Warner, Powell power Capitals convincingly past Sunrisers

Third defeat in a row for Sunrisers, who fall 21 short of target of 208

Alan Gardner05-May-20223:05

What has gone wrong for Sunrisers Hyderabad?

David Warner took centre stage in the clash between his current franchise and the one that unceremoniously dumped him last season, an unbeaten 92 from 58 setting up Delhi Capitals for a comfortable victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, and a much-needed two points in their quest to force a way into contention for the knockout stages.Warner batted through the innings to help guide Capitals to a score above 200, after Kane Williamson had won his ninth toss from ten and chosen to insert. The Australian opener, now fourth on this season’s run-scoring charts, found a vital ally in Rovman Powell as the fourth-wicket pair combined for an unbroken 122-run stand. Powell finished with three fours and six sixes in 67 from 35, with 70 runs cascading from the last five overs of the innings to put the chase beyond Sunrisers.Needing to score at more than ten an over, Sunrisers barely managed to go at a run a ball for the first half of their innings. A requirement of 145 from ten overs, with just seven wickets standing, was an equation beyond all but the most outrageous of hitting, and although Nicholas Pooran kept them clinging to the coattails of the asking rate with a crisp 62 off 34 – his first fifty of the season – Khaleel Ahmed picked up 3 for 30 as Capitals attack closed out a win that moved them above their opponents and into fifth on the table.Warner walks the talk
Before this game, Warner emphasised the importance of one of himself, fellow opener Prithvi Shaw, or No. 3 Mitchell Marsh “scoring an 80 or 90 or even a hundred if we can”. With Shaw absent through illness and Marsh falling cheaply – following Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s wicket maiden to start the Capitals innings – Warner took it upon himself to deliver the goods. His first ball was slapped through the covers, not all that far from going to hand, but thereafter this was a supremely judged innings. He jump-started the scoreboard during a rare outing for Umran Malik in the powerplay, helping himself to three boundaries during an over that cost 23.There were a number of crunching straight drives, leg-side swats for six off Malik and Kartik Tyagi, and a clean mow over long-on against Aiden Markram’s offbreaks. Most impressive of all was his split-second readjustment against Bhuvneshwar, having changed his stance in preparation to switch hit; the ball was full outside leg (to a left-hander) but Warner played it adeptly as a right-hander to glide four to third. That came off the first ball of the 19th over, and by the end of it he had moved to 92 from 58 – and in sight of a century against his former franchise. But there was no one in Delhi blue more pumped than Warner, standing at the non-striker’s end as Powell took over against Malik, who finished with 0 for 52. Powell explained Warner’s advice at the innings break: “At the start of the over, I asked him if he wanted a single, to try and get the hundred and he said: ‘Listen, that is not how the cricket play.’ I should try to smack it as hard as I can and as far as I can, and I did that.”Powell powers Capitals
A first IPL half-century from Powell set the seal on Capitals’ innings. There was no doubting his ability to “smack it” as hard and as far as he could, as he cleared the ropes six times on the way past 50 from 30 balls. The Jamaican has fulfilled a number of briefs in this Capitals side, appearing as high as No. 3 in the order, and as low as No. 8. But here he said he had asked Rishabh Pant for time to show what he could do at No. 5, and duly repaid the management with his highest score in nine innings.David Warner and Rovman Powell stitched an important partnership for the fourth wicket•BCCI

