South Africa has edged out England to be named host nation of the 2009 IPL. The decision was made after a meeting between the IPL commissioner, Lalit Modi, and the Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive, Gerald Majola, in Johannesburg on Tuesday. The IPL also announced that a final schedule for the 59 matches and the host venues for the eight franchises will be released shortly.Cricinfo understands that the IPL’s opening ceremony will be held in Cape Town, and that the defending champions Rajasthan Royals will play the first game. The tournament will commence on April 18, a week later than initially scheduled, and a day after the one-day series between South Africa and Australia ends. Sources said Johannesburg, Durban, Centurion, Port Elizabeth, East London and Cape Town would be the host venues. However, it’s understood that negotiations between the two boards were not as smooth as it was initially expected with England remaining in contention as an active alternative for hosting the IPL during most of Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.South Africa had been considered the favourite to host the IPL’s second season after IPL officials voiced concerns over the effect England’s springtime weather might have on the tournament. England also faced issues in the form of cost, scheduling and the likelihood of conflict between television rights holders. South Africa’s chances were further boosted after the country’s government got actively involved in wooing the IPL, throwing in assurances on security and speedy clearance of visas for players and officials.”A lot of factors were considered by us while evaluating the final choice for the host venue,” N Srinivasan, secretary of the Indian board, said. “However, in the final analysis I think it was the South African weather, which prevailed and tilted the balance in favour of the Rainbow Nation.”David Collier, the ECB chief executive, said he understood the hurdles that would have had to be cleared to stage the tournament in England. “We all recognised the difficulties and logistical issues involved in areas such as security when the G20 is meeting in the UK next week and the climatic challenges,” he said.In the event, the IPL’s decision to move to South Africa has been greeted with relief by the league’s franchises and players. Muttiah Muralitharan, who plays for Chennai Super Kings, said it was the right decision for the league because “the game must go on, else cricket would die”.Why South Africa got the nodThe weather was the most important factor. The IPL realised that rain could seriously affect “as many as 70% of the matches” if the tournament was held in England.Top officials within the South African government and Cricket South Africa gave assurances that the IPL will receive the full red carpet treatment.Less logistical problems as South African domestic season concludes before the IPL’s scheduled start while in England the county season will just get underway. The cost of running the tournament in South Africa would be substantially less than in England.Supersport owns the rights both for the IPL and for international cricket played in South Africa while there would have been a clash between Sky TV and Setanta in England.Vijay Mallya, the owner of Royal Challengers Bangalore, said that though he would have preferred England, the weather had proved a decisive factor. “To be honest, I would have preferred England to South Africa,” Mallya said. “You could have taken one good flight from 5-6 places in India to England and it would have been cheaper. Besides, an average Englishman loves his cricket. The stands there would have been full of crowd. I guess weather conditions clinched the issue for South Africa. In England, there were chances that matches would have been rained off. Both teams sharing the point affects the competitiveness of the event.”There had been much speculation as to where the IPL’s second season would be based after Cricinfo identified South Africa as a possible destination last Friday. Senior officials from the IPL and CSA denied the report at the time, but had since been locked in intense discussions to finalise the unprecedented switch. With the decision now made, the real work begins. Security arrangements – which forced the tournament out of India – will need to be arranged, and an estimated 400 players and officials will require visas and accommodation. In all, 59 matches will be held over a five-week period ending on May 24.With time of the essence, logistical issues delayed the opportunity for a considered response from the ECB, whose chairman, Giles Clarke, and Collier, had been on opposite sides of the world in Australia and Guyana respectively, when contacted by IPL officials on Saturday. The pair reconvened for the first time at Lord’s on Tuesday morning, by which stage discussions with CSA were well underway.”It is very important for world cricket that this tournament is staged, but ultimately it is a matter for the BCCI where it is staged,” Clarke told Cricinfo hours before the IPL decided on South Africa. “We’re happy to help, but if it’s not staged here, we’ve got a great deal to do this season anyway. That is how we see it. It is not a competitive situation from our point of view, at all. It can be staged here, the government is keen support it, but the most important thing is that this tournament goes ahead, wherever it is staged.”England had initially emerged as the preferred venue to host the tournament after a powerful lobby within the BCCI and the Indian team management felt that such a move would help in preparing for the World Twenty20 in June.

Palace’s attacking options are ‘mouth-watering’

Crystal Palace appear to have transformed their fortunes in recent months, with Patrick Vieira’s new-look side already providing their supporters with bags of entertainment in the opening weeks of the campaign.

