Leeds United saw Kemar Roofe depart for Anderlecht on Tuesday, with doubts still remaining over Kalvin Phillips’ long term future at Elland Road with his current contract due to run out in the summer of 2021 and no progress over a new one.

The Yorkshire outfit reportedly offered new deals to both Roofe and Phillips this summer, but one has gone and the other has been heavily linked with Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur while failing to commit to the club.

Reliable club insider and The Athletic journalist Phil Hay was asked by a fan in a Q&A (subscription needed) why the Whites have been unable to match the wage demands for Roofe and Phillips, and his answer was an interesting one.

He said: “It’s tough in the Championship. Both Phillips and Roofe would be looking for in excess of £20k a week. It’s not that they’re not worth it – Leeds just have to make judgement about what they can afford.”

Now there is no doubt that after the 2018/19 campaign that the duo were two of Leeds’ best and most important players, so it seems strange that they weren’t –and haven’t been – offered contracts they believe are acceptable.

Meanwhile, divisive goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is sitting on £35,000-a-week according to a separate Hay article on The Athletic, and he has left some of the Elland Road faithful unconvinced by him – including the in playoff disaster against Derby County.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon tweeted earlier in the summer that the Spaniard would be allowed to go with Sevilla one of the clubs reported to be sniffing around the former Real Madrid man, but instead he has remained at Elland Road and is the undisputed number one with manager Marcelo Bielsa praising him following the opening day win against Bristol City.

But given his wages and the fact that he is yet to convince some that he is a top-class stopper, you have to wonder if Leeds have made a mistake by not offloading his sizeable wages – saving some money that could have been put towards improved deals for Roofe and Phillips.

Yes, the former may be replaceable with links to Dwight Gayle and Eddie Nketiah potentially exciting, but he was still the Yorkshire outfit’s top marksman last term and will be a big miss.

It is perhaps a different story with Phillips though, who it would be really difficult to find a successor for given there aren’t a plethora of defensive midfielders – including ones who can fill in centre-back – available who can bring what he does for the Whites in that position.

He wins the ball back, as shown by the fact he averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per league appearance last season, according to WhoScored, before quickly recycling it to his teammates as shown by his average of 4.6 long balls.

While the 23-year-old looks set to stay beyond the deadline as things stand, his value may well decrease as his contract runs down even further and if the difference between keeping hold of him and losing him was Casilla and his wages, Leeds may have made a calamitous error.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Arsenal legend Martin Keown has delivered his verdict on the Gunners’ transfer business this summer.

After a disappointing end to the campaign last season, Arsenal’s work in the transfer market has certainly raised the sense of optimism surrounding the club.

He said: “The price Everton paid is staggering, but it’s good business from Arsenal. They needed to generate some cash, so they’ve got that money in to recoup and they spent money on deadline day defensively.

“Pepe is rapid and if you look at our two front players, they are as good as anything in the Premier League. Aubameyang is really quite a special player. He is the closest thing I’ve seen to Thierry Henry since he left and that’s high praise for him. But I’m still concerned about the midfield and the security they give the back-four. When Unai Emery’s side slipped to a humbling 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final, very few could have imagined the kind of turnaround in mood the Gunners would experience by the start of the new season. The north London club have addressed many of the key issues that plagued them during Emery’s first campaign in charge, and made a mockery of the reported £45m budget most thought they had.

Pepe’s pace and directness offers Arsenal the chance to play a tantalising front three involving the Ivorian, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Further back, Tierney and Luiz should help to solidify a defence that conceded 51 goals in the Premier League last season. So from the position they started in a couple of months ago, there is no doubting the Gunners have had a fine summer.

Following a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United in pre-season, there were some concerns from certain segments of the Leeds faithful over their defence after it was claimed Marcelo Bielsa was happy with what he had.

Pontus Jansson had departed for Brentford and Gaetano Berardi and Liam Cooper didn’t look particularly convincing as United tore through the Whites.

However, what they hadn’t seen yet, was what Ben White could do, as the Brighton loan man has added a sense of stability in the early weeks of the season.

Leeds have looked more assured, evidence of which is proving why some fans didn’t need to be as worried as they were.

On the chalkboard

One of the main reasons for Leeds’ solid defensive displays this term has been thanks to White.

