Yuzvendra Chahal is in line to play first-class cricket for Kent, after signing up for three matches in the ongoing County Championships “subject to regulatory approval”.Ignored by the national selectors in India for the ongoing Asia Cup and the upcoming ODI World Cup, at home over October and November, Chahal “will be available for selection in Kent’s remaining two home Championship matches against Nottinghamshire & Lancashire, as well as Kent’s away fixture against Somerset,” the club said in a statement.”This is an exciting challenge for me, playing in English county cricket, and one I’m very much looking forward to,” Chahal said in the statement.Kent are currently placed one off the bottom in the ten-team County Champions Division 1 table, and in danger of being relegated to Division 2 next season.”We’re delighted to have secured a spinner of Yuzvendra’s quality for the last three Championship matches of the season, with Matt Parkinson not available to us until next year, and Hami Qadri recently injured,” Kent’s director of cricket Paul Downton said. “He is really looking forward to playing in English conditions and will bring a significant amount of skill and international experience to our squad.”Kent had also availed of the services of fast bowler Arshdeep Singh earlier in the season. He played five matches in June-July, picking up 13 wickets in eight bowling innings. New Zealand’s Ben Lister is the other overseas player in the Kent roster at the moment.Chahal, who hasn’t always been a regular in first-class cricket, played two games in the last season of the Ranji Trophy for Haryana, his team in India’s domestic circuit, picking up three wickets at an average of 92.33. Overall, he has 87 wickets from 33 first-class matches, but is better known for his exploits in white-ball cricket, where he has 121 wickets from 72 ODIs at an average of 27.13 and 96 wickets from 80 T20Is with an economy rate of 8.19. He has never played Test cricket.

Sussex fight back after Gloucestershire boss first session

Matt Taylor five-for does early damage but Jack Carson, Sean Hunt seize momentum

Gloucestershire, looking for their first Championship victory of the season, did much of the hard work at the 1st Central County Ground, Hove, when they had Sussex rocking at 117 for 8. But then Jack Carson (56) and Sean Hunt, with a career best 22, added 71 for the ninth wicket in 21 overs, the best partnership of the innings.Sussex reached 202, with left-arm seamer Matt Taylor taking 5 for 24. Sussex maintained their momentum, dismissing both Gloucestershire’s openers in the first four overs, and at the close of the first day the home side were edging the match, with Gloucestershire 136 for 6.Sussex are also looking for an upbeat end to the season. Two weeks ago they nurtured far-fetched hopes of promotion after a dramatic victory over Leicestershire. But then they were docked 12 points because of their behaviour in that match, and that was followed by a rainy draw at Derby.Gloucestershire had comfortably the better of the first session after choosing to bowl under heavy clouds and on a green-tinged pitch. They took four Sussex wickets and should also have had Tom Haines caught in the slips when he had made just 22 of his 62 runs.Sussex, who welcomed back Haines and Carson – who were stood down for the last match – as well as Brad Currie, moved to 40 without loss. Then, as the clouds parted, the sun came out and batting suddenly began to look easier, they lost two wickets in three balls. Towards the end of his probing opening spell from the sea end, Taylor moved one away from Tom Clark, who edged low to first slip for 12. Then, two balls later, Tom Alsop edged a wide one from Taylor to the wicketkeeper.Next, Gloucestershire turned to their slow bowlers who found immediate encouragement. In just his second over, the slow left-armer Zafar Gohar made one bounce and turn and James Coles, on the back foot, edged to first slip to make it 64 for 3. It was 89 for 4 in the 22nd when Ali Orr, who had struck Zafar for six over backward square-leg in the course of an unconvincing 16, was bowled by the off-spinner Ollie Price as he played forward defensively.Gloucestershire were bossing the game at lunch, with Sussex 114 for 4 and they looked in total control after the break when they took four more wickets for three runs as Oli Carter, Fynn Hudson-Prentice (who made a duck on the day he was awarded his county cap) Haines and Henry Crocombe tumbled in three overs. But then Carson and Hunt turned the match. Carson was dropped on 12 with the score 139 for 8 but pulled Josh Shaw for four to raise the 150. The fifty partnership came in 56 minutes and then Carson on-drove the aggressive Zaman Akhter for another boundary to reach his own half-century, his third of the season. When Gloucestershire batted, Currie broke through in the third over as Ben Charlesworth was caught low down at first slip and then Chris Dent pulled Hunt to midwicket. James Bracey, caught at third slip off Currie, was third out at 42 and Sussex missed three more difficult chances (two from Ollie Price and one from Miles Hammond) before Hammond was well caught by Crocombe in Carson’s first over. Hunt then had Price caught at third slip for 27 and finally Graeme van Buuren pulled Haines to Carson at long leg.

“We’re going to have to look deep and have a bit of an analyse and learn; see what we’re doing and see what the best are doing,” NSW captain Moises Henriques said. “They’re the age-old cricket questions but unfortunately we’re just not doing it very well at the moment.”The result brought sweet relief for Victoria after they started the season with thumping defeats to Western Australia and Queensland. They were in some trouble at 131 for 6 in their second innings, but led by Peter Handscomb’s 90 they added 153 for the final four wickets to take complete control of the match.Tailender Fergus O’Neill was dangerous on his way to an unbeaten 70 as he combined in a 58-run final-wicket stand with Scott Boland.”[Handscomb] might have got a little clip from the coach after [how he was out in] the first innings,” Victoria captain Will Sutherland said. “The way he responded, they were incredibly valuable runs.”We knew it was going to be pretty much impossible for them to chase that total down thanks to him, which takes a big burden off the bowlers’ shoulders.”Victoria will be back in action next Saturday when they host Tasmania at the Junction Oval in Melbourne, while NSW face the ultimate test against reigning champions WA at the SCG.

