Gerrard must make Brandon Barker decision

Steven Gerrard has a key decision to make over the future of Rangers winger Brandon Barker…  What happened?

According to Rangers News, the 24-year-old was expected to leave Ibrox on loan before the end of the summer transfer window.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and Football Insider reported that the club told him he could find a loan move or permanent exit on deadline day.

The winger failed to secure a deadline day switch and is now in limbo at Ibrox, having been left out of the Gers’ Europa League squad and not being in Gerrard’s current Premiership plans.

Gerrard faces decision on Barker

Gerrard is now in a position where he needs to take charge and make a crucial decision regarding what to do with Barker. It would be a waste to see the winger kicking his heels and doing nothing until January, so the Rangers boss needs to decide whether he wants to allow him to play for the B team and/or first team or have him do nothing for four months.

Rangers B have an SPFL Trust Trophy clash against Ayr United on Wednesday and Barker is eligible to feature in the game. Gerrard must allow the 24-year-old to feature in it in order to gain some match fitness and show that he has the quality to be a first team option further down the line.

His performance in this game, if he is allowed to play, could determine what happens with him between now and January. Given that he is out of contract next summer, January will be the club’s final chance to recoup some money for the former Manchester City man and giving him some game-time leading up to the transfer window could drum up some interest in his services.

Commenting on Barker and Jordan Jones previously, Gerrard hailed the pair as exciting players who can provide quality in the final third.

He said: “Last year I didn’t feel we had enough in the final third. The idea this year was to build a squad with exciting players who can open the door in different ways.

“Jordan Jones and Brandon Barker open the door in one-v-one situations then provide crosses or cut in to score goals.”

This shows that Gerrard had faith in Barker at the start of his career at Ibrox and maybe he could still have the potential to be a success. He scored three goals and provided four assists in 22 games on loan at Oxford last season, having scored twice in 10 Premiership matches during the first half of the campaign for Rangers.

Giving him a few opportunities in the league between now and January could be worthwhile for the Gers for multiple reasons. Firstly, it allows him to show that he has improved since the start of last season and it could open the door for him to work his way into Gerrard’s plans, but it also gives interested clubs a recent set of performances to analyse and make decisions upon – potentially helping him to secure a transfer.

Ewan Otoo is one to watch out for at Celtic

Celtic are blessed with a host of promising young players at the moment.

Their B team are taking part in the Lowland League for the first time and it would appear as though at long last, their stars of tomorrow are gaining the minutes they need.

On the chalkboard

One of the biggest problems behind the scenes at Celtic in the last few years has been the lack of attention put towards academy players.

Neil Lennon neglected the younger individuals in the team last term and even when the going got though, he failed to hand opportunities to figures like Cameron Harper, Karamoko Dembele and Adam Montgomery.

John Kennedy eventually gave the final two players a chance and they both took their moments in the limelight well.

Dembele scored in the final weeks of the campaign but has been injured since Ange Postecoglou came through the door.

The Australian was quick to comment after being given the Hoops job that he wanted to give more responsibility to homegrown players and that has been evident in the way he’s trusted the likes of Montgomery and Dane Murray.

It speaks volumes about Celtic’s options in defence that they’ve had to play, though, especially the latter.

He was rewarded with his first-team debut after Nir Bitton was sent off in the Champions League and did no wrong.

Bitton’s form in the early parts of the season has been extremely questionable. Not only was he given his marching orders against Midtjylland but he was also at fault for Hearts’ winner on the opening weekend of the Premiership campaign.

The Israeli has rarely been seen since that moment but it’s not just Murray who should leapfrog him in the pecking order, Ewan Otoo should as well.

A centre-back by trade, the 19-year-old has captained the reserves and although he’s not played for the senior side yet, looks like one to watch as the season plays out.

Otoo spent a period of time on loan at Clyde last term where he was given a fine appraisal by Danny Lennon for his performances.

The manager commented: “Ewan is a young boy with fantastic energy, he’s trying to make his mark in the game at that level, so he will certainly get the experience of that.

“What he does have is a terrific attitude, for a very young boy he’s years ahead in terms of maturation, and is a very strong, powerful boy.”

What’s so striking about the young defender is his ability to get forward. He can play out from the back and is also capable of playing at left-back.

That’s something he did on a regular basis in League One last term, where he picked up an extremely eye-catching assist against Forfar.

Otoo received the ball on the left and then advanced between two defenders before driving to the byline and laying the ball on a plate for his teammate.

Versatility is extremely key and with the Hoops lacking senior options on the left side of defence, he could earn a breakthrough there.

