Root: Nobody saying this is the end for Anderson and Broad

Joe Root has insisted that James Anderson and Stuart Broad can win back their places in England’s Test side after they were left out of the squad for the upcoming series against West Indies, as Anderson revealed he was “praying that this isn’t the end” of his international career.Anderson addressed his omission publicly for the first time on Wednesday, saying that he had experienced “shock and disappointment” and that “a five-minute phone call [with interim ECB managing director Andrew Strauss] doesn’t really clear much up”, after Broad had described feeling “confused and angry” in a newspaper column.Root stressed that while he saw the tour of the Caribbean as “an exciting challenge” and a “real opportunity” for the rest of England’s seamers – Chris Woakes and Mark Wood in particular – to lead the bowling attack, he hopes to see Anderson and Broad “very much in the mix” for selection at the start of the English summer.”The fact they’re not there means there are different roles others have to fill,” Root said. “They’ve taken the new ball for such a long time in English cricket, they’ve been leaders of the attack, had a lot of success and deserve a huge amount of respect for it. But this is an opportunity for other guys to step into that space and become leaders as well.”Over time, [Woakes] has not played a huge amount of cricket away from home in the recent past,” he added. “He’s constantly been our first-change bowler or second-change bowler, he’s not had the opportunity to bowl with the new ball away from home.”That change in role and mindset might have a massive difference. He’s someone that’s done it in the white-ball game and grown massively from it, and gained a huge amount of confidence and ability from stepping into that void, and there’s no reason why he can’t do it with the red ball in hand as well.”Other guys can step up as well. Mark Wood had a fantastic tour of Australia, he bowled with heart, great passion, speed, endurance, being able to do it for long periods of time. It’s a chance for him to grow and develop as a player as well. And really, I want those guys step into that void and enjoy that challenge, and enjoy becoming more senior within the group.”Joe Root insists the door is not closed for James Anderson [pictured] or Stuart Broad•AFP/Getty Images

While Root is not officially involved in selection meetings, he was consulted by the interim panel of Strauss, Paul Collingwood and James Taylor. He said that Anderson and Broad’s omission had been “a discussion point for a long period of time” but added that England have been “slightly too honest” regarding selection in the past and that he believes “certain things should stay in the room”.”I’ve spoken both to Stuart and Jimmy and they’re obviously disappointed, angry, and Stuart in particular has voiced that quite publicly,” Root said in a press conference the day before England’s departure to the Caribbean ahead of the first Test in Antigua on March 8. “You’d expect that. I’ve got a huge amount of respect for both of them. It’s been made very clear: no-one is saying this is the end for them. It would be great to see Stuart and Jimmy very much in the mix at the start of the summer as well.”At no stage has anyone said it’s the end for them. It would be great to see them starting the season and putting themselves in the mix for selection. You don’t want to look too far ahead. Ultimately, we’ve got to look after what’s right in front of us. And that’s this tour and making sure we get as much of that right as we possibly can.”If we’re in a position where they can come back into this team, then great, that’s only going to strengthen things. A lot can happen between now and then. But no-one’s been told that it’s the end of the road.”Related

Stuart Broad on being dropped by England: 'It has hit me pretty hard'

