Newcastle transfer news on Wijnaldum

Newcastle United are now set to battle with former manager Rafa Benitez, now at Everton, to sign Gini Wijnaldum on loan in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Gini’s journey

It seems like an age since Wijnaldum rocked up at St. James’ Park, in a season where he contributed a very impressive 11 goals and five assists from midfield, as he played in every single game of the North East club’s 2015/16 Premier League term (Transfermarkt).

Unfortunately, they were relegated at the end of that campaign, prompting the Netherlands international to leave for Liverpool, where he enjoyed so much success.

Dubbed as being ‘absolutely sensational’ by Tyneside legend Alan Shearer when he was Anfield back in 2018, Wijnaldum was a regular in a Reds side which eventually won both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, further showing his credentials.

Nonetheless, he moved to PSG in the summer, and may already be looking for a way out of France…

The Latest: Wijnaldum battle

As per 90min, the Magpies are one of a number of teams to have now been approached by PSG in order to try and take Wijnaldum on loan next month, following their interest in the 31-year-old.

However, Benitez is set to battle with them in order to secure his signature, while Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Leicester City and Aston Villa are also not against the idea of snapping him up.

Any club who takes him on would have to pay a ‘significant portion’ of his hefty £300,000-per-week wages though, which could prove to be a stumbling block.

The Verdict: Do it

Wijnaldum would certainly be a popular addition among the Toon Army, given the albeit brief success that he had with them before.

The experience and winning mentality that he has gained since then at both Liverpool and PSG would also be vital to Eddie Howe’s squad, as they aim to get themselves out of the relegation zone by the end of the season.

Nonetheless, he has shown his quality before, and so would be a shrewd addition to the middle of the park.

Two days ago, Australia were mauled in Nagpur without Lee and Hopes, and are now ‘Paine-less’ as well

Sidharth Monga in Delhi30-Oct-2009

Ricky Ponting: ‘Momentum is all that’s happening in a particular game. I don’t think much of it carries from game to game.’•Associated Press

For half an hour at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Friday, James Hopes took throwdowns from Tim Nielsen in the nets even as the rest of his team-mates warmed up in the main stadium. He made sure he stretched while playing the sweeps, paddles and reverse-paddles. He then proceeded to bowl quite a bit, before batting some more.Australia were desperate, but after the fitness test they chose not to risk Hopes. Brett Lee bowled a few deliveries from four paces, and it was clear he wouldn’t be playing either. Graham Manou, the replacement wicketkeeper for the injured Tim Paine, was still several hours’ flying time from India. Two days ago after being mauled in Nagpur without Lee and Hopes, Australia are ‘Paine-less’ as well. The win in Vadodara was just five days ago but this already seems a different world for them. Till Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar’s freak partnership, it seemed like the highs from the England series and Champions Trophy hadn’t ended for Australia.Lee couldn’t bowl out his quota then, Hopes’ hamstring gave way and Shane Watson and Peter Siddle came down with a sudden bout of half-volleys and full-tosses. It was reminiscent of 2008 when Harbhajan and Zaheer saved the Bangalore Test, after which it was all India. From looking like world champions, Australia are struggling to find 11 men standing, let alone a best XI. They might be desperate but they are not panicking just as yet. Ricky Ponting doesn’t worry about what has happened over the last six days.”I am not a big believer of momentum from game to game,” Ponting said. “Momentum is all that’s happening in a particular game. I don’t think much of it carries from game to game. I think many of the games that I have played in the past have changed too quickly to be attributed to momentum.”India played very well in the last game, and the injuries we have cost us at Nagpur. We know we have to improve. It’s one thing to talk about, and another thing to go out and do.”Ponting has a point, in that you land in a city, rest for the night, train the next day, play the day after, and travel to the next city. Throw in new pitches, new grounds and new environments and repeat the cycle six times. If anything, it should be difficult to build momentum in such a series. There is hardly any time to brood over a loss either.India, though, see the things differently. “We can say that we lost the first match because we didn’t bat well or bowl well, but we took a lot of positives from that game,” MS Dhoni said. “The way Praveen and Harbhajan batted, the momentum swung towards us slightly, and then we performed well in that second match in all departments. We are paying more attention to the momentum that we have, and are hoping to capitalise on it. We will try to do well this match rather than worrying about injuries in the Australian team.”However, Dhoni indicated he wasn’t overestimating the concept. “What really happens in a long series like this is that it suddenly becomes a five-match series,” he said. “You carry a bit of momentum and confidence, but for every game you have to start from scratch. Every batsman who is in good form has to go out and score runs for the side. At the same time, the players who have not done well in the last couple of games need to come back and perform.”Both teams are treating it differently, and it is perhaps too early in the series to talk of decisive momentum. The scoreline still says 1-1 and, though it may well be a five-match series from now on, Australia – who came into this series without two first-choice men – have lost three more. They will do well to overcome that on Saturday as the series promises a couple of more shifts in momentum.

