Plays of the day from the second day of the 5th Test between Australia and England at Sydney

Don’t hassle the Hoff
First he became famous for owning a car with a bigger brain than him. Then he moved on to making red budgie smugglers into the 1990s fashion accessory of choice. In between whiles he single-handedly ended the Cold War. But today, when David Hasselhoff played a lofted cover drive off Shane Warne, while batting in the shadow of the Bradman Stand no less, he attained more greatness in a single sentence than in much of the rest of his career. Nevertheless, the Hoff stole the show on the second day at the SCG. His tenuous interest in cricket was telegraphed this week with a cameo appearance in Graeme Swann’s latest video diary, and in the ten minutes before tea, there were as many people watching his antics with a plastic bat as were glued on England’s serene acceleration against the new ball. The fact that, prior to the series, Warne had accused Swann of strutting around as if he himself was the Hoff added an extra frisson to their confrontation.Don’t hassle the Hilf
Ben Hilfenhoff, to give him his new (and presumably short-lived) nickname, has improved markedly as a batsman since he started his Test career with two ducks in three innings against South Africa in 2009. At Lord’s in July, he transformed Australia’s fortunes in the first Test against Pakistan with his maiden half-century, and today, he and Mitchell Johnson set about producing another rescue job in a free-wheeling 76-run stand for the ninth wicket, which had several nostalgic England fans daydreaming about Darren Gough and Devon Malcolm’s anarchic onslaught on this very ground 16 years ago. The best moment of the stand was Hilfenhaus’s dismissive drive over long-on for six off Tim Bresnan, a blow of such authority that Johnson felt obliged to follow up with a four and a six of his own off Graeme Swann’s very next deliveries. In truth it was all too clean-cut to truly bear comparison with that mayhem of yesteryear. But tailend runs are always fun to watch.Trott sinks
Prior to this innings, Jonathan Trott’s average against Australia was an extraordinary 100.83, and comprised of three hundreds in five Tests, including his brilliant 168 not out to put the Melbourne Test out of reach last week. In the blink of an eye today, however, he had a full 14 points lopped off that average, as Mitchell Johnson lured him into an unbalanced drive, and bowled him off the inside-edge for a six-ball duck. What is more, it was the very first 0 of Trott’s Test career. In 29 previous innings he had only failed to reach double-figures on four occasions, with his lowest score of 3 coming against Bangladesh at Old Trafford in June. Not six of the best
Brad Haddin was Australia’s third No.6 of the series but he didn’t provide anything useful and was the first wicket of the day. It was Michael Clarke’s idea to promote Haddin above Steven Smith, who was rated a specialist batsman in Perth and Melbourne. Haddin managed 6 before he wafted outside off and was caught behind in the day’s fourth over. His contribution took Australia’s No.6 tally to 142 in eight innings, with Smith’s 38 at the WACA the best so far.Hussey uncovered
Michael Hussey was looking dangerous by the time he reached his 30s and seemed extremely comfortable targeting Paul Collingwood’s medium pace. In Collingwood’s fourth over Hussey pulled him for two from the first ball, and then cover drove him four balls in a row. The field was immaculately set and the men were never beaten, but their hands were sore. Hussey felt ready to break free but the final ball of the over was fuller, straighter and swung in, clipping the batsman’s inside edge on the way to the stumps.Sydney likes Beer
Australia’s debutants have received strong welcomes over the first two days. On the opening afternoon it was Usman Khawaja who received the praise and today it was Michael Beer’s turn. Beer, the left-arm spinner, walked out to a loud cheer and was applauded when he defended a ball, and then glanced his first Test runs. The biggest roar came when he came on to bowl late in the day and had Alastair Cook caught at mid-off, but it was followed by a raucous boo. Billy Bowden wanted to check if there had been a no-ball. There was, so Cook stayed. Beer’s mood improved slightly when he took the catch of Kevin Pietersen at fine leg.

