Moores the merrier as Lancs escape

Simon Kerrigan and the Manchester weather conspired to deny Warwickshire victory in Peter Moores’ final game as Lancashire coach

It has been a tough start to the season for Warwickshire. Beaten by Sussex in their first game and deprived for various medical reasons of Ian Westwood, Jonathan Trott and Rikki Clarke, they perhaps needed a spring fillip.Fortunately for Ian Bell’s men, Lancashire’s batsmen have begun this County Championship campaign in accommodating mood and it was their dismissal for 196 in the second innings of this game which set up a victory opportunity for the visitors. Much less fortunately for Warwickshire, neither Simon Kerrigan nor the Manchester weather were anything like so amenable and the match ended in an absorbing draw.As Varun Chopra led the pursuit of 120 in 29 overs, Lancashire’s slow left-armer Kerrigan revived memories of previous heroics by taking four wickets, including the vital scalp of Ian Bell, caught at long-off by James Anderson. When Chopra, helped by a resourceful Ateeq Javid, had reduced the requirement to a mere 25 runs off 27 balls, bad light intervened to bring a premature end of what had threatened to be one of the finishes of the season so far.It was gripping stuff in the Manchester gloom and it even overshadowed, as you might say, the fact that this was Peter Moores’ last match as Lancashire coach. For his part, Warwickshire coach Dougie Brown may feel deeply aggrieved. Denied in similar circumstances against Somerset when chasing the title last August, Brown had seen his players establish a winning position here by dint of fine, purposeful batting and accurate, penetrative bowling. Few things in this game were as rewarding as analysing Bell’s intelligent deployment of his attack on this final day, notably his withdrawal of Javid when the part-time offspinner had removed Jos Buttler in his single over. For all that Lancashire may be comforted by the acquisition of nine points from this game. Desirous of giving Moores a warm farewell before he leaves Old Trafford, their batting frailties will be a cause for concern, even this early in the season. On what was effectively a third-day wicket – it spun, but not outrageously so – Glen Chapple’s side lost all their second-innings wickets for 150 runs in 63.2 overs and their last six for 39 runs in 86 balls.Following their first-innings failures in both their matches so far, Lancashire do not seem to possess the proficient, reassuring top- order upon which successful Division One campaigns are based. If Ashwell Prince fails or Paul Horton is unable to drop anchor, it is not always easy to see how Chapple’s batsmen can put together substantial totals. For all that people will remember this game for Bell’s batting, Chris Woakes’ bowling, Horton’s limpet-like resistance and Moores’ departure, the dismissals of Prince for 0 and 3 were vital in shaping the architecture of the contest. The South African was third out in the second innings, beaten in the flight and stumped playing defensively to Jeetan Patel. As for Horton, he followed his 83 in the first innings with a 220-ball vigil for 84 in the second as he sought to save the game. The problem was that once Luis Reece had been caught at slip by Bell off Keith Barker in the third over of the day, no one seemed particularly keen on staying with the watchful opener. At times during the final day it seemed that Horton almost suffered the same fate that befell Mickey Rooney: he nearly ran out of partners.Instead, Horton was perhaps emboldened to an act of outrageous daring by hitting two boundaries in three balls off Woakes. He gallivanted down the pitch to Patel, was beaten in the flight and heard the death rattle. That dismissal left Lancashire on 157 for 5 and it marked the beginning of the end of their innings.

Patel's swagger suits Notts

A swaggering century from Samit Patel at Taunton underlined his talent but he has been spurned by England too often to be obsessing over an England rec

