Bichel's first one-day ton accounts for Glamorgan

Andrew Bichel scored his maiden one-day century to help Worcestershireto a five-wicket Benson & Hedges Cup win over Glamorgan

Richard Thomas of the South Wales Evening Post02-May-2001Andrew Bichel scored his maiden one-day century to help Worcestershireto a five-wicket Benson & Hedges Cup win over Glamorgan. The Queensland all-rounder, a veteran of 17 One-Day Internationals, scored a quickfire 100 out of 152 to win the Gold Award and putWorcestershire on their way to the quarter-finals.Bichel’s century arrived off only 116 balls and included 11 fours and asix. More significantly, 46 of the 30-year-old’s second 50 wasaccumulated in boundaries. He came to the wicket with Worcestershire in some trouble at 3-1 butweathered some accurate Glamorgan bowling before setting his sidein sight of the 229 to win.Although he was run out 14 overs from the end, Vikram Solanki and thenDavid Leatherdale and Nick Boulton saw Worcestershire home with 16 ballsto spare.Bichel had played his part in restricting Glamorgan to 228-9 after homeskipper Steve James had won the toss.Glamorgan got off to a solid start but lost James to a run-out and MikePowell in the space of two overs to go from 94-1 to 95-3.Matthew Maynard posted a 49-ball half-century to help Glamorgan towards achallenging total but some of his colleagues didn’t have an answer toGraeme Hick who came on in the 42nd over and took 3-23 bowling seam-upoff three paces.Glamorgan must now win at least two of their three remaining fixturesagainst Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire to have anyhope of qualifying for the last eight.

A watershed victory in Indian cricket

There are victories, and there are notable triumphs

Partab Ramchand09-Mar-2002There are victories, and there are notable triumphs. These aregenerally in the nature of historic wins the first victory inTest cricket, the first victory over a particular country, thefirst rubber triumph, the first win overseas, and so on. But insuch a plethora of historic firsts, an event that took place onMarch 10 1971 is remembered even today by Indian cricket fanswith noticeable fondness. For old-timers, it serves as a tripdown memory lane, while for a later generation, it is a reminderof a great event.

Before the Indian team embarked on the Caribbean tour in February 1971, the two countries had played 23 Tests dating back to 1948. The record read – West Indies won 12, drawn 11. As if this was not bad enough from an Indian viewpoint, the startling fact was that not once in all those matches did India even take a first-innings lead!

Even as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was being swept back intopower with a huge majority, not all eyes were on events in NewDelhi. It was a watershed election in the history of the nation, but some 10,000 miles away, halfway around the globe, anotherwatershed event was taking place, one that held the interest ofnot just cricket followers in this country. India had won a Testagainst the West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port ofSpain. To some of today’s generation, not familiar with Indiancricket history, the reaction could well be, “So what is the bigdeal?” On the contrary, it was a triumph worth going gaga over,as I shall try and explain. Before the Indian team embarked on the Caribbean tour in February1971, the two countries had played 23 Tests dating back to 1948.The record read – West Indies won 12, drawn 11. As if this wasnot bad enough from an Indian viewpoint, the startling fact wasthat not once in all those matches did India even take a firstinnings lead! India had beaten England, Australia, Pakistan andNew Zealand, had scored rubber triumphs over three of thoseopponents, and had even registered three victories outside thesub-continent. But when it came to playing the West Indies, theIndians seemed to suffer some kind of mental block.Over the years, batsmen like Everton Weekes, Clyde Walcott, FrankWorrell, Rohan Kanhai, Gary Sobers, Basil Butcher and Clive Lloydhad annihilated the bowlers, while the Indian batsmen came up acropper while facing up to the fiery pace of Wesley Hall, RoyGilchrist and Charlie Griffith, and even the spin of AlfValentine, Lance Gibbs and Sobers. This then was the background to the tour. Even though the WestIndies were going through a rebuilding process following theretirement of some stalwarts, even though the Indian team had anew look about it, including a new captain in Ajit Wadekar, noone gave the Indians any chance of even stretching the WestIndies, who still had Sobers, Kanhai, Lloyd and Gibbs in theirranks. Winning the rubber was of course out of the question. And yet, in the first Test at Kingston, India not only took thefirst-innings lead but also forced the West Indies to follow on.Dilip Sardesai, with his now-legendary innings of 212, was verymuch the star. The shock had been registered, but the home teamput up a much better show in the second innings to save the matchcomfortably. Following the dramatic events, there wasconsiderable interest in the second Test.Could India pull off something similar again, or was the SabinaPark performance just a fluke? When the West Indies weredismissed for 214 on the opening day, it was obvious that thenew-look Indian side meant business. Sardesai again lead the wayagain with 112, and with useful contributions from Ashok Mankad(44), Eknath Solkar (55) and an exciting debutant in 21-year-oldSunil Gavaskar (65), India managed to take a lead of 138, despitethe gallant effort of Jack Noreiga’s nine for 95 in only hissecond Test. At the close of play on the third day, West Indieswere 150 for one, and the pattern of play seemed to be followingthat of the first Test. But there was a dramatic change in the script on the fourth day,Wednesday, March 10. The Indian bowling attack was not even atfull strength, with Erapalli Prasanna injured. But SrinivasVenkatraghavan rose to the occasion, bagging five wickets for 95runs. That wayward genius, Salim Durrani, chipped in with thewickets of Lloyd and Sobers in successive overs the latter fora duck. Ere long, West Indies were all out for 261, leaving Indiawith a modest victory target of 124.About the only interest inherent now was whether India wouldfinish it off on the fourth evening or whether the match would goto a fifth day. With Gavaskar (67 not out) leading the way, Indiawere home with a day to spare, the debutant completing amemorable debut by hitting the winning boundary. Fittinglyenough, it was the 25th Test between the two countries, and withthe remaining three Tests being drawn, the victory enabled Indiato win a rubber against the West Indies for the first time. Thewin at the Queen’s Park Oval was a definitive turning point inIndian cricket history, as future events proved.Little wonder, then, that the mention of March 10 1971 to anyold-timer will have his eyes sparkling with delight in a moment, and he will be “off” on that trip down memory lane again.