New Zealand seek last semi-final berth; Sri Lanka's train heading towards the Champions Trophy

Even a win can’t assure New Zealand of a top-four ticket, with Pakistan having a game in hand; and rain could play a part in Bengaluru again

Madushka Balasuriya08-Nov-20234:17

Williamson: ‘We knew anybody can beat anybody and we’ve seen that’

Big picture: All to play forAnd so it comes down to this. After a month of non-stop cricket – 40 matches leading up to this one, to be precise – there’s a very good chance that it will be the weather in Bengaluru which might end up deciding which team takes up not just the last semi-final berth in this World Cup, but also the final Champions Trophy 2025 qualification spot. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let us first take a quick look back at how we got here.If you’re New Zealand, you could be forgiven for scratching your head a little at your present predicament. After four wins from your first four games, and then two scores of 383 and 401 in two of your next four, you surely ought to have nailed down that top-four spot, right? Well, not if that 383 came in an agonisingly close losing chase against Australia, and that 401 preceded some classic Pakistan shenanigans courtesy Fakhar Zaman, who wasn’t even in the starting XI at the beginning of this tournament. But New Zealand’s fate is largely in their own hands. A win against Sri Lanka, and they move to ten points to almost certainly lock that fourth semi-final slot. The only caveat – Pakistan will be playing two days later, knowing precisely what they need to do against England to trump New Zealand’s net run rate (NRR). Afghanistan too could get to ten points, but their NRR is so dire that it’s all but mathematically impossible to leapfrog the sides above them.3:07

SL assistant coach: ‘Captaincy must be a burden on Kusal Mendis’

As for Sri Lanka, an underwhelming tournament, scattered with only sporadic moments of triumph, reached a pointed nadir in their comprehensive defeat to Bangladesh on Monday – a fact conveniently sidelined by the furore surrounding Angelo Mathews’ mildly contentious, not-at-all-polarising dismissal.Related

The beautiful desperation of Kane Williamson

It's a four-way battle for the last two Champions Trophy spots

The margin of that loss, coupled with England’s win over Netherlands on Wednesday, also left them in ninth place* – below the cut-off point for qualification to the next Champions Trophy – with only NRR keeping them off the bottom. There are various scenarios at play but all four teams – Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Netherlands – could still finish level on four points, with run rate the decider.Which brings us to the rain, something that would be considerably more disastrous for New Zealand than their opponents because they need the full two points. Anything less than that and Pakistan, Afghanistan or both could surpass them in the race for the semi-finals.A washout may work in Sri Lanka’s favour but then they’d be waiting on at least two of Bangladesh, England and Netherlands to lose their final match of the World Cup.As for the actual head-to-head between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, it’s been all one-way traffic in recent times. Sri Lanka LLLWWIn the spotlight: Rachin Ravindra and Kusal MendisRachin Ravindra has 523 runs this World Cup. He hadn’t played a single game of ODI cricket when the year began but he is now the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Heading into the World Cup, all of Ravindra’s first eight ODI innings came at either No. 6 or 7. But from the moment he hit a hundred to kick things off last month, he earned himself a place in that New Zealand top order and has never looked back. Of batters to have played as many games as him in the World Cup, only Virat Kohl’s ludicrous average of 108.60 trumps Ravindra’s 74.71. And one last fact, his only ODI innings against Sri Lanka saw him score 49 from 52 balls, in what was his ODI debut.Of all the mid-tournament revelations in all the World Cups. In ordinary circumstances, having been pushed out of semi-final contention, this Sri Lanka side might have been looking forward to the creature comforts of home. Here, however, they still need a win, and more importantly inspiration. Enter Kusal Mendis, the man named captain two games into this tournament, two games in which he was a whirlwind of unadulterated intent. His seven innings prior to taking up the mantle had seen him rack up six scores of fifty or more, including a 77-ball 126 against Pakistan. Since then though his form has fallen of the proverbial cliff; he has averaged 15 at a strike rate of 68.18. Sri Lanka badly need Mendis to rediscover his mojo.Team news: Ferguson and Jamieson both to play? For New Zealand, Matt Henry has been ruled out of the World Cup. Now if only the rain will keep away.Stats and trivia: A one-sided contest Rachin Ravindra is currently tied with Sachin Tendulkar for most runs at a World Cup before turning 25. He can go free and clear of an all-time great tomorrow. Dilshan Madushanka is seven wickets away from becoming the all-time highest wicket-taker in a single edition of a World Cup. Sri Lanka have won just three of their last 20 ODIs against New Zealand; they’ve lost seven of their last eight, with one game abandoned. Two of the three games at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in this World Cup have seen the side batting first score above 350, with only England – against Sri Lanka – failing to do so.Quotes”We knew the talent was there, but to come out be one of the players of the tournament so far – not only with the bat, but he’s also making really valuable contributions with the ball. Yeah, very, very special player, and great that he’s on our side.”
