Paul Merson has questioned why Unai Emery did not try and sign Fabian Delph during this transfer window.

What did he say?

Fabian Delph spent four successful years at Manchester City, but he failed to secure a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s side and, as such, he was moved on this summer during the transfer window. He ended up joining Everton in a deal which could be worth up to £10m.

Merson, however, believes that Arsenal should have made a move for the former Aston Villa man. He said on Sky Sports’ The Debate (via The Mirror):

“I look at him [Delph] and wonder why Arsenal didn’t sign him.

“He is better than the midfield three that played against Tottenham.

“He could have played at left back instead of Kolasinac on Sunday.

“I am a big fan of Delph. He can play in certain positions and is an excellent signing for Everton.”

“It feels like a loss” – that was the view of a Spurs fan after this weekend’s North London Derby in the video below…

Against the transfer policy

The 29-year-old has a wealth of experience he can call upon, having played Premier League football for a decade as well as earning 20 caps for England. Also, as Merson mentioned, he is versatile enough to fill in both in midfield and left-back, where he was often chosen for the Citizens.

However, his signing would clearly go against Emery’s transfer policy. If we look at the new arrivals at the Emirates Stadium this summer, they mostly have one thing in common: age. Of the group, only David Luiz is over 24, and he was signed on the final day when the Gunners were in need of a centre-back. There was clearly a strategy of bringing in young players and planning for the future, and the former Leeds man does not comply with that.

Delph is a good player, and will not doubt bring qualities to Everton that the Toffees need. But it would have been a mistake for Emery to make an exception and bring in a player that just doesn’t fit the club’s strategy.

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have criticised Davinson Sanchez for one particular moment during Colombia’s international clash with Brazil on Friday night.

The match was level at 2-2 in the second period when Sanchez decided to barge Neymar to the ground inside the penalty box with a heavy challenge.

The Spurs defender was not penalised for the charge, and the international friendly ultimately finished level at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Sanchez is not currently very popular with the Tottenham supporters following an erratic performance against Arsenal in the North London derby last weekend.

And a number of the English club’s fans have now taken to social media to criticise the former Ajax youngster for his heavy barge on the Paris Saint-Germain ace.

The 23-year-old did not concede a penalty, but many feel that he was extremely fortunate due to the clumsiness of the challenge.

وأفاد موقع “جول” العالمي، أن باريس سان جيرمان وضع جورجينو فينالدوم على قائمة اهتماماته الصيفية.

Napoli’s start to the season is likely to cause some worry for Liverpool and that is mainly due to the attacking prowess they have displayed so far.

Not only do Carlo Ancelotti’s side keep hold of the ball, with an average of 57% possession in Serie A, but they use it to great effect, allowing the likes of Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne to wreak havoc in and around the final third.

From their three Serie A games, that duo have a combined total of five goals and three assists, so it is some task to keep them quiet, and it is almost certain to be a big test of Joel Matip.

The Cameroon international has performed well this season, and his displays appear to have earned him a permanent place alongside Virgil van Dijk, which looked in doubt after Joe Gomez started the first Premier League game against Norwich.

Matip will likely start once again on Tuesday, although there could be a temptation for Jurgen Klopp to rest some players with Chelsea coming up, and with Napoli operating a 4-3-3 formation it is likely Mertens will choose the 28-year-old to exploit, rather than van Dijk.

Mertens has made a name for himself in recent years as a prolific goalscorer, but the fact he has been dispossessed, on average, less than once a match, could also create problems for Matip, whose average of 4.8 aerial duels won per game suggest he’s better suited to a contest in the air.

According to WhoScored, the centre-back has averaged four clearances per game in the Premier League. That shows he is improving, as he achieved 3.5 per league match last year, and that makes him better suited to teams like Napoli and high calibre opponents such as Mertens.

The Belgian fits the poacher mould. He doesn’t offer too much in terms of building attacks – he has averaged 21 passes per game in the league – but comes alive in the final third.