Speaking on his BBC podcast , Anderson confirmed his intention to play for Lancashire in the early round of the County Championship this season, insisting that he has “one more go at digging deep” and adding: “I still love playing the game.””There is likely to be a new director of cricket and a new head coach in the summer so I just hope that whatever decision is made, it’s talked about in the way that it should be,” Anderson said. “Another frustration for me over the last couple of weeks is a five-minute phone call doesn’t really clear much up for you.”I managed to get back to Burnley and spent the day playing golf and having a few drinks with my mates which I think just helps that bit. I’m praying that this isn’t the end, but if I never play for England again I know I’ve got amazing people around me to support me and that’s really important to me. I want to keep playing, I want to keep bowling and we’ll just see what happens in the future.”I’ve got to try and focus on stuff that I can control and that’s playing cricket and showing people what I can do with a ball in my hand. [There have] been quite a few texts between myself and Broady in particular, getting some initial frustration and anger out, but I think once that was gone, now it’s really trying to look to stuff that we can affect.”Anderson took eight wickets at 23.37 across his three Tests in England’s 4-0 defeat in Australia this winter, conceding just 1.79 runs per over but struggling for penetration. He insisted that he was happy with his performances on the tour, and highlighted his record since turning 35 in July 2017 – 160 wickets at 21.72 – as evidence that he is “not slowing down”.”It was obviously a difficult tour of Australia but I was happy with the way I bowled,” he said. “I thought I put in some decent performances out there. I had a few days off when I was home and then I was straight back trying to work in the gym at my fitness, trying to get my body back to where I want it to be and start bowling again, getting ready again for that West Indies tour. I felt in good shape and I still do.”I’ve just got to look to the summer and try and show people what I can do because I still feel like I’ve got the hunger and passion to play. I feel in great shape, I just want to keep bowling. When age is spoken about, actually, I’ve got better. Since I was 35, my record’s got even better. I know that I’m not slowing down, I’m not losing anything as people often say – ‘oh, he’s lost a yard of pace’ – but I don’t feel like I’m doing that.”

25 y/o Liverpool star spotted on crutches after Liverpool 2-0 Man City

An “outstanding” Liverpool player was “on crutches” after the victory over Manchester City on Sunday, according to reliable journalist Lewis Steele.

Liverpool secure priceless win over Man City

The Reds faced their most significant game of the season to date at Anfield, taking on a City side low on confidence, knowing that victory would take them 11 points clear of their rivals in the Premier League.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool side produced an emphatic performance against Pep Guardiola’s men, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. Had it not been for some glaring misses, the hosts could easily have thumped the reigning champions.

The Reds’ win means they are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, with supporters beginning to truly believe that a second title in the competition’s history could be on the cards.

Slot has plenty of injury problems to contend with at the moment, however, with the likes of Alisson, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota all missing for Sunday’s match. Now, a worrying fitness update has emerged regarding one key player.

Liverpool hero "on crutches" after Man City game

Taking to X after the City game, Steele shared brief and concerning footage of Liverpool defender Konate walking through the tunnel on crutches.

This will be a massive worry for Liverpool supporters, with Konate injured in the dying seconds of the Champions League win at home to Real Madrid last week. The Frenchman confirmed on social media on Friday that he would be out of the City clash, but the fact that he has now been seen on crutches suggests he could be set for a lengthy spell absent from the team.

Slot himself has said that Konate and Bradley will likely be missing for a “few weeks”, but whether that’s a couple or more like four or five remains to be seen.

Liverpool will be desperate to have him back as soon as possible, with Virgil van Dijk saying of him earlier this season: “He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion.

“He is learning, growing, getting better and looking after himself much better in order to be ready every three days as that’s what asked.”

On the plus side for Liverpool, Joe Gomez came in and did a superb job in the absence of Konate, winning 100% of his duels at Anfield, suggesting that he is going to be an able deputy in the coming weeks.

How many teams are participating? And what’s the format for the league phase?
A total of 38 teams will be participating this season, and they have been divided into nine groups: eight Elite and one Plate. While the Elite groups have four teams each, the Plate Group has six sides in it.A total of 57 matches will be played in the league phase, as each team plays three matches. While the Elite teams face all other sides in their group once, the Plate teams will play only against three sides in their group. That will be followed by the pre-quarter-final and the knockouts: the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final. That’s a total of 65 matches. What is the points structure?
The ranking order of the teams will be decided by points. Should teams be level on points, then the number of outright wins becomes the deciding factor. If it’s still not conclusive, the quotient rule comes into play. This will be determined by dividing the team’s batting average by their bowling average. How will the pre-quarter-final and quarter-finals play out?
Of the eight Elite-Group toppers, the seven with the best numbers qualify directly for the quarter-finals. For the final quarter-finalist, the Elite-group topper with the fewest points gets into a pre-quarter-final with the Plate-group topper. The pre-quarter-final will be played just after the league phase, and will end before the start of the IPL.Where will the Ranji matches be played?
The Elite matches will all be held across eight states, all neutral to the teams in action. Rajkot, Cuttack, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Thumba, Delhi, Rohtak, Gurugram, Sultanpur and Guwahati will be the cities where matches will be played. All the Plate matches will be conducted in Kolkata. The venue for the pre-quarter-final and the knockouts will be decided later. What happens if a player tests positive for Covid-19?
In case a player tests positive for Covid-19 or shows symptoms which prevents his participation in a match as per public health guidance norms, the match referee can allow his team to field a Covid-19 replacement after getting the necessary confirmations. However, the player coming in should only be a like-for-like replacement so as to prevent the side from getting any undue advantage.

