All-round Auckland stay top with easy win

A round-up of the action from the HRV Cup 2011-12 matches

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jan-2012Rapid half-centuries from Azhar Mahmood and Martin Guptill, backed up by a tidy, incisive spell from Ronnie Hira, helped hosts Auckland to a 30-run win against Otago that keeps them safely at the top of the HRV Cup points table. Otago chose to bowl and while Nathan McCullum and Dimitri Mascarenhas produced disciplined spells, the rest of their bowlers were very expensive – Auckland finished with 187 for 2, with Guptill making 65 off 45 and Mahmood providing the late thrust with an unbeaten 79 off49.The Otago batsmen just could not get the required momentum going in the chase. Barring Michael Bates the Auckland bowlers were tight and Hira finished with the pick of the figures: he took 3 for 17 in four, including a double-strike in the eighth over. McCullum and Mascarenhas completed fine all-round showings with rapid cameos towards the end, but the lethargic start meant that was not enough to propel their side home.Rob Nicol picked up four wickets to carve up Wellington’s middle order and help Canterbury to a 61-run win at the Basin Reserve. Wellington chose to field and after solid second-wicket stand between George Worker and Peter Fulton – both players made scores in the 40s – they struck with regularity to keep Canterbury to 151 for 8. Spinner Jeetan Patel, with 3 for 18, was their most effective bowler. However, they fumbled badly in the chase – no batsman other than James Franklin managed to get into double figures, as they folded for 90 in the 17th over. Nicol, the destroyer-in-chief, ran through the middle order and Wellington could not recover, conceding an easy win to Canterbury.

Yorkshire wait on Jaques clearance

Yorkshire, once known for only selecting players born within the county borders, hope their attempts to bring in former Australia international Phil Jaques as a non-overseas player won’t be blocked by the ECB

Yorkshire, once known for only selecting players born within the county borders, hope their attempts to bring in former Australia international Phil Jaques as a non-overseas player won’t be blocked by the ECB. Jaques has chosen to turn his back on Australian cricket after being offered a two-year contract by Yorkshire, who want to take advantage of the fact he has a British passport, thanks to English parentage. However, Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, has said that ECB regulations could mean Jaques has to fill the county’s one overseas player slot for the season. The 32-year-old opener, Jaques, has previously played for Yorkshire and Worcestershire as an overseas signing but, before being capped by Australia, turned out for Northamptonshire as British-qualified. It is now up to the ECB to decide whether he can make the switch back.”We’ll need agreement from the ECB to allow him to come as a non-overseas player,” Moxon told the . “As a British passport holder, you can come and work in England without a work permit. That’s not the problem. It’s the ECB regulations where we have to make sure all the boxes are ticked.”We need clarification on whether they are happy with that. They may not allow it, but hopefully they will, given the time span between statuses.”If Jaques is allowed to return as a local player to the county he played for between 2004 and 2005, then Yorkshire will look to bring in a further recruit from abroad. “We’ve got a few irons in the fire,” Moxon said. “But, obviously, we can’t act on them until Phil’s been cleared. If we get Phil’s clearance, we probably would sign somebody else.”As it is, Jaques will not be available for Yorkshire’s opening match of the County Championship, against Kent on April 5, because it clashes with preparations for his wedding. The 32-year-old, who made 11 Test appearances for Australia before a back injury curtailed his international career, is expected to be in the UK in time to make his first appearance against Essex two weeks later.

Dilruwan Perera burst keeps Colts top

ESPNcricinfo rounds up the seventh round of matches of the Premier League Tournament 2011-12

Sa'adi Thawfeeq07-Mar-2012 Premier League Tier AThe seventh-round matches in the Premier League tournament had to be staggered due to the inter-school cricket season being at its height, with matches between longstanding rivals, including the traditional “Big Match”, between Royal College and St Thomas’ College, currently taking place. These school matches, which are played towards the weekend, are historical and see turnouts nearing 10,000 at certain venues. They are played at international venues like the P Sara Oval, SSC, R Premadasa Stadium, Galle Stadium and Asgiriya Stadium. As a result they affected the scheduling of the Premier League matches, some of which were played early during the week and some after the weekend. The Lankan CC v Tamil Union game began on February 27, SSC v Bloomfield on February 28, Colombo Colts v Chilaw Marians on March 1, NCC v Moors on March 2 and Ragama v Badureliya on March 4.

