Man Utd could have their own Alexander-Arnold & he's a "major problem"

Life as a homegrown, academy talent is never straightforward, not least at a club like Manchester United, with those who rise up into the first team often met with lofty expectations and intense scrutiny.

Early goodwill shown toward a young prospect from supporters can often be replaced by negativity, with the modern game particularly obsessed with looking further afield for new talents, rather than promoting from within.

A current example could well be Kobbie Mainoo, with the 19-year-old having enjoyed a stunning 2023/24 campaign which resulted in a call-up to England’s Euro 2024 squad. Fast forward less than a year, however, and the injury-hit teenager has become something of a forgotten man, with talk having been rife in January regarding a swift departure.

Thankfully, there have reportedly been positive talks over a new contract for the midfield maestro, with it looking as if his long-term future is set to remain at Old Trafford.

Unlike Mainoo, however, not every member of Ruben Amorim’s squad will still be at the club next term, with the Red Devils and INEOS perhaps set to face their own Trent Alexander-Arnold scenario this summer.

Man Utd's notable homegrown exits

Perhaps the worst-kept secret in football in recent months had been Alexander-Arnold’s desire to depart for Real Madrid, with the 26-year-old’s future having been the centre of heated debate in Liverpool, amid his expiring contract.

As was widely reported on Tuesday, it looks as if that long-awaited switch is finally coming close to completion, with the Englishman – who had been a product of the club’s academy – set to end his Anfield affiliation in order to make the move to Spain this summer.

Those of a United persuasion will certainly remember losing one of their own to Madrid in the not-too-distant past, with Class of 92 star David Beckham departing on a £25m deal in 2003, following a dispute with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Subsequent years also saw Beckham followed out the door by former youth team colleagues, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt, with the pair joining Everton and Newcastle United, respectively, amid the search for increased game time.

As those cases epitomised, not every graduate can reach the status of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Gary Neville as a one-club man, with more recent times having also seen a raft of homegrown, academy sales at Old Trafford.

Indeed, just last summer, the new INEOS regime cashed in on Scott McTominay, with the midfielder joining Napoli on a £25m deal. Prior to that, Anthony Elanga had made the move to Nottingham Forest for £15m in 2023, while James Garner moved to Goodison for £9m in 2022.

Those deals, it must be said, appeared to be club-led amid the current PSR demands, with few having perhaps been as high profile as that of Alexander-Arnold’s impending switch – until now, that is.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Man Utd's own Alexander-Arnold situation

Much to the frustration of those on Merseyside, the playmaking full-back appears intent on severing ties with his boyhood club in search of a fresh adventure abroad, with the decision to depart on a free transfer set to be a particularly contentious one.

As far as United are concerned, the sale of Marcus Rashford this summer would prove far less controversial, considering his exile from Amorim’s ranks, although it would be a similar situation with regard to the end of his lengthy stay in Manchester.

The 27-year-old – who is currently on loan at Aston Villa – could be in line for a permanent switch to his temporary home, with the Midlands side holding a £40m option to buy at the end of the season.

Like Alexander-Arnold, however, Rashford appears to have his eyes set further afield, with reports rife in January that the forward was intent on sealing a dream move to Barcelona, having outlined his desire for a “new challenge” back in December.

There is then a very real prospect that the £300k-per-week United man could be lining up against his England colleague in LaLiga next term, should he get his wish, with reports this month again linking the Camp Nou giants with a summer swoop.

Again, unlike Alexander-Arnold, the manner and timing of Rashford’s exit would not be controversial, but like his compatriot, he has certainly been a major talking point at United in recent years.

Much like the debate over the Liverpool man’s future potentially being in midfield, rather than at right-back, there have long been question marks over Rashford’s role as a striker or a left-winger.

In any case, an exit has become almost inevitable in truth, not least since he was left out of the Manchester Derby back in December.

That appeared to be the latest sign of his woes, having also been punished by former boss Erik ten Hag last season, following a trip to Belfast ahead of the FA Cup clash with Newport County. As journalist Liam Canning put it, he had become a “major major problem”.

After the highs of scoring 30 goals in 2022/23, just 15 goals have followed in the last 18 months or so, with the decision to move him on to Villa Park marking the beginning of a sad end to his Red Devils association.

When a likely move does occur this summer, Rashford will be able to look back on five major trophies, and 138 goals for the club in all competitions. ‘Trent’, meanwhile, will have chalked up well over 80 assists and collected his own gamut of silverware.