Failing that, he certainly deserves to be ahead of Bitton in the centre-back pecking order. The experience he gained of first-team football last term should stand him in very good stead for a Parkhead breakthrough.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has appointed former batsman Mark Greatbatch as an advisor to the national selection panel. Greatbatch, who also coaches the elite emerging players of the domestic side Central Districts, will monitor the progress of players in domestic cricket.Glenn Turner, the current selection panel manager, said Greatbatch’s inputs would help the selectors maintain a comprehensive view of players across the country.”Mark has wide experience of playing and coaching at home and abroad,” he said. “He will be getting around the grounds to keep an eye on the form of players coming through – his advice will be a huge asset to the selection process.”Greatbatch, who played for New Zealand between 1988 and 1996, has also had stints as coach and academy director at Warwickshire. He said he was was excited about the new role and was keen to help build depth in the top levels of the game.”There’s a lot of young, exciting talent coming through the state competitions right now,” he said. “Part of my role will be to help identify and develop that talent so that there’s a strong pool of players knocking hard on the door for national selection.”In a similar development, Central Districts coach Dermot Reeve will be joining the New Zealand squad as bowling coach for the two Twenty20 matches against West Indies, the first of which will be played on Friday.Team coach Andy Moles said Reeve’s reputation for flair and innovation, coupled with his experience in international limited-overs competitions, would add strength to the team. “Dermot’s experience as a coach and as a top level bowler will bring extra depth and focus to our preparation for these games,” said Moles. “He is a good example of us bringing in talented coaches to broaden and stimulate new thinking with our players.”Reeve played for England as an allrounder between 1991 and 1996, including three Tests – all against New Zealand – and 29 one day internationals. He has experience in New Zealand’s domestic circuit as well after being appointed Central Districts coach in July this year. The team is currently at the top of the State Championship rankings at the halfway point of the 2008-09 season.

Saiu do portão, vamos frequentar qualquer igreja.

A maioria é gente boa.

Desde a assinatura do contrato! Bateram no fundo do poço e recomeçaram.

Pouco. Não vejo muita mudança no time.

Dane Scarlett: Tottenham’s rare diamond

Tottenham Hotspur gem Dane Scarlett could have a big future in north London and he may well play a part during the 2021/22 campaign.

The 17-year-old academy prospect has now played five times for the senior side, including 90 minutes against Portuguese outfit Pacos de Ferreira in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying stage.

His form for the young Lilywhites has certainly caught the eye, having bagged three goals in six appearances at U23 level, on top of an impressive 23 goals and four assists for the U18s, via Transfermarkt.

Spurs fans have every right to remain cautious but Scarlett is a talent they should be hugely excited about.

For every Harry Kane, there is a Cameron Lancaster, but the teenage sensation is different. He’s something special and under Nuno Santo, he could well become a first-team star.

Given the 28-year-old’s arduous transfer saga in the summer and reports suggesting that the new head coach wanted to play two up-top, Scarlett could soon see his game time increase at the club, particularly as they still remain in all domestic and European competitions.

Rotation will be key and Kane remains their only senior centre-forward, so it would not be a surprise to see more of the emerging Hotspur Way prodigy throughout the current campaign.

Scarlett became the youngest-ever player to feature for the north Londoners last season and he’s someone that former manager Jose Mourinho regularly praised in the press.

After an assist off the bench in their Europa League clash with Wolfsberger AC, the ‘Special One’ told BT Sport (via The Athletic):

“He is a diamond, a kid with incredible potential. He has worked many times with the first team and that gives him a different personality. He is still 16, 17 soon (in March) and I believe next season he will be a first-team squad player because he has a lot of talent.”

Scarlett has even drawn comparisons to Marcus Rashford, who Mourinho managed at Old Trafford, so this sort of analysis shouldn’t be taken lightly.

“He is going to be a fantastic player and I hope everything around him goes well. He is a striker, a number nine, I have been playing him from the sides similar to Marcus Rashford and he is very clever,” he added.

It’s not every day that a promising talent of this nature comes up through the Spurs system. He is one rare and exciting prospect that should have the Lilywhites faithful super excited to see more.

This season could well be Scarlett’s time to shine.

