Durham seal innings win despite Barker ton

A maiden first-class century from Keith Barker couldn’t prevent Durham from completing an innings and 103-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston

A maiden first-class century from Keith Barker couldn’t prevent Durham from completing an innings and 103-run victory over Warwickshire at Edgbaston. The win takes Durham up to second place in the table, just three points behind Lancashire, who have played one fewer game. The teams meet at Chester-le-Street in a match that starts on Sunday. In the end, Durham were made to work for this win. When Rikki Clarke became the seventh Warwickshire man to fall in their second innings, there was a possibility the match might not even make it to lunch. As it transpired, however, the game was deep inside the final hour by the time Ruel Brathwaite plucked out the final two wickets. That Warwickshire came so close to saving the game was almost entirely due to the efforts of their final four batsmen. It took Durham 69 overs to prise out the final three wickets as Barker and Naqaash Tahir, in particular, showed a level of resolve that put their top-order colleagues to shame. The absence of Steve Harmison also delayed Durham. Harmison managed just five overs on the final day as he nursed a sprained joint in his spine. He’s also a doubt for the Lancashire game.In many ways, Warwickshire didn’t deserve a draw. The majority of their batting and all of their bowling was pretty awful and Durham outplayed them in all departments. But the resistance of Barker and Naqaash was excellent. Neither man had previously made a first-class half-century, but they put the affable nature of this pitch into perspective with a stand if 117 in 41.2 overs.Unlike many left-handers, Barker is not a particularly elegant batsman. The 24-year-old former pro footballer strikes the ball with tremendous power, however, and played in an admirably straight and compact manner. Before this innings, his previous first-class score was just 31 but, such was the quality of his driving and pulling, in particular, that there appears no obvious reason why he should not develop into a genuine allrounder capable of batting in the top six and bowling as part of a four-man seam attack.Naqaash also impressed. When he made his Championship debut, in 2004, he often acted as nightwatchman and produced several valuable contributions. His batting had regressed since then, however, and this was only his sixth score in excess of 30 in 56 first-class games. For the most part, he was utterly strokeless. He defended stoutly, however and, unlike his top-order colleagues he refused to be drawn into strokes outside the off stump. His 195-ball vigil lasted 69 overs – just 10 minutes short of four hours – and left him suffering from cramp in both arms.In the end, however, it was all in vain. In truth, their resistance only highlighted the fragility of Warwickshire’s top-order batting. On a pitch that has remained docile throughout, Warwickshire’s specialist batsmen continued to attach far too little value to their wickets with Jim Troughton, Darren Maddy and Rikki Clarke all perishing to ill-disciplined prods outside the off stump, while Tim Ambrose played around a straight ball. But, as the ball softened and the bowlers tired, Durham’s attack struggled to finish off the game. There was little help for the spinners and, though Callum Thorp looked dangerous throughout, Ben Stokes struggled to maintain a tight enough line. In the end it was Blackwell who made the breakthrough. The over after Barker reached his chanceless century, he edged one that was pushed on to him to slip.Still Durham’s wait went on, however. Chris Metters lasted for 77 minutes, helping Naqaash add another 55 runs in 25 overs and resist everything Durham could throw at them with the second new ball. Finally, however, just as it appeared that Warwickshire might pull-off a highly unlikely escape, Brathwaite struck the decisive blow. First he produced a quick yorker to end Chris Metters’ 80-minute battle, before he managed to persuade Naqaash to follow one that may have bounced more than the batsman expected and edge the ball to third slip. Just 54 balls remained. It meant Warwickshire ended with just one point from the game – their worst return in a championship since Leicestershire inflicted a similar result in 2002 – while it was the third time in four games that Durham had taken a maximum 24 points.”We’ve got to be better than that,” Warwickshire’s director of cricket, Ashley Giles admitted afterwards. “In the first innings, too many of our batsmen played a part in their own dismissals and we’ve had too many people getting 20s, 30s and 40s without going on to get 100s.”At least our lower-order batsmen showed good courage. But we should never have been in the position where they had to bat for two sessions to save the game. We have to learn from this and do better.”