Following three poor games Ragama CC have started to move again. Their 145-run win over Badureliya SC at the Surrey Village Ground was solely due to fine all-round efforts by two former Sri Lanka cricketers, Kaushalya Weeraratne and Indika de Saram. Weeraratne, who represented his country in 15 ODIs, played a captain’s knock when he thumped a magnificent 97 off 67 balls, including five sixes, to lift his team from 143 for 5 to 320. Then he returned to destroy the Badureliya batting with an opening burst of three wickets, which had the opposition reeling at 7 for 3.Badureliya somewhat recovered from that shock to post a respectable total of 229, but conceding a first-innings lead of 91 left them chasing a target of 384 in the fourth innings. The challenge proved beyond their means and they were dismissed for 238. de Saram, the 38-year-old hard-hitting allrounder who represented his country in four Tests and 15 ODIs, picked up six wickets in the match with his offbreaks to go with batting contributions of 70 and 43. The win, their second of the season, propelled Ragama CC to fourth position in the Premier League Tier A standings.

Tamil Union suffered a setback to their title aspirations when they conceded vital first-innings points to Lankan CC at the P Sara Oval. The result was brought about by two young batsmen who shone for Lankan CC. Twenty-one-year-old left-hander Ashen Silva scored his third hundred of the season, a well-paced 157 off 321 balls, and 22-year-old Shameera Weerasinghe scored his maiden first-class century (121 not out off 221 balls) to steer Lankan CC to a formidable first-innings total of 465 for 9 declared. The reputed Tamil Union batting fumbled against the pace of Vimukthi Perera and Saliya Saman, and the left-arm spin of Gayan Sirisoma, to be bundled out for a disappointing 229. Although Tamil Union hit back strongly in the second innings through skipper Sachitra Serasinghe and Chatura Randunu (who shared all ten wickets) and bowled out Lankan CC for 165 they couldn’t make much headway beyond that.Table-toppers Colombo Colts CC showed that they were made of champion stuff when they bounced back from a first-innings deficit of 69 runs to beat Chilaw Marians by 43 runs at Havelock Park. Colts recovered from 80 for 8 to reach 175 in the first innings, through contributions from the tail. Their batting was rattled by the pace of Sri Lanka fast bowler Shaminda Eranga and the offspin of Janaka Gunaratne. The two shared eight wickets between them. Despite a fighting century from Milinda Siriwardene, Chilaw Marians gained only a lead of 72 in the first innings.Colts’ batsmen were once again uncomfortable against the spin of Malinda Pushpakumara and Gunaratne, and folded for a timid 223, leaving Chilaw Marians the formality of scoring 152 for victory. But Sri Lanka ODI cricketer Dilruwan Perera had other ideas. Opening the bowling on a pitch responding to spin, he picked up six wickets for 39 off 12.4 overs to shoot out Chilaw Marians for 108 and earn Colts an unlikely victory, their fourth of the season, which consolidated their position at the top of the table.

Sinhalese SC kept pace with the table leaders by grabbing first-innings points in their drawn match against defending champs Bloomfield at the SSC . A maiden first-class double-century (216) by Sri Lanka batsman Chamara Silva, who shared a fifth-wicket stand of 193 with his captain Chintaka Jayasinghe (92), helped Bloomfield to a total of 480. SSC took up the challenge and replied with 493 for 4, with Sri Lanka Test opener Tharanga Paranavitana warming up the for the two-Test series against England, starting later this month, with a solid 223. Paranavitana and his opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne (64) gave SSC the start they needed to chase down Bloomfield’s tall total by putting on 150. Paranavitana also added 123 for the second wicket and 121 for the third as SSC made full use of a flat track where only one innings was played by each team.