Somerset have laid their latest plans in their quest to join the leading counties of England with phase four of a ground redevelopment which was approved by their general committee last week. Their renewed ambitions on the field lie in phase one and rely on a talented crop of young players who, it is hoped, will improve the club’s position after a 2013 of struggle. Two of their green bowlers, Lewis Gregory and Jamie Overton, were on display on the opening day against Nottinghamshire but they were part of an attack who failed to seize two moments of opportunity and let the day slip away as Samit Patel made his first century of the season and Chris Read his best score for over a year.Patel has a swagger about his batting and his greedy seeking of the bowling saw Somerset rightly chirpy with Notts at a precarious 194 for 5. But Patel’s flashing stroke-making, chiefly on the drive, including a peach over the bowler’s head as Alfonso Thomas took the second new ball, defied any nervousness about the score. Feasting on anything short, of which there was far too much, he went past fifty in 72 balls after tea and only 57 balls later he was arms aloft for his three figures.”England’s not in my mind,” he said, a man perhaps spurned once too often to feel confident about a return. “I’ll score runs and see where that takes me.”Patel said he was surprised to see Somerset choose to bowl first as they chased leather after tea. Patel was joined for the evening session by his captain and fellow little dasher Chris Read and the pair pulled the day Notts’ way with 182 runs in 32 overs. It was immensely entertaining for a good crowd in the Taunton sunshine.Read was the fourth batsman to pass fifty and the quickest of the quartet in 66 balls, in an innings that would have delighted him after a dreadful 2013 where he best effort was only 58. He has shown glimpses of form in the first three matches but this was the significant score that suggests Read has not slipped into decline at 35.Somerset appeal for rebuilding funds

Somerset are turning to their supporters in a bid to raise funds for the next phase of their ground redevelopment – the rebuilding of the Old Pavilion at the St James Street End.
A fund has been set up to help raise part of the £3.85 million cost of the new stand and supporters can become forever inscribed in the new structure for their contributions. A donation of £1000 will also get you an engraved decanter.
The project was approved by Somerset’s general committee last week and it is hoped that work will begin at the end of the season to be part-opened for 2015 and fully finished for the 2016 season.
The St James Street End is the only remaining part of the ground yet to be developed with three previous phases of development completed in turning Taunton into a highly desirable cricket ground and profitable business.
The addition of world-class media facilities will ready Taunton for international cricket as Somerset hope to add themselves to the rota of England venues.

He chose a good time to rediscover his touch. When he came in, Somerset’s decision to bowl first was threatening reward. Gregory broke the partnership between Phil Jaques and James Taylor and Notts lost 3 for 37 to slip into trouble. But for the second time in the day, Somerset lacked a cutting edge and went on to close the day under pressure.Somerset had begun well with the new ball. Gregory, 21, was billed as a batsman who bowls from his youth cricket, but has been one of the leading wicket-takers in the early rounds of the Championship. Following eight wickets at Durham and nine at Hove, he took three more here. He showed good control in an eight-over opening spell that cost 23 and the ability to move the ball was best demonstrated when he brought one back into Michael Lumb to take an inside edge which looped up off Lumb’s pad to third slip.It was the second breakthrough of the first 45 minutes after Thomas has wobbled one into the leg stump of Steven Mullaney. But with a chance to repay Marcus Trescothick’s faith in his attack by choosing to bowl first, Overton led the way in letting Notts ease into the day.Blessed with genuine pace, Overton is already being primed for international cricket but here chose the wrong form of aggression in his opening spell. Far too short, he leaked 23 in his opening five overs as Notts escaped to lunch at 101 for 2.Brought back after the break – and following Gregory’s breakthrough when Phil Jaques was caught on the crease and caught at first slip – Overton perked up and hurried Rikki Wessels once too often and he edged behind. He later bowled a mean short spell to Patel and Read – including coming around the wicket – but the short-pitched attack was overdone and became rather narrow-minded bowling against two of the most experienced players in the county game. Read especially sat back and picked him off on the pull stroke.Overton went at above five an over but Craig Kieswetter was quick to point out that his job is to bowl quickly and try to unsettle batsmen and people need to accept that short bowling and expensive spells may result.

