His value has soared by £58m: Arsenal hit the jackpot on "phenomenal" star

Whilst Arsenal are still yet to win a Premier League title under the guidance of Mikel Arteta, the Spaniard has done a phenomenal job in turning the club around and pointing them in the right direction.

When he took the reins back in December 2019, the Gunners were sat in 10th place, nowhere near the level of a side pushing for Champions League football on a consistent basis.

He wasn’t afraid to make brutal calls, setting standards to set the club up for success, even excluding fan-favourite Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the side due to his attitude issues.

Fast-forward to the present day, Arteta has built a phenomenal squad of players but is still lacking the depth in some areas to make the jump and become champions, with the recent injury issues highlighting the need for reinforcements.

However, nothing should take away the superb additions made up until this point, with the boss getting numerous decisions right in the transfer market.

Arteta’s best signings as Arsenal manager

Eyebrows were raised in the summer of 2023 when Arsenal completed a loan with an obligation to buy for goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford – especially considering the performances of Aaron Ramsdale the season prior.

The Englishman kept the second most clean sheets in 2022/23 but was immediately demoted to second choice as a result of Raya’s arrival – a decision that appears to be a masterstroke.

The Spaniard has been crucial to the club’s success this season, currently sitting third for the highest save percentage in the division – bailing the backline out on various occasions.

He’s not the only one to be worth every penny of his transfer fee, with midfielder Martin Odegaard cementing himself as one of the best in the division after his £30m move in 2021.

The former Real Madrid star has since registered 36 goals and 28 assists at the Emirates, creating countless opportunities in the final third for those featuring in front of him.

However, despite the form of the aforementioned duo, one other player has made huge strides in North London with his market value soaring as a result of his consistent displays.

The Arsenal player who’s value has increased by £55m

Back in the summer of 2019, Arsenal forked out £27m for the signature of French centre-back William Saliba, a player who would’ve been unknown to the vast majority of supporters.

It was a huge fee for just a 19-year-old with only 19 senior appearances, but it’s a move that has proved to be a masterstroke, with the defender becoming a crucial component of Arteta’s backline.

The fanbase would have to wait until the start of the 2022/23 season to see Saliba in action for the first team, but it’s safe to say he hasn’t looked back ever since – offering the defensive stability the side has lacked before his arrival.

He’s since gone on to feature over 100 times in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring seven times in the process, undoubtedly a threat at both ends, especially considering the club’s record from set pieces.

This season alone, he’s only missed two Premier League encounters due to suspension, often one of the first names on the teamsheet when fit and available.

Saliba, who’s been dubbed “phenomenal” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has produced some incredible defensive numbers this campaign, showcasing his importance to Arteta’s squad.

He’s completed 94% of the passes he’s attempted, winning 1.3 tackles per 90, along with 4.4 duels – making him the perfect ball-play defender with his attributes.

As a result of his consistent showings, Saliba has seen a huge jump in his market value, with CIES Football Observatory now valuing him at £85m, a jump of £58m on the fee forked out for his signature.

The supporters must remember the Frenchman is still only 23, having bags of time to improve further and aid their pursuit of ending their two-decade wait for a league triumph.

It’s no surprise to see such a jump in value given his performances in North London, with the club needing to use his move as an example of the success they can have in buying younger players and moulding them into a superstar to strengthen their title ambitions in the near future.