West Ham: Hammers could go big for Ogbonna replacement, says pundit

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny (via Football Insider) has tipped West Ham to spend ‘serious money’ in the January transfer window following the major injury to Angelo Ogbonna.

The Lowdown: Ogbonna out for the season

The 33-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the Hammers’ 3-2 win over Liverpool on the 7th of November. It is expected that the defender will be out of action for nine months – meaning his season is effectively over.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Italian was instrumental in West Ham’s success this season, having played the full 90 minutes in the first ten league games. He was second only to Kurt Zouma in offsides won per game, showing how perfectly the duo fit together in David Moyes’ defensive structure.

The Latest: A replacement is needed

As a result of Ogbonna’s campaign ending injury, Kenny has claimed (via Football Insider) that the Hammers will speed up their search to replace the defender permanently – instead of bringing in a loan player until the end of the season. He said:

“Ogbonna is such a vital player for them and I do think his experience will be missed.

“I think it’s just obvious to go out and replace a player who is going to be out for so long.

“He’s not the youngest player either, so maybe West Ham could accelerate the process of getting a replacement in instead of getting a loan.

“That would allow them to spend a bit of money. They won’t go cheap if they want to buy a long-term replacement.

“We will have to see what happens but if West Ham want to stay at that end of the table they need to spend serious money.”

The Verdict: A costly but well-timed replacement

Despite the statement that West Ham need to bring in a replacement for Ogbonna, Kenny also said that the Hammers “still have quality players”. Indeedn, fellow centre-backs Zouma and Craig Dawson lead the team in clearances, with 5.4 and 3.4 per game respectively.

However, Ogbonna supersedes both of them when it comes to pass success percentage, with an impressive 85.2% accuracy.

With the 33-year-old’s contract expiring in the summer, this may be the perfect time for the Hammers to ramp up their interest in a long-term replacement, and one who is effective playing the ball out from the back – as the Hammers move up in the world, more and more teams lower down the table will allow them to have the ball as much as possible.

Such a signing will be costly, but it feels like GSB and Moyes may have no other option than to take Kenny’s advice and splash “serious money”.

Everton linked to Pontus Jansson

Everton manager Rafa Benitez could secure a transfer masterclass after being linked with a move for Brentford defender Pontus Jansson in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to The Guardian, the Toffees are one of three Premier League clubs eyeing up a potential swoop for the 30-year-old, with Newcastle United and Leicester City also listed as potential suitors.

With Jansson’s current contract at the Brentford Community Stadium set to expire at the end of the current campaign, an imminent exit could be on the cards as several sides look to secure a cut-price deal.

The report states that: “Pontus Jansson is wanted by Leicester, Newcastle and Everton in January after they were alerted to the Brentford captain’s contract situation.”

Transfer masterclass

Everton’s defence has been extremely porous in the opening 16 games of the top-flight campaign, heavily contributing to their recent run of poor form.

Benitez’s charges have conceded 28 goals so far, the fourth-highest amount in the Premier League, and seven more than relegation-threatened Burnley, highlighting their extensive troubles at the back.

And things could get worse for the Merseyside outfit over the coming months.

Reports have suggested key centre-back Yerry Mina could depart the club during the winter as he seeks pastures new, leaving Everton desperately short of quality at the back, and Benitez will be in desperate need of reinforcements if his proposed exit is confirmed.

With the Merseyside outfit also having to tighten their budget significantly in order to comply with Financial Fair Play restrictions, securing Jansson’s signature for a bargain price would be a masterstroke by the Spanish tactician.

