Shakib Al Hasan eyes Chittagong draw

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s captain, Bangladesh’s captain, is aiming to hold India to a draw in the upcoming first Test starting January 17 in Chittagong

Cricinfo staff15-Jan-2010Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s captain, is aiming to hold India to a draw in the upcoming first Test starting January 17 in Chittagong. Bangladesh have not played a Test since July and have been fed a steady diet of one-day matches since, but Shakib did not believe the team would be rusty ahead of what will be their toughest series since January of last year.”I think the battle between India and Bangladesh this time will be an interesting one because the opponents have a long batting line-up while we have a few quality bowlers. However, we don’t bother much about the result of the match,” he told reporters during a training session in Chittagong. “But a draw will be good for us. I am confident that we will have a good chance if we can score 700 runs in the two innings.”Bangladesh’s last Test assignment, against a severely depleted West Indies, saw them win their first overseas series. That contest was highlighted by good bowling, especially from the spinners. Since that series, Bangladesh have played only limited-overs cricket, which included a series win over Zimbabwe at home and a winless streak in the recent tri-series featuring India and Sri Lanka.”It is true we didn’t play a Test match for quite sometime, but hopefully that won’t pose any major problem for us to adapt to the Test mould,” said Shakib. “We batted well in the last ODIs of the tri-nation series and want to show improvement in our game in the field, not through words.”

NUFC linked with Wijnaldum transfer

With just one Premier League win under their belt so far this season, there’s a big chance that Newcastle United’s new owners could dip into the January transfer market to try and give Toon manager Eddie Howe a boost to his squad by bringing some new faces in to turn their season around.

Looking ahead to next month, it seems as though PIF have their eye on bringing someone to St. James’ Park who a lot of Toon fans would recognise.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from AS, former Magpies midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum apparently wants to leave Paris Saint-Germain after just a few months at the club with a potential return to the Premier League on his mind.

The report also claims that Newcastle are the first team to show an interest in signing him from the French club.

Cabaye 2.0

During his time at the Tyneside club before moving to Liverpool, Wijnaldum made 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring 11 goals and providing five assists in the process.

Labelled as a “complete” player that is “unbeatable” on the pitch by Ryan Babel, Wijnaldum has started ten of the 20 games he’s appeared in for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

In terms of a potential return to Newcastle in January, this could be just what they need to get their season fully on track after only recently managing to secure their first league win of the season by bringing an experienced Premier League player with a knack for scoring goals into Howe’ side.

Even though he’s already played for Newcastle before, signing him again in January could see Wijnaldum become their next version of Yohan Cabaye, who they also signed from Ligue 1. Like the Dutchman, he also had a knack for scoring and providing goals from midfield by racking up 18 strikes and 14 assists in 93 appearances during his time with the Magpies.

With Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin scoring nine out of Newcastle’s 16 league goals between them this season, it would be good for Howe to have someone like Wijnaldum, who is currently valued at £27m according to Transfermarkt, in his squad that has the ability to carry the load in terms of goalscoring for the team.

Looking ahead to January, if PSG are willing to negotiate for a potential deal that would see Wijnaldum leave the club, then Newcastle and PIF should be doing everything they can to bring him back to St. James’ Park. He could just be their next Cabaye.

West Ham fans slam Benrahma

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans were left unimpressed with the performance of Said Benrahma against Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

David Moyes’ men were looking to improve on their recent Premier League home record and took on London rivals Spurs in one of their most highly-anticipated derbies of the season.

Fresh off the back of an impressive midweek win over Genk in the Europa League group stage, taking full control of that contest and placing one foot into the last 16, today’s encounter came as a totally different beast.

The match was on a knife edge for the most part until Aaron Cresswell’s corner midway through the second half fell to Michail Antonio, who made no mistake and opened the scoring for 1-0.

One man who certainly didn’t impress some supporters with his display during the contest, though, was Benrahma – who has been handed more of a chance by Moyes this season compared to last.

Some Irons supporters felt that he has failed to truly grasp his chance, with the Algerian struggling to really make his mark on a consistent basis at the London Stadium today. As per SofaScore, he finished the match as West Ham’s lowest-rated starter and was hauled off by Moyes 10 minutes from full-time, having lost seven of his nine duels, completed just one of his five attempted dribbles and given the ball away 12 times.

He often cut an “anonymous” figure against Spurs and couldn’t really stamp his authority or creativity on the game, so it’s little wonder why some supporters feel he underperformed. One angry Irons fan even fumed that the Algerian was “playing for Tottenham”.

Check out some of the fans’ verdicts on the 26-year-old below.