Rohit, Kohli and Suryakumar power India to the top of Group 2

India’s bowlers were also clinical in their defence of 180 against Netherlands

Karthik Krishnaswamy27-Oct-20221:12

Inside the Surya-Kohli bromance

Fifties of vastly different moods and tempos from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav laid the platform for India to brush Netherlands aside and move to the top of the Group 2 table with a healthy net-run-rate boost. Choosing to bat first on an SCG surface that was considerably slower than the one they played their tournament-opener on at the MCG, India put on a classic display of controlled dominance over Associate opposition, posting a par-ish total and defending it ruthlessly.Chasing 180, Netherlands were never in the game, and for a while seemed in danger of being bowled out for under 100. They avoided that fate, and the No. 11 Paul van Meekeren finished the innings with 4, 4, 4 off Arshdeep Singh to narrow their margin of defeat, but it was still a resounding 56 runs.India’s five specialist bowlers shared the wickets, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep, Axar Patel and R Ashwin picking up two apiece, and Mohammed Shami one.A costly non-review
The new ball swung, and occasionally stopped on the batter too. India scored just 11 runs in the first 2.4 overs of their innings, and van Meekeren picked up a well-earned early wicket too, having an lbw shout upheld after KL Rahul missed the flick off a late inswinger. Rahul didn’t review the decision, even though his opening partner Rohit seemed to suggest to him that the ball might have been swinging down the leg side; ball-tracking eventually proved Rohit correct.Three approaches, three fifties
Rohit struggled for fluency on this sluggish surface but he kept trying to hit boundaries. He survived a dropped chance – Tim Pringle putting down a sitter at mid-on when he was on 13 – and finished his innings with a control percentage of just under 59, but his preparedness to look ugly ensured he kept the scoreboard moving in the first 12 overs of India’s innings. He made 53 off 39 balls; during his time at the crease, the two batters at the other end – Rahul and Kohli – combined to score 28 off 31.Kohli finished with a control percentage of 75. During the first 21 balls of his innings, when Rohit was at the other end, Kohli’s control percentage was 81. Unlike Rohit, he didn’t take chances early on and chose to trust in his ability to score quickly once set. He did this, and found the boundary with increased frequency in the last five overs to score 30 off his last 14 balls, having scored 32 off 30 balls before that.Suryakumar Yadav brought up his fifty off the last ball of the innings•Getty Images

Suryakumar, meanwhile, did what only he and a few others in the world can do. He shuffled this way and that, brought his wrists into play to whip and slice the ball into gaps, and found the boundary five times in his first 12 balls at the crease. He hit seven fours and a flicked six off the last ball of the innings to finish unbeaten on 51 off 25 balls, a jaw-dropping effort on a sluggish pitch but one that you might take for granted given how often he does these things.Together, these three innings worked well for India to achieve what they set out to on the day. The chances Rohit took early on came off often enough for Kohli to begin conservatively, and Suryakumar’s blazing start allowed him to keep going in that vein until the last five overs.India’s total of 179 was their lowest in T20I innings where they have lost only two wickets or fewer, and Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik didn’t even come out to bat, but India probably only aimed for par on a sluggish pitch against Associate opposition. Kohli may probably have taken more risks early on against a stronger team.Max O’Dowd was bowled by Axar Patel•AFP

Bhuvneshwar sets the tone for dominant bowling display
‘Max O’Dowd or bust’ has been a fair description of the Netherlands batting at this World Cup so far, and the early overs stayed with that theme. O’Dowd found the boundary with a pair of pleasing square drives off Arshdeep in the second over, but either side of that Bhuvneshwar went 2-2-0-1, bowling with pinpoint accuracy and dismissing Vikramjit Singh, bowled swiping across the line. With the rest of the top order struggling, O’Dowd had to manufacture boundaries and was dismissed trying to do so, exposing all his stumps to Axar and missing a sweep. The Netherlands challenge fell away after that, as Axar and Ashwin throttled them through the middle overs, before the fast bowlers returned to clean up the lower order. Arshdeep, expensive early on, came back to take two wickets in two balls, a nasty bouncer followed by an inch-perfect yorker, and he was on a hat-trick when he began the final over. By the end of that over, though, his figures had taken a bruising, and van Meekeren had given Netherlands’ fans something to cheer about.

West Ham hold talks with "underrated" forward’s camp ahead of free transfer

West Ham United have held recent talks with an “underrated” forward’s camp as Graham Potter’s side ponder signing him on a free transfer this summer, but the Hammers face stiff competition for his services.

West Ham already making summer transfer plans

In the January window, West Ham backed Potter with the loan signing of Evan Ferguson from Brighton, who came in to bolster their striking options after both Michail Antonio and Niclas Füllkrug were diagnosed with long-term injuries.

Antonio’s horrific car crash means the Jamaica international is ruled out for the remainder of this Premier League campaign and beyond, while Fullkrug is expected to be out until around April with a hamstring injury (The Times).

