Fantasy Football Stars That Need To Be In Our Squad This Season

Today marks the return of the Premier League and most importantly for many of us the Fantasy Premier League!

Wannabe managers across the country will be hoping to top release their inner Pep Guardiola as they chose their 15 players for the season in an attempt to top their friend’s league.

Last season saw Mo Salah top the scoring ranks with an incredible 303 points, but at a cost of £13 million, is he worth all that money? Sacrifices would have to be made in order to get him in your starting eleven for sure.

So with the deadline just hours away, take a look at all the players you seriously need to consider in your team.

Some are obvious, but there are bargains to be had from the likes of Fulham and Wolves.

David de Gea (Manchester United, £6.0m)

He may be the most expensive goalkeeper in the game, but you can’t argue with his last year’s stats.

His 172 points last season got him into the top 20 highest-scoring players, an unbelievable achievement for a goalkeeper.

Andrew Robertson (Liverpool, £6.0m)

Soccer Football – Champions League Final – Real Madrid v Liverpool – NSC Olympic Stadium, Kiev, Ukraine – May 26, 2018 Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson in action with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric REUTERS/Hannah McKay

There were a lot of confused responses when Hull City’s Andrew Robertson was signed by Jurgen Klopp.

But last season the Scottish left-back emerged as Liverpool’s first choice, chipping in with assists, giving him huge scoring potential. Especially if his Liverpool team mates can start keeping clean sheets.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Arsenal, £7.0m)

The majority of Arsenal’s players took a FPL price loss last season, so Mkhitaryan’s £7m tag is almost too good to ignore.

If new boss Unai Emery can get his players off to a good start then the Armenian’s price will certainly rise.

Marko Arnautovic (West Ham United, £7.0m)

Arnie had a decent first season with the Hammers in a new role as the leading forward, mainly because of injury worries. But with new boss Manuel Pellegrini likely to play him up top too, he looks like a good bet at £7m.

Lukasz Fabianski (West Ham United, £4.5m)

The Polish goalkeeper was the third highest scoring keeper in the league last season, mainly because he had lots of scoring opportunities at relegated Swansea.

Now at West Ham, if the Hammers can gel as a team, he will have more opportunities to make saves but also keep clean sheets.

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City, £11.0m)

It’s an obvious one, but you really can’t look past Sergio Aguero for your main striker. Compared to Harry Kane and Mo Salah he is relatively cheap, and after a disappointing World Cup, he will be keen to right some wrongs.

Plus he’s already scored twice this season as he fired City to win the Community Shield.

Rui Patricio (Wolverhampton Wanderers, £4.5m)

Wolves/Portugal are exciting a lot of people ahead of the new season, after making a statement of intent with a number of marquee signings.

Portugal’s No.1 is one of those and at £4.5million, he’s definitely worth thinking about.

Bernardo Silva (Manchester City, £7.5m)

After last season’s success, it is no surprise to see another Man City player in our list.

He may not have started many games last season but after an impressive pre-season, we are expecting to see him on the Pep Guardiola’s team sheet this August.

Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City, £6.0m)

The king of social media Benjamin Mendy spent a lot of the season on the sidelines after suffering an cruciate ligament injury.

But it looks like the Frenchman will be Pep Guardiola’s first choice left back now that he has returned from injury.

James Maddison (Leicester City, £6.5m)

Maddison was regarded as one of the best Championship players over the last few seasons and will be making the step up this season with Leicester.

With Mahrez gone, Maddison is expected to be given the corner and free-kick duties.

Zakaria is the defensive midfielder West Ham have been craving

West Ham have arguably been one of the surprise packages in the transfer market this summer, having recruited seven quality players.

The Hammers were extremely poor last season and a squad overhaul was due this summer, it’s just fans didn’t actually think it would happen. So far, they have smashed their transfer record twice with the signings of young French defender Issa Diop and Brazilian winger Felipe Anderson, showing that even their owners David Sullivan and David Gold realised the needed for added quality.

Even being the second biggest spenders in the league, West Ham could still improve a couple of positions, starting by adding a defensive midfielder of Denis Zakaria’s quality.

The Swiss international plays his club football with Borussia Monchengladbach and with the Bundesliga outfit reportedly interested in West Ham’s Reece Oxford returning to Germany, a deal could be possible with the inclusion of these players.

West Ham would be much better off with Zakaria, as the defensive midfielder is already a top player at the age of 21, without the attitude problems Reece Oxford suffers from. He made 30 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, even managing 2 goals and 3 assists. That goal involvement proves that although he is defensive minded, Zakaria is more than capable at getting forward and helping out in attack as well.

He has great strength and retains possession well, he can spray the ball around and most of all, he would be an improvement on recently sold Cheikhou Kouyate at West Ham.

