Wolves’ defeat to Manchester City was hardly a shock. Nuno Santo’s men haven’t been their normal selves this term while City have been ahead of the pack in the Premier League by quite some distance.

Though, if it wasn’t for defensive errors then they’d have stood a chance of nicking a point on Tuesday.

Ki-Jana Hoever was given a horrendous night by Raheem Sterling and was then caught out by Kyle Walker for the hosts’ second goal. Leander Dendoncker, meanwhile, scored an unfortunate own goal to open the proceedings.

However, the ever-reliable Jonny also had a night to forget at the Etihad. The Spaniard’s return to fitness last month was a welcome boost to Wolves’ chances but he has played just one set of 90 minutes since coming back.

Clearly, he is not up to full speed and that was all too evident when they travelled to Manchester. Dealing with Riyad Mahrez is difficult on an ordinary day but when you’re not quite up to fitness yet, it was always going to be difficult.

The Algerian spun a web down the channel for City, catching Jonny out with his run for the opening goal. It was lapse defending from the left wing back who was anonymous going forward and ineffective in defence.

He made just one tackle as Mahrez delivered a mighty ten crosses and three key passes. The dazzling winger was also successful with five dribbles; all from Jonny’s side of the pitch.

With that in mind, it was unsurprising that he was hooked after just 52 minutes on the clock. In that time, he made only eight passes of the football, the lowest tally of anyone to start the match.

Furthermore, he also managed just 14 touches of the ball. That happened to be a lower number than not only goalkeeper Rui Patricio but also substitute Fabio Silva.

This was an incredibly poor night for Jonny. That being said, it’s important not to count this as a proper litmus of his abilities. The 26-year-old has been an extremely capable performer since signing from Celta Vigo; Nuno now just needs to get him fully fit again.

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was Steve Bruce’s unsung hero in Sunday’s goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion, despite Arsenal loanee Joe Willock receiving lavish praise for his performance at The Hawthorns.

Shelvey anchored the Magpies’ engine room against their relegation-rivals as the two sides played out a drab affair, which extended the Toon’s sorry run of form to just two wins in their last 18 games across all competitions.

The result did neither side any real favours with Newcastle now just a point clear of the drop zone, albeit with a game in hand over 18th-placed Fulham while moving above Brighton and Hove Albion after the south coast side lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City on Saturday night.

Neither West Brom nor Newcastle could claim they deserved more than they took from the weekend’s result, in an encounter featuring some intent from both sides but little to no quality from either the hosts or visitors when it mattered.

The Baggies had arguably the better chances to snatch what would have been just the West Midlands outfit’s fourth win of the Premier League season, but could not make their pressure count with Mbaye Diagne only able to direct one of his four shots on target.

West Brom also delivered 36 crosses as a team as they were forced to play wide, but found their efforts thwarted by Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark in the Toon backline as they restricted Diagne to winning just five of his 15 aerial duels, per SofaScore.

Lascelles won two of his aerial contests while Clark won four, along with seven of nine ground challenges to hold Diagne to two from seven, for Sky Sports to name the centre-back duo as the stars of the visiting side.

Yet, for Chronicle Live, Willock was the Magpies’ Man of the Match having looked like the only Newcastle player capable of winning the game, and would have had it not been for Sam Johnstone denying the Arsenal loanee at his near post on the hour mark.

However, it was not Willock, Lascelles or Clark who was Bruce’s real hero but rather Shelvey, having provided a key defensive presence in the midfield battle. The former Liverpool and Swansea City star also kept Newcastle on the ball far better than United’s winter signing.

Shelvey recorded four successful tackles on Sunday, double the tally registered by Willock and from one fewer attempts, with the Gunners product dribbled past in five of his seven lunges for possession, per WhoScored.

Willock also offered half as many clearances as Shelvey (4) and made no interceptions, while the 29-year-old broke up West Brom’s play a game-high six times – three-times as often as any of his teammates, with Paul Dummett second with two.

Newcastle’s midfield play also flowed through Shelvey, with the £13m-rated beast taking 62 touches and completing 70% of his 44 attempted passes – only Clark (49) attempted a higher amount while Willock misplaced 48% of his 23 passes.

Despite being more defensive-minded in his approach, Shelvey additionally matched Willock for key passes with one goalscoring opportunity created each and shots taken (1).

Shelvey’s efforts even eclipsed the former England international’s average 1.4 successful tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per game in the Premier League this season by a considerable margin.

Bruce will have been delighted to see Shelvey thrive at such a level, given some of his performances in February were lazy and disinterested, while putting Willock in his shadow.

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Kevin Phillips, who made 513 career appearances, has been impressed with on-loan Wolves defender Dion Sanderson and wants to see him at Sunderland again next season.

Sanderson has impressed at the Stadium of Light this season making 22 appearances in all competitions and helping to shore up a previously leaky Sunderland defence.

Phillips believes if the 21-year old was to return next summer on loan or permanently, he would continue to improve as a player with the Black Cats.

The defender has started the club’s previous 12 league games, keeping seven clean sheets in the process, including two against promotion rivals Portsmouth and Ipswich Town.

Speaking on Sanderson’s form this season and why he would like to see him back on Wearside next season, Phillips told FFC exclusively:

“Yeah, he’s impressed me. I think over the last six weeks, he’s probably been one of the best defenders, alongside Luke O’Nien, they’ve formed a good partnership in the centre of that defence.

“He’s been very impressive and has looked assured and confident on the ball.

“I hope that he finishes the season strongly and helps them go up. I’d love to see him stay at the club next year because I think he’ll just continue to get better.”

Sanderson was, unfortunately, cup-tied for their Papa John’s Trophy final victory over Tranmere after playing in the same competition for Wolves’ U23s earlier this season, but returned against Accrington on Wednesday in a 2-0 win and yet another clean sheet.

O próprio Jean afirmou em entrevistas recentes que o tempo no futebol argentino foi fundamental para a sua carreira. Com o espírito argentino, o volante sabe como fazer a torcida corintiana não sentir falta de Bruno Henrique.

– Cada bola é a última do jogo e cada jogo é uma final. Minha principal característica é a marcação, não tem bola perdida. Sou um cara que luta o tempo inteiro – diz Jean.

Apesar da disposição dentro de campo, Jean é considerado uma pessoa tranquila fora das quatro linhas. Pelo Paraná, ele teve seu melhor momento no primeiro semestre deste ano, quando foi eleito o melhor volante do Campeonato Paranaense. Já o único problema foi no ano passado, quando foi afastado pelo técnico Fernando Diniz por conta dos carrinhos nos treinos.

Jean já passou por exames médicos e deve ser anunciado como o novo reforço do Corinthians nesta quinta-feira.

“Jean surgiu em 2014 e, desde então, chamou a atenção pela marcação, pelo vigor físico no meio de campo. Em um determinado momento da formação, ele atuou no futebol argentino, e ele tem uma marcação muito forte. Ele não perde viagem: se não rouba bola, ele faz a falta. Por conta disso, ele acaba levando muitos cartões amarelos. Esse é um ponto que ele tem evoluído, para levar menos cartões. É possível dizer que o ponto fraco dele é esse: levar muitos cartões. Nos passes, ele não é um primor, mas também tem evoluído nisso.

Fora de campo, ele é um cara tranquilo. Porém, no ano passado, ele teve um problema com o técnico Fernando Diniz. O treinador pedia para o Jean não dar carrinho nos treinos, mas não foi atendido. O jogador acabou ficando um tempo afastado, mas depois os dois falaram que já estava tudo resolvido.”