Hong Kong through to finals

A round-up of action from the World Cricket League Division Three tournament in Hong Kong

Vaibhav Wategaonkar scored a quick half-century but it wasn’t enough to take Oman through to the finals•ICC/Cricket Europe

Hong Kong beat table-toppers Papua New Guinea by 93 runs at the Hong King Cricket Club to qualify for Friday’s final in the ICC World Cricket League Division Three, where they will play PNG again. Hong Kong’s win also mean they are guaranteed promotion to WCL Div. 2.PNG, who chose to field, had Hong Kong in trouble early on as Rarva Dikana and Hitolo Areni picked up three wickets to reduce Hong Kong to 39 for 3 in the 11th over. However, Hussain Butt, who top-scored with 68 was involved in two crucial 40-plus stands with Irfan Ahmed (25) and Nizakat Khan (36) to take Hong Kong past 100. Areni struck to dismiss Nizakat and Waqas Barkat in quick succession but Butt and captain Najeeb Amar put on 53 runs in just under 10 overs to get the Hong Kong innings back on track. Butt was dismissed with the score on 196 but Nadeem Ahmed hit some big shots to take Hong King to 221 before they were bowled out.Hong Kong’s bowlers then defended the total, bowling PNG out cheaply. Tony Ura and Kila Pala were the only two batsmen who managed to get past 20, as PNG failed to string together any substantial partnerships and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nadeem picked up three wickets as PNG were bowled out for 128 in just under 48 overs.”We talked about how we could beat PNG today and knew if we batted first it would be important to make as many runs as possible before our bowlers could get to work on the PNG side,” said Hong Kong coach Charlie Burke.”The important thing for us was to remain focussed and we knew by putting PNG under pressure the side would become vulnerable which they did today. We beat them in a warm-up game without our full strength squad so we knew we had the ability today to beat them, and our ability and strength showed today.”There are plenty of quality sides in Division 2 but my focus since taking this role has been about securing promotion. We have the promotion but this league isn’t over and we want to win the entire tournament in front of our home crowd before we focus our attention to the new challenges and teams Division 2 will throw at us,” said Burke.”We’re obviously disappointed with our play and commitment in the loss to Hong Kong today,” added PNG captain Dikana. “Today was Hong Kong’s final as they battled for survival in the tournament and they were the better side on the day. Congratulations to a well prepared side that fought hard and showed strong spirit.”We have a rematch to see who will take home the title of Division Three champions and I know my team have the ability to take the trophy home to PNG as the best side in the tournament. Our complete focus is on tomorrow as we take one step at a time. Tomorrow is a new ball game.”

Two aggressive half-centuries from Hemin Desai and Vaibhav Wategaonkar carried Oman to a commanding four-wicket win over Denmark at the Kowloon Cricket Club, but it was not enough to allow Oman to qualify for the final.Denmark were sent in to bat and got off to a shaky start, losing their openers with just 38 runs on the board. Carsten Pedersen and Rizwan Mahmood steadied the innings with a 66-run partnership but once Mahmood was dismissed with the score on 104, Denmark suffered a collapse. Rajesh Kumar and Khalid Rashid picked up three wickets apiece as Denmark slumped from 104 for 3 to 181 all out in just under 48 overs.Oman needed to knock the runs off quickly if they were to keep their hopes of qualifying for the final alive. Desai and Zeeshan Siddiqui got them off to a rapid start, adding 34 runs in 2 overs before Siddiqui was dismissed. Desai and Wategaonkar then blasted 41 runs in 17 balls. Desai fell for 51 off just 17 balls with five fours and five sixes. Wategaonkar added another rapid 22 with Adnan Ilyas before Bashir Shah had Ilyas stumped. Oman seemed to lose momentum after his dismissal. Though they reached their target in just under 25 overs with Wategaonkar unbeaten on 54, Hong Kong went ahead of their run-rate by beating PNG to destroy Oman’s hopes of qualifying for the final.

USA’s hopes of qualifying for WCL Div. 2 were ended by Italy, who beat them by four wickets at the Mission Road Ground. Italy will now go on to play Oman in the third-place playoff while USA will play for fifth place against Denmark.Italy got off to a shaky start in their chase of 223, slumping to 52 for 4, but a 102-run partnership between Peter Petricola and wicketkeeper Hayden Patrizi got them back into the game. After Patrizi was out for 50, Michael Raso came in and smashed 38 off 29 deliveries, and Italy got home with 18 balls to spare. Petricola was unbeaten on 69.Petricola had also been Italy’s most successful bowler, taking four wickets as Italy restricted USA to 222 for 8. USA captain Steve Massiah scored 52 and opener Sushil Nadkarni scored 47, but USA didn’t get to a big enough total.”Along with the entire team, I am hugely disappointed to be relegated back to Division Four,” said Massiah. “We didn’t prepare for this tournament as well as we have done in other events and our performances here were nothing like what we know we are capable of when we play cricket.”Certain things didn’t go our way this tournament and we now need to go back to the USA and rethink our strategy and how we are going to bounce back from this and rebuild our team to climb back up the leagues.”

