Harry Kane failed to score as Tottenham Hotspur opened their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, much to the chagrin of many fans.

The England captain started up front in the very first official Premier League game at the new stadium, but had to watch on as Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen scored the goals on a momentous evening for the club.

Roy Hodgson’s men were beaten 2-0 as Spurs regained the initiative in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

Kane, of course, scored in the final game at White Hart Lane as Manchester United were beaten 2-1, but he showed no signs of bitterness after his blank against the Eagles.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “What a feeling to play and win in our new home.”

And supporters are hopeful that he is merely saving his goals for next week when Spurs take on Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

It was another afternoon to forget for Patrick Bamford in a Leeds United shirt at the weekend.

The forward missed three superb chances against Birmingham City for the Whites who succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at St Andrew’s, a result which was compounded by Sheffield United’s impressive away victory at Preston North End.

Although it could be argued that he was incredibly unlucky not to score with his first attempt which hit the post, the other two misses were unacceptable for a forward who cost his side £7m last summer (via the Yorkshire Evening Post). With top-scorer Kemar Roofe returning during Saturday’s clash as a substitute, Bamford knows that he is on extremely thin ice in regards to keeping his place in the starting eleven yet it is important that Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t make any rash decisions regarding this situation.

In the absence of the former Oxford United ace, the 25-year-old has significantly contributed to the Whites’ promotion hopes, scoring in victories against Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Bolton Wanderers. Without his goals, Leeds may not still be in a position to usurp Chris Wilder’s Blades in the league standings and therefore the club’s supporters should not let Saturday’s poor performance cloud their judgement.

Indeed, starting Roofe over Bamford at Preston on Tuesday could prove to be a masterstroke by Bielsa yet when you consider the fact that the forward has only just come back from a serious knee injury, it would be a huge risk to take. With six games to play between now and the end of the season, Leeds cannot afford to lose 26-year-old as if they do, they may end up having to settle for the play-off positions in May.

Therefore, by sticking by Bamford, who is valued at £5.4 million (by Transfermarkt), for his side’s midweek clash against the Lilywhites, Bielsa will be providing the striker with one more opportunity to impress whilst also preserving the health of Roofe in the process.

وقال بيكيه الذي أجرى حوارًا مع صحيفة “lavanguardia” الإسبانية: “لم أتواصل كثيرًا مع ميسي عندما طلب الرحيل، لأنني في تلك الأيام رأيت أنّ قراره شخصي للغاية”.

وعن رسالته لـ ليو ميسي، خلال الأزمة: “أنا أتذكر ما قتله له حينها، ليو، إنه عام واحد فقط ثم يأتي إناس جُدد”.

وأضاف: “ميسي فكر ورأى بعد ذلك أنه يجب أنّ يرحل عن برشلونة، إذا كنت رئيسًا للنادي، كنت سأتصرف بشكل مُختلف تمامًا”.

يدرس الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز تغيير قواعد التسلل المطبقة في البطولة المحلية ضمن تقنية الـ VAR بعد الشكاوى الكثيرة التي خرجت خلال الفترة الماضية في العديد من المباريات الرسمية.

وكانت آخر الشكاوى في مباراة ليفربول وإيفرتون في الجولة الخامسة والتي أقيمت على ملعب “جوديسون بارك”، والتي شهدت إلغاء هدف الريدز القاتل الذي أحرزه قائده، جوردان هندرسون، في الثواني الأخيرة وتم إلغاؤه بسبب تسلل ممرر الكرة، ساديو ماني، ببضعة ملليمترات.

ويبحث رئيس لجنة الحكام في رابطة الدوري الإنجليزي، مايك رايلي، استخدام تجربة الدوري الهولندي في الفترة الماضية مع حالة التسلل حيث يستخدم خطوط بطول 10سم لاحتساب الحالات الصعبة، بحسب ما ذكرت صحيفة “ديلي ميل” البريطانية.

وتابعت الصحيفة الشهيرة أن تقنية الـ VAR في الدوري الإنجليزي تستخدم خطوط بطول 5سم، ويبقى القرار النهائي في يد حكم الساحة.

واقترح رايلي أن يتم استخدام تجربة الدوري الهولندي في إنجلترا قبل بداية الموسم، لكن تم إبلاغهم من الفيفا بأنهم لن يدعموا هذا النظام وهو ما أجبرهم على إلغاء الفكرة من قبل.

لكن الشكاوى الكثيرة في الفترة الماضية بعد بداية الموسم، جعلت رايلي يفكر في المزيد من الحلول من أجل تقليل الجدل حول حالات التسلل، لكن الفيفا يرى أن “التسلل يجب أن يحتسب تسلل مهما كان”.

It’s no secret that big changes are being lined up at Rangers this summer and although that could be unsettling for players, fans are excited at that prospect.

Steven Gerrard hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons in his first-in-charge of the Light Blues but only improvements can be made from him, so long as he gets sufficient backing over the summer. New faces will be largely beneficial to Gerrard and his team, with each capable of bringing new ideas and talents to the team.

Whilst securing second spot in the league, it’s about time Rangers went one step further and beat Celtic to the title for the first time since 2011.