Day for a dark room for Northants

There are worse ways to think about an anniversary than by burrowing through the record books. Lancashire are celebrating their sesquicentennial this year and the second day of the game against Northamptonshire offered many and various opportunities for such indulgence. So mighty were the records eclipsed that one or two Opta statisticians may need a day or two’s rest in a darkened room at the end of this match. Northamptonshire’s players and supporters might require similar care, although that is not quite certain yet. What is beyond serious doubt is that Stephen Peters’ batsmen will have to perform far better on the final two days of this game if they are to avoid the type of eviscerating defeat that can shatter a side’s morale. Replying to Lancashire’s 650 for 6 declared, the eighth-highest total in the county’s history and their fourth-highest at Old Trafford, Northamptonshire lost both openers for ducks in the first three overs as Glen Chapple capitalised on the mental disintegration which often afflicts players who have spent nine hours in the field. The contrast between the visitors’ display and the iron will almost brandished by Lancashire’s Ashwell Prince in his 500-minute 257 not out was very sharp. All the same, Northants captain Peters surely deserved kinder treatment than to fall to Usman Khawaja’s brilliant one-handed catch in the gully off the third ball of the innings; then again, James Middlebrook’s shot, which edged a catch to slip, was not consonant with the responsibilities of an opener and some of the later batting was similarly insufficient: Matt Spriegel gave a bat and pad catch to Jos Buttler off Simon Kerrigan when attempting a sweep square of the wicket; Rob Newton chopped Tom Smith onto his stumps; and Ben Duckett limply edged the same bowler to second slip Prince for a second-ball duck.It may be hard not to feel a little sorry for Northamptonshire at the moment, so cruel have the fates been to them this summer; but their cricketers will not welcome such pity: sympathy does not help anyone avoid relegation. The only comfort for visiting supporters was provided late in the day when Richard Levi reached his half-century and added 44 for the sixth wicket with the similarly resilient Andrew Hall. Even then, Lancashire had the last word when Chapple removed both Levi and David Willey, both batsmen falling to short leg catches by Alex Davies as the 40-year-old skipper gathered his strength and extracted maximum lift from the Old Trafford pitch.Yet for all that the prospect of another heavy defeat is clouding what is becoming a grim summer at Wantage Road, maybe the most significant incident of the second day occurred five balls before the end of Lancashire’s 554-minute innings, when Prince leg glanced Hall to the boundary, thus reaching a career-best score of 256 not out.The South African had added another single to his tally when Chapple declared but his leap of joy at establishing a new personal best was heartening to see. Prince announced in March that this would be his last season, yet the fires of achievement still burn hot within him. “A shilling life will give you all the facts,” wrote W H Auden in , and so they did yesterday, as Prince’s previous high scores were passed; yet one of Auden’s themes is that the most significant factors in a life often lie beyond the biographer’s scope.A lot has changed for cricketers of colour in South Africa since an 18-year-old Prince made his first-class debut for Eastern Province B against Griqualand West in October 1995. It is fair to wonder how many young players have been inspired by his distinguished example, his grooved technique, his indomitable will.Lancashire have certainly been grateful for Prince’s service during his spells at Old Trafford and his innings on the second morning revealed his unsleeping awareness of his side’s needs. As the total passed beyond 400, the 37-year-old was content to support Buttler, who advanced from 37 to 87 in just 22 balls with a display of T20-style clean hitting which probably heartened the watching National Selector James Whitaker. In his pomp Buttler hit three sixes over long-off and long-on in four balls from Graeme White and Spriegel. He then unveiled two varieties of reverse-sweep, each of them very effective. Heavens, this was hard pounding under blue skies for Peters’ cricketers.Lancashire’s fourth-wicket pair had extended their stand to 138 in 24.1 overs before Buttler edged Hall to Duckett who took a good catch standing up to the stumps. But Northamptonshire’s many torments were not ended. Rather, they ended a final phase as Smith biffed a 101-ball 79 and put on a further 140 runs with Prince. And so we moved from one form of beating to another and the strange sight of two No. 21s called Newton batting for Northants. One of them was the real Rob Newton, the other was Levi, who is wearing his colleague’s kit in this match. This cricketing curiosity may have confused a few people but it made no difference at all to anything else. Northamptonshire may seem to possess two Newtons at the moment but the force is not with them.
