshire to their victory target of 211 with more than a session to spare on the final day.The 25-year-old Hales, who also struck 16 fours as well as that maximum off Andrew Hall, had shared in a stand of 122 with James Taylor to take the match away from the home side. His only life came on 89, with the finishing line in sight, as Hall put him down at slip off Neil Wagner.Wagner, on debut, had bowled 21 overs without success in the first innings and a further 12 in the second before he rekindled Northamptonshire’s hopes of a shock win by removing Taylor and then Samit Patel in quick succession. However, they gave Hales a second chance and Riki Wessels helped bring the match to a swift conclusion as 21 came off the next Wagner over, the 28-year-old striking three fours and a huge six over long on en route to finishing unbeaten on 29.That proved to be the penultimate over of the match as Wessels and Hales took 11 runs from Hall to seal the match. Hales, who has also scored centuries against Middlesex and Sussex in recent weeks as well as a hundred for the England Lions, believes he is in the form of his life.”I’m absolutely delighted to get us over the line like that. That’s such an important victory in our season but even after losing those early wickets we were still confident and I thought James Taylor played absolutely beautifully,” Hales said.”Riki Wessels totally took the game away from them at the end there and I thought I was running out of chances to get to a hundred. Following the tons for the Lions last week, at Lord’s on Thursday and now today I feel I’m in the best form of my career and I hope it continues.”Northants had made a positive start to the day with Mohammad Azharullah removing both openers for ducks in his first two overs.Steven Mullaney fell to the fourth ball of the day, edging behind to Ben Duckett, who was keeping wicket in place of the absent Adam Rossington. The first runs then came courtesy of two lots of four leg byes but the third time Ajmal Shahzad was hit on the pads was enough for umpire Nick Cook to uphold a successful lbw appeal against him.Worse was to follow for the title contenders as Michael Lumb went for 6. Lumb had scored 99 in the first innings, so his early departure after wandering across his stumps to expose his leg stump to David Willey gave the hosts another massive boost. However, Hales and Taylor then combined to transfer the complexion of the post-lunch session. With Hales repeatedly battering the boundary boards by punishing anything with width, and Taylor cleverly rotating the strike and turning ones into twos, they gradually turned a challenging day into a race for the line with their 29-over stand. The home side had competed as equals for much of the four-day contest but having let Nottinghamshire escape – the visitors having been 25 for four on the first evening – the outcome was ultimately predictable.Nottinghamshire’s victory, their sixth of the season, earned them 23 points and keeps them hard on the heels of leaders Yorkshire, whilst Northamptonshire, still looking for their first Championship success of the season, took only four points from the contest and slipped to their 10th defeat in 12 matches.Despite the loss, Northants coach David Ripley was able to take plenty of positives from the match. He said: “Over the four days it reminded me of the Somerset game where we were competitive over a number of those days, winning at least two, but on the one that we lost Notts made significant strides in getting away from us.”We’ve played against one of the best teams in the country over four days and we’ve got a lot to be positive about. In the Championship, our last two games have been good, competitive games of cricket, not getting hammered by an innings and we’ve had chances to win.”

O Confronto

Saiu no segundo tempo, desgastado.

ALEX SANTANA NO RADAR

Bailey named in Test squad

George Bailey is set to become Australia’s 436th Test cricketer after beating his fellow Tasmanian Alex Doolan for the final batting place in the squad for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba. Bailey has been included in Australia’s 12-man squad despite his disappointing first-class form over the past year, as the selectors instead backed his strong efforts in one-day internationals, including as captain on last month’s tour of India. The allrounder James Faulkner has also been included as expected, as has the fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, who is likely to share the pace duties with Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle, while Nathan Lyon retained his position as the lead spinner. Shane Watson has been chosen despite suffering a hamstring injury at the end of the Indian tour and the selectors are hopeful he will be able to bowl, which gives them a range of options regarding the balance of the team.Although batting the vice-captain Brad Haddin at No.6 and Faulkner at 7 would be a possibility, as in the final Test at The Oval this year, the likely scenario is that Bailey will fill the No.6 position on debut at the Gabba. During a first-class career that has spanned ten seasons, Bailey, 31, has scored 6011 runs at 38.28, including 14 centuries, but his lack of red-ball form last season initially seemed to have hurt his chances of a Test call-up.George Bailey is in line to make his Test debut at the Gabba•Getty Images