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has played in a makeshift centre-forward role under both Potter and Julen Lopetegui this term, most recently in a 2-1 defeat away to Chelsea, but Ferguson’s arrival provides the east Londoners with a much-needed extra option up front.

The Republic of Ireland international could make his West Ham debut against Brentford on Saturday, but it is unclear whether he’ll start or come off the bench, as Potter could also seek to ease him in gently and start Bowen as a striker once again against Thomas Frank’s side.

It is worth pointing out that West Ham do not have an option to buy Ferguson at the end of his loan deal, meaning the club are making contingency plans for whether they cannot or do not strike a permanent move.

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has been linked with a summer move to West Ham this week, and Man United forward Rasmus Hojlund is also believed to be on Potter’s list of transfer targets as alternatives to Ferguson.

West Ham are also in pursuit of wide forwards, not to mention younger players with high potential who can bring the average age of their squad down.

West Ham hold talks with Antonio Cordero's camp ahead of free transfer

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Malaga winger Antonio Cordero is subject to real interest from West Ham.

The Spain Under-19 international is out of contract in July, meaning Potter and co are able to snap him up on a free deal. West Ham have apparently held talks with Cordero’s camp recently, but face a lot of competition from other interested sides, both abroad and in the Premier League.

Newcastle United are believed to be favourites for his signature right now, and the Magpies are convinced that they’ll end up winning the race for his signature, but there could still be time for West Ham to spoil the party.

The exciting 18-year-old boasts four goals and six assists from 25 appearances in all competitions so far this campaign, standing out as a shining light in an otherwise under-performing Malaga team, with scouts from elite clubs taking notice of his impressive performances.

TEAMtalk analyst and freelance scout Ben Mattinson has called Cordero an “underrated” attacker who’s comfortable playing on both wings, with the teenager also possessing a tendency to shoot at goal often.

Real Madrid now discussing 8-figure move to sign Everton star Moyes loves

European giants Real Madrid are now discussing a move to sign an Everton ace who David Moyes believes is a “top player,” according to a recent report.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees have all but mathematically secured their Premier League status for another season, as their point against Manchester United over the weekend means they are now 14 clear of the bottom three ahead of Wednesday’s action.

And as they look certain to be in the top flight once again next season, attention may soon start to turn towards the summer transfer window. Everton have a few players whose contracts are set to expire, and that could allow Moyes to bring in a few of his own targets.

One player Everton are interested in signing is Marseille’s Luis Henrique, who is a winger and could replace Jack Harrison if he returns to Leeds. However, the Toffees are not the only Premier League team interested, as Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are also keen on signing the 23-year-old.

Luis Henrique for Marseille.

But Henrique is not the only winger Moyes has his eyes on, as according to Give Me Sport, Everton are interested in signing Manor Solomon from Tottenham. Solomon is currently enjoying a successful loan spell with Leeds himself, but his future with Spurs looks to be over, as they are looking to sell the player for £10-15 million in the summer.

Real Madrid discussing move to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite

But while the Premier League side have their eyes on arrivals, they may also have to consider a big departure, as according to TEAMtalk, Real Madrid are weighing up a potential move for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, as they look to strengthen their defence.

The Spanish giants are currently in the middle of an injury crisis in defence, as Eder Militao has been ruled out until the summer. And with David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger also being out of contract in 2026, Florentino Perez is keen on signing a new centre-back, discussing a move for Branthwaite with other Real Madrid chiefs.

There has been no concrete approach to the player or Everton, but the Spanish giants are now holding legitimate internal discussions about making a move, with Carlo Ancelotti the man who gave the 22 year-old his debut.

For the Toffees, their stance hasn’t changed; Branthwaite, who is under contract until 2027, is valued at over £70 million, and they are not looking to sell him on the cheap. Moyes has only been back at Goodison Park for a few weeks, but he has already labelled Branthwaite as a “top player”.

“Jarrad has done really well. There are moments when he can do better; there are times he still plays like a young centre-back but has an awful lot going for him.

