Leeds United have been boosted in their efforts to sign Ola Aina, with the defender reportedly ‘destined’ to leave Torino in the January transfer window.

The Whites have already been linked with a move for the 25-year-old in recent weeks, with Victor Orta on the lookout for options to strengthen Marcelo Bielsa’s squad – the manager was forced to bring on two debutants against West Ham on Sunday.

The former Chelsea youngster’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023, so Torino are running out of time to receive a fee for him.

The Verdict: Ideal addition this month

Aina may not necessarily be the glamour signing that some Whites supporters crave in January but he is a solid right-back who could provide strong competition for Luke Ayling.

He is currently on Africa Cup of Nations duty for Nigeria, starting and winning their first two matches and averaging three tackles, three interceptions and two clearances in the competition so far – he was even Whoscored’s Man of the Match in their opener against Egypt.

That highlights what a competent defender Aina is, and with Ayling not getting any younger at 30, Leeds could even view the Torino man as his successor.

Former BCCI president AC Muthiah has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the board’s rules that permit BCCI and IPL administrators to be part of the IPL and own league teams. The petition follows the Madras High Court’s decision last month to dismiss a similar plea filed by Muthiah and is significant in light of the fact that the board secretary, N Srinivasan, is also the owner of an IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings.Prior to the amendment, clause 6.2.4 of the Regulations for Players, Team officials, Umpires and Administrators, said: “No administrator shall have, directly or indirectly any commercial interest in the matches and events conducted by the Board.” After the amendment, though, the clause said “no administrator shall have directly or indirectly any commercial interest in any of the events of the BCCI excluding IPL, Champions League and Twenty20.”Muthiah’s petition echoes his recent statements that Srinivasan’s convening of Monday’s crucial IPL governing council meeting is invalid given the conflict of interest.The meeting is set to decide Lalit Modi’s future with the IPL. Modi, who is under fire over allegations of corruption, has questioned Srinivasan’s authority in convening the meeting for the same reason as Muthiah.”All he [Srinivasan] is actually is an ex-officio member of the council, as an office-bearer of BCCI, and he is a conflicted party who owns an IPL team. He has never and can never call a governing council meeting,” Modi wrote in a mail to BCCI president Shashank Manohar.Last month, however, the Madras High Court dismissed Muthiah’s application that sought to remove Srinivasan of his role as a BCCI office-bearer given his involvement in the IPL. Under its original rules, the BCCI prohibited its office-bearers from having commercial interests in the league, but this rule was retrospectively amended in September 2008, eight months after the inaugural round of bidding for IPL franchises.The Chennai franchise was won by the company India Cements, of which Srinivasan is the managing director, and BCCI’s ruling validated his involvement in the IPL.In December that year, Muthiah filed a civil suit in Madras High Court, questioning the BCCI’s amendment that effectively said the IPL was out of the board’s purview. Muthiah also filed an application seeking an interim stay on Srinivasan functioning as BCCI secretary, for the period until the suit was heard.That application was turned down in March this year, while the suit is yet to be heard by the court. The court’s stand was that the clause was a code of conduct and not a rule, and as such could not be challenged by an individual from outside the BCCI. The court however ruled that the merits and demerits of various clauses could be examined during the hearing of the civil suit.The governing council is set to meet on April 26, and at the latest on May 1, if Modi’s attempt to defer it is successful. The suit is unlikely to be tried between now and the meeting, which makes Modi’s line of defence against Srinivasan untenable.Meanwhile, Muthiah expressed his support to Modi’s claim, reiterating his original argument. “I quite agree with Lalit Modi. Srinivasan is an interested party and I filed a case against him for conflict of interest. He is a secretary and he is a holder of franchise. It is clear he has no right to call for a meeting,” Muthiah told PTI.

The Latest: Spurs love de Ligt

SPORT (via Sport Witness) recently reported that Chelsea and Tottenham are interested in signing de Ligt, who joined Juventus in a staggering £67.5 million deal.

Consequently, Mokbel spoke to Give Me Sport about the possibility of the Netherlands international signing for Spurs. He said: “De Ligt, I’m sure, would be someone that Tottenham would love to try and lure to the club next season.

“But they certainly won’t be the only ones because he’s a fantastic player.”

This follows the 22-year-old’s agent, Mino Raiola, recently telling NRC that his client is “ready for a new step” in his career.

The Verdict: Too expensive for Spurs?

According to Salary Sport, de Ligt earns £200,000-a-week at the Italian club. This may price Daniel Levy out of a deal, as star player Harry Kane is also on those figures. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Spurs would be able to warrant the same financial burden for a 22-year-old player as they would their most prized asset.