For Tasmania last year, Bailey scored only 256 Sheffield Shield runs at 18.28 and he later conceded that he had struggled significantly with the constant demands of changing formats. However, the national selector John Inverarity noted Bailey’s form the previous summer, when he had made 697 Shield runs at 58.08, and it also helped that since Bailey’s ODI debut in March last year only India’s Virat Kohli has scored more ODI runs than his 1539 at 54.96.”It was certainly discussed at great length last night,” Inverarity said of the decision between Bailey and Doolan. “Alex Doolan is a very highly-regarded player in our eyes … George Bailey has been in fantastic form with the bat. His confidence is riding high. His performance in international one-day cricket has been quite extraordinary and he’s very deserving of his opportunity.”Australia’s T20 international captain since his debut in the format in February last year, Bailey has impressed the selectors in the shorter formats not only with his run-scoring but also his calm, intelligent leadership. Although there was no place for Doolan in this squad, he appears the batsman most likely to be included if another opportunity comes up during the Ashes, after his impressive 2012-13 and strong start to this summer.Apart from the inclusion of Bailey in the 12, the only other change to the side that played at The Oval was the absence of the injured Mitchell Starc, who has been replaced by his fellow left-armer Johnson. At 32, Johnson is set to embark on his third Ashes series and the selectors hope he can make the England batsmen jump, as he did during the ODIs that followed this year’s Ashes, while also demonstrating improved control.”I think he’s bowling a lot more consistent at the moment,” the captain Michael Clarke said. “His pace is certainly high, which is a great start. But it doesn’t matter how fast you bowl, if you don’t know where they’re going it’s always easy to face as a batsman. I think Mitch has that control. He showed that in the one-day format. I said a couple of days ago if Mitch was selected in this squad, it wouldn’t surprise me if in a couple of months’ time you see Mitch being Man of the Series.”Whether Johnson is one of four or five bowlers remains to be seen, but the Australians are hopeful Watson will be able to contribute some overs despite struggling with a hamstring problem he picked up on the ODI tour of India. Watson is expected to bat at No.3, after finishing the Ashes in England with a century at first drop at The Oval, and Inverarity is confident that will not be all he can do for the team.”We’re hoping that he’ll be able to bowl,” Inverarity said. “We’re not sure the extent to which he’ll be able to bowl. He’s progressing very well and he’ll certainly be fit to play. We believe he’s likely to be able to bowl. But it’s nine days to go, so we can’t give a definitive answer on that.”Watson’s fitness to bowl could determine whether there is a place for the allrounder Faulkner, who performed well on debut at The Oval and also made his maiden ODI century in India earlier this month. Inverarity said Faulkner was a player the selectors hoped could offer plenty to the Test team in the future.”He has been a cricketer we’ve had our eye on for a long time,” he said. “He impresses us with his batting and with his bowling and with his attitude, and his uncanny ability to have an impact on almost every game he plays. If you give him the ball, he always seems to be able to conjure up a wicket, when he goes out to bat he has the knack of forming a partnership … we have high hopes for him.”Squad Chris Rogers, David Warner, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (capt), Steve Smith, George Bailey, Brad Haddin (wk, vice-capt), James Faulkner, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon.

Butler replaces Boult for Champions Trophy

Trent Boult has been ruled out of the one-day series against England and the Champions Trophy due to a side strain. Ian Butler has been called into the New Zealand squad, in Boult’s place, for the two tournaments.*Left-arm pacer Boult picked up the injury early in England’s second innings at Headingley where he bowled just two overs. An MRI scan on Wednesday confirmed the initial diagnosis of a muscle tear in his right side and he is expected to make a full recovery in six to eight weeks.Boult was one of New Zealand’s standout performers in the Test series against England, taking 5 for 57 in the first innings of the second Test, and could have been a threat in the one-day matches although his record of six wickets in eight matches means he was by no means a certain starter with the return of Kyle Mills and Mitchell McClenaghan.Butler does not have far to travel to link up with the squad as he was already in the UK playing for the Lashings side. He hasn’t played a one-day international since February 2010 although was recalled to the Twenty20 side to face England earlier this year. In 26 ODIs he has 28 wickets at 37.07.Boult is the second player from New Zealand’s one-day squad to be hit by injury after Andrew Ellis suffered a fractured rib and was replaced by Doug Bracewell.Although the injuries are not ideal for New Zealand they are able to welcome back plenty of experience to their one-day squad as they aim to recover from the two heavy Test defeats at Lord’s and Headingley. Mills, Grant Elliott and James Franklin are back in the mix, but the most significant return could be that of Daniel Vettori who New Zealand attempted to have ready for the second Test before both parties conceded it wouldn’t be possible.Vettori, who played his previous ODI at the 2011 World Cup, does not believe the outcome of the Test series will have much bearing on the limited-overs leg of the tour and drew on New Zealand’s previous experiences in England of 2004 and 2008 when they responded by winning the one-day series which followed the Tests.”This is a completely different format and there’s a more comfortable feel with the one-day matches,” he said. “The guys know their game and have put in some good performances – looking back to that South African series, of recent note.”So I think the guys go into this format a lot more comfortable, and that’s been the same for a number of years. There’s a lot of experienced one-day internationals coming back into the team. I think that helps … a lot of the guys feel pretty good about their one-day game.”*09.15GMT, May 31: This article has been updated after news of the ICC’s technical committee approval of Ian Butler arrived
