ICC will decide Zimbabwe's Test future – Mali

ICC president Ray Mali has said that while the timing for Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket is up to them, the final decision will be made by the ICC

It seems that the ICC might have finally accepted that all is not well inside Zimbabwe. In an interview with the Zimbabwe Independent, ICC president Ray Mali, a staunch supporter of Zimbabwe and its board, admitted that the political situation was a cause for concern. As the presidential election re-run approaches, the levels of civil unrest and tension have escalated, and Mali said that presented its own issues. “The ICC recognises that the conditions in Zimbabwe present a unique challenge to both Zimbabweans and to those visiting the country,” he told the paper. “The ICC encourages the maintenance of cricketing ties between Zimbabwe and other ICC members as exposure is the only way that the players of Zimbabwe can improve.”However, the ICC cannot control the views of members and, more pertinently, the views of the governments of those members, and ultimately cannot force A sides to visit the country or play against Zimbabwe as A side interaction does not fall under the Future Tours Programme. The ICC will continue to seek to encourage such interaction on an ongoing basis.”Zimbabwe have tried to engage A sides in matches, but with three Full Members – Australia, England and New Zealand – unwilling to play them for political reasons, and West Indies A declining to tour there on safety grounds, their choices are limited. The report states that the ICC wants to see Zimbabwe win 80% of games against A teams before there is any chance of them being readmitted to Test cricket. In six matches against South Africa, India and Sri Lanka A sides they have won only once”The Zimbabwe team is inexperienced and so playing against players who have either played a great deal of high-level cricket already or who are on the cusp of doing so is obviously going to be a challenging assignment,” Mali insisted. “On that basis it would have been unreasonable to expect the Zimbabwe team to sweep all before it.”What the matches have done is to provide the players with experience that will help them to develop so that as and when the chance to return to Test cricket comes then it will not be such an enormous leap. That is exactly why the A team matches are important and the ICC encourages its members to take part in more of these to further aid Zimbabwe cricket.”While Zimbabwe Cricket has done well to keep the domestic competitions running in the last two months, the deteriorating political situation, as well as widespread food and fuel shortages, makes it increasingly unlikely that even those countries who have stood by Zimbabwe will feel inclined to risk a tour in the foreseeable future. India were scheduled to visit for some full ODIs this month but that was postponed indefinitely, ostensibly because of India’s intense itinerary.Mali confirmed that the ICC would leave the issue of Zimbabwe’s return to Test cricket to their own board to recommend, but that the final decision would be with the ICC’s executive.”The ICC is kept informed by Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Peter Chingoka – and Norman Arendse, president of Cricket South Africa, which has offered to support in any way it can – at every ICC board meeting,” he said. “Chingoka has undertaken to report to the board as and when it is felt that Zimbabwe is ready for a return to the Test arena and if he made such a report then the ICC board would consider its merits.”

Everton transfer update on Rodriguez

Many Everton fans have been left fuming as an exit rumour emerges on James Rodriguez.

As per football journalist and transfer expert Pedro Almeida, the Colombia international is heading for a move to Italy before the summer window shuts at the end of this month.

Rodriguez was a key player for the Goodison Park club in the 2020/21 season, scoring six goals and supplying a further nine assists in 26 games across all competitions (Transfermarkt), and he would be deeply missed should he make the move away from Merseyside.

He adds that extra bit of creativity and spark in midfield, and with only Gylfi Sigurdsson supplying more assists for Everton in 2020/21, the Colombian would not be easy to replace as the end of the transfer window draws nearer.

These Toffees supporters fumed as the exit rumour on Rodriguez was shared by The Everton End on their Twitter page, with one Blue claiming that the 30-year-old is a ‘quality’ player and another deriding manager Rafael Benitez as a ‘clown’ if he were to sanction the playmaker’s exit:

“Played 20+ for us which isn’t to bad. And he’s still comfortably our best player. Take his creativity out and we don’t replace him. We will struggle a lot more to score.”

Boa fase!