The Hammers are looking up rather than down for the first season in a while, something that could be interesting for Denis Zakaria to be involved with.

Under the management of Premier League winning Manuel Pellegrini, Zakaria among other players could enjoy a terrific season, helping West Ham improve on their 13th place from last season.

Arsenal have to weigh up a quick fire move for this out of contract midfielder

Arsenal have made a losing start to the Premier League season with consecutive defeats under new manager Unai Emery.

The Gunners, despite putting in a decent effort in the transfer market, still look to have the same old problems in their squad, especially defensively, and it could well be a long old season for the Londoners if things do not pick up soon.

However, an improved attacking performance at least against Chelsea this weekend gave some cause for optimism, and we at the Transfer Tavern think that Arsenal are only a few players off being much improved.

One position that obviously needs some experience adding to is in the middle of the park, and we think that recently released Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio would be a superb signing.

The Juventus stalwart has this week seen his contract cancelled by the Turin club, and at only 32, there is still plenty left in the tank should the Gunners fancy adding some quality and experience to their squad.

Marchisio has long been a regular for the Italian giants, and would bring an element of class, experience, and fight to an Arsenal midfield which has looked lightweight ever since the days of Vieira and Petit.

For a free transfer, Marchisio is arguably the best option available at the moment, and he would certainly offer Unai Emery something on either a short term or rolling contract type of deal.

Arsenal fans, what do you think? Would you take Marchisio? Let us know in the comments!

Newcastle United fans call for Shelvey and Ki partnership

Newcastle United did not have the most enjoyable summer transfer window as manager Rafael Benitez was left in the dark about funds.

The Spaniard was able to bring some new faces in, and one of them was Ki-Sung yueng from Swansea City.

The 24-year-old predominantly plays as a defensive midfielder but can also play more centrally.

Since moving to St James’ Park, Ki is yet to make an appearance for the club, but has been included on the bench in both Premier League matches.

Newcastle are yet to pick up a win having lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on the opening weekend and on Saturday they recorded a goalless draw with Cardiff City.

Despite the lack of goals, it was an eventful game as Isaac Hayden was sent off in the 66th minute and Kenedy missed a stoppage-time penalty just moments before the final whistle blew.

On Twitter, some Newcastle fans debated whether Benitez should give Ki a chance to link up with Shelvey, which would force Mohamed Diame out of the team.

Rangers set to finalise Joe Worrall deal before Old Firm derby

Rangers are set to secure a deal for Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall before the Old Firm derby this weekend, The Daily Mail reports.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard has hit the ground running in his managerial career with Rangers, standing unbeaten after the first few challenges of his tenure at Ibrox – but a considerably tougher test awaits this weekend in the Old Firm derby.

The Liverpool icon is set to lock horns with his former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers as Celtic go toe-to-toe with Rangers and Gerrard could hand a new defender a debut, as he is closing in on his 13th signing of the summer.

According to The Daily Mail, Joe Worrall is set to arrive from Nottingham Forest on loan before Friday’s transfer deadline and could, therefore, immediately slip straight into the first-team picture after Gerrard assured Forest boss Aitor Karanka the 21-year-old would have plenty of playing time.

What can he bring?

Despite his young age, Worrall has earned plenty of first-team experience in the Championship with Nottingham Forest, making over 50 league appearances, and is seeking a move after plummeting down the club’s pecking order following Karanka’s summer activity.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”285457″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Theatre Of Screams & The Serb As Good As Salah”]

The England U21 international has been eyed by Gerrard for a number of weeks and will provide some much-needed depth at the heart of the defence, a position that could be left exposed over the course of the season – especially if Rangers continue their charge in the Europa League.

Having captained the England U20 side that won the prestigious Toulon Tournament in 2017, Worrall’s leadership qualities at the back will be a fine asset to fight Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson for starting opportunities at the club.

Celtic fans love Mulumbu signing

Loads of Celtic fans have been giving their verdict on the capture of Youssouf Mulumbu, and they feel it could actually be a genius little signing.

Celtic fans were split when the Mulumbu news broke out of nowhere this week, and there are certainly two ways to look at the deal.

The Hoops need a commanding centre back, so the free signing of an ageing midfielder isn’t exactly going to fix the main issues.

However, fans are feeling pretty optimistic about the move now that the dust has settled, and it’s not hard to see why.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288164″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Get back to winning ways with our Premier League treble”]

Mulumbu played over 200 times for West Brom before making the move to Norwich and then Kilmarnock, where he dominated Celtic’s midfield last season.

He also spent five years with PSG early on his career, and his combination of footballing intelligence and tough tackling makes him a handy player to have in the squad.