Lockerbie outlines plans for US-style IPL

Martin Williamson talks to USA cricket supremo Don Lockerbie about plans for a Stateside version of the IPL

Martin Williamson17-Jul-2009

Don Lockerbie: ‘We’re going to do it well, we’re going to do it smart, we’re going to do it best’•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

There was a certain irony that on the day plans for a major Twenty20 tournament in the USA were announced, the USA Cricket Association’s chief executive, Don Lockerbie, was at Lord’s watching an Ashes Test, a format many seem to think is growing less relevant by the year.Lockerbie was in town to meet with leading administrators to advance his plan to make the USA a major cricketing destination. While he wants to build the USA into a leading cricketing power, he also believes Twenty20 cricket is a format made for the American audience.”I’d like to see a successful, world-class, best-players-in-the-game tournament, an invitational franchise league or something like that, in the near future,” he said. “That would be the dream. It’s too early to say what kind of format that would be, but we’re putting out a tender for proposal.”Will that, as has been rumoured, be another IPL? “The IPL as I look at it now is a remarkable, fantastic model to follow. Look at what it’s been able to do. Our hat is off to Lalit [Modi] and the people behind this fantastic sports property.”So, of course, you want to look at it as a model to emulate, or as a model to partner with, or at least to come up with something that has its own fresh appeal.”The USA is a country that wants to see the superstars, and that’s what we have to focus on. We have to invite them to come and play in the USA, and eventually we hope to develop our own superstars.”The USA already has one major venue, in Florida, and Lockerbie said more are planned, either in new areas, such as Indianapolis, or by expanding existing facilities in California and New York.”The proof will be, is the USA ready to undertake these type of events? When the US was announced back in the late 1980s as the host for the 1994 [football] World Cup, the world laughed and said ‘what are they going to do with our game’. And yet we still hold the record for the most tickets sold at a football World Cup.”Before the world laughs at the US taking on cricket, it’s important to say we’re going to do it well, we’re going to do it smart, we’re going to do it best and with the world’s experts and put together a programme that will be successful.”And he added that his plans were very much in tune with the ICC and would fit in with the existing international calendar. “We’re going to make sure what we do has ICC backing. That’s the promise we made when we did a presentation to the ICC in Dubai [in April].”We made a commitment we will be a significant contributor to the world of cricket and a good partner. I don’t see us as a competitor, I see as being a partner in something that will make sense to the game as it continues to evolve.”Unlike many previous comets who have blazed into US cricket with bold ideas only to disappear without trace, Lockerbie has the professionalism and drive to make you think he really can pull off these plans. A highly-regarded sports organiser and event administrator, he was venue director at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean and is well connected in not only the game but also the corporate world, something vital for the backing he seeks.

Aston Villa: Fans react to kit reveal

Aston Villa will be changing kit supplier next season, according to a report from Footy Headlines.

The three-year deal they signed with Kappa is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and they will take the opportunity to switch to Castore from the start of the 2022/23 season.

It’s not yet known how long Villa’s contract with the Liverpool-based manufacturer will last, or indeed how much income it will net for the Midlands club.

Castore’s reputation pre-Villa

Castore already have agreements with two Premier League clubs – Newcastle United and Villa’s Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. They also manufacture the kits of Steven Gerrard’s former club Rangers and are believed to have struck a deal with Champions League outfit Sevilla.

A number of Newcastle fans were critical of the designs for their 2021/22 strips, while Rangers’ away kit received a ‘largely negative reaction’ from many of the Ibrox faithful.

Fan feed Villa Report relayed the news, and here’s what some supporters had to say about the potentially “dreadful” switch to Castore.

These Villa fans fume over Castore news

“How do we expect to take ourselves seriously with low tier kit designer brands like Castore? And after the cheap tat Kappa have thrown together for three years. Can’t see myself buying next season’s kit.”

Bruce set to leave NUFC before Spurs clash

Luke Edwards has dropped a big update on Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, regarding his future at St. James’ Park.

What’s the talk?

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has claimed that he is expecting the Newcastle boss to be sacked before this weekend’s clash with Tottenham.

Edwards has revealed that Bruce had an hour-long meeting with the new owners where they thanked him for the job he had done, with another, less-pleasant, conversation now seemingly set to take place.

He told BBC 5 Live Sport: “I do think Steve Bruce will be gone. I think he’s going to go before the Tottenham game.

“My understanding is that they (the owners) may well have thanked him today for keeping them in the Premier League so that this takeover could happen.

“I think we’ll find out in the next 24 to 48 hours, Steve Bruce’s future, and I wouldn’t expect him to be in the dugout against Tottenham.”

Elation

Newcastle fans will be elated that Bruce is expected to be sacked before the club’s clash with Tottenham in the Premier League. The Magpies are 19th in the table and winless after seven games and supporters could be furious if the 60-year-old remained in the dugout and led them to another defeat to send them further adrift of safety.

A recent survey, prior to the takeover, by the Newcastle United Supporters Trust found that 94.3% of the fans wanted the experienced coach to be axed, with 95.3% stating that they believe the club will be relegated this season.

Another survey on Tuesday morning suggested that 97% of supporters wanted Bruce to get the boot as well.

This highlights how badly the Magpies supporters want the manager out of St. James’ Park and that is why they will be elated that he is unlikely to be in charge against Spurs.

They will be delighted that the owners are set to make a swift decision instead of dragging it out over the course of a few weeks and allowing Bruce to lose Newcastle more games in the top-flight.

It was, however, a respectable decision from the owners not to sack Bruce in their first meeting with him. If Edwards’ information is correct, it was a nice touch from them to thank him for what he has done for the club in the last couple of seasons, as it could help to end his ties with the club on amicable terms.

It also means that they may have learned valuable information from Bruce if they asked him about the squad and where he thinks it could be improved. With the January transfer window less than three months away, PIF could begin to draw up a list of targets and narrow it down based on Bruce’s advice, given that he has worked with the majority of the current squad for two years.