However, that’s not to say that the Dutchman is not worth the money, having never been short of huge praise. Italian football expert Carlo Garganese hailed the youngster as ‘an absolute monster’ who ‘physically bullies’ strikers, whilst Raiola himself likened him to ‘an oil tanker, [as] he will be unstoppable’.

These seals of approval have come from all across the footballing world, so it is not hard to see why Juventus would command such a substantial fee for a player ranking as one of the best performers in their squad (Whoscored).

But it will be up to Levy and Paratici to decide whether Spurs sanction a move for the pricey star.

Sunderland have once again found themselves looking for a new permanent manager after Lee Johnson was relieved of his duties following the club’s recent humiliating 6-0 defeat against Bolton Wanderers in League One.

In terms of who could come in and see out the remainder of the season in charge of the Black Cats, one name, in particular, has given the club a big boost in their search by reportedly making them aware of his interest in the currently vacant position.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Sunderland Echo, former Celtic manager Neil Lennon “has been mentioned” with the manager’s position at the Wearside club “as he is believed to have made clear he wants to be considered.”

This comes after it appeared as though Roy Keane was also in the frame.

Keane alternative

Having had two spells in charge of Celtic where he won many trophies as well as having stints in charge of Hibernian and Bolton, the 50-year-old has a total of 536 games under his belt as a manager, highlighting the experience he has of leading teams and winning titles, particularly at Celtic.

This is something that could make this an exciting and captivating appointment for the club’s supporters, one that leaves them thrilled, especially when Keane has been out of the game for so long, and hardly has a decorated CV either as a manager.

For instance, during his tenure with the Black Cats, Keane won 42% of his matches but that tumbled when he took charge of Ipswich, prevailing in a measly 34.6% of his matches at the helm at Portman Road.

Like the former Sunderland boss, Lennon is currently without a job in management but his reported eagerness to be considered for the role at the Stadium of Light could well make it a pretty straightforward appointment for the Wearside club. That’s something that would surely benefit the team, ensuring they have a new boss in sooner rather than later.

It must be taken into account how the Northern Irishman resigned from Celtic in his second spell with the Scottish club after falling 18 points behind Rangers halfway through their previous season. That’s something that may well go against him if the Sunderland hierarchy does indeed consider appointing him.

That said, his previous exploits in Glasgow, where he won numerous trophies, shows he is a coach who is capable of handling the pressure of a job with a big club where supporters are expectant. As a consequence, his previous expertise could be just what Sunderland are looking for with Lee Johnson having a far less appealing CV when he joined; something that Keane, unfortunately, boasts too.

Moving forward, with Sunderland currently sat in third place in the League One table with 54 points on the board, five below leaders Rotherham United, if the club does appoint Lennon, he will have a lot of pressure on him to try and secure promotion by the end of the campaign.

Though, if he’s shown an eagerness to take the job, he must be aware of what the job would entail and the pressures that would come with it given how Sunderland have now spent four seasons in League One.

Último reforço anunciado pelo clube, Diego Souza, contratado por R$ 10 milhões do Sport, desembarcou na capital paulista nessa segunda-feira, realizou exames médicos e foi liberado para trabalhar no gramado apenas durante a tarde. O jogador não participou da pré-temporada do time pernambucano e, por isso, passa por uma programação especial no Tricolor.

Já Cueva teve a liberação da diretoria para se apresentar apenas nesta semana, seis dias depois do início da pré-temporada. Embora não “com a antecedência ideal”, nas palavras do diretor executivo de futebol Raí, o peruano informou que estava fazendo ações publicitárias em seu país. O atraso na reapresentação das férias o fará demorar a estrear em 2018.

Diego Souza e Cueva participaram deum treinamento funcional no gramado, sob o comando dos preparadores físicos Pedro Campos e Henrique Martins, batendo bola e dandopiques. Depois, fizeram atividade com alternâncias de velocidade, intensidade e direção, antes de iniciar fortalecimento muscular no Reffis.

O resto do grupo realizou treino técnico e tático sob o comando de Dorival Júnior, priorizandoconstruções de jogadas e simulando situações de jogo. Bastou o treino acabar para o atacante Bissoli, aniversariante do dia e recém-promovido das categorias de base, receberum banho de isotônico, ovos e farinha.

O São Paulo estreia na temporada no dia 17, contra o São Bento, em Sorocaba, pelo Campeonato Paulista. Certamente, sem os meio-campistas Diego Souza e Cueva, mas com a possibilidade da escalação do goleiro Jean, primeiro reforço anunciado para a temporada.