Nondescripts CC lifted themselves from the bottom of the table by taking first-innings points off Moors SC in a drawn match played at Moors Sports Club. NCC looked like they were headed for another defeat when they were dismissed for 180 by the Moors pace duo of Kasun Madushanka and Himesh Silva, who shared eight wickets between them. But an early breakthrough provided by Sri Lanka left-arm fast bowler Thilan Thushara helped NCC to put pressure on the rest of the Moors batting, which folded tamely to the spin of Sohan Boralessa and Jehan Mubarak for 134.NCC nearly threw away the advantage when they lost three second-innings wickets for 36, but Mubarak, the former Sri Lanka batsman, and the talented Angelo Perera stemmed the collapse with a 242-run partnership for the fourth wicket that enabled NCC to set Moors a target of 332. Both batsmen made centuries. Despite an attractive knock of 154 not out off 216 balls by 21-year-old Isham Ghouse, his maiden first-class hundred, Moors ended the game 33 runs short with two wickets standing.NCC coach Hemantha said the main reasons NCC are struggling are players leaving the club when they don’t find a place in the squad and the failure to put up good first-innings totals. “The kind of pitches we prepare at NCC there is not much chance of winning a match outright,” Devapriya said. “Most of the matches are decided on first-innings points and in this area we have been lacking. Our batsmen have been able to score runs only in the second innings, which is not helping us.”He also mentioned that five NCC players were on national duty in Australia – Kumar Sangakkara, Upul Tharanga, Farveez Maharoof, Dinesh Chandimal and Chamara Kapugedera – and that also had an adverse effect on team performances. Kapugedera had to fly off midway during their match against Moors when he was called up for the CB series finals as a replacement for the injured Thisara Perera. NCC also lost the services of their captain Kosala Kulasekara for the rest of the season when he broke a finger attempting a return catch. Mubarak will take over the captaincy for the remaining matches.”I am confident that if we can obtain first-innings points from one of our remaining two matches (against Ragama CC and SSC) we can avoid relegation,” Devapriya said. Premier League Tier BSri Lanka Army SC’s legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna was rewarded for his exceptional bowling performances during the season with a place in the Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup in Bangladesh later this month. Prasanna, the leading wicket-taker of the season with 50 wickets from five matches, has been the mainstay for Army, who continue to head the Premier League Tier B standings.Last week Army made short work of Saracens trouncing them by an innings at the Army Ground in Panagoda to record their fifth win of the season, making them favourites to win the title. Prasanna and medium-pacer Nuwan Liyanapathirana took match bags of nine wickets apiece as Saracens was bowled out for totals of 114 and 90.Second-placed Sri Lanka Navy lost ground when they were suffered a shock seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka Ports Authority CC at the Navy Ground in Welisara. Navy’s batting was dismantled by the left-arm orthodox spin of Shanuka Dissanayake who finished with 12 wickets in the match including a career-best 6 for 59 in the second innings.Burgher RC moved to third spot when they beat Kurunegala Youth CC by three wickets in a thrilling finish at Havelock Park. Chasing 220 for victory BRC were seen home by Vindika Chandrasiri who hit a career-best 93 after they had been in a spot of bother at 83 for 3. Kurunegala stalwart Ajith Ekanayake showed that he still had fire in his left-arm cutters even at the age of 46 by taking a match-haul of nine wickets.Colombo CC lifted themselves from the bottom of the table by securing their second win of the season, beating Police SC by an innings at the Colombo Cricket Ground. The foundation for their win was laid by their fourth-wicket pair of Rasika Priyadarshana and Upul Fernando, who both hit centuries.

Kohli demolishes Pakistan in record chase

Virat Kohli’s 183 off 148 balls led India to their highest-ever ODI run-chase, as they went past Pakistan’s 329 in Mirpur

The Report by Abhishek Purohit18-Mar-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSachin Tendulkar made an aggressive 52 to give India a brisk start•AFP