Powell took a little time to get settled, reaching 19 from 18 balls in the 16th over. He might have been out twice by that point, however: a top-edged swipe at Sean Abbott evaded the backtracking Tyagi at short fine leg, and Williamson then shelled a simple chance at mid-off, Malik the unlucky bowler.Making the most of his reprieves, Powell slaughtered the previously unhittable Bhuvneshwar – who had 1 for 4 from 15 balls to that point – over deep square leg, then launched back-to-back sixes off Abbott, one of them sailing 104 metres over cover. On 41, he probably should have been taken on the rope, when a smash down the ground seemed set to pick out Markram at long-on, only for the fielder to misjudge the catch and palm it over the rope. Two more blows for six brought him fifty and he finished the innings with 4-4-4 off Malik, including creaming a 157kph ball – the fastest of this year’s IPL – through the covers.Sunrisers stumble out the blocks
Williamson went into this match to the backdrop of murmurs about his strike rate – and they will only increase after another scratchy outing, which yielded 4 off 11 and a fiddled catch behind against Anrich Nortje in the fifth over. That left him with 199 runs from 10 innings this IPL, and a strike rate of 96.13: the lowest by any opener to have faced 200 balls in a season.Powell had described the pitch as “very good” at halfway, and the Brabourne had seen a higher score hunted down this season – Lucknow Super Giants reaching 211 with three balls to spare against Chennai Super Kings in game seven. But the early loss of Abhishek Sharma hurt Sunrisers’ chances of a fast start, and with Williamson taking seven balls to get off the mark, his team limped to 35 for 2 at the end of the powerplay (a total boosted by Rahul Tripathi slashing the fourth and fifth balls of the sixth over for four). After nine overs, Sunrisers were 48 for 3, needing to score at more than 14 runs an over; and the rate barely came down from that point, despite the best efforts of Pooran and, to a lesser extent, Markram, who showed what might have been possible with a better platform on which to build.

Nunez upgrade: Slot keen on Liverpool deal for "complete" £77m star in Jan

There’s a professionalism to Arne Slot’s Liverpool that creates composure and coolness no matter the situation. It’s a core element of the club’s success.

Liverpool have fallen behind on numerous occasions this season, but far more often than not, have overturned the deficit and strengthened their title-chasing claim.

As the fog hung above Anfield’s pitch, the Reds struggled to achieve focus in the first half, before Slot’s tweaks and half-time team talk triggered a stylish second-half performance.

Liverpool players celebrate

The frontline was firing, though not quite across all cylinders. Darwin Nunez continues to be an enigma, and it’s beginning to look like Slot is joining Jurgen Klopp in struggling to crack the nut.

Darwin Nunez's performance vs Leicester

The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle handed Nunez a 6/10 match rating for his labours, praising his ‘sufficient effort’ but noting that he didn’t influence all that much despite his huffing and puffing.

There just isn’t quite enough on show from this wonderful striker, this agonising and frustrating striker. We know you have it in you, Anfield seems to cry. We know that you have the tools to rival the finest marksmen across the continent.

But Slot’s patience is bound to be wearing thin, and without a dramatic upswing, the Dutch coach may urge FSG to peruse the market at the end of the season.

Darwin Nunez in action for Liverpool

It was Nunez who was caught offside when Cody Gakpo fired his second of the night home, prompting a VAR intervention. Too often has the Uruguay star been the weak link in Slot’s frontline, too often has he failed to harness and streamline his frenetic energy.

It’s a harsh thing to face, but Liverpool fans should acknowledge that Nunez is into his third campaign on Merseyside since signing in a deal rising to a club-record £85m.

He’s notched 37 goals from 119 matches in total, missing 50 big chances in the Premier League alone, as per Sofascore. How much longer can he toil up top before it is accepted that he will never be the free-scoring number nine that Liverpool need to ease Salah’s burden?

Liverpool need something new, something that can breathe fresh life into an attack blessed with an abundance of quality.

Liverpool eyeing new forward

As per Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, there is “a strong chance” that Randal Kolo Muani will move to the Premier League this winter, having been ostracised from Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain side.

Liverpool are among the contenders, with Plettenberg revealing that Liverpool have already gathered information on the striker’s situation, considering whether to make their move in January.

Arsenal, Manchester United and a host of overseas suitors are keen, and given that the France international joined PSG for a £77m fee, bagging him on loan could be a deal to trigger a new level of offensive fluency down Anfield Road.