Tottenham transfer update on Romero

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly eyeing a transfer move for Cristian Romero in the summer window.

The Lowdown: Centre-half needed

Spurs conceded as many as 45 goals in the Premier League in the 2020/21 term, which is a rate of more than a goal a game and more than all four teams who secured Champions League football, so they could do with signing a shiny new centre-back for the new manager to build the team’s spine around.

Toby Alderweireld is also not getting any younger at 32 years of age, and so they should be looking to replace the Belgium international sooner rather than later and perhaps sign a long term partner and leader for Joe Rodon, who is impressing at Euro 2020.

The Latest: Spurs eye Romero

According to  L’Eco Di Bergamo (via Sport Witness), the North London club reportedly have their ‘eyes open’ with regards to potentially signing Romero.

The news outlet also mentions that Fabio Paratici bought him for Juventus, and so clearly rates him very highly.

The Verdict: Good option

Romero would certainly be a good option to bolster the squad for whoever the new manager may be – Serie A expert Conor Clancy explained this month how the defender is ‘phenomenal’ but ‘deceptively dirty’, praising his quality on the ball as well as off it.

At just 23 years of age, the Argentina international certainly has room to grow too, and could perhaps tone down that beastly side – he averaged 2.3 fouls per game in Serie A and picked up ten yellow cards this term – and become more streetwise with more experience.

Having already played at the highest level with Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League last season, and helping qualify for the elite European competition for the next campaign, he is a player who knows how to perform in big games.

Currently rated at £27m by Transfermarkt, signing Romero could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business by the Lilywhites – he scored three goals last season and more importantly was a colossus in front of his own goal, averaging 2.6 tackles and 4.3 interceptions per game.

A new look for Hampshire

It’s all change at Hampshire County Cricket Club with today’s unveiling of a re-branded identity and the announcement that the Club is now to be known as `Hampshire Cricket’.

Media Release11-Mar-2002It’s all change at Hampshire County Cricket Club with today’s unveiling of a re-branded identity and the announcement that the Club is now to be known as `Hampshire Cricket’.The move to re-brand Hampshire is in line with the company’s development strategy. This month, Hampshire makes history by becoming the first professional cricket club to convert to a plc via their parent company, Rose Bowl plc. A Public Offer opened on March 4th 2002 and the Club aims to raise a further £5 million to supplement the £18 million already spent on the 150-acre Rose Bowl site at West End, Southampton.Evolving from the traditional Rose and Crown icon and retaining the blue and yellow Club colours, the new logo reflects the exciting developments at the Club. The new brand has a fresh and contemporary style in order to reflect the dynamic values of the Club. The Hampshire Hawks logo has also been updated to integrate with the new Club brand and image.A new brand identity has been created for Rose Bowl plc based on the modern design of the new Pavilion’s highly unusual, canopied roof. This will act as the umbrella brand under which the individual Hampshire Cricket, Hampshire County Golf Club and Connor’s Health & Fitness brands will operate. All the new identities have been created by a London-based brand design consultancy, the-field, whose managing director, Simon Barbato, commented: "Rather than create a new identity for Hampshire at the risk of alienating a wide audience, we concentrated on gently evolving the badge whilst retaining the Club colours A visual communication strategy has also been created that reinforces the breadth of sporting, corporate and entertainment opportunities at the Rose Bowl through a wide array of media."The re-branding will encompass all consumer literature, corporate sales materials, stadium signage, stationery, identity guidelines and an interactive digital presentation to promote sponsorship and venue naming rights opportunities."The new brand identities and design strategy positions Hampshire as a contemporary and dynamic club in what is still a traditional market." said Samantha White, group commercial & marketing director, "We believe that this will enable Hampshire to attract younger spectators to cricket and build a broader sports entertainments brand as well as enabling Rose Bowl plc to present a professional and authoritative tone to the city."

Liverpool fans love Youri Tielemans update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to an update claiming the Reds are front-runners to sign Youri Tielemans.

It could be a relatively busy summer transfer window for Jurgen Klopp, as he looks to perfect his squad ahead of next season.

Liverpool have already brought in Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, but it is important that other new faces also arrive at Anfield in the next few months.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

One player who has been linked with the Reds is Tielemans, who was excellent for Leicester City last season, proving to be an influential figure in the middle of the park.

The Belgium international also famously scored a brilliant winning goal in the FA Cup final win over Chelsea, in what will go down in Foxes folklore.

Now, in a fresh update from Corriere dello Sport [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter], Liverpool allegedly lead the race to sign Tielemans this summer, with his future potentially lying away from Leicester.