It’s certainly not been a good transfer window for Celtic, but Brendan Rodgers may just have pulled a stroke of genius snapping up Mulumbu for free, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Sacking Pellegrini after four games would be ridiculous from West Ham United

West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini is not in imminent danger of getting sacked, according to The Mirror.

What’s the word?

A feeling of optimism surrounded the London Stadium when Manuel Pellegrini was appointed as the Hammers’ new manager at the end of last season.

The Chilean, who won the Premier League title while in charge of Manchester City, went straight to work by bringing in nine new signings.

However, the ambitiousness in the transfer window has not reflected onto the pitch as the club have lost all four of their top-flight matches so far.

The most recent loss came in the form of a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on home soil.

Despite the disastrous start to the season, The Mirror reports that owners David Gold and David Sullivan have no immediate plans to dismiss Pellegrini.

Is this the right call?

It is easy to make a knee-jerk reaction in this situation, but it would be too hasty from West Ham and co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan to sack Pellegrini after such a short time, and the duo owe it to the fans to give the 64-year-old more time.

The Chilean may be struggling right now but he is not exactly a novice when it comes to coaching in the Premier League.

He spent three years at Man City and guided the club to three trophy wins during that time.

Bringing in a lot of new signings means that they need a few games to gel as a team, so it is important that the Hammers give Pellegrini enough time to allow that.

In a few months, if things have not improved then the owners can reassess the situation.

Neves may not be a necessity but Liverpool should keep close eye on midfielder

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp should consider making a future move for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves.

What’s the word?

At first thought, it may seem strange for the Reds to target a midfielder given the amount of bodies they have already.

However, Klopp’s style of play means that there is a fluidity across the park, which can pave the way for a number of options.

Ruben Neves was one of the stars of Wolves’s Championship-winning season, and he would certainly be a good asset at Liverpool.

The midfielder was not lured away in the summer, but if he has an impressive Premier League campaign, then plenty of suitors are sure to come calling.

Why should Liverpool be interested?

At this stage, all the Merseyside outfit should be doing is keeping tabs on the 21-year-old.

The Portugal international, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, is versatile in that he can play centrally as well as deep in midfield.

Neves is gifted with technical ability and despite his young age, he possesses a confidence on the ball that is sure to impress Klopp.

Liverpool would appreciate the range of passing that the midfielder has, and he is also an asset in free-kick taking.

The only negative is that Neves may not be satisfied playing a bit-part role, and given the amount of talent that the Reds currently possess in midfield, he may have to bide his time.

Mesut Ozil’s lovely gesture melts the hearts of Arsenal fans

Arsenal star Mesut Ozil caused a lot of reaction on Twitter when he made a stunning gesture towards a young Arsenal fan in a wheelchair – posting a video of the moment he and the young boy met each other.

The young fan got to meet some of his Arsenal heroes after the Gunners’ 2-1 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday. The former German international bowed down to the boy, greeting him with a handshake, much to the delight and amusement of the youngster.

Ozil spent a few seconds talking the boy, with his family standing by and taking pictures. The gripping moment came when he clung onto Ozil’s hand with both of his; clearly a dream come true for him, after he watched his beloved Arsenal claim their third consecutive victory of the season.

Ozil got on the scoresheet for Arsenal on Saturday, scoring the club’s second goal of the afternoon after an Alexandre Lacazette shot was blocked and landed at the feet of the attacking midfielder, who calmly put the ball in the back of the Newcastle net.

Here are some of the Twitter reactions by Arsenal fans:

While West Ham United finally picked up their first points and win of the Premier League season with an impressive 3-1 victory against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, there may still be some doubts over their midfield issues.

Irons manager Manuel Pellegrini struggled to find the right formula in the opening weeks of the campaign with the likes of Declan Rice and Mark Noble failing to impress when they were on the pitch alongside regular Jack Wilshere, with Carlos Sanchez another that came under fire from his own fans on Twitter for his display in the 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.

It was Rice, Noble and Obiang that got the nod on Merseyside in the absence of the injured Wilshere, and while it resulted in a victory it remains to be seen whether it is the long-term answer for the east London outfit, or whether Pellegrini is content enough to not want to strengthen the area further during the January transfer window.

One person he should be targeting is a player he actually managed during his spell in charge of Manchester City – Fernando.

The 31-year-old midfielder is currently plying his trade for Galatasaray, and he produced a brilliant midfield performance in his side’s 3-0 Champions League win against Lokomotiv Moscow in Istanbul on Tuesday night.

As well as making three tackles, five interceptions and winning five aerial duels from a defensive point of view, as per WhoScored, he also showed that he can set his team on the attack too with two key passes and seven accurate long balls – something the likes of Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic could thrive on when they are countering.

Pellegrini knows the defensive stability that Fernando can bring to a team, and he should do everything to bring the Brazilian to the London Stadium in January.