For differing reasons, these two local heroes will be moving on this summer, with both players perhaps feeling a fresh start is needed. For both men, this is not the way most thought it would end.

As they say, ‘you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain’…

Moeen Ali recalled for Ashes after agreeing Test comeback

Veteran spinner answers England SOS to take on Australia after two years out

Matt Roller07-Jun-20231:38

Is Moeen Ali actually an upgrade on Jack Leach?

Moeen Ali has reversed his retirement from Test cricket and been added to England’s Ashes squad after answering an SOS call from the team’s management.Moeen confirmed to ESPNcricinfo on Monday night that he had been asked to consider a potential call-up following an injury to Jack Leach, who went for scans after England’s 10-wicket win over Ireland at Lord’s which revealed a lower-back stress fracture. He held discussions with Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Rob Key – England’s captain, coach and managing director respectively – and the ECB announced on Wednesday morning that Moeen has agreed to return to Test cricket. He has been added to England’s squad for the first two Ashes Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s.”We reached out to Mo early this week about returning to Test cricket,” Key said. “Having had a couple of days to reflect, Mo is excited to join the squad and play Test cricket again.”His vast experience, along with his all-round ability, will benefit our Ashes campaign. We wish Mo and the rest of the squad well for the Ashes campaign.”The other main contenders to fill the vacancy created by Leach’s injury were Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks – who both took Test five-wicket hauls in Pakistan in December – and Liam Dawson, who represented a like-for-like replacement as a left-arm spinner.Moeen has not played a first-class match in nearly two years•AFP/Getty Images

Moeen has not played a first-class match since his retirement from Test cricket, which he announced in September 2021 after England’s series against India. He told ESPNcricinfo at the time that he had struggled to “get in the zone” during that series, saying: “I just felt like I wasn’t in it.”He has won the T20 World Cup with England and two IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings since his retirement, and has represented various franchises around the world in between his international commitments. He has also returned to Warwickshire, his home county, and spent the last week captaining their Vitality Blast side. But since McCullum and Stokes took over a year ago, Moeen has become increasingly open to the idea of returning to Test cricket. He said last summer that he would “love” to play under the new regime: “They are both very aggressive and I think I would suit their cricket a bit more.”He gave serious consideration to a return for England’s December tour to Pakistan after discussions with McCullum, but eventually opted against due to the prospect of spending more time away from his family during a busy winter of white-ball cricket.Related

England’s squad will report to Birmingham on Tuesday and have three training days before the start of the series at Edgbaston on June 16. The venue is Moeen’s home ground, but he has not played a red-ball game there since the first Test of the 2019 Ashes, when he took 3 for 172 in the match and was then dropped.Moeen will likely bat at No. 8 if selected but is not a certain starter at this stage. Spinners often play a peripheral role at Edgbaston – only three wickets have fallen to spin in three County Championship games at the venue this season – and with Stokes’ fitness to bowl still unclear, England may be tempted to field an all-seam attack supplemented by Joe Root’s offbreaks. He has struggled against Australia in the past, with 20 wickets at an average of 64.65, though those figures include a gruelling 2017-18 tour in which England’s dearth of spin resources saw him play all five Tests despite ripping his spinning finger open on the seam of the ball early in the tour.

As well as Nunez: Liverpool must axe star who's cost over £30m in wages

While Trent Alexander-Arnold’s name is dominating the news at the moment, it’s important to remember that he’s not the only Liverpool player expected to leave this summer.

Though Arne Slot’s side are heading toward the Premier League title, there’s little question that the Reds need to make a series of changes to challenge across the biggest fronts in the years to come.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot

There aren’t many Redmen who need to leave this summer, but you’d have to say that Darwin Nunez is one of them.

Darwin Nunez has reached the end

When Nunez arrived at Liverpool in the balmy summer of 2022, anticipation was rife. Nearly three years on, there’s an overwhelming sense of resignation as Nunez reaches the end of his time at Anfield.

Premier League, Liverpool, Liverpool news, Liverpool latest news, Liverpool update, Liverpool team news, Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest, LFC news, LFC latest news, LFC update, LFC team news, Darwin Nunez, Jurgen Klopp, FSG, Anfield

Across 136 appearances, the 25-year-old has scored 40 goals and provided 24 assists, which isn’t a bad tally unto itself, but when considering £85m was forked out for Nunez’s signature, it makes for grim reading.