Justin Langer, the former Australian batsman, has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia, the country’s third-highest civilian honour whose recipients include Keith Miller, Glenn McGrath, Mark Waugh and Dean Jones.Langer, who retired from Test cricket after the 2006-07 Ashes, has been honoured “for service to cricket as a player and mentor and to the community, particularly through fund-raising and support for a wide range of charities, including children’s leukaemia and cancer research organisations.”Reacting to the news that his name figured in the Queen’s birthday honours list, Langer said: “It’s a great honour. I’ve lived such a privileged lifestyle and I’ve literally lived my dream playing cricket for the last 20 years.”Langer reflected on his cricketing life. “The opportunities that have come about because of what I’ve achieved in cricket have been quite mind-blowing. People I’ve met, places I’ve been – it’s been extraordinary. It sounds a bit corny but I write in my journal every night and I start up every night with ‘I’m the luckiest person in the world’. I respect how lucky I’ve been and how privileged I am.”Langer, 37, played 105 Tests and scored 7696 runs at 45.27, and with Matthew Hayden, formed one of the most successful opening pairs. He was also the top run-getter in 2004, when he amassed 1481 runs.

Amla and Kallis power South Africa

Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis launched South Africa’s tour of England in ominous fashion, as a depleted Somerset attack was put to the sword in front of a packed Sunday crowd at Taunton. Both men posted scores in excess of 150, while their 216-run partnership for the third wicket was their third-highest in the past 12 months, following their stands of 330 at Johannesburg and 220 at Centurion, against New Zealand in November.Such was their dominance, especially during the final session, that neither man could be prised from the crease in conventional fashion. Amla was eventually run out for 172 by Zander de Bruyn at point, after Kallis called him through for a non-existent single, but it was Kallis’s own departure that gave the South African camp the most cause for concern.Having brought up his hundred from 125 balls, Kallis treated Somerset’s bowlers with disdain thereafter. He flogged Steffan Jones on the up over cover for a vast six, and reached 152 from 153 balls when he drilled Andrew Caddick – armed with the new ball – through extra cover for his 21st four. Caddick’s response, however, was a bouncer that struck Kallis a fearful blow on the elbow.Though Kallis continued batting after lengthy treatment from the physio, Shane Jabaar – and even added two more fours from consecutive balls – he was clearly in some pain when he pulled off his gloves and retired hurt in the same Caddick over, for 160 from 157 balls. A spokesman for the South African team said that Kallis had suffered “bruising but no structural damage”, although he has 12 days to recover before the first Test at Lord’s on July 10, and the reports at the close of play are that he will be fine. The injury took the gloss off a comprehensive batting display by a South African side that will have been encouraged by England’s feeble showing in the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand on Sunday. They have arrived in the country full of intent, and their side for today’s fixture featured nine of the probable starting line-up at Lord’s – the exceptions being the injured captain, Graeme Smith, and the rested strike bowler, Dale Steyn. Somerset, by contrast, chose to omit six of their regular first-team players, including the captain, Justin Langer, and Marcus Trescothick. In Smith’s absence, Ashwell Prince won the toss and chose to bat, although the day did not begin quite as South Africa would have intended. Caddick, playing in only his third first-class fixture of the season following a persistent back problem, pitched full and straight and trapped Neil McKenzie with the very first ball of the match.

It was a false dawn for Somerset, however. Amla and JP Duminy combined in a 146-run stand for the second wicket, and batted all the way through to lunch without giving even a hint of a chance. Duminy is unlikely to feature in the Tests at this stage of the tour, but he showed his class with a boundary-laden 64. He went to lunch on 59 not out, but in the second over after the resumption, Caddick struck again, inducing a glove down the leg-side, for Craig Kieswetter to complete a good diving catch.Amla, however, made no such error. He had required 19 balls to get off the mark, but that consolidation period proved to be time well spent. He brought up his half-century from 63 balls with a top-edged pull for four off Jones – arguably his only false stroke of the day – and hurtled to his hundred in just 42 more balls, with a blaze of boundaries off the legspinner, Mike Munday – a lofted drive for six over wide long-on, and three further fours, all from consecutive deliveries.Caddick rotated his resources as best he could, but with Charl Willoughby, Alfonso Thomas and Ben Phillips all missing from Somerset’s first-choice attack, he had little firepower to respond to South Africa’s onslaught. Kallis had a moment of good fortune when Caddick squared him up and a thick edge flew through the slips for four, and he was later dropped on 113 by Kieswetter in Wes Durston’s first over. Durston’s next ball, however, was smacked dismissively over the covers, and for the remainder of his innings, he played a stroke virtually every ball – even after he had been thwacked on the elbow. After Kallis’s departure, AB de Villiers and Prince settled in for a 45-run stand that carried South Africa to an imposing 455 runs in the day. Kallis’s setback aside, they have started their tour as emphatically as any side could hope.