And journalist Tom Barclay believes the best could still be to come for the capital club, claiming the prospect of seeing Michael Olise, Conor Gallagher, Eberechi Eze, Wilfried Zaha and Odsonne Edouard in the same team is a “mouth-watering” one.

What’s the word?

The quintet are yet to play together due to Eze currently being sidelined with an Achilles injury, although that could soon change as the youngster nears a return to full fitness.

Barclay addressed the possible forward line available to Vieira in a recent interview, stating how the fans would relish the excitement after four years of pragmatism under Roy Hodgson.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “That certainly is mouth-watering for Palace fans, who the majority had had enough of Roy Hodgson’s style after four years.

“As much as they appreciated the stability that came with his approach, they were crying out for something more entertaining, and they’ve already got it with Vieira.”

Crystal Palace fans will be excited

After failing to score in their opening three games of the season under Vieira’s tutelage, Palace have bagged nine in their last five outings, and the attacking players named by Barclay have been heavily involved.

Gallagher got the ball rolling with a brace against West Ham United to rescue a draw at the London Stadium before Zaha got his first of the season from the spot at home to Tottenham Hotspur, with Edouard coming off the bench to net two goals on his Eagles debut.

A 3-0 defeat to Liverpool followed, but Palace returned to form via another Zaha penalty against Brighton and Hove Albion and, Michael Olise also notched his first strike against Leicester City last time out.

The only other Palace player to find the back of the net so far this season is Jeffrey Schlupp, highlighting the importance of the aforementioned stars.

With Eze just weeks away from a return to the first-team setup, it’s certainly an exciting time to be a fan of the south London outfit, and the prospect of him joining an already effective forward line is enough to give the supporters hope of a successful season.

Moody expects tough IPL contest

Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody believes the second edition of the IPL will be more competitive than the first

Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody believes the second edition of the IPL will be more competitive than the first while the team’s captain, Yuvraj Singh, was hopeful his side could go better than the semi-finals this year.”There is no way anybody can pick one team above the other. All the sides were evenly matched,” Moody said in South Africa. “All the teams in the competition are very strong. I think it would be foolish of anyone to try and predict who the favourites or second favourites will be.”Moody picked the Delhi Daredevils, who they will play on April 19 in Cape Town, as one of Punjab’s biggest threats. The teams meet in Cape Town on April 19. “Delhi Daredevils is always a tough game for us. We’ve got them first up and they boast a good international list but also have some very good Indian stars.”Yuvraj was confident of his core base but expressed concern over the fast-bowling stakes. With new signing Jerome Taylor injured in a car accident recently and Sreesanth recovering from a back injury, Punjab have effectively lost five of their frontline players. The Australians Shaun Marsh, James Hopes and Brett Lee will be away on national duty but Punjab are hopeful they will be free for the second half of the IPL.”We have a good team this season. We have a good batting line-up with the likes of [Kumar] Sangakkara, [Mahela] Jayawardene and Shaun Marsh. Besides, we also have Ravi Bopara this year who can also bowl a bit,” said Yuvraj.”The only worry is the pace department. A couple of pacers are coming back from injuries while Sreesanth has been ruled out. But I am confident that the rest of the squad will rise to the occasion.”Yuvraj believed the local Indian community would come out in strong support. “The Indian fan base in South Africa is huge and we are expecting them to turn up and support their city teams,” said Yuvraj. “I am sure that the Punjabi community settled in South Africa will support us. Similarly, those originally from Mumbai would certainly come for Mumbai’s matches. Some Indian fans will also fly down to South Africa.”While the franchise is still awaiting some key players to arrive, Moody said Punjab had been well received in Port Elizabeth. “It’s of great excitement for us to have the opportunity to practice at terrific facilities here in Port Elizabeth. The ground at St George’s is certainly world class, the pitches have been world class and we’ve enjoyed the experience to date,” he said. “That’s particularly so for our Indian players who need to get used to conditions here in South Africa.”Irfan Pathan, whose role as an allrounder will be more significant in the absence of Lee and Hopes, was pleased with the progress shown by the first-timers to South Africa. “There was a big difference between the first and second net practice we had here,” he said. “The batsmen became more comfortable with the local fast bowlers. I’m pretty happy with their progress.”This is my third trip here. So whatever experience I have I’ve already started passing on to a few Indian guys and I’ve seen the difference already.”