Mertens has the ability to finish difficult chances whilst 1.7 key passes per game displays his ability to create for his teammates, and Matip can’t afford him the time to pick out Insigne or Jose Callejon, as he is often accurate.

It won’t be plain sailing for the 32-year-old, either. In 26 starts last season Matip helped the Reds keep 12 clean sheets and he will look to hassle and harry Mertens at every opportunity, whether he is on the ball or before he gets a chance to receive a pass, as evidenced by his tackling and interception statistics.

Importantly, he uses his physical attributes to his advantage without penalising the opponent. He has only made, on average, 0.8 fouls per game, and such a record is invaluable against a team like Napoli, as players like Mertens and Fernando Llorente are capable of scoring from set-pieces, either directly or indirectly.

If Matip succeeds in keeping Mertens quiet it will go a long way in Liverpool keeping a clean sheet, and if they manage that they should be able to nick a win due to their attacking quality.

What a difference a win can make. Arsenal went into last night’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on the back of a winless three-game run. Going to one of the most raucous stadiums in Germany is never an easy experience for the opposition, and many would have expected a difficult match against last season’s semi-finalists.

In the end, though, there need not have been such concern, and the future once again looks brighter. The Gunners ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a clinical performance, with the goals coming from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Joe Willock and Bukaya Sako.

The display of the latter, in particular, was breathtaking, and he stood head and shoulders above his teammates on the night. Not only did he get himself on the scoresheet, but he also provided the assists for the other two strikes.

His showing cannot be reduced solely to his goal contribution, either. Saka was essential to everything positive Unai Emery’s side produced. He laid on five key passes, the most of anyone on the pitch, and completed three dribbles, which was more than any player present other than Joe Willock.

It was a powerful performance from an up and coming youngster, and he fully deserved the 9.4 WhoScored rating he was awarded. Such was his quality, only Ludogorets’ Claudiu Keseru and AS Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo were deemed to have done better during the competition’s first matchday.

The implications of his showing could be an awful lot bigger than just the result it contributed to.

On the left-wing, the Emirates outfit have appeared to struggle this campaign, especially after the exits of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi. So much so, striker Aubameyang has been asked to play out of position to fill in there on one occasion.

Saka, while just 18, could be the solution to Emery’s problem.

Here, he was dominant against a tricky opponent, and whilst it is important not to pile too much expectation on to the youngster, there is no reason why he can’t already begin to stake a claim for a regular first-team spot.

After all, Reiss Nelson, who is just one year older, started the first two matches of the season before dropping to the bench after failing to make his mark. If the former Hoffenheim loanee deserved the chance to prove his worth, then so does Arsenal’s latest prodigy.

ولكن هناك عائق واحد أمام تلك الصفقة، بحسب التقرير، وهو أن مستقبل روبرتسون متعلق بمستقبل كلوب في ليفربول وأفادت بأن إذا رحل الألماني سيكون رحيل الأسكتلندي ممكنًا في نهاية الموسم.

وكان روبرتسون قد أعلن من قبل أنه من محبي ليونيل ميسي، واعترف أنه يرغب في اللعب بجانبه لأنه حلم بالنسبة له إذا تحقق هذا الأمر.

الجدير بالذكر أن قيمة اللاعب في سوق الانتقالات تقدر بمبلغ 75 مليون يورو.

Sunday’s 2-0 defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium means the Red Devils haven’t won a single competitive game away from home since February. كشفت تقارير صحفية أنّ نادي ليفربول الإنجليزي، يرغب في ضم لاعب وسط جديد، خلال نافذة الانتقالات الصيفية القادمة ليخلف الهولندي جورجينيو فينالدو في “آنفيلد”.

سينتهي العقد الحالي للاعب الهولندي مع بطل الدوري الإنجليزي في صيف 2021، ويستطيع فينالدوم الدخول في مفاوضات مع أي نادِ.

وأوضحت الصحيفة أنّ بيرج، يريد مغادرة شيفيلد يونايتد في الصيف القادم، في ظل اقتراب فريقه من الهبوط إلى دوري الدرجة الأولى الإنجليزي (تشامبيون شيب).