Wolves must sign Kang-in Lee

Wolves took to the transfer market last summer with a ruthless eye. They spent an eye-catching sum of money, paying over £50m for the acquisitions of Nelson Semedo and Fabio Silva.

However, this year has been completely different for the Old Gold.Huge fees haven’t been paid with spending limited at Molineux. Trincao has been added to their ranks on a loan deal but beyond that, not much will catch the eye in terms of incomings. One player they were linked with heading into the summer was Valencia’s Kang-in Lee. Yet, with a release clause of £71m, a deal looked completely off the table.Fresh reports dictate that he may be available for just €10m (£8.5m) and if he is, Wolves must seek out a deal.An attacking midfielder by trade, Lee is one of the most exciting prospects in South Korean football.Dubbed “spectacular” by Valencia great Dario Felman, he made 27 appearances for Valencia last term, scoring just one goal but providing four assists for his troubles during an impressive season. Also capable of playing on the wing, there are plenty of strings to a bow that cuts through opposition defences in devastating fashion.Compared to David Silva, he was in particularly good form during the Tokyo Olympics. Lee found the net on three occasions for his country, demonstrating that he has the qualities to thrive on the biggest of stages.Speaking about his game previously, Valencia academy director Luis Vicente Mateo said: “He is willing to learn every day, regardless of whether he is in first or second-team training. He is a player with outstanding talent.”His numbers aren’t the greatest just yet but Wolves have proven themselves to be the perfect club for young players coming through. You only need to look at Pedro Neto who captured the imagination with some dazzling performances last term, ending the campaign as the club’s Player of the Season and their joint-top scorer. What’s particularly exciting about Lee’s style of play is his close touch control. The 20-year-old completed 1.6 dribbles per game last term – a tally that would have placed him fourth in the Wolves squad.Considering just how young he is, those numbers will only improve. He must be at the top of Wolves’ priorities for now.AND in other news, Wolves eye swoop for “tenacious” 37-cap warrior, he could be their new Ruben Neves…

Após dois dias de atividades integrais, a equipe cruz-maltina receberá o Sampaio Corrêa, time que disputa a Série B1 do Campeonato Carioca e é localizado em Saquarema (RJ), para um jogo-treino. Hasenhutttl makes Saints transfer claim

Despite kicking off the new Premier League season with a 3-1 defeat against Everton on Saturday, it seems as if Southampton are planning on making just one more signing this summer after Ralph Hasenhuttl shared the club’s transfer plans.

What’s the word?

According to Hampshire Live, Hasenhuttl is planning for just one more new addition to his squad before the transfer window shuts – a centre-back to replace Jannik Vestergaard, after his move to Leicester City earlier this month.

Journalist Tom Leach wrote in a recent piece for Hampshire Live, that:

“Southampton have just one piece on transfer business to do between now and the end of the month, with a central defender who can play as a number six (defensive midfield) considered to be the ideal target.”

Do Southampton need more signings?

Southampton have signed six players so far this window, with Theo Walcott, Romain Perraud, Dynel Simeu, Tino Livramento and Adam Armstrong joining on permanent deals, whilst Armando Broja has arrived on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Of those, only Walcott is over the age of 24, which suggests that Hasenhuttl is sticking to his transfer plans of signing younger players, although you could argue that the Saints now have a very inexperienced squad, especially when considering the departures of Ryan Bertrand and Vestergaard.

Last season saw the Saints struggle immensely due to injury problems and a serious lack of squad depth and you worry that could be the case once again this season, especially when considering the options Hasenhuttl has in defence.

Only new signing Perraud is a natural left-back, with Moussa Djenepo featuring there regularly in pre-season, which seems a very risky move by the Austrian, and Saints fans would be less than happy if the Malian was forced to play there in the Premier League should the Frenchman be missing.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Although signing a quality centre-back, who can also play defensive-midfield, would undoubtedly improve the squad, you feel that Southampton need more than one new addition to the squad if they are to comfortably avoid relegation this season.

And, in other news… Semmens should seal Southampton swoop for centre-back tipped to “explode”
