Alfredo Morelos let Steven Gerrard down

Rangers slumped to back-to-back defeats in all competitions following a hugely disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dundee United this afternoon.

The Gers were hoping to bounce back from Tuesday night’s loss in the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifying tie against Malmo, but it wasn’t to be for Steven Gerrard’s charges.

After an evenly-contested opening 45 minutes at Tannadice, the reigning Scottish champions were dominant in the opening exchanges after the break. However, a lucky bounce of the ball presented Dundee United left-back Jamie Robson with a golden opportunity to put the hosts ahead, and the 23-year-old made no mistake.

Despite Rangers’ desperate efforts to find an equaliser, their forward line looked blunt and way below its best, producing just two shots on target all afternoon.

Unfortunately for Alfredo Morelos, the Colombia international was the most underwhelming attacker in his first appearance of the new campaign.

As per SofaScore, Rangers’ star striker had just 29 touches in the 82 minutes that he was on the pitch, two fewer than goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin. Morelos also lost six of his 10 duels against the Tangerines, had just one shot on target and lost possession eight times.

The £10.8m-rated forward has let Gerrard down before, although it’s usually for his ill discipline rather than poor displays in front of goal.

El Bufalo will be forgiven for his poor showing by Rangers fans given his previous exploits for the club, but they, alongside Gerrard, will be hoping for a much-improved showing next time out from the 25-year-old.

He was perhaps thrown into the starting XI too soon by the manager considering that he only returned from his homeland a few days ago, yet Morelos would still have been expecting to put in a better performance than what he did today.

LFC fans delighted for Daniel Sturridge

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to the news that Daniel Sturridge has joined La Liga side Real Mallorca.

The 31-year-old had an injury-plagued career at Anfield, but he was a popular figure during his time at the club.

Sturridge scored 68 goals in 160 appearances for Liverpool, and had it not been for fitness issues, his tally would likely have been far greater.

On Tuesday, the Liverpool Echo confirmed that the striker would join Mallorca on a trial this summer, with a view to joining permanently ahead of next season.

It is easy to forget that Sturridge is still only 31, so the hope is that he can settle in Spain and still enjoy a number of good years in his career.

Celtic may repeat Shane Duffy nightmare

Mention Shane Duffy’s name around Celtic supporters and you’re likely to provoke stories of terror and torment.

The centre-back signed for the Hoops on loan 12 months ago and he looked like a solid pick up initially.

He had experience in the top-flight of English football and was proven in one of the best leagues in European football.

However, he eventually left Parkhead early following an injury-hit and calamitous stay in Glasgow.

Duffy was nothing short of a liability at Celtic last season, miscommunicating with Christopher Jullien in the Scottish Cup final back in December and producing a number of errors.

A short cameo against Rangers back in January said it all. He replaced Nir Bitton following the Israeli’s red card but the Irishman was fortunate not to be sent off himself for a reckless challenge on Ryan Kent.

What made this move worse was the fee Celtic parted ways with for a season. The Bhoys paid a £2m loan fee and were happy to give him a whopping salary of £30k-per-week.

That’s a mind-boggling amount considering the performances he put in.

However, it serves as a reminder of why Ange Postecoglou cannot overpay for George Baldock this summer.

Another proven Premier League defender, Celtic would be happy to pay £5m in order to lure the full-back to Paradise.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

However, they’re looking to find alternatives in the market after it became apparent that Sheffield United want something closer to £8m in order to let him leave.

The Hoops are desperate to find a right-back with Anthony Ralston the only senior option they have at their disposal in that third of the pitch.

Though, with the defender putting in an abject display against Midtjylland in the Champions League on Tuesday, there is an even greater need to invest in a right-sided defender.

Baldock was previously described as “superb” for a piece of play he produced for Sheffield United but if their Duffy situation told them anything, it’s that they cannot overplay for players simply because they’ve starred in the Premier League.

He is a capable defender and adept in forward areas but they’d find much better value for money pursuing someone like Brandon Soppy or Aurelio Buta.