'I'm certainly not a frontline spinner' – Clarke

Michael Clarke took 3 for 15 to give Australia a 2-1 series lead against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi but has said that he will never be more than a part-time spinner

Michael Clarke took 3 for 15, including two wickets off successive deliveries, to give Australia a 2-1 series lead against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi but has said that he will never be more than a part-time spinner.Clarke top-scored with 66 to lead Australia to 198 before wrecking Pakistan’s solid start, reducing them from 95 for 2 to 123 for 5. He and offspinner Nathan Hauritz took 5 for 40 between them while Andrew Symonds chipped in with 1 for 41 as Australia won the third ODI by 27 runs.Clarke, however, played down his role with the ball. “In conditions that spin I can do an okay job, that part-time job I guess, but I’m certainly not a frontline spinner,” Clarke told AAP. “I think Nathan Hauritz led the way with the ball and I thought [Andrew Symonds] did a brilliant job as well. I tried to wait as long as possible before I had to bowl, to be honest.”It’s always good to bowl in conditions like that, when the ball’s spinning, obviously it makes it a little bit harder to score. For me it was just about trying to put the ball in a half-decent area and hope some spun and some didn’t and fortunately I had a little bit of luck.”While Australia’s bowlers set up both victories by dismissing Pakistan cheaply, Clarke said the batmen had to improve. “Nobody’s made a hundred yet so I certainly don’t think we’ve performed as well as we’d like with the bat,” he said. “But we’re backing our own ability, we’re working out the most successful way for us individually to play the Pakistani bowlers and we’re backing that to the hilt. I think that’s all you can do in these conditions.”Australia have the chance to wrap up the series in the fourth ODI at Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Spurs U21 gem trains ahead of Vitesse clash

Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Santo may have made his intentions very clear as several first-team stars were missing from training ahead of Thursday evening’s UEFA Europa Conference League clash against Vitesse.

All ten of the outfield players who started the 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday were seemingly given the day off, perhaps in preparation for the weekend’s London derby with West Ham United.

It means we should expect a large degree of rotation when Spurs travel to Arnhem to face the Dutch top-flight outfit later today.

Amongst those that did train at Hotspur Way on Wednesday were some of the club’s promising youngsters, including goalscoring midfielder Harvey White, who made his first start for the Lilywhites in their FA Cup win over non-league minnows Marine last season.

Some senior pros like Dele Alli are surely in line to start at the GelreDome but perhaps it’s a good opportunity to hand some of these exciting prospects some experience when it really counts.

White seems primed to feature for the first-team again, particularly after a successful loan spell with Portsmouth last season, who tried to keep hold of him for the coming campaign but for Nuno’s involvement.

During his time at Fratton Park, Pompey boss Danny Cowley waxed lyrical about his potential.

“Harvey is going to be a good player and got real maturity beyond his years. He’s a really intelligent footballer. He watches loads of football, understands it and gets it,” he told The News.

“You only have to tell him an instruction once. He’s like a sponge and you’ll tell him something once and then he’ll be doing it. He’s so easy to coach, a coach’s dream.”He’s got a great attitude, good pitch coverage now we’re trying to get him used to the combative nature of the transitional game in League One he’s probably not used to in development football.”Across the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, the 5 foot 6 White has provided three goals and three assists, proving to be a crucial option in Wayne Burnett’s side.As per WhoScored, the 20-year-old averaged 3.4 tackles, two shots and 1.6 key passes every 90 minutes in League One last season, which suggests he’s a box-to-box type who could fill that spot in midfield over Alli, who has underperformed as of late.Nuno must take a punt on White in the Netherlands this evening.

Everton: Toffees linked with Filip Djuricic

Everton are one of the clubs who are interested in Sassuolo’s Filip Djuricic, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

The lowdown

Significantly, his contract is up at the end of this season, and unless Sassuolo can reach an agreement with the 29-year-old soon, they may come under pressure to sell in January. That may be their only way to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.

The Serbian has featured in all nine of their Serie A matches so far this season, starting eight (via WhoScored), and he has averaged 1.9 dribbles, 1.8 shots and 1.1 key passes per 90 minutes for Sassuolo this term. For context, no Everton player boasts more than 1.2 dribbles per match up to this point in the season, with only Demarai Gray averaging more than one per game at Goodison Park.

The latest

Calciomercato claimed that there are three Premier League clubs on the trail of Djuricic.

Those are Everton, West Ham United – managed by former Blues boss David Moyes, of course – and struggling Southampton.

The verdict

Djuricic is valued at £8.1m by Transfermarkt, but the interested parties could look to avoid a transfer fee altogether by pursuing a pre-contract agreement.

He would appear better suited to the 4-2-3-1 that West Ham play rather than Rafael Benitez’s 4-4-1-1 given his capacity to play in the three positions behind the striker, but that’s not to say that a move to Merseyside is unrealistic.

His performance metrics certainly suggest that he could add plenty of verve to Everton’s attack, not least in terms of beating opponents one-on-one.