Moreover, he’s missed 53 big chances in the Premier League since his debut, a staggering number, made worse by the fact he’s only bagged 25 goals in the division, as per Sofascore.

Having come close to leaving for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League in January, the £140k-per-week striker’s day may be done sooner rather than later, especially with Liverpool getting ready to sign a new number nine.

Nunez’s day is done, sadly. However, he’s not the only member of Slot’s frontline who’s in the firing line this summer.

Slot must cash in on struggling Liverpool star

As Liverpool settle into the Slot era, it’s time for changes to be made. Federico Chiesa is the only player to be welcomed through Anfield’s gates so far, and he was a cut-price, low-risk addition at that.

Darwin Nunez warming up for Liverpool

Nunez has been reduced to a bit-part role this year and patently needs a change of scenery to scramble back into the limelight, but he’s not the only one toiling.

Indeed, Mohamed Salah can only carry so much, and Diogo Jota’s long-standing injury issues appear to have finally caught up with him, for he has endured a torrid run of form over the past several months.

Liverpool striker Diogo Jota

The Portugal international, 28, is typically an elite-standard marksman, breathtaking in the consistency of his finishing. But his skill has deserted him. In fact, Jota has gone 11 matches in all competitions without scoring a single goal.

Below, take a look at Liverpool’s highest earners in a table which excludes the ‘big three’ who are all out of contract this summer.

Nestled at the bottom, Jota and Nunez. The former has been a staple of Liverpool’s journey over the past several years, signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £45m in 2020, right after Premier League and Champions League titles had been conquered.

Earning £140k per week, Jota has actually raked in over £30m – and cost £75m in total – since joining Liverpool and while he’s deserved his pay packet, it’s not exactly small. If he can no longer produce the goods to his former level, it becomes unjustifiable.

Indeed, Sky Germany reported at the start of the month that Jota has been made expendable by FSG, joining Nunez on that list. BBC Sport analyst Raj Chohan has acknowledged Jota has a “deadly” strike, but that it has sadly abandoned him right now.

Liverpool's DarwinNunezand Diogo Jota look dejected after the match

Though it seems improbable that Liverpool will make sweeping changes across the frontline, selling Nunez and Jota would free up ample room for investment, perhaps freshening the ranks with two additions who could fire Slot’s project even further into the ascendancy.

Ceni valoriza espírito de luta do São Paulo em momentos cruciais dos mata-matas: 'Motivo de orgulho'

Sempre no limite.

Chris Woakes: 'If you could bottle that feeling forever, you would'

Allrounder feared his ship had sailed in Test cricket, now he looks locked in for the Ashes finale

Vithushan Ehantharajah11-Jul-2023It has been three years since Chris Woakes first took England over the line with the bat in a Test match. A score of 84 not out, the bulk of which came in a stand of 139 with Jos Buttler, helped chase down 277 in the fourth innings to win the first of a three-match series against Pakistan. It would be underselling the occasion to say last Sunday’s events at Headingley were a world away, as Woakes’ unbeaten 32 helped England to a target of 251 to keep the Ashes alive. The world itself was a very different place.Back in 2020, life had come to a sudden, jarring halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the threat of losses for English cricket in the region of £380 million, the ECB created bio-secure bubbles at Emirates Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl to honour their broadcast deals, subsequently limiting that figure to just over £100 million. All international and domestic fixtures in the 2020 summer were played behind closed doors, meaning the stands were empty for Woakes’ first bout of fourth-innings heroics. It felt like a microcosm of the Warwickshire allrounder’s career. As reliable a performer as he has been for England across all formats, he rarely gets the spotlight, particularly when operating in a team alongside Ben Stokes. In Leeds, however, with Stokes watching on from the home balcony having been dismissed for 13, Woakes produced a measured innings to seal victory by three wickets in the third Test against Australia, cheered on by a raucous packed house and a peak audience of 2.05 million on Sky Sports.”It literally doesn’t get any better than that, I don’t think,” Woakes said. “The feeling of that roar, the Western Terrace going mad.”Personally, in my biased opinion, it would have been better if I was doing it in front of the Hollies [at Edgbaston]. It’s pretty special. It’s pretty cool. Amazing feeling. I think you don’t hear the crowd as much out there as you do when you’re on the sides. But, it’s just special. If you could bottle that up forever and come back to it, you would.”Arriving at the crease with England’s chase on the rocks on 171 for six, Woakes initially played second fiddle to Harry Brook, who was eventually dismissed on 75. The 34-year-old then assumed the leading role with Mark Wood, as the pair finished the job with a stand of 24 from 14 balls, with Woakes striking Mitchell Starc through cover point for the winning boundary.Woakes claimed six key wickets in the course of a memorable allround performance•Getty Images