Shakib four sinks Yorkshire

Worcestershire retained their top-four place in the Friends Life t20 North Group and dealt a blow to Yorkshire’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages with a 41-run victory at New Road

26-Jun-2011
ScorecardWorcestershire retained their top-four place in the Friends Life t20 North Group and dealt a blow to Yorkshire’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages with a 41-run victory at New Road.Competition-best half-centuries by Alexei Kervezee and James Cameron swept the Royals to an imposing 183 for 7 and their spin-and-seam combination – led by Shakib Al Hasan with four for 31 – restricted Yorkshire to 142.It was another convincing performance by a fast-improving team who have performed well in the last month with two LV= County Championship wins and four victories in six completed games in the shortest format.Moeen Ali (40) gave them a high-tempo start before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off Richard Pyrah, the first bowler to achieve any degree of control in a useful spell in which Shakib squirted a chance to point. Kervezee (56) and the left-handed Cameron (55) then hit nine fours and four sixes between them and took the game away from Yorkshire with a whirlwind partnership of 77 from 50 balls.England seamer Tim Bresnan, now easing his way back into the county game after a calf injury, conceded 47 runs for one wicket but international team-mate Ajmal Shahzad dodged the worst of the punishment by taking 3 for 30.Yorkshire’s batsmen were under pressure from the outset and there was no way back when the top four were dismissed inside the opening six-over power play. Andrew Gale and Jonathan Bairstow skied top-edges off the seamers and Shakib got to work with wickets from his third and fifth balls. He bowled Anthony McGrath and had Adam Lyth stumped by some distance.Gary Ballance and Joe Root, with 26 apiece, tried to mount some kind of a recovery but Bangladesh’s slow left-armer, Shakib, accounted for Root and Shahzad to complete a personal-best return in Twenty20 cricket.Despite what was a forlorn effort by Bresnan with an unbeaten 25 from 17 balls, Worcestershire were home and dry when paceman Gareth Andrew (three for 17) took the last two wickets in successive deliveries in the 19th over.

Jack Taylor surprises Somerset

Jack Taylor marked his Friends Life t20 debut with 4 for 16 as Gloucestershire upset the form book with a two-wicket win over Somerset at Bristol

01-Jul-2011
ScorecardJack Taylor marked his Friends Life t20 debut with 4 for 16 as Gloucestershire upset the form book with a two-wicket win over Somerset at Bristol. Taylor, the 19-year-old off-spinner, included big-hitting West Indian Kieron Pollard among his victims as the visitors were restricted to 121 for 9 after winning the toss.Marcus Trescothick top scored with 28, while David Payne took 2 for 4. In reply, the Gladiators made 124 for eight, Taylor again the hero with 38. Lewis Gregory took 4 four for 15 as Somerset defended their modest total with everything they had.It was Taylor’s night. By the time he was run out having guided Gloucestershire from a perilous 75 for five, only 12 runs were needed. Even then the game was only settled in the penultimate over when Muttiah Muralitharan hit Steve Kirby for two followed by an edged four, leaving only four to get off the last over.Pollard should have run out Richard Coughtrie with the second ball, but missed all three stumps from 10 yards following through after bowling. His next delivery was a full toss which was deposited over mid-off by Coughtrie for the winning runs.Ian Cockbain (19) and Chris Taylor (18) made important contributions for the Gladiators after they had slipped to 18 for 3 .Earlier, it was Payne who had put Somerset under pressure by dismissing openers Peter Trego and Trescothick as they made 43 for 2 off the six overs of powerplay.Muralitharan helped tie down the middle order with 1 for 20 from his four overs, but had to play second fiddle to Taylor, who had James Hildreth caught at deep midwicket sweeping, yorked Pollard for 15 and also sent back Jos Buttler and Gregory.Arul Suppiah did his best to boost Somerset’s total with 23, but could take few chances and fell in the final over. Their total looked below par, but a low-scoring game ultimately provided a thrilling finish for a large crowd.Somerset could have gone top of the South Group had they won, while victory for the Gladiators kept alive their slim chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