The services of a talented defender will have to be acquired in order to fulfil that ambition and reigniting their interest in Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson wouldn’t be a bad idea at all. Simpson, (who is valued at £450k on Transfermarkt) was a player of interest – according to the Sunday Mail via the Scottish Sun back in August – to Rangers last summer but after a deal failed to materialise, the two went their separate ways.

For Jack Simpson, it’s been yet another season of false hope with only six appearances to his name.

As a highly-rated 22-year-old, it goes without saying that he needs more time on the pitch than that. Why not offer him the chance to do that at one of the biggest clubs in Europe?

Indeed, with Joe Worrall returning to Nottingham Forest and Gareth McAuley out of contract, the need for a new defender at Ibrox is obvious and that is a role Jack Simpson can fulfil. Yes, it’s an ambitious move but that’s the thinking required to get the club back on the up.

A big money move for Hearts star John Souttar has been touted but why waste the money? Gerrard needs short-term success if he’s going to wholly convince during his time in Glasgow and cannot afford not to win a trophy. Save the money, get a loan in and work on strengthening the attack.

West Brom’s game with Reading was far from a classic. However, in drawing 0-0 it was a result that was enough to seal both sides’ fate. For the Royals it was a point that ensured they’d be playing in the Championship against next season, and for the Baggies it meant they secured a play-off spot.

Naturally, the defenders will take the plaudits when both sides keep a clean sheet but from a West Brom point of view, this will come as a much-needed boost going into the remaining games.

Under James Shan, there have been some questionable defensive contributions, no less so than at Ashton Gate when the club found themselves 3-0 down in the first half against Bristol City.

But this was a much improved defensive display as West Brom secured their first shutout in six games.

One of the men to make a difference was captain for the day Kyle Bartley. The former Arsenal man was absolutely tremendous for Leeds in the Championship in 2016/17, but this term he hasn’t been able to replicate that.

His performances have largely been disappointing, and as such he’s taken a barrage of criticism from West Brom fans on social media.

However, against Reading, the club looked a lot better for Bartley starting and he was able to prove his doubters wrong with a busy and industrious display at left centre-back.

The 27-year-old was solid at the back and since Shan has moved to a three-man defence following that defeat against Bristol City, the defence and team as a whole have looked much better.

The 40-year-old made plenty of changes for the draw with Reading, and as a result they lacked their attacking potency which was in evidence against Preston.

But defensively there was a renewed purpose and Bartley has the new system to thank for his improved displays in the past two matches he’s played.

His passing accuracy was bettered only by Rekeem Harper in the West Brom side whilst the fact he won 100% of his aerial duels shows the force he can be when the ball isn’t on the ground, too.

Without Ahmed Hegazi, Albion have looked confused in defence but the performance of Bartley in particular on Monday will give their supporters extra confidence going into the play-offs.

For Shan, his most impressive feat yet is perhaps getting players like him in form.

وأكد فريد: “سعيد جدًا لأنني مهمًا للفريق الآن، من المهم أن تحصل على ثقة المدرب، والآن نحن قادمون في تسلسل رائع، لحسن الحظ، أنني لعبت هذه المباريات التي حققنا فيها الفوز”.

وعندما سُئل عن ماركوس راشفورد وحملته الخيرية، لمساعدة الأطفال الفقراء في بريطانيا، قال فريد: “نحن جميعًا فخورون بـ راشفورد، ما يفعله مهم جدًا بالنسبة للأطفال، آمل أن ينمو أكثر فأكثر كشخص ولاعب أيضًا، فهو لاعب لا غنى عنه”.

Among the many things that need fixing at Manchester United, their defence quite clearly needs a proper overhaul for them to compete with the best.

Indeed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side doesn’t boast the world-class defensive unit their elite rivals do and need to make signings to make themselves a fearsome unit again. Far, far from it.

So, the Red Devils are planning on reinforcing their defence, especially the right-back position which has been their Achilles heel all season. According to reports from French outlet L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), United are aiming to sign Thomas Meunier from Paris Saint-Germain. Great, right? Considering he spoke to Belgian outlet DH Sports back in 2017 of his love for the Manchester giants, describing himself as a ‘big fan’.

Well, while the Belgian proved to be an exciting wing-back in the French capital, his frail defensive nature doesn’t make him much of an upgrade over their current options.

Meunier’s a decent option going forward, but considering that United are planning to sign a right-winger (possibly (as per the Sun back last month) Jadon Sancho), his contribution isn’t absolutely necessary. Granted, the PSG ace will reportedly be available for a relatively cheap figure of close to €25 million (roughly £21.6m), something which has attracted the businessman Ed Woodward.

However, the Red Devils cannot be cheap in this regard. Meunier may well have scored or assisted 3 goals in Ligue 1, but his erratic defensive nature made Thomas Tuchel prefer the young Thilo Kehrer ahead of him. Indeed, he isn’t the most stable nor the strongest defender, often getting outwitted by wingers and causing trouble with his shakiness.

United need someone assertive like Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their starting right-back and not the unconvincing Meunier. Granted, he might be a big fan of the Red Devils, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cannot allow emotions to cloud his judgement in rebuilding United into an elite team once again.