AND in other news, £14.4m-rated dud’s Spurs days are surely numbered after Nuno’s latest major call…

Symonds apologises for McCullum comment

Andrew Symonds has delivered a public statement of apology for his “a lump of s…” remark about New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum

Andrew Symonds has apologised publicly for his “a lump of s…” remark about the New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum. While Symonds will have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to learn whether he will be punished by Cricket Australia for the incident, he has received support from Ricky Ponting, who said the troubled allrounder was essential to Australia’s future plans.”I wish to sincerely apologise to Brendon McCullum for my comments during the radio interview with Roy and HG on Friday afternoon,” a statement from Symonds said. “My intentions for this interview were light-hearted and my comments no way reflect the respect that I have for McCullum both on and off the field.”I understand how this has been received differently to the way in which I intended to express myself and for that I am extremely sorry. I wish Brendon nothing but success in his cricket and for the future.” Symonds’ offensive comment came when he was discussing McCullum’s signing with New South Wales for the final of the domestic Twenty20 competition.Ponting said he was interested in hearing Symonds’ views. “I’d like to have a good conversation with him about the whole situation. As part of the leadership group in the Australian team, it’s part of my job to do that,” Ponting told . “I know at CA, James Sutherland and Michael Brown have been out of the office and I think they’re meeting on the whole scenario on Tuesday, so by then we’ll have a much clearer picture.”I’d like to consider, if I was in that situation, I wouldn’t have done that. So Andrew’s going to have a look at that radio interview and work out for himself if he’s done something wrong. He’s not part of our current set-up at the moment, and I don’t think there’s ever been anything in place to say that he can’t actually go out and have a drink. Does he need more rehab? That’s up to him and his counsellor to work out.”Ponting hoped the matter would be resolved swiftly. “He has been [vital] for us over the last three or four seasons in one-day cricket and, in the last two in Tests, he’s been a vital cog in our side,” he said. “No one can ever doubt his cricket ability, talent and match-winning abilities. So hopefully everything keeps progressing with him and his fitness and we can get to the bottom of this issue, move on and let him worry about his cricket.”While the New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan said he expected his Australian counterparts to ‘”do the right thing”, McCullum was happy to let the moment pass. “Mate, people are entitled to their opinion and I certainly wasn’t offended by it at all,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do about it. I was over here [in Australia] to enjoy the occasion and certainly did that and it was just a great game to be a part of. I’m not worried what people have to say and certainly not offended by it at all.”The radio comment is the latest in a series of incidents involving Symonds, the most notable of which was him being axed from the Australian squad in Darwin for going fishing, and a pub altercation after his Test comeback in Brisbane. Symonds had also admitted that alcohol played a part in his poor attitude in 2008 and getting cut from the squad in Darwin was the wake-up call he needed to address his behaviour.Symonds, who is recovering from knee surgery, will have a chance to prove his fitness for an international comeback during Queensland’s Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia at the Gabba from Friday. He was picked in the side alongside Ashley Noffke and Chris Swan, who have also been struggling with injuries, and the 19-year-old debutant Scott Walter.Queensland squad Chris Simpson (capt), Ryan Broad, Lee Carseldine, Ryan Harris, Chris Hartley, Nick Kruger, Martin Love, Ashley Noffke, Nathan Reardon, Chris Swan, Andrew Symonds, Scott Walter.

Leeds: Phil Hay makes Marcelo Bielsa claim after West Ham defeat

Marcelo Bielsa was desperately urging youngster Charlie Cresswell to score a goal in Leeds United’s defeat to West Ham, according to Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds suffer another loss

The Whites’ poor start to the season continued on Saturday, with the Hammers leaving Elland Road with a dramatic 2-1 victory, following Michail Antonio’s late winner.

It means Leeds are still without a Premier League win in 2021/22, with fans growing increasingly frustrated six games in.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Hay makes interesting claim

It appears as though the pressure is starting to show on Bielsa, with The Athletic‘s Hay claiming that the manager was shouting at young defender Cresswell to provide some attacking inspiration late in the game:

“As the minutes of stoppage time counted down, Marcelo Bielsa and the coaches around him began gesticulating at defender Charlie Cresswell.

“Go forward, they urged him. Abandon the defence and get into the West Ham United box. Find a goal from somewhere.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-17/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Bielsa under pressure

After such an impressive first season in the Premier League, in which Leeds finished ninth, they are now being questioned for the first time back in the top-flight.

It is very early days, of course, but there are signs of strain showing for Bielsa, with his late antics perhaps proof of that.

There is no great reason for panic and the manager certainly has plenty of credit in the bank with fans and the club’s hierarchy, but Leeds’ current rut needs to end as soon as possible or they could really find themselves in a relegation fight as the weeks pass.

In other news, one Leeds player has suffered another injury blow. Find out who it is here.