What Randal Kolo Muani would bring to Liverpool

Described as “very complete” by Kylian Mbappe, Kolo Muani was one of the hottest commodities in Europe during his time with Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, but he’s fallen by the wayside with the imperious French champions, scoring only 11 goals from 54 appearances since the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Still, Kolo Muani’s a menace, and while he’s been shackled to a bit-part role this term, starting just two times in Ligue 1, there’s little question that he has the many properties to succeed in the Premier League.

Indeed: as per FBref, the 26-year-old ranks among the top 12% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 3% for successful take-ons and the top 14% for tackles per 90, showcasing his flair and completeness.

Curiously, FBref list Nunez as one of Kolo Muani’s most statistically comparable players, suggesting that Liverpool could integrate a player endowed with similar athletic qualities but hopefully a greater degree of finishing accuracy and composure.

A versatile forward, Kolo Muani would join a fluid Liverpool frontline that is interchangeable and electrifying through such dynamism, but his principal role can be found at number nine and this makes an interesting comment on Slot’s tactical plans.

Last season, Kolo Muani only scored nine goals and assisted six more across 40 fixtures, but he had entered a testing environment that didn’t recognise his qualities. Indeed, he racked up 40 goal contributions with Frankfurt during the 2022/23 campaign.

His clinical edge from seasons past does suggest that he might have the tools to take Nunez’s position. After all, he scored 15 goals during the 2022/23 Bundesliga season but only missed 14 big chances.

With Salah to his right and Gakpo and Luis Diaz jockeying for a place on the left, the electric Frenchman might just have the tools to craft a successful Premier League career, offering more with his movement and physicality than Nunez, who seems to drift through matches like a rogue piece of flotsam under Slot’s wing.

It’s something of a risk given that he’s flattered to deceive at PSG, but on a loan deal with the option for purchase, this could be an immense signing for Slot, who stands as good a chance of anyone in sparking the fire in such a forward’s belly.

Hardik's next goal after five IPL titles: 'To win the World Cup for India no matter what'

Titans captain says putting together a strong bowling unit made the difference for them in the tournament

Sidharth Monga30-May-20222:16

Hardik – ‘Have always enjoyed responsibility, it gets the best out of me’

Five IPL finals, five titles. One, now, as a captain in his first season with a team making its debut and representing his home state of Gujarat. Player-of-the-Match performance in that final, including the wickets of the big three of the opposition. Yet, Hardik Pandya’s bigger goal in life is to win a World Cup with India. Moments after he collected the winners’ trophy and finished his other obligations, Hardik was asked what his short-term and long-term goals were now that he had completed a successful comeback after injury troubles had taken away his bowling, and consequently his place in the Indian sides.”Absolutely to win the World Cup for India no matter what happens,” Hardik said. “I am going to give it everything I have. Always been that kind of guy, to put the team first. For me the goal will be simple: to make sure my team gets it the most.”Playing for India has always been kind of dream come true no matter how many games I have played. It has always been a pleasure for me to represent the country. The kind of love and support I have got, it is only from the Indian team point of view. Long term, short term, I want to win the World Cup no matter what happens.”Related

'The stuff dreams are made of'

'I wanted to show what I have worked hard for, and today was the day' – Hardik Pandya

