Tottenham handed Kounde boost

Tottenham have potentially been handed a boost in the race to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla…

What’s the talk?

According to journalist Dean Jones, as relayed by The Express, Manchester United are not actively pursuing a deal for Spurs target Jules Kounde. Jones has claimed that the centre-back is not at the top of their list, with Raphael Varane and Pau Torres the two main targets for United.

The Express claims that Tottenham and Arsenal are both showing an interest in the French central defender as they look to bolster their squads ahead of next season. Sevilla reportedly want £50m for their star defender this summer.

Nuno needs him

Fabio Paratici has been handed a key boost with this latest update. It means that they may not face competition from Manchester United for his signature, which could improve their chances of being able to sign him.

The Red Devils have Champions League football on offer and Spurs may not have been able to compete with that, as they only qualified for the Europa Conference League.

Nuno Santo needs a new centre-back to bolster his squad following his arrival at the club. Toby Alderweireld reportedly wants to leave the club this summer and Spurs are said to be willing to facilitate his wish if the right offer comes in. They are also open to bids for Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez as Santo prepares to restructure Tottenham’s defence in the coming months.

This means that there could be a gap, or two, for a central defender to come in. Kounde could be an excellent choice to strengthen the side and potentially replace Alderweireld given his performances in Spain. La Liga expert Euan McTear recently described Kounde as “special” and said that he has been improving throughout the season with Sevilla whilst playing in the Champions League.

He told Transfer Tavern:

“He’s only gotten better this season, especially in the Champions League. He’s had some good performances there, too.

“He’s still so young, he’s got energy, great positioning too. All the centre-backs, not just in Spain I think, but if you look around Europe, he’s got to be one of the highest prospects.

“To be playing for France who have countless centre-backs, if he’s able to get himself into that group, then, yeah, he’s pretty special.”

The £73k-per-week beast averaged a superb WhoScored rating of 7.01 in La Liga for Sevilla. Alderweireld, meanwhile, achieved the highest score out of any Tottenham centre-back in the Premier League with 6.86, suggesting that the Frenchman could be an upgrade on Nuno’s current best defensive option.

At the age of 22, Kounde also has plenty of room for growth and could be a key player for Spurs for years to come if they are able to bring him in this summer.

AND in other news, Paratici must avoid error with “brave” £24k-p/w beast, Spurs fans would be gutted…

England take command as Trescothick shines

Marcus Trescothick has an unenviable record of finishing on the losing sidewhenever he has scored a century in international cricket

Ralph Dellor31-May-2002Marcus Trescothick has an unenviable record of finishing on the losing sidewhenever he has scored a century in international cricket. Even with a dramatic intervention from Muttiah Muralitharan after tea on day two of the second npower Test at Edgbaston, it will be a major upset if Trescothick has the gloss taken off his latest effort. At the close of play, England had a lead of 239 with five wickets in hand and a good forecast for Saturday in both the meteorological and cricketing senses. The day began with Trescothick and Michael Vaughan extending their openingpartnership to 92 with attractive strokeplay from both batsmen. Trescothick was perhaps fortunate to survive a convincing lbw shout by Charitha Buddika, but otherwise the batsmen were taking advantage of a quicker outfield, a benign pitch and an unthreatening attack. It was something of a surprise when Vaughan lost his wicket, even if the bowler concerned is never far from springing a shock. Muralitharan was still feeling his way when Vaughan went to sweep, got a top edge and was caught by Sanath Jayasuriya at backward square leg. He was out for 46 and could only look on from the pavilion as Trescothick and Mark Butcher built a record stand for England against Sri Lanka.Butcher was a little diffident against Muralitharan at the outset, but inspired, no doubt, by the assured authority of Trescothick at the other end, he blossomed so that he contributed fully to the partnership. Trescothick was in imperious mood, taking two fours in an over off Jayasuriya before helping himself to a brace of straight sixes. He helped himself to another off Aravinda de Silva to bring up his 150, and it was difficult to see how he might get out. However, he was on the stroke of tea when he clipped a ball from Chaminda Vaas off his legs to short mid-wicket. His masterful innings of 161 had come from 232 balls in a stay of nearly five hours, during which he hit 23 fours and those three sixes.Muralitharan has the ability to turn the ball on any sort of surface, but hesuddenly found a couple that could yet have an impact on the match andcertainly on the series. The first accounted for Butcher just six runs short of a century. It pitched a good foot outside leg stump and clipped the top of off, which was quite a ball even allowing for a wide angle of delivery.Next up was Nasser Hussain. The right-hander got one that was wide of off stump, went to kick it away while stretching right forward, but it brushed the pad as it turned between his legs to take leg stump. The England lead at that point was 179, so it hardly represented a crisis inthe course of the innings. Nevertheless, there was a need for Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe to consolidate in the closing hour of the extended day. Stewart had never really looked at ease, and it was not entirely unexpected when Muralitharan produced a ball that leapt off his pad and brushed his glove on the way to short leg.Andrew Flintoff just had time to unfurl some murderous strokes while Thorpesome equally attractive if less powerful shots to deny Muralitharan any further glory – at least during an absorbing second day’s play.

– É válido, tudo no jogo é válido.

Leeds United: Paddy Kenny drops Kalvin Phillips verdict

Leeds United pundit Paddy Kenny believes that Leeds United would be taking a “massive risk” in starting Kalvin Phillips in the opening weeks of the Premier League season, due to his involvement in UEFA EURO 2020 [Football Insider].

The Lowdown: Leeds United prepare for 2021/22

Though acquiring high-profile talent in the transfer market will certainly be on Marcelo Bielsa’s mind this summer, maintaining the condition of existing key players will also be of paramount importance to the 65-year-old.

One man who will need to be routinely evaluated is 25-year-old Phillips, due to how indispensable he has become at Elland Road – the Whites lost seven of the nine league matches he missed last season.

The Latest: Kenny urges caution after Phillips’ “ridiculous” effort

In an interview with Football Insider, 43 year-old Kenny revealed his concern over the lack of recovery time Phillips may have between international duty and the start of the campaign, claiming his running at the tournament was ‘ridiculous’:

“He needs a rest. Have you seen some of his running stats for the tournament? They are ridiculous.

“He’s an unbelievably fit player. But I think after losing the final, mentally, he’ll need a break.

“It’s a massive risk for any player that’s been involved in the Euros to come straight back in. You’re risking injury, either later on or at the start of the season.

“You’ve got to look at the bigger picture, you can rest him and have him for the rest of the season or rush him for the start of the season and he gets an injury that rules him out for ages.” [Football Insider]

The Verdict: Phillips needs rest

Correctly, the 43-year-old points out the imperative need for the England midfielder to get some time off to recuperate after a busy summer of international football.

Dominating the middle of the park for the Three Lions in the tournament, Phillips made 32 ball recoveries in seven games for his native country [UEFA EURO 2020].

In 2020/21, he was ever present for Leeds United, registering four goal contributions from 31 appearances; one goal and three assists [Transfermarkt].

Never shy of a challenge, the Leeds-born Phillips successfully carried out 2.6 tackles per game in the Premier League across the season [WhoScored].

Looking ahead, the Whites should look to do whatever it takes to keep the Thorp Arch academy product free from injury, and if that means resting him for the first couple of matches then so be it.

In other news, a defender is close to sealing an Elland Road exit.
