He’s like Vini Jr: Liverpool could sign "10/10" Salah replacement for £50m

Dissect Liverpool’s performance against Arsenal, and you’d find plenty to criticise. It was an imperfect display, one that Arne Slot will know could have yielded far more rotten fruits, had the Gunners capitalised on their early energy.

Mikel Arteta has built his side to elite status, but they looked depleted on Sunday afternoon and saw their influence pared down as the contest went on, something that Liverpool took advantage of in the closing stage.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Indeed, having initially restored parity in the first half through skipper Virgil van Dijk’s header, the Reds clawed back once again through Mohamed Salah’s tidy finish, capping off a delicious team move with less than ten minutes on the clock.

Mohamed Salah's influence for Arne Slot

We’re now two months away from January. It’ll be a new year, one rich with possibility but fraught with danger for Liverpool. Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Salah will all be free to chat with clubs overseas and make pre-contract agreements.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Once again, Salah proved to be the architect of Liverpool’s success, scoring at the Emirates Stadium to level the scores and stay four points above stuttering Arsenal, albeit ceding the Premier League’s top spot to Manchester City – who have dauntingly sauntered into pole position at the first quarter of the campaign.

That’s eight goals and seven assists across all competitions for the Egyptian king, who might be 32 now but is hardly detached from the supreme athletic prowess that complements his prolific shooting and improved playmaking.

To think that this man’s esteemed Anfield career could be reaching its conclusion is almost unthinkable, but the stark reality is that FSG have it all to do, with arguably the three most important Liverpool members leaving Slot’s project simultaneously. The setback could be significant.

Salah’s £350k-per-week contract towers above the rest of the squad’s earnings, and rightly so, his brilliance demanded a twist to the previously rigid structure. However, whether FSG will continue to cover such a financial cost remains to be seen.

If Liverpool are to lose their linchpin, sporting director Richard Hughes must surely replace Salah with a fitting successor, one whose potency and overall performance levels suggest that he could not just add to but enhance this wonderful breadth of offensive quality on Merseyside.

Luckily, pre-emptive moves are indeed being made.

Liverpool now eyeing Salah successor

According to a report from Sky Sport Germany last week, Liverpool are interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, who is valued at around €60m (£50m) by the sixth-place Bundesliga outfit.

Though Frankfurt have ruled out the Egyptian departure in January, Marmoush could be up for grabs next summer given that contact has already been made.

The 25-year-old would leap at the chance to move to the Premier League and play for Liverpool, no doubt enticed by the success of his country’s talisman.

Why Omar Marmoush could replace Salah

Let’s get one thing straight: Salah has entered the later stage of his career, and even if he pens an extension on Merseyside, it would be imprudent to neglect to search for an heir on the right flank.

Omar Marmoush

Hailed as a “10/10” talent by scout Jacek Kulig, Marmoush would be a fitting replacement, and not only because of the shared ancestry. The Frankfurt striker has gone from strength to strength in Germany over the past few years, now regarded as one of the Bundesliga’s finest and most fearsome forwards.

Harry Kane attracts attention from his homeland as he maintains eye-catching rates of scoring with Bayern Munich, but remarkably, the Liverpool transfer target is going punch for punch with the Three Lions captain in 2024/25, suggesting that he could step into his compatriot’s shoes and provide Liverpool with goals and assists aplenty.

It’s quite a thing, and with efforts in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal (the German version of the FA Cup) placed in the equation too, it can be seen that Marmoush has posted ten goals and seven assists across all competitions this season – even more goal contributions than Salah.

The talent’s creativity and ball-carrying quality suggest that he could perform as a sort of early iteration of Salah at Liverpool, ranking among the top 1% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 8% for shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Such skills have led FBref to present Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. as the Frankfurt star’s most similar player, a real testament to his fleet feet and direct style of play, almost unorthodox in his motions.

The Brazilian has been one of the finest players in the world across the past few years and is expected to finish second in the Ballon d’Or rankings, having risen to the status of Madrid’s star forward in a line carrying the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.

Vinicius Jr.’s sharp dribbling, flair and flamboyance have made him one of the most dangerous forwards of his generation, having scored 32 goals and supplied 18 assists since the start of last season.

He ranks among the top 1% of positional peers for progressive carries and successful take-ons, the top 8% for assists and the top 5% for shot-creating actions per 90 (FBref), with such metrics making it clear to see how the 24-year-old operates in a similar realm to that of Marmoush.

Liverpool know of the Los Blancos galactico’s star power only too well, but by signing their own version of the South American, Slot might just get his hands on the perfect Salah successor, one who could spearhead the new era.