ICC asks Pawar to intervene over tickets

The ICC has asked its president Sharad Pawar to intervene in a growing controversy over the sale and distribution of tickets for the World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Feb-2011

Sharad Pawar has been asked to step in and resolve the ticketing fiasco that has arisen in India•Associated Press

The ICC has asked its president Sharad Pawar to intervene in a growing controversy over the sale and distribution of tickets for the World Cup. A letter written to Pawar by David Becker, the ICC’s legal head, and published by the Indian channel , warns of the growing discontent among the ICC’s commercial partners over tournament tickets due to them and the possible financial fallout. It has also recommended that the 4,000 general tickets for the World Cup final not be sold at the “box office” but instead “sold to defined cricket fans that are associated with the event and have requested purchase”. This, it said, was because the high demand for these tickets created the “potential for chaos and physical injury when the box office sales open”.Pawar is the chairman of the tournament’s Central Organising Committee and a former president of the BCCI, where he still enjoys considerable influence (He is also president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, which is responsible for the Wankhede stadium). As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the hosting agreement makes the national boards (the hosts) responsible for the distribution, stamping and printing of gate tickets and hospitality tickets; it also says the hosts “will exercise strict control” to conduct efficient orderly production and distribution and hospitality. “It is apparent that certain Hosts have failed to comply with this requirement,” the letter said. The sale and distribution of tickets among the public has become a matter of concern for two main reasons: the small number of tickets available for the final, and the poor distribution system, online and through snail mail, of tickets to buyers. Becker’s mail says the issues have been regularly highlighted at Board level in recent months.”We understand that Kyazoonga have been unable to distribute all of the tickets purchased online by customers some months ago for the reason that they have not as yet received all the physical tickets from the respective cricket venues/associations,” the letter said. “We have received many complaints from fans who purchased tickets but are yet to receive them despite having paid for these tickets more than six months ago and being informed at the time that these would be couriered to them by early February. Apart from the threat of claims for compensation from these customers, this is causing a significant public relations issue for the ICC.”We also know that the Kyazoonga website crashed on several occasions yesterday due to the massive demands placed on the system when tickets for the final were placed on sale.”The letter also deals with the supply of tickets to the ICC’s commercial partners. It said the ICC had not received any tickets for matches in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and had received complaints from its commercial partners, “who have paid millions of dollars to receive rights and benefits which include the timely provision of tickets and hospitality”. It notes the impact this could have on the relationships with these partners and says it is “highly likely that some or all of them” will seek compensation from the ICC and/or withhold payments. The letter quotes an ICC commercial partner writing to CEO Haroon Lorgat saying, “This is an $80m sponsorship and to say you are bound by the BCCI is inexcusable.””The ICC is awaiting a response from him [Pawar] to decide on further course of action,” Colin Gibson, the tournament media director, told .The problems with ticketing have arisen because the BCCI chose to print and distribute tickets through multiple state associations rather than one central ticketing agency. This has led to delays in the physical tickets being made available for those who have bought them online and the inability to forward the sponsors share of the tickets so they can invite their guests to games. For example, the tickets for Sunday’s India v England match which has been shifted to Bangalore were only received on Wednesday. Whenever it was brought into discussions over the course of the past year, the hosts had informed the ICC that matters were under control. As the tournament got underway, the lack of centralised control that has led to ticketing chaos. Organisers say that the official ticketing agency, Kyazoonga.com, has not been informed about how many tickets will made available for online sale and at what cost for the Mohali semi-final on their website. It says, however, that such claims for compensation from either disgruntled fans or unsatisfied commercial partners will be set off against any distributions due to the relevant hosts.ICC chief Pawar is in New Delhi today and will be at the Kotla match between West Indies and South Africa and is expected to discuss the issue with officials.