Hardik has come close to winning a world title with India on three occasions, but all three ended in heartbreak. In 2016, his final over against Bangladesh carried India into the semi-final of the T20 World Cup but India lost to West Indies. In the Champions Trophy final against Pakistan next year, he displayed some of his hitting prowess in a scarcely believable innings, but it was too little and too late. In the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup, Hardik and Rishabh Pant carried out a mini rescue after three early wickets, but New Zealand eventually prevailed. In the IPL, though, Hardik has won every time he has got to the playoffs, four times with Mumbai Indians and now with Gujarat Titans. Asked if this was a little extra special, Hardik said yes, but only just.”Obviously, this will be a little special because I have won it as a captain,” he said. “The four that I have won before this are equally special too. Winning IPL is always special. I consider myself very lucky that I have played five finals and have lifted the trophy five times. Obviously this will leave a legacy because we are a new franchise, playing for the first time, and we are champions in the first season. But the four that I have won before this were equally special.”It will also come as personal vindication for him and coach Ashish Nehra, who invested more energy in putting together a strong bowling unit. They went into every match with six frontline options – if you count Hardik the bowler – and Rahul Tewatia as a seventh back-up bowler. Hardik said this was their philosophy from pretty early on.”Specifically, we both [Nehra and he] lean towards the bowlers,” Hardik said. “People say T20 is a batters’ game but I have always maintained that bowlers win you matches. Because if the batters don’t get a par score, if you have a gun bowling line-up, the bowlers can pull things back. We have always given ten runs fewer [than par]. Even when others have conceded 190, we have gone for ten fewer. Those ten runs win or lose you matches in the bigger picture.”For me and Ashu [Nehra], when we were starting, we wanted to create a strong and experienced bowling unit. So that even if there are times when batters don’t click, you can pull back with the bowling.”

Not just Dessers: Rangers star who’s in a "rut" is costing Clement his job

Glasgow Rangers will enter 2025 trailing their fiercest rivals by 14 points in the race for the Premiership title after a 2-2 draw against Motherwell.

Defeat to Celtic on Thursday surely should mark the last straw for Philippe Clement, but will the Ibrox board act and remove him from his position?

Only time will tell on that front, but his squad of players aren’t exactly performing to the ability required, that’s for sure.

Against the Steelmen, far too many anonymous shirts failed to contribute in what was a must-win match, most notably Cyriel Dessers.

Cyriel Dessers' dismal display vs Motherwell

Following the 2-1 loss to St Mirren on Boxing Day, Clement rotated some of his squad, which saw Dessers come into the starting XI in place of Hamza Igamane, much to the displeasure of the Ibrox faithful.

Unsurprisingly, the Nigerian striker lasted only 45 minutes as the Light Blues shipped two first half goals to head into the interval trailing 2-0.

Dessers managed to complete five passes while taking just 15 touches of the ball. The striker even found time to miss two big chances. He wasn’t exactly helped by Kieran Dowell, who was operating on the right flank, but it was a dismal showing by the 29-year-old.

Dessers even lost six of his seven duels contested along with losing the ball five times and this was clearly enough for Clement, who brought on Igamane for the second half.

It wasn’t just the centre-forward who let the manager down, as Jack Butland also delivered a shaky performance and he has looked far from his best at times this season.

Jack Butland is costing Clement dearly

Last season, Butland was in such good form that he was touted for an England recall after a few years away from the national side.

On the basis of his performances this season, he won’t be a name mentioned by Thomas Tuchel. That’s a certainty. Across 28 games in all competitions, Butland has kept 13 clean sheets, conceding 25 goals, but he has looked shaky in recent weeks.

Jack Butland

Against St Mirren on Boxing Day, Butland clattered into Greg Kiltie in his box and the home side duly scored the resulting penalty on their way to victory.

Butland was spared his blushes after punching the ball into his net against the Steelmen, as a foul against Tony Watt was spotted by VAR, but he struggled throughout.

Journalist Josh Bunting even criticised the goalkeeper, saying:

Mumbai Cricket Association proposes retainer contracts for senior men and women's teams

CIC comprising Paranjape, Kulkarni and Kambli to work out technicalities before start of 2022-23 season

Shashank Kishore and Afzal Jiwani02-Jul-2022

Mumbai made the Ranji Trophy final this season after six years•PTI

Domestic contracts, one of the first promises of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly upon taking over in November 2019, could soon become a reality for at least Mumbai’s cricketers.A proposal made by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Vijay Patil, in the wake of Mumbai’s excellent showing in the 2021-22 domestic season, has been approved, in principle, during the association’s apex council meeting earlier this week. This will have to be ratified at the AGM, likely to be held in August.”Mumbai has performed extremely well this year and there was always this question of providing security to our domestic players and making sure that we retain the talent pool which we have in Mumbai cricket,” Patil told ESPNcricinfo. “I think the gradation contracts will give us an opportunity to invest in our young talent. I am very happy that the apex council has unanimously approved this.”Retainers for senior men and women’s teams have been proposed, similar to BCCI’s gradation system for its national players. The number of contracts up for grabs is yet to be decided. However, it is likely that those who have a BCCI central contract could be excluded from the list, given the aim is to bring as many players under the umbrella as possible.Related