After England had closed the previous evening on 27 for 0 – needing another 224 for victory as the fourth day dawned – Woakes had figured any role he would play in the final act would be more akin to Jack Leach’s famous 1 not out inHeadingley’s 2019 Ashes Test, than the epic 135 not out at the other end that Stokes had scripted on that famous day. Given he played a more substantial part in proceedings, how did it feel to mimic the man himself?”I don’t know about that, I don’t know about that!” Woakes protested at the assertion his knock was akin to Stokes’ heroics. “I felt a tiny bit about how he felt at Headingley last time round.”But it’s just amazing to get over the line and beat (Australia). You are always coming into these days believing you’re going to get over the line, but they’re always going to be tight, aren’t they, regardless? You always feel like there’s going to be a twist. I felt like me and Brooky were cruising and he made an unbelievable knock to get 75 and play the way he did. But there was always a twist and I’m just delighted to get over the line.”Woakes’ first appearance in this series was also his first cap since March 2022, which he had also feared might be his last as England’s 1-0 loss away to the West Indies that followed a 4-0 Ashes defeat. Five wickets at 48.80 in the Caribbean after just six at 55.30 in Australia certainly felt like the end of the road. And though he is rated highly by Stokes who became Test captain at the start of the 2022 summer, a right knee injury which eventually required surgery that ruled him out of the entire home season looked to have set him exclusively on the white-ball path. But over the course of the winter, he would add a T20 World Cup winner’s medal to his 50-over one from 2019, along with nine more limited-overs caps in bilateral series. But his ambitions to play more Test cricket still burned bright.Related

Let's all bask in Mark Wood's climate of optimism

Old Trafford Test: can Australia fit in both Marsh and Green? What about Warner?

Switch Hit: Wood, Woakes, Woohoo!

Woakes duly ruled himself out for the IPL to tune up with Warwickshire in the County Championship, and looked to be in line for a recall against Ireland until the England management opted to blood Worcestershire’s Josh Tongue instead. He was fully fit for the first two Ashes Tests too, but he bided his time and made a profound impression in his first outing. Along with his runs were figures of three for 73 and three for 68 in the first and second innings respectively, and not a tailender among them, as he claimed the crucial wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (twice), Usman Khawaja and Alex Carey. While he always hoped he would add to his 45 caps coming into this summer, Woakes admitted to wondering if his time was up.”It’s quite emotional actually,” he said. “You sometimes think the ship has sailed, of course you do. Especially when the team is going so well last summer and I wasn’t involved, obviously I had injuries and stuff. You do wonder whether that ship has sailed. But I made a big decision at the start of summer not to go to India and, you know, it’s days like this make that sort of decision pay off, comfortably.”Given the balance Woakes gives the side, taking some of the bowling strain off Stokes who continues to manage a chronically injured left knee, while lengthening the batting, his place in the XI for the remainder of the series seems like a no-brainer. He proved his durability, too, with 35 overs in the match at a consistent pace, and stepped up when Ollie Robinson was unable to bowl in the second innings. The fourth Test begins on July 19 and will be Woakes’ first time back to Manchester since that 2020 performance. Though he is not looking too far ahead with regards to keeping his place, he expects England to arrive believing they can continue on what would be a remarkable comeback to win the Ashes. Especially with the pressure on Australia to not let things slip having come into the third Test 2-0 up.”It’s always been there, in that dressing-room the belief is we can win 3-2,” Woakes said.”You don’t want to look too far ahead, you have to play what’s in front of you, each ball, each day, each session, each Test match as it comes. I’d imagine when you’re so close to getting something, the harder it gets, and I’m sure the Aussies will be feeling that now. Once you get so close to something, it’s actually hard to get that over the line, isn’t it?”We’ve got turn up in Manchester and put in another performance. They’re a bloody good side, they’re an extremely good side. We’re going to have to be at our best to beat them again.”
