Crystal Palace have a major adantage in the race to sign a new forward in January, it has emerged, as the Eagles look to bolster the ranks of Oliver Glasner after a wretched start to the Premier League season.

After winning six of the final seven Premier League games in the 2023/24 campaign, big things were expected of Oliver Glasner and Crystal Palace this season. However, their season is yet to really get up and running, with the Eagles having just a single win to their name (Against Tottenham) and currently sitting in the relegation zone, a point behind newly promoted Ipswich Town and safety.

A major part of their problem has been finding the back of the net; they have scored just eight times in 11 games despite the arrivals of big-money signing Eddie Nketiah and former Watford attacker Ismaila Sarr, neither of whom have got off the mark for their new club in the Premier League so far.

In fact, the only summer signing to find the back of the net in Crystal Palace colours so far this season is centre-back Trevoh Chalobah, and only three other players across the whole squad have registered a goal this season.

Henrique, who has 16 goals and assists combined this year, is thought to be keen to move to the Premier League, and Palace are one of three Premier League sides who “have had scouts at the recent Botafogo matches against Cuiaba-MT and Vasco da Gama”, where Henrique managed to get himself on the scoresheet.

With the Brazilian season coming to an end ahead of the January transfer window, a midseason move could be a strong possibility, though Botafogo are reportedly holding out for £25m to let their talented forward leave.

Nonetheless, Palace have a clear advantage in the race for his signature thanks to part-owner John Textor, who owns 46% of Crystal Palace but is the majority shareholder of the Brazilian side too, which could make negotiations relatively simple between the two sides.

A left-footed right-winger, Henrique could return balance to Glasner’s side and, though he may lack Olise’s elite end product, he could prove to be a shrewd piece of business as Palace look to avoid dropping back down to the Championship.

The raw Southampton number 33 would slot away the chance above against Ipswich Town in September with all the confidence in the world, coolly placing an effort past Arijanet Muric after Adam Lallana – who is another star who began his journey on the South Coast – found him with a killer pass.

Understandably, many suitors higher up in the top-flight standings are now reportedly having a look at the promising youngster, but Dibling could do far worse than just keeping his feet firmly planted on the ground, with a fellow homegrown sensation unfortunately never going on to live up to his insane hype when at the club.

Even hailed as “unbelievable” by then Southampton boss Claude Puel, with many expecting this to be the springboard for Sims to become the club’s next Walcott or Bale, sadly it never quite worked out.

However, for all of those who do go on to make the grade and play for the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid, there are others who see their careers fall by the wayside, which was the sad case with the 5 foot 9 winger.

Sims would only go on to make 27 appearances in the first team fold at Southampton, with Dibling bettering the ex-Saints man by actually scoring a goal, as Sims would never break his senior goalscoring duck after netting an impressive 14 goals for the B Team.

The now 27-year-old has since become a bit of a nomad after exiting the South Coast side, with Sims currently finding himself playing for National League outfit Yeovil Town.

Capped across many of the England youth teams like Dibling, Sims wouldn’t have envisaged his career playing out in the way it has after that sensational senior debut for the Saints.

But, whilst the academy graduate never lived up to the hype, it could all be different for Dibling in the here and now, with Southampton fans no doubt falling in love with their 18-year-old star even more if he can steer his side to safety over seeking out a transfer away.

Manchester City have, remarkably, lost four Premier League matches in succession and currently find themselves outside of the top four in fifth place.

The Citizens, who have also lost to Bournemouth, Brighton, and Tottenham, were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Anfield in Pep Guardiola’s first clash with Arne Slot.

Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah secured all three points for the league leaders in a game in which City simply struggled to compete at both ends of the pitch.

There were a number of poor performances from individuals within Guardiola’s starting XI, including summer recruit Ilkay Gundogan in the middle of the park.

The German midfielder returned to the club on a free transfer from Barcelona during the off-season but has, so far, failed to reach the same heights as he did in his first spell in Manchester.

Gundogan lined up alongside Bernardo Silva in midfield at Anfield and the former Borussia Dortmund maestro did not have an impact on the match in or out of possession.

The veteran came off the pitch in the 58th minute with just one duel won, out of two contested, and zero tackles, zero blocks, and one interception. This shows that he struggled to get near the Liverpool midfield to break up play and regain control for the Citizens.

He also failed to register any shots on goal and did not create a single chance for his team, from 45 touches, which illustrates his lack of impact in possession.

Gundogan is not the only Manchester City player who should be ruthlessly ditched from the starting XI by Guardiola, though, as Matheus Nunes should also be dropped.

The Portuguese star was selected to start on the left flank in the 4-2-3-1 set-up and was tasked with getting at Trent Alexander-Arnold on that side.

Unfortunately, however, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man failed to cause the England international any real problems throughout the match.

He only completed one of his three dribble attempts and lost a whopping 88% of his duels, whilst Trent made four tackles in total, and this shows that the forward was a liability from a physical perspective, as Liverpool players found it far too easy to get the better of him.

As you can see in the table above, Nunes did not create a single chance for his teammates and did not register any efforts on goal from the left wing, much like Gundogan in the middle of the park.

The two players, on the pitch to provide quality in possession, combined for zero shots and zero chances created in their time on the pitch at Anfield, which contributed to the team’s lack of penetration to create openings for Erling Haaland.

Therefore, Guardiola must ruthlessly ditch the two Man City duds ahead of the club’s clash with Nottingham Forest at The Etihad on Wednesday night.