Their bowling might struggle to defend 289 against Bangladesh. Their batting might not be resilient enough to dominate in all conditions. But in the subcontinent, India are the masters of the chase. And after having knocked off 321 in 36.4 overs in Hobart barely three weeks ago, they completed their highest successful ODI chase, in Mirpur, against Pakistan, who are not exactly a weak bowling side. And leading the mammoth effort was that man Virat Kohli who scored a career-best 183. Forget the obscenities, forget the extreme emotions; with 11 hundreds, including three in his last four innings, Kohli is one of the most complete ODI batsmen in the world now. When a boundary is needed, Kohli is the man. When the singles are needed, Kohli is the man. When a gap is to be found, Kohli is the man. He kept doing all of that for 148 deliveries against Pakistan. By the time he was done, he had hit 23 boundaries and made 183. India had lost Gautam Gambhir off the second ball of the innings. They lost just one more wicket in the next 272. Kohli’s dominance was so complete, it left contrasting support performances from Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma in the shade. It certainly meant Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed’s centuries were in vain, as was their 224-run opening stand, Pakistan’s highest against India, and their second-highest ever. Not losing by a bonus point put Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup; it kept India and Bangladesh dependent on the result of the last league game between the hosts and Sri Lanka, who have been knocked out. A win for Bangladesh will see them go through, as they lead the head-to-head against India in the tournament; any other result will see India qualify. It was Kohli who almost single-handedly kept India in the tournament with a performance so supreme it led Misbah-ul-Haq to call it one of the best ODI innings he had seen. Chasing 330 is tough. Chasing 330 against Pakistan should be as tough as it gets for an India batsman. Kohli could not bother about things such as pressure, even when Pakistan struck gold in the first over when Mohammad Hafeez trapped Gambhir in front.Pakistan were playing five bowlers but India worked around the threat of Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul initially by targeting the others. Tendulkar and Kohli outdid each other in strokemaking. Their second-wicket partnership was worth 133 in just 19.1 overs. While Gul and Ajmal were given the respect they deserved, the shorter lengths of Wahab Riaz and Aizaz Cheema were taken for runs, as was the quicker pace of Shahid Afridi. The 100th century finally done with, Tendulkar was totally unrestrained and went along at a faster clip than Kohli. India found momentum in the third over, Cheema’s first, which went for 12. Kohli began with a violent pull while Tendulkar’s back-foot punch past cover was vintage. Pakistan had just started to suffer for bowling the wrong lengths. Cheema continued to bowl short of a good length, and Tendulkar brought out another vintage shot – a sly guide over the wicketkeeper that flew away for six.Tendulkar and Kohli dealt with the spinners in their own ways when they needed the boundaries. Tendulkar carted Hafeez over midwicket with a slog sweep; Kohli whipped Afridi through the same region.Riaz’s three-over spell put Pakistan under even more pressure. Not only did he bowl short, he kept on targeting Kohli’s pads and the batsman helped himself to several fours on the on side. He ultimately disappeared for 50 in four overs. Hafeez, the lone part-timer used, went for only 42 in nine.Tendulkar, meanwhile, misread an Ajmal doosra after reaching his half-century and ended up edging it to slip, but Kohli was looking nearly unstoppable. What he needed was a sidekick and Rohit rose to the occasion. He took his time before showing his range against spin with a series of cuts, pulls and lofted drives over extra cover. Kohli and Rohit went one better than Kohli and Tendulkar had, as the third wicket realised 172 in 26.2 overs.Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed’s 224-run opening stand had put India under pressure•AFP

Kohli was in the zone. He went without a boundary for 32 balls, but still scored 25. In this period, he got to his century, which came with the now-famous emphatic celebration. In this period, Rohit kept getting the boundaries. The asking-rate still crossed eight an over after the 40th over. Kohli went after Gul in the 41st in a flurry of whip, swat, loft and clip. Sixteen runs later, the rate was below seven-and-a-half. He wasn’t done yet. Riaz was greeted with a whip off a yorker, a flick and a drive in the 42nd. Thirteen runs later, the rate was below seven.Though Kohli and Rohit could not hit the winning runs, the game as a contest between India’s batsmen and Pakistan’s bowlers had ended during their partnership.Hafeez and Jamshed had ensured the pressure would be squarely on India going into the chase, with a 224-run opening partnership. After having failed to defend 289 against Bangladesh, India were once again let down by the inability of their bowlers to either strike or contain.India had the opportunity to make first use of the Mirpur pitch, which has been harsher for bowlers in the evening, but Hafeez and Jamshed stroked boundaries at will, against a listless unit, on their way to centuries. Younis Khan, usually not one to worry attacks at the death, smashed 52 off 34 deliveries to lift Pakistan to their second-highest total against India.India’s lack of penetration was evident when MS Dhoni threw the ball to Tendulkar in the 24th over, after having already tried seven bowlers. Five of them had already gone at more than run-a-ball by then, and none, barring Ashok Dinda, had come close to troubling the Pakistan openers.Pakistan had taken control long before that, though, with Hafeez and Jamshed, a burly left-hander in the Graeme Smith mould, playing with assurance and eschewing any desperation. The previous best opening stand for Pakistan against India was 144 between Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar in 1996; Hafeez and Jamshed had already rustled up 150 at the halfway mark. Both soon got to their centuries, Jamshed’s being his maiden one in ODIs.The batting Powerplay consumed both batsmen, as they searched for more runs, but Younis and Umar Akmal ensured that Pakistan came nowhere near enduring the kind of middle-order collapse they had had against Bangladesh.Younis has been criticised for being slow in this format, but today he was at ease as the innings neared its close. Orthodox punches and lofts raced for boundaries through the off side. To Pakistan’s misfortune, Kohli would hit them harder in the evening, and for longer.Edited by Dustin Silgardo