Amol Muzumdar: Mumbai's players 'have bought into the future'

Muzumdar excited by Mumbai's 'next generation' despite final loss

MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee, consisting of former players Jatin Paranjape, Nilesh Kulkarni, and Vinod Kambli, is likely to work out the technicalities. As such, the aim is to have contracts in place before the start of the 2022-23 season in September.”Once we have the ground rules laid out, we’ll be good to go,” Patil said. “I know that there will be issues and that will take some time. I think it is important that we roll it out and then it can be fine-tuned as we roll along.”Nothing is like a perfect system, but we’ve got to make a start. Once that start is made, I think everything else will fall into place. This is the association’s commitment to the players. Given the performance of our various squads across different age groups, everyone was of the same opinion that this needed to be done. I am happy that this proposal has been approved and I am looking forward to it.”Talks of player contracts have been gaining momentum ever since hundreds of domestic cricketers around the country were deprived of their earnings during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the BCCI truncating its domestic season. In fact, 2020-21 was the first time that the Ranji Trophy had to be shelved because of the pandemic situation in the country. The players have welcomed the news, even though there is a tinge of apprehension on how and when it would eventually come to fruition.Last September, the BCCI hiked the match fees for domestic cricketers, with the senior men earning between INR 40,000 and 60,000 per day while senior women taking home up to INR 20,000 per day. But the spin-off effect was hardly felt given the BCCI’s domestic season was curtailed in 2021-22.The Ranji Trophy, for example, was shrunk to just three league games followed by the knockouts. The players hope the board would revert to the original format, which would guarantee a team at least eight or nine group games. This would then help significantly increase earnings.INR 1 crore prize money for Ranji Trophy runners-up
Even as Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) announced an INR 2 crore reward in addition to the INR 2 crore allotted by the BCCI to first-time winners MP, the MCA has announced a prize money of INR 1 crore for the team that finished runners-up at the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy under Prithvi Shaw’s captaincy. The MCA has also matched the prize money announced by the BCCI for the age-group teams.Mumbai has had an excellent domestic season. The senior men’s side reached the Ranji final after six years, the Under-25s were crowned champions of the CK Nayudu Trophy, and the Under-19s finished runners-up in the Cooch Behar Trophy. The MCA also awarded retired umpires a one-time payment of INR 50,000, while also announcing a prize pot of INR 25 lakh for the ground staff for their work during the IPL, which was staged across three venues in the city.In May, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had announced a reward of INR 1.25 crores combined for the ground staff and curators of six venues – including two practice facilities – for IPL 2022.

Liverpool chasing £50m “warrior” who’d be Slot’s own Gakpo signing

Well, Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League has been slashed. It’s all doom and gloom (joking, it’s not). Arsenal might have won at home against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday but Liverpool remain four points clear and with a game in hand.

Arne Slot’s side have been brilliant this season and are favourites for the title, but it would be remiss to think that the Reds will storm away and out of sight before January’s done and dusted.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

It’s remarkable that Liverpool have even found themselves in such a promising position after Jurgen Klopp stepped down, with most assuming that Anfield would tussle for a place in the Champions League.

But Slot’s tactics and managerial expertise have propelled the Merseysiders into the ascendency across a range of fronts, and while Liverpool have only won three of their past seven top-flight fixtures, it’s anticipated the smoother sailing will return after a tough winter.

Liverpool have endured. They usually do. And anyway, the Redmen often dip into the January transfer window to make one or two well-placed improvements, and that might take place in the coming weeks.