Tottenham willing to make possible bid to sign new £12.5m Arsenal player

Tottenham are believed to be weighing up the idea of making an offer for a £12.5m player from Premier League rivals Arsenal, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Tottenham transfer news

Spurs continue to be linked with possible new signings to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad, with Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney emerging as a reported target. A January move for the 22-year-old has been mooted, with Newcastle United also thought to be showing an interest in him.

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap is also reportedly wanted by the north Londoners, who are even said to be in pole position to acquire his signature. The 21-year-old has impressed for the Tractor Boys this season, despite their struggles as a team, scoring five goals in eight Premier League starts.

Meanwhile, Real Valladolid winger Raul Moro has been mentioned as an option for Spurs, with the 21-year-old a bright young attacking talent, but Manchester City are providing competition, which always acts as a concern.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is another young player of whom big things are expected, and he is another rumoured target for Postecoglou’s men, having shone at Borussia Dortmund this season, netting three times in as many Champions League appearances.

Tottenham eyeing £12.5m Arsenal player

According to a report from Spain, Tottenham are among the clubs interested in signing Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein, in a move that would be controversial, given the rivalry between the two clubs. He is currently on loan at Real Valladolid, moving to Spain during the summer transfer window.

It is stated that Spurs have “entered the market” along with Chelsea in the battle to snap up the 22-year-old, and are willing to possibly make a bid, with the Gunners willing to sell if their asking price of between £12.5m and £16.6m is met.

Whether Arsenal would be willing to sell to Spurs remains to be seen, even if he is a player who they see no future for at the club, but he could be a shrewd addition if they do get their man.

The Gunners stopper is an influential figure at international level, already winning 34 caps for Estonia at the age of just 22, and he has even been praised by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez recently, who said of him: “He has a good build, a very good goalkeeper.”

Hein has started all 11 La Liga games for Valladolid this season, winning one Man of the Match award from WhoScored in the process, and he looks like a young goalkeeper with a lot of potential.

Granted, there is a reason why Arsenal don’t seem desperate to keep hold of him, but his performances this season have highlighted his ability and Spurs should always be looking to bring in exciting young talent.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 26, 2024

Guglielmo Vicario is clearly first-choice between the sticks for Postecoglou currently, but added competition for places can never be a bad thing, and Hein could be viewed as a long-term starter in north London, should he continue to improve in the manner that he is.

Avesh and Axar set the stage for Capitals before Iyer and Ashwin ace tricky chase

Mumbai Indians bowlers drag the game to the last over with regular strikes before going down

Shreyas Iyer showed off his T20 smarts as he helped Capitals pull off a tricky chase with a measured innings•BCCI

Mumbai Indians threatened to defend 129 on a sluggish Sharjah track, but Shreyas Iyer dented their playoff chances and strengthened Delhi Capitals’ own chances of a top-two finish with a smart innings in the company of R Ashwin. Iyer absorbed the pressure created by the fall of three wickets within the first five overs of the chase and ushered Capitals home with five balls to spare.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

Despite the defeat on Saturday, Mumbai could still sneak into the final four, but in addition to needing to win their remaining two games against Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, they must also rely on favours from other sides. It was Capitals’ depleted attack that set up the victory. While Avesh Khan and Anrich Nortje defied the slowness of the pitch with a hair-raising display of pace and guile, left-arm fingerspinner Axar Patel thrived with his more subtle variations. Not a favourable match-up? No problem for Axar
The Capitals left out offspin-bowling allrounder Lalit Yadav to welcome back Prithvi Shaw, which meant they had only five bowling options at their disposal. It proved enough, with the seamers dovetailing beautifully with Axar.It was Avesh who produced the first breakthrough when Rohit Sharma – believe it or not – miscued a pull to deep third man.Axar then ran into two left-handers and trumped both of them. He first dangled one away from Quinton de Kock’s reach and had him carving a catch to backward point. Then, he zipped one away from Saurabh Tiwary from around the wicket, drawing a top edge. Axar also had Suryakumar Yadav holing out later with a dipping full-toss, ending with 3 for 21 in his four overs.5:00