The next Nuno: Wolves could appoint "outstanding" Graham Potter upgrade

Gary O’Neil looks set to remain in the Wolverhampton Wanderers hot seat for the time being, despite his side’s recent set of dreadful results in the Premier League.

The 44-year-old has been given the dreaded vote of confidence by the Molineux hierarchy, but no doubt a defeat this coming weekend to Ipswich Town would again ramp up speculation that the former AFC Bournemouth boss is soon to be a goner.

Emotions abruptly change in football after all, with a number of rumoured faces being linked to the Old Gold job post whilst O’Neil is yet to be axed.

Rumoured names to replace O'Neil

The name with the most weight behind it at this moment in time does seem to be Graham Potter, who is also being heavily linked with a move to West Ham United who have just beaten Wolves 2-1 funnily enough.

Talks had even allegedly taken place between the ex-Chelsea man and the relegation candidates, but nothing has obviously yet materialised with O’Neil still in the dug-out.

Graham Potter as Chelsea manager

Moreover, other left-field shouts have included Carlos Corberan and David Moyes when looking at the ongoing rumour mill, with Corberan a potentially controversial appointment, considering his current side West Bromwich Albion are fierce rivals with O’Neil’s men.

But, away from those named so far, there is another spectacular option reportedly available to the Premier League strugglers who could become the club’s next Nuno Espirito Santo if he is handed the reins shortly.

Wolves chasing the next Nuno

Wolves fans would love to have Santo back in an alternate reality, as the former Old Gold favourite has Nottingham Forest in an unbelievable fifth spot in the top-flight rankings currently.

Whilst he is obviously out of reach, Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho isn’t, who could love a return to English shores after once honing his craft as the ‘Special One’ in the Premier League before going on to succeed all across Europe.

Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

Reports from Turkey seem to suggest that Wolves have bid £5m to try and get Mourinho out of his current contract at the Super Lig giants, with the 61-year-old more than well-equipped to turn around the Old Gold’s stuttering fortunes.

Of course, Mourinho didn’t win that much-talked-about nickname by chance, with a stunning three Premier League titles collected whilst at Stamford Bridge, but it will be the defensive stability he could bring to proceedings at Molineux that will catch the eye more considering Wolves’ lowly predicament.

Looking at the table above, Mourinho – whilst at the helm of the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United alongside the Blues – had only seen his teams leak 305 goals from 365 Premier League games, helped of course by the fact he once had the likes of John Terry at his prime to call upon when at Chelsea.

But, he would be more likely to get a tune out of the downtrodden Wolves camp than Potter, who only has 41 top-flight victories next to his name from 141 career clashes, with just seven of those coming when in charge of the West London club.

The Portuguese icon is also unlikely to put up with any poor performances based on his past outbursts in the Premier League, with a number of Wolves underperformers perhaps raising their game if such an esteemed appointment was made.

As his compatriot Nuno – who Jamie Carragher dubbed “Jose Mourinho lite” in the past – has shown this season for Forest, a defence-first approach can work in guiding your team up the league, with his side conceding fewer goals than Manchester City at 18 from 15 games, whilst the Old Gold have shipped a disastrous 38.

The “outstanding” manager – as he was once labelled by Joe Cole – has only overseen 13 goals being leaked in league action back in Turkey, with this managerial coup having the potential to turn Wolves’ dire season around, away from simply sticking with what they have.