Since arriving in west London back in July 2019, the £4.5m-rated beast has been a key figure in Brentford’s defence, and manager Thomas Frank made no effort to hide his excitement following his arrival.

“Pontus is a top defender who brings immense professionalism, a great attitude, experience, defensive robustness, leadership qualities, and threat from set-pieces to our side,” said Frank upon his unveiling.

“Everyone knows about the Brentford model but to develop the young players we have here, we also need experience and quality in the squad to get the perfect balance.

“To have someone with his CV turn down other offers to join us shows where we stand as a club now.”

After playing a key role in the Bees’ promotion from the Championship last term, Jansson has showcased his quality on the Premier League stage on a consistent basis throughout 2021/22.

The 6 foot 4 colossus has started all 16 of the capital club’s league encounters, averaging 1.4 interceptions, a whopping 4.8 clearances and 0.4 blocks while winning 2.8 aerial duels, as per WhoScored.

Those figures place Jansson in the top three for each metric when compared to his teammates, and illustrate how the Swede could be an extremely astute purchase for Benitez and Everton.

With Mina departing, they will need someone with height and power to add to their ranks and fortunately, those are two attributes the Brentford giant has in abundance.

And, in other news…More misery: Everton could be set for a big blow in January, Rafa would be devastated – opinion

England must pick Wright – Thorpe

Graham Thorpe has called for Luke Wright’s inclusion in Andrew Flintoff’s old No.7 spot

With just a two-day warm-up match left before the England selectors have to finalise the make-up of their side, Graham Thorpe has called for Luke Wright’s inclusion in Andrew Flintoff’s old No. 7 spot. Wright has not yet played a Test for England and has a modest success in his 28 one-day outings so far, but Thorpe felt he was the kind of attacking option England need if they were going to win the series.”He could come in and be an impact bowler. I see him bowling short, aggressive spells of five or six overs, really mixing it up,” Thorpe said at an npower urban cricket event at Lord’s.That would mean playing five batsmen with Matt Prior at six but Thorpe said this was the best option for England: “They have to gamble and go with five bowlers. If you look at it logically, how else are we going to get 20 wickets?”Ian Bell would be the man to miss out, the Test after his first-innings 72 helped England to Ashes victory at the Oval, but Thorpe felt the batting was strong enough to succeed in South African conditions.”Once the Kookaburra ball goes soft there is no swing and if the batsmen are hungry and show enough desire, we should go out and get big runs,” he said. “Morne Morkel has been out of form recently and [Makhaya] Ntini doesn’t have the same zip and pace as before, so if you back yourself to get through the first 20 to 25 overs, there are runs to be made.”Thorpe was part of Michael Vaughan’s England team that won in 2004-05 and he believed there were lessons Andrew Strauss’s men can heed from that experience. “If you get the psychological shift where you make them feel like they’ve got nothing else and they can only lose, that is when you can turn them over,” he said. With concerns over Anderson’s fitness growing, Thorpe admitted it would be a huge blow if he pulled up short. “He’s developed in the last year, he knows when it’s in his favour and when he has to hold it back,” he said. “The one thing he has is the ability to take wickets up front.”Early wickets are the factor Thorpe said will determine the series and he suggested it was something both sides could struggle with. “The main area will be the opening bowlers. If you go and ask the local South Africans, they are not sure their attack can take 20 wickets and it’s probably England’s concern as well. Whichever side takes the most wickets in the first 20 overs will give themselves the best chance of winning the series.”Both sides will get an opportunity at some stage and it depends on whether they are brave enough to take it, that’s where the series will be won or lost. Steyn can do real damage, if he really hits his straps then he can put South Africa in a strong position.”With the opening bowlers and batsmen playing a crucial role, Alastair Cook is under pressure, especially after being earmarked to captain England in Bangladesh if Andrew Strauss opts out of the tour to rest.”Cook does need a good series, he’s got a lot of pressure on him in terms of being labelled for the position,” said Thorpe. “Against the top sides his performances have been below par and he hasn’t consistently scored runs against the top sides. But he could clear all that in one series. If he goes and has a great series his position is solid again.”One thing you can’t doubt about Cook is his mental ability. You have to back that for as long as you can because the mental side of the highest level is what gives you longevity.”