With a high fee being touted, this is a move that the Hoops need to forget about.

Most Bangladeshis don't have the ability to buy cricket materials

It’s a woefully regretting fact that most Bangladeshis don’t have the ability to buy cricket kits, despite their maddening eagerness towards the game. Feel sorry for the millions of kids all over the country who are deprived of getting adequate cricket materials they need to flourish their talents; hence, had to content with the tennis ball and hand made ragged bat and with those twigs of trees meant for stump. Many families here can’t put up with their sons’ demands of buying them a cricket ball, pad, a handy bat or guards because they are high priced. As a result many promising kids don’t even come to the ground. So, the pricey cricket kits don’t allow the kids belong to a poor family enter the realm of this game. Most of the materials come from India and Pakistan, saying that the price list is relatively cheap there. The cost of a ball ranges from Taka 90 to Taka 250, the lowest price of a batting pad is 265 Taka, wicket keeping gloves cost 250 Taka and a bat made to play even the tennis ball costs no less than 180 Taka. This is the scenario; let alone there is need to wear helmets or thigh guards, which are much costlier and quite expensive for most of the families here. The important thing is that there are hardly any price tags found on those materials bought from India and Pakistan. The sports shops here, are enterprisingly exploiting the chance, as the materials have no price tags on them. They are tagging the kits with their desired price (Of course a much higher one), thus making those unaffordable for the common people.Buying capabilities or affordability has quite a good link with the development of cricket anywhere. Bangladesh is enjoying the Test status for more than eighteen months, still the government is reluctant to lend a hand to import cricket materials. The government should help the importers in this respect, so that the materials could be reasonably priced, easily purchasable within the reach of all.

Liverpool fans love Youri Tielemans update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to an update claiming the Reds are front-runners to sign Youri Tielemans.

It could be a relatively busy summer transfer window for Jurgen Klopp, as he looks to perfect his squad ahead of next season.

Liverpool have already brought in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, but it is important that other new faces also arrive at Anfield in the next few months.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

One player who has been linked with the Reds is Tielemans, who was excellent for Leicester City last season, proving to be an influential figure in the middle of the park.

The Belgium international also famously scored a brilliant winning goal in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea, in what will go down in Foxes folklore.

Now, in a fresh update from Corriere dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool allegedly lead the race to sign Tielemans this summer, with his future potentially lying away from Leicester.

Crystal Palace: Eagles keen on Guehi

Crystal Palace are keen on signing Chelsea defender Marc Guehi, according to The Athletic.

The Lowdown: Guehi profiled

The 20-year-old centre-back has 18 months of senior football under his belt.

He joined Swansea City during the second half of the 2019/20 campaign and spent the whole of the 2020/21 season in Wales, making a total of 59 appearances during that time.

Guehi, an England Under-21 international, has over two years remaining on his Stamford Bridge deal, worth £4,900-a-week.

His Transfermarkt valuation has skyrocketed over the last 18 months to £9m, and it seems as if the Eagles are tracking his situation.

The Latest: Woosnam and Fifield’s claim

The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam and Dominic Fifield shared an inside story on Nuno Espirito Santo’s move to Selhurst Park falling through on Wednesday.

In that piece, they suggested Guehi is a target for Palace, though it is not clear whether Steve Parish and co are hoping for a loan or permanent move.

The Verdict: Two manager targets know him well

Frank Lampard and Steve Cooper have both re-emerged as candidates to take over at Selhurst Park, and the pair will know Guehi well.

Cooper described Guehi as ‘brilliant’ last month and he was the man who has handed the Blues ace his first taste of senior football.

Lampard was in charge of Chelsea at the time of Guehi sealing his loan moves to Swansea, so you’d expect he would have agreed to the temporary deals with a view towards utilising the youngster further down the line.

Both managers may well end up targeting the youngster, should they take over from Roy Hodgson, but fans will have to remain patient for transfer activity given the current managerial situation.

In other news: Many Palace fans fume at specific Nuno Espirito Santo details, find out more here.