“With PSR [Profitability and Sustainability Rules], I don’t know all the stuff, but we still have some work to do in the summer. I was aware of it when I came in, but I’m hoping we’re beginning to stop thinking about that now.

“We’re beginning to think about moving forward, what we’re going to do. I think we’ve got a bill to pay, hopefully we pay that bill, then we’re in the clear. “So, Jarrad is a top player, and if people want to buy Jarrad, I’ve said many times – bring a big bag of money.”

SA20 announces prize money of over USD 4 million for inaugural season

“It is a further indication of SA20’s ambitions to positively impact South African cricket,” league commissioner Graeme Smith says

The inaugural season of South Africa’s SA20 league will carry a total prize purse of Rand 70 million (upwards of USD 4 million). That, as a CSA media statement said, is “the biggest prize pool in the history of South African franchise cricket”.Graeme Smith, the SA20 commissioner, said, “We have worked hard to offer a rewarding and unprecedented incentive in the first season of Betway SA20. This is a first for South African cricket, we have never had this type of competitive incentive in our domestic cricket and it is a further indication of SA20’s ambitions to positively impact South African cricket.”Related

The tournament will run from January 10 – with MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals facing off at Newlands in Cape Town in the first game – to February 11, when the final will be played at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. A total of 33 matches – two round-robin leagues, two semi-finals, and the final – will be played in just over a month across South Africa. The six teams in the fray are all owned by groups that own teams in the IPL: MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals share owners with Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals respectively, while the others are Johannesburg Super Kings (Chennai Super Kings), Pretoria Capitals (Delhi Capitals), Durban’s Super Giants (Lucknow Super Giants) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Sunrisers Hyderabad).Smith has in the past indicated that he hoped the SA20 would do for South African cricket what the IPL has done for Indian cricket in terms of unearthing a pool of players.”I think what we want to create in this league is that there’s so much talent – hope we can develop that talent to play under pressure on a global stage,” he had said at an event in Mumbai earlier this month. “I know I keep talking about the IPL but you look at the amount of strong cricketers that have come through in the IPL.”Looking at trying to find 15 players, hopefully there’s 25-35 players in the next couple of years at a level where it makes the selectors jobs very, very difficult. Andrea Berta tipped to sign £90k-per-week striker for Arsenal via connections

The Italian is apparently in very advanced talks to join Arteta’s side, according to some reports, with journalist Pete O’Rourke even telling Football Insider this week that his appointment is “all but done” despite Arsenal holding negotiations with Yossi Benayoun.

With Berta’s possible switch to the Gunners boardroom gaining more and more traction, transfer rumours are understandably going to follow, and many supporters will be eager to hear what the 53-year-old’s plans could be this summer if he is indeed hired.

Berta tipped to sign Matheus Cunha for Arsenal

The former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere has claimed that Wolves forward Matheus Cunha could be a very credible target for Berta given their Atletico ties.

The £90,000-per-week striker, dubbed “sensational” by Micah Richards, has been a star for Wolves this season, and he’s also got a very enticing £62.5 million release clause written into his new contract.

“Berta knows Cunha from their time at Atlético Madrid, and it could be a deal that goes through,” said Aliadiere. “He’s having a great season in a team that’s struggling to fight relegation. That shows you how good he is and how quickly he’s adapted to the Premier League. He could be a good signing too.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers' MatheusCunhareacts after the match

Aliadiere added that the pending appointment of Berta is a “very” exciting one.

“I think by the sound of it and what I was reading this morning, Andrea Berta seems to be the man in pole position at the moment. It seems like only small details remain, so it looks like he could be the new one.

“He has great experience and has been at Atlético Madrid for 12 years. If you look at the signings he has made and what the club has achieved, it is very exciting. Very, very exciting

‘If we look at the job Edu has done from when he came in and where Arsenal were, the signings he has made, I think he has done very well. You don’t work at Atletico alongside Diego Simeone if you’re not very good at your job, so I am very excited. But of course, we hope to sign some big players now.

“It is very exciting, and hopefully Berta’s good connections with the players he has signed in the past can help Arsenal. I think he would need to have a great relationship with Arteta.”