Gooch credits hard-working England

It’s not often that a team’s challenge can be written off inside 26 overs, but India’s performance on a rain-hit first day at The Oval was apathetic beyond compare

Andrew Miller at The Oval18-Aug-2011It’s not often that a team’s challenge can be written off inside 26 overs, but India’s performance on a rain-hit first day at The Oval was apathetic beyond compare. In his first Test for three years, RP Singh proved to be a wayward and sluggish shadow of the tearaway who starred on his last England tour in 2007, and though Andrew Strauss had a scare when an Ishant Sharma bouncer chipped the peak of his helmet, the shock of that moment served only to exacerbate the dross that went before it.None of that, however, mattered to England’s batting coach, Graham Gooch, whose legendary appetite for run-making has been absorbed by a relentless line-up that has carried England to the top spot in Test cricket. In the day’s solitary session, Gooch’s Essex protégé, Alastair Cook, nudged his average above 50, as he and Strauss confirmed the wisdom of ignoring the overhead conditions, and trusting the firmness underfoot of a typical Oval wicket.By the close, Cook was 34 not out, having scored 1630 runs at 90.55 in the 12 months since he rebooted his career with a dogged 110 on this very ground against Pakistan. Although he modestly batted back the suggestion that Cook was one of his “charges”, Gooch’s personal input has been one of the most significant factors in Cook’s rise and rise – from their 6am training sessions in the off-season at Chelmsford, through the endless hours of throwdowns prior to every Test match, and ultimately via the insatiable appetite for run-scoring that, even in this era of prolific batsmen, leaves Gooch’s England record tally of 8900 runs some 3000 clear of the nearest contemporary challenger.”As far as I’m concerned I’ll be absolutely delighted if someone goes past any of my records,” said Gooch, “because it’ll mean England are winning cricket matches. From the time I was a captain, player and selector, I was only interested in one thing, and that was England winning matches.”At Cook’s current rate of progress, that mark will be overhauled at some stage in the next three years, and quicker still if India continue to feed his strengths to the extent that they did during his 294 at Edgbaston and again during a supremely untroubled first morning at The Oval. “Alastair continues to improve,” said Gooch. “You see all the hard work he puts in. It doesn’t come by chance; it’s hard work and ability, and he’s getting the rewards. We are proud of him.”There was little joy for a listless India line-up on the first day at The Oval•Getty Images

“He has the four attributes that make up a ‘run-maker’,” Gooch added. “He has a great attitude; he has technical ability; his knowledge pool is increasing all the time, of how to play in certain situations; and he has the No. 1 attribute, massive powers of concentration. If you want to score 200, you can’t do it in an hour; you’ve got to be out there for six or seven hours. You’ve got to play every ball singly for all that time – each ball in isolation.”During his days as England captain in the early 1990s, Gooch attempted to instil a greater discipline in England training sessions – but found that his methods were rejected by a prevailing culture that did not appreciate such a rigid onset of professionalism. Twenty years on, the England set-up is ready to embrace his driven ethos, and his involvement with the team is reaping its overdue rewards.”Under Andy Flower, the coaching staff like to stimulate the players and challenge them with new practice routines,” said Gooch. “We’re always looking to push the boundaries and test the players, not just in technique but in their minds as well – to move them forward as people and cricketers.”When you play you do what you think is right for you, and everything in good faith. That is certainly what is happening now, and everyone buys into the system. Everyone knows what they need to do. Being fit, mentally strong and having character goes side by side with having a good technique and the natural ability to score runs and take wickets. I’ve never seen a fitter, stronger player become a worse player.”India’s cricketers could do with a dose of such realism at the end of a flaccid campaign. Like Zaheer Khan in the first Test at Lord’s, RP Singh looked short of the requisite fitness for Test cricket, as indeed did Virender Sehwag, whose continued involvement in the tour had been shrouded in mystery before the toss.”The Indian line-up is tried and trusted, with some of the greatest names the game has ever seen,” said Gooch. “They’ve not got the runs they would have liked but I’m sure they’ll be out there in the nets tomorrow.” Whether they are there at 8.30am, however, like Gooch and his England batsmen, remains very much to be seen.