He has been somewhat of a colossus among the back four and in the first couple of weeks of the new term, the youngster has won two tackles per match and also made 3.5 interceptions every outing on average.

But it’s important to note just how compact Leeds have been, something which has restricted their opposition to a lack of key passes, particularly inside their penalty area.

Bristol City serves as their worst match in terms of this number, being on the end of three key passes and an overall total of 11 inside their box.

However, there has been a stark improvement since.

Above are the number of final third passes made by each team during Leeds 1-1 draw with Forest.

In blue, per WhoScored, are the latter’s passes with Sabri Lamouchi’s men kicking towards the left. However, as can be seen, only two of their 90 passes which landed in the final third were actually in the penalty area, pieces of play provided by Joe Lolley and Alfred Semedo.

This second graphic comes against Wigan. This time, Leeds’ opposition are in red, kicking towards the right and again there is a lack of passes inside their penalty box. Only five of the Latics’ 117 final third balls were close to Kiko Casilla’s goal, but none of them serve as key passes according to WhoScored.

Against Brentford, Leeds were even better in this department.

The Bees’ final third passes are demonstrated in blue above, kicking to the left. They managed 165 inside the Whites’ half but remarkably only one of them fell in the area as Ollie Watkins finally found space in the 72nd minute.

These passages of play show how compact Leeds have been this term. They’ve kept two clean sheets and ultimately restricted their opposition to shots on goal, thus proving why initial concerns have been swatted away.

Lionel Messi is still very much waiting on his debut in the new 2019/20 La Liga season and if the recent reports are to be believed, he’ll have to wait a bit longer than expected. But, despite that not being the greatest of news for Barcelona, there’s still a silver lining in that story.

On the chalkboard

Of course, when Messi is injured, alarms are sure to be ringing in the Catalan capital. Barcelona depending on their little Argentine wizard is not really anything particularly new. The term “Messidependencia” is very much still a thing back in Spain and it basically supports the thesis that Barcelona are simply a far worse team without their talisman.

And when talking about someone of Messi’s pedigree and reputation, it’s difficult to see how any team wouldn’t miss such a huge influence on the pitch – this is, after all, a multi-time Ballon d’Or winner we’re talking about. But Barcelona of all teams should be well equipped for such emergencies and looking at their squad, they definitely are.

A necessary adaptation

There must be something in the air in Spain since both Real Madrid and Barcelona are suffering from the same injury woes. The Catalans have four players sidelined, three of whom are important players. Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele – who provided 29 La Liga goals last season – are also still unavailable and with Messi joining the fold, Barcelona might be forced to put some faith into their younger players and newcomers who are dying to get a piece of the action.

The tactical adjustment Ernesto Valverde will have to do is something the club as a whole have to bear in mind for the not so distant future, when the likes of Messi and Suarez won’t be around to help them out in sticky situations.

And without those key big guns on the pitch, the team will have to find their groove and utilise every single asset they can in order to pull through. Luckily for them, they have numerous players waiting in line such as Carles Perez and Ansu Fati from La Masia, both of whom were present in Barcelona’s impressive victory over Real Betis last weekend.

The injury to Messi just might force Valverde to experiment a bit and give a chance to some of the other players he still has available. Not only that but the big-money signings like Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong have been brought in for this very cause: strengthening the team and banking for the future.

This might be an alarming situation for Barcelona but they should still be more than capable of dealing with it properly. If anything, it just might force them to get that taste of how things might look like without Messi and force them to act as a team rather than a one-man army. In many ways, this just might be their blessing in disguise.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Craig Burley has admitted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be out of the Manchester United job after Christmas if results continue to take a downturn.

What did he say?

After an emphatic 4-0 win over rivals Chelsea in the opening Premier League game of the season, the Red Devils drew away to Wolves, before slipping to a shock defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Now, Burley has revealed that whilst Solskjaer will get some time due to his status as a club legend, he could see the Norwegian losing his job before the end of the year.

He said: “People are saying is there any leadership? I think all the way through Man United you could talk about that, not just on the pitch. So would it be an overreaction to say he will be gone by Christmas?