Liverpool & the January transfer window

Liverpool and the January transfer window, a match made in heaven. Be it Virgil van Dijk or Takumi Minamino, FSG have always enjoyed making a wonderful winter signing to advance Liverpool’s cause.

Van Dijk is the gold standard and his £75m move from Southampton might even be the Premier League’s greatest January transfer, revolutionising Jurgen Klopp’s backline and leading Liverpool to glory.

Years before, let’s not forget, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge both joined from different outfits in January 2013, with Luis Suarez completing a £23m transfer from Ajax two years prior.

More recently, however, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo enjoyed mid-season switches to Merseyside, having now gone strength to strength under Slot’s wing, integral parts of the Anfield make-up.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo in action with Bayer Leverkusen'sJeremieFrimpongand Bayer Leverkusen's Exequiel Palacios

The Red Devils were left munching dirt clouds as Liverpool welcomed Gakpo to the fold, and now, FSG are looking to repeat the trick with one of the Premier League’s most underrated midfielders.

Liverpool eyeing Prem midfielder

As per Football Insider, scouts from Liverpool and Manchester United have been tracking Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes in recent months and could strike a deal this year.

Wolves are battling relegation but have improved under Vitor Pereira in recent weeks, and it would take a mammoth fee to convince the Old Gold to part with their engine this month.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes

However, a deal could certainly be struck this summer, with previous reports suggesting that the Anfielders would have to cough up something in the ballpark of £50m.

What Joao Gomes would bring to Liverpool

Gomes is a talented midfielder with an eye for a tackle. Wolves signed Flamengo’s prospect for £15m in January 2023, so he’s already accustomed to a winter rehousing.

71 appearances later, Gomes has scored five goals and assisted three more for his English employers, making good on talent scout Jacek Kulig’s praise that he is a “warrior” who “always gives 100% on the pitch.”

Gomes’ seasonal heatmap from the English top flight says it all: his boundless energy and enthusiasm across the different facets of the midfield game, completing 85% of his passes, 62% of his dribbles and averaging 5.1 ball recoveries per game.

He might be a dynamic and multi-faceted midfielder, but Gomes is a ball-winning monster at heart, ranking among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for tackles (4.05) per 90, as per FBref, emphasising that he would bring combative energy to Liverpool’s rich engine room.

17th-placed Wolves might be embroiled in a fight to stay in the Premier League but Gomes has been a machine in the middle, capable of playing deep and more advanced.

His energy and expertise as a “box-crasher,” as analyst Ben Mattinson has called him, could bear dividends for a Liverpool side that has enjoyed so much success with Ryan Gravenberch as the deep-lying playmaker.

Liverpool needs to get this one done, especially when considering the rich history in welcoming winter talent to the first team. Given that the aforementioned Gakpo had been on Man United’s radar, like Gomes, there’s an even more pressing reason to ensure that he’s added to the ranks.

Leaving PSV Eindhoven, Dutch sensation Gakpo was only 23 when he moved to Liverpool, the same age as Gomes is now.

Cody Gakpo celebrates for Liverpool

He’s been one of the key attacking pillars in Slot’s system this season, firing 12 goals and placing four assists across 30 appearances in all competitions.

The Netherlands international has been hailed as “Liverpool’s man for the big occasion” by reporter Beth Lindop, not blessed with the audacious prolificness of Mohamed Salah but indispensable as a title challenge is mounted.

How Liverpool would love to strike a blow in Man United hearts once again, strengthening their midfield ranks with a player who would be perfect for Ruben Amorim’s system.

The Old Trafford side have endured much market misery over the past decade but Liverpool’s talent radar is usually unerring, so it would be a travesty to lose this player to their rivals, who are desperately seeking a resurgence.

Whether Gomes is ready to make the jump is open to question, but based on the evidence from within tough conditions at Molineux, the Reds might just score a blinder by adding this one to the fold.