Brathwaite: Mumbai were below par with the bat, made it tough for the bowlers

Nortje and Avesh wreck Mumbai’s middle order
Mumbai’s middle order largely strolled through the middle overs, not managing to score even a single boundary for 35 balls between the 11th and 17th overs. After pounding the deck with heavy lengths in the early exchanges, Nortje cut his pace down to 123kph and had Kieron Pollard chopping on in the 15th over.Avesh yorked both Hardik Pandya and Nathan Coulter-Nile and although the last over, bowled by Ashwin, went for 13 runs, Mumbai were kept to a sub-130 total.Iyer and Ashwin get the job done
That total, however, looked a whole lot bigger once the Capitals lost their top three early. It was Pollard who had launched a familiar Mumbai comeback when he swooped in from mid-on and nailed a direct hit to run out Shikhar Dhawan for 8. Rishabh Pant then chanced his arm and swung his way to 26 off 22 balls before Jayant Yadav – specifically picked, ahead of legspinner Rahul Chahal, to counter the left-handers in Capitals’ line-up – bested him. There might have been jitters in Capitals’ camp when Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult also struck to reduce them to 93 for 6 at the start of the 14th over. Iyer and Ashwin, however, settled them by calmly knocking off ones and twos.Iyer, who had arrived in the powerplay, didn’t hit a boundary until the 17th over, when he swiped Coulter-Nile over midwicket. He meted out similar treatment to Bumrah in the 18th to effectively get the dirty job done.

White-ball coaches to link up post-World Cup, as Collingwood warns about bubble life

Graham Thorpe, England men’s assistant coach, will head up the advance party’s preparations for the Ashes, when the Test specialists and Lions arrive in Australia this weekend.Thorpe will stand in for head coach Chris Silverwood while England’s white-ball squad complete their T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, with the tour party due to undergo 14 days of quarantine on the Gold Coast, before moving to Brisbane to play two intra-squad warm-up matches later in the month. The extended squad, including the 15-man Lions party, is due to arrive in Australia on Saturday, a month in advance of the first Test at the Gabba, starting on December 8. They will undergo three days of hard quarantine, but have been granted an exemption to undertake socially distanced training at Carrara’s Metricon Stadium from November 10-20.Thorpe will be assisted in this initial period by Jon Lewis, the ECB’s elite pace bowling coach, along with Carl Hopkinson (fielding coach), Bruce French (wicketkeeping consultant) and Jonathan Trott (batting consultant), all of whom will remain with the Lions squad. Kent’s Min Patel and Nottinghamshire’s Ant Botha have also been seconded from the county network to assist with the tour.Related

Rory Burns looks to hit top gear with 'decent sort of experience' in Australia

England’s former bowling coach, Troy Cooley – who played a key role in honing England’s pace attack ahead of the 2005 Ashes – is understood to have been recruited to assist with the squad’s build-up to the first Test, with an announcement expected in the coming days. The coaching staff will be completed once the white-ball squad has completed its own quarantine period, with Silverwood due to be joined by Paul Collingwood, Jeetan Patel and James Foster, all of whom are currently in Sharjah preparing for England’s final group match against South Africa on Saturday, with their place in the semi-finals all but certain.Speaking from England’s white-ball camp in the UAE, Collingwood welcomed the chance to get stuck into the next leg of their winter campaign.”We’ve got two exciting parts of our cricketing history and that’s the T20 World Cup and the Ashes,” Collingwood said. “I’m very much looking forward to being a part of it.”I’ll be 100% honest, I’m not great with bubble life, I don’t really enjoy it that much, but I’m hoping Australia is going to have a little bit more freedom out there to go and enjoy the country and the cricket, because to be successful out there is hard work but it’s very satisfying if you do well.”The ECB and Cricket Australia, in consultation with Australia’s state and federal governments, agreed to a number of measures to enable the Ashes to take place this winter in spite of the country’s stringent Covid-19 restrictions, including an allowance for families to join the tour. While Collingwood was grateful for the concessions, he warned that the use of bio-secure environments for international tours could not last indefinitely.”I think world cricket has done really well so far, in terms of how much bubble life we’ve done,” he said. “We all cope in different ways. It’s tough. Being very honest, I’m not sure how much more bubble life world cricket can take – not just the England team, I’m saying world cricket here.”We’re going to have to look closely at mental welfare moving forwards. I don’t think it can continue for too much longer,” Collingwood added. “I think a lot of players and management around the world are close to capacity in terms of how much they can take with this. Hopefully the hierarchy look into it and in the future we find ways that we’re not so restricted.”It puts a lot of pressure on, not just individuals, but families as well. It can be tough at times but we’re here to help each other out in these environments and hopefully have some good friends in here that help you out when you have some dark days.”England Ashes Coaching Team

MANDANTES ADOTAM POSTURA OFENSIVA

ESTREANTE MARCA E GARANTE A VITÓRIA

8/10 Celtic star must permanently replace Rodgers favourite

Celtic made it through to the final of the League Cup on Saturday after they produced a staggeringly impressive performance against Aberdeen at Hampden Park.