“I’m going to say it would be, only because, and they could have some bad results, but you know the ones upstairs that dither, that can’t make decisions, Ed Woodward and his cronies, you kind of feel they’ll sit on their hands for a while.

“So I think he’s got a bit of time, so I think that might be a bit of an overreaction unless they go like six straight defeats and it just caves in. I think he’ll survive maybe just until after Christmas.”

Trigger happy

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, United certainly haven’t been shy in pulling the trigger on sacking managers. The likes of David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all come and gone, and Solskjaer himself faces a difficult task in keeping his job.

The Norwegian’s electric start to life at Old Trafford was brought to a shuddering halt come the end of last season, and it appears the 4-0 win victory over Chelsea was a bit of a false dawn. Whilst Solskjaer has some goodwill with the United hierarchy for his record as a player, if he can’t preside over a turn in fortune sooner rather than later, he could well be gone even sooner than Burley suggests.

وأضاف: “التأهل يضعنا في طريق إلى أفضل مركز ممكن، حيث يتعين علينا الفوز فقط، ولا يمكننا التفكير في أي شيء آخر! كنا نأمل في نتيجة مختلفة، وقبل كل شيء مباراة مختلفة”.

وتابع جاسبريني: “كنا في الدقائق الأخيرة، كان علينا فقط الحفاظ على النتيجة، ومع ذلك فقد استقبلنا هدفًا بالقدم اليمنى لميندي، لذلك هذا غريب بعض الشيء، أمر مؤسف”.

وأكمل مدرب أتالانتا: “بالنظر إلى الطريقة التي سارت بها المباراة، فإن النتيجة 1-0 ليست بهذا السوء، لكننا نشعر بالأسف لأننا لم نُمنح الفرصة للعب”.

وأكد: “كانت ستكون مباراة مختلفة للغاية إذا لعبنا 11 ضد 11، يتحدث الناس عن المصابين، جيد، لكن لا يزال لديهم جودة هائلة في الفريق”.

وواصل: “أردت مباراة أكثر انفتاحًا، لقد بدأنا بشكل جيد ببعض الحركات الجيدة، وكان من المفترض أن تكون هناك روحًا مختلفة تمامًا في المباراة”.

وأردف جاسبريني: “لقد دافعنا جيدًا وكدنا أن نحسم المباراة بنتيجة 0-0 ، لكن من المؤكد أنها كانت ستكون أكثر إمتاعًا مع اللعب بالفريق كاملاً”.

واستطرد: “لقد مُنعت للتو لقولي شيئًا ما في الدوري الإيطالي، إذا قلت شيئًا الآن فإن الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم سيحظرني لمدة شهر، لكن هذا انتحار لكرة القدم، لا يمكن أن يكون لدينا حكام لم يلعبوا مباراة ولا يعرفون الفرق بين الاحتكاك والخطأ”.

وتابع جاسبريني انتقاداته: “إذا لم يتمكنوا من معرفة الفرق، فعليهم الذهاب للحصول على وظيفة مختلفة، بصراحة يجب عليهم جعل الأشخاص الذين لعبوا كرة القدم يحكمون بدلاً من ذلك”.

واسترسل: “الحكام لديهم أيضًا تقنية الفيديو الآن، ولديهم كل ما يحتاجون إليه للحكم، وحتى مع الإعادة فهم يخطئون”.

وعن سبب استبداله لجوسيب إيليشيتش مرتين خلال المباراة، أوضح: “كانت هناك أربع دقائق فقط متبقية، كنت أعتزم تعزيز الدفاع، لكن للأسف استقبلنا هدفًا بعد لحظات من التبديل”.

وعلّق جاسبريني على إصابة دوفان زاباتا: “لقد تحدثت إليه، يبدو أكثر من وخز حول عضلة الفخذ، كان يخشى إحداث المزيد من الضرر، إنه أمر مؤسف لأننا انتقلنا إلى وضع جيد للتعامل مع الموقف”.

وأتم: “انتظر طويلا لهذا الحدث وبعد ذلك يتم تدميره ربما نكون قد خسرنا على أي حال، أنا لا أشكو من النتيجة، لكن على الأقل كان بإمكاننا لعب لعبتنا، لكننا راضون، وسنذهب إلى مدريد لنلعب لعبتنا”.