After notably securing promotion and qualifying for Europe during Nuno’s time at Molineux with a defensive-minded set-up – having been dubbed a “pragmatic coach” by Carragher – the appointment of another former Porto man in Mourinho could help to get this struggling side back to those previous heights.

Better than Corberan: Wolves can finally axe O'Neil by appointing "genius"

Wolverhampton Wanderers could soon be welcoming in a new boss if Gary O’Neil is sacked.

Alec Stewart calls on England selectors to keep faith as he defends county 'breeding ground'

Surrey director of cricket says gulf in standards is due to unavailability of international players

Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, insists that county cricket remains the primary “breeding ground” for England’s Test cricketers, but acknowledges that the gulf between the domestic and international game has widened in recent years, due in a large part to the reduced availability of the world’s best players. For that reason, Stewart – who confirmed he is not in the running to become the new managing director of the England men’s team – has warned the selectors not to over-react to the failings of the team in Australia and West Indies this winter, after they capped a run of eight Tests without victory with a humiliating ten-wicket loss in Grenada this week. Two of Surrey’s most prominent players were casualties of England’s 4-0 Ashes loss. Rory Burns, the club captain and England’s senior opener at the start of the winter, was omitted from the West Indies tour after making 77 runs at 12.83 in three Tests, including a first-ball duck from the opening delivery of the Ashes. And Ollie Pope, whose first-class average at the Kia Oval is currently a Bradman-esque 99.94, was relegated to 12th man duties in the Caribbean after a top score of 35 in six Ashes innings. At the age of 24, Pope’s struggles to convert his prolific county form into the England team is perhaps the most revealing evidence of the step-up in class that is now required to make the Test grade, and Stewart insisted that that need to learn on the job with England was all the more reason why it was incumbent on the selectors to keep the faith.”We’ve still got good players,” Stewart said at the Kia Oval, during Surrey’s pre-season media day. “Ollie Pope is a high-class player, but when they go up a level, it is a massive jump. The scrutiny you’re under now is even greater than it was, and that’s where you need selection to be strong. Because if you believe a player is good enough, then you need to give them a real good run.”Stewart himself is no stranger to the vagaries of England selection, having lived through the team’s struggles in the 1990s. But he believes that the heavy workloads faced by the game’s best players during his own playing days were a factor in keeping the standards constant across the first-class game.Related

“If you go back in time – and I’m not saying it was right – you used to finish your Test match and then play a county game the next day,” he said. “So the players coming through would be bowling at Graham Gooch and Mike Gatting, or they’d be facing high quality overseas bowlers.”In the 80s and 90s, there wasn’t franchise cricket around, there was no international cricket played outside of England in our summer. So you had all those great bowlers coming over to our breeding ground. Whereas now, the quality of the overseas-player availability has diminished and the best England Test players, because of the amount of Test cricket they play, are either playing [for England] or resting.”So you have to learn when you go up. You always have to improve and learn, but even more so now at the highest level, because of the hand the game has been dealt. And that’s globally, not just here.”The ECB is currently preparing to undertake a game-wide review, instigated by Andrew Strauss, the interim managing director, with the aim of redefining the game’s structure in time for the 2023 season. According to the Telegraph, proposals include a mooted 12-team Premier League, to replace the current 10-8 split across the first and second divisions, but Stewart believes that much of the criticism is the inevitable consequence of another high-profile Ashes loss.”How long has the County Championship been in place? 100 years or more?” Stewart said. “Whenever we’ve lost in Australia, which has been on numerous occasions for a long, long time, there’s always an inquest and we’re just seeing exactly the same thing, yet another inquest. When Australia lose here, they have an inquest about their Sheffield Shield.”County cricket is a breeding ground for Test cricket. Over the years it produces good players and it will continue to produce good players.””You’ve always got to earn the right to play,” he added. “But if you don’t feel a part of a set-up, you’re not going to play as a relaxed cricketer, as you would when you play for your county or your state side, because it is as much about the top two inches [the brain], as it is technically.””If you’ve been picked to be good enough for one game, then you’re good enough for a number of games, because if you’re not, then it’s not the lad’s fault. It’s the selectors’ fault.”