The Dons had been unbeaten across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign prior to this cup clash, with their lost competitive loss coming against the Hoops on penalties in the semi-finals of the SFA Cup back in April.

These two sides, of course, also met in the Scottish Premiership earlier this season when Brendan Rodgers’ side chucked away a 2-0 lead at half-time to draw the game 2-2, with both teams level on points in the top-flight as it stands.

The semi-final clash at Hampden Park on Saturday, however, looked like a complete mismatch as the Dons collapsed and Celtic ran out comfortable winners.

Cameron Carter-Vickers opened the scoring with a towering header from a corner, before Daizen Maeda set up Kyogo Furuhashi to score in an almost-empty net just three minutes later.

Daizen Maeda then scored a hat-trick of relatively simple finishes and Nicolas Kuhn rattled in a fantastic curling effort off the crossbar and in to complete the scoring.

One player who may not be too pleased with just how easy the game was without him in from the start is left-back Greg Taylor, who may be in danger of permanently losing his place.

The Scotland international was named on the bench from the start for the semi-final clash and came on for the final 27 minutes of the match, with Celtic scoring one of their six goals in that time.

Taylor missed 17 days with a hamstring injury in October and that provided others with an opportunity to shine in his place, despite a solid start to the season from the former Kilmarnock man.

He has started seven matches in the Premiership this term and contributed with 1.3 key passes per game and three assists from an offensive perspective.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor

Defensively, the full-back has won 53% of his duels but lost 67% of his aerial battles in the division, whilst he has also been dribbled past 0.7 times per game on average.

Meanwhile, the defender has struggled badly in Europe for the Scottish giants, with less-than-convincing performances in the Champions League this term.

As you can see in the table above, Taylor has been a lightweight in his duels in Europe against SK Slovan and Borussia Dortmund, whilst offering little in the way of creativity.

Celtic conceded a whopping six goals in his 135 minutes on the pitch across the two games, which works out as a goal conceded every 22 and a half minutes with him on the field.

This shows that he is far from undroppable and that is why he should be concerned by the form of Alex Valle, his competition at left-back, in recent weeks.

How much Celtic signed Alex Valle for

The Scottish giants swooped to sign the Spanish defender on a season-long loan from Barcelona during the summer transfer window and reportedly agreed to pay a £1.2m to cover his wages.

Rodgers moved to bring in the 20-year-old starlet after he had impressed on loan with Levante in the second division of Spanish football during the 2023/24 campaign.

Valle played 29 times in LaLiga 2 last season and averaged 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game, whilst winning 56% of his duels, which spoke to his defensive qualities.

However, he failed to register a single assist and only averaged 0.6 key passes per game, less than one chance created per match on average, and there may have been a concern that he would not be able to offer as much offensively as Taylor does.

That has not turned out to be an issue, though, as Valle has hit the ground running in Scotland and his performances have been strong enough to potentially convince Rodgers to permanently ditch his favourite.

Why Alex Valle should replace Greg Taylor

Taylor has been one of the Northern Irish manager’s favourites since he returned to Parkhead last year, starting 42 of the club’s 48 Premiership games since the start of last season.

The Scottish full-back, who once claimed that he has improved “insane amounts” during his time in Glasgow, may lose that status because of Valle’s impressive displays.

Against Aberdeen on Saturday, the Spaniard lined up at left-back from the start and was awarded a player rating of 8/10 by GlasgowWorld, a score only bettered by Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda – who both landed 10/10 ratings.

His dynamic runs from left-back and his solid defensive work provided balance alongside Maeda down the left flank, as the Japanese star scored a hat-trick and helped out defensively with his pressing and tracking back.

Valle has also made the most of his opportunities in the Premiership for Celtic since his move on loan from Barcelona, which is another reason why he should permanently replace Taylor as the first-choice left-back moving forward.

As you can see in the table above, Valle has offered more creativity than the Scotsman, relative to how many appearances they have made, and been more reliable defensively.

The Barcelona loanee has not been dribbled past a single time by an opposition winger in the Premiership this season, whilst the former Kilmarnock man has been dribbled past five times, which suggests that forwards have had more joy up against the Rodgers favourite.

Valle, whilst still not perfect in this area, has also won a much higher percentage of his aerial duels and, thus, can offer more as a defensive presence from set-pieces and from crosses to the back post.

Therefore, the 20-year-old defender should permanently replace Taylor in the starting XI because his recent performances suggest that he could offer more in and out of possession for the Hoops.
