Dan Christian’s late withdrawal would have thrown many sides off but Notts still topped North Group

Steven Mullaney was still fielding questions about the Hundred with Nottinghamshire’s Blast quarter-final against Hampshire barely 24 hours away. Flicking the switch from one competition to another is not that easy when the media is still flicking it back again.Even Nottinghamshire, a T20 side to be reckoned with as winners in two of the past four years, were wary about making that instant switch when their loanees to the Hundred reassembled with the rest of a squad who had been consigned to duties for much-weakened sides in the Royal London Cup.It was enough for the Notts media unit – one of the most far-sighted in the country – to put together a welcome-back video with family members stressing how important Notts Outlaws’ success was to them and how proud it made them feel. “It’s a long time since the squad was together,” Mullaney said. “It was really touching to see how much it means to them and how proud everyone is. It’s going to be a really special occasion.”Nottingham quickly took to Trent Rockets in the Hundred, with crowds ranging between 11,483 and 13,688, and there will be no fall-off for the Blast – quite the contrary. Advance sales were more than 13,000 on Tuesday lunchtime, a record, putting the record crowd for a domestic fixture, 14,478, tantalisingly close. If the Hundred energises the Blast, rather than overwhelms it, the counties will be mightily relieved.Related

“The Hundred will get more interest in the Blast in my opinion,” Mullaney suggested. “You will get lads wanting to get into the Hundred by standing out in the Blast. It’s been a real positive for the county game.”They have had 10 home quarter-finals in the last 12 seasons. It is an extraordinary record. But they will need no reminding that the two they lost, in 2012 and 2014, were against Hampshire (who have been boosted by the returns of Liam Dawson and Chris Wood from injury).Mullaney’s summer became all the onerous when Australia threw Notts’ plans into confusion on the eve of the tournament by surprisingly recalling Dan Christian at the age of 38. While Christian, an inspirational T20 leader for Notts, had a thin time on limited-overs tours of the West Indies and Bangladesh, Mullaney inherited leadership responsibilities in the Blast to his role as club captain.”I did have the luxury of 10 days in isolation as a Covid close contact so I had a bit of a rest there,” he said. “But at my age you want to play as much cricket as you can at the highest level you can.”He politely waved aside the suggestion that being a like-for-like player might have made it a little easier. “I think that’s a bit of an injustice to DC saying we’re alike,” he said, “I think he’s a bit better than I am.”It was a late call to take up the T20 captaincy but it was a natural progression as captain of the four-day side. I’ve not tried to change too much. Obviously, every leader has a different style but the blueprint has not changed.”It was a really exciting opportunity for me. I had never captained a T20 before so it probably took me three of four games to get a proper grip on it. You have to make snap decisions and on the chosen day they might be different to Dan’s. I spoke to him quite a bit before the tournament and also throughout the tournament – he is always in touch and always there for you to call.”Mullaney has captained Notts in Dan Christian’s absence•Getty Images
No side has ever successfully defended a T20 title in England, a fact about which Mullaney is regularly reminded. That was enough to make their pre-tournament odds of 5-1 – and their status as favourites – seem a little uninviting. They possessed the most fearsome openers in the land in Alex Hales and Joe Clarke; Ben Duckett, at No. 3, is a three-times winner; and Samit Patel’s admirable skill and durability is thoroughly uplifting for everybody whose gym membership card occasionally gets lost under a family pack of Twix bars. But the bowling? With Harry Gurney retired, Luke Wood lost to Lancashire and no overseas saviour, it just appeared to be a little vulnerable. But in hurried piece of advice offered by Christian before he left helped to set the Outlaws on the right track. He urged Mullaney to put trust in the legspin of Calvin Harrison, which was pretty much an unknown quantity even to Harrison himself. Mullaney was persuaded and Harrison, who had been invited to Trent Bridge as a 2nd XI trialist, went on to top Notts’ wicket-taking charts at a decent average and even got a gig in the Hundred for Manchester Originals, such a dizzying rush to prominence that it was fortunate he had undertaken a psychology degree to help him cope with it.Mullaney said: “Just before DC went back, he said, ‘I think this kid has to play’. I think his numbers have spoken for themselves. He spins it hard whether it be googly or legspinner. What he has got better at is holding his length. He drives it into the pitch. He has had a bit of a whirlwind but he is a very level-headed lad.”Calvin had got a hundred against us for his uni side earlier in the season and we wanted a look at him in the second team more as a batsman, although he did bowl a bit of legspin. Since then he has worked tirelessly.”Alongside Harrison, Matt Carter, the towering offie, and Patel, as irrepressible as ever, have seen Notts through to another home quarter-final.”Carts for a few years has been a mainstay of the T20 side,” Mullaney said. “He bowls often at difficult times during the Powerplay. If you ask other countries one of the hardest grounds to bowl at would be Trent Bridge so his stats speak volumes about how well he has done.”He recalled a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo about how statistics suggest home advantage does not matter in a Blast quarter-final, but perhaps it matters a little bit more at Trent Bridge because of the misshapen outfield – and anyway, considering that Nottinghamshire only ended a three-year winless streak in the Championship in May, and have since reached Division One in the culmination to the Championship season, a home quarter all adds to a sense of a club in good health.”We have had a tough three years and I have been captain of that. It has been really tough, not winning a game. I have often said that I believed I was the right man to lead the side and we had the talent to turn it round. We have backed that up this season with performances.”We’ve had a lot of home quarter-finals and it always feel special. We have players who have performed well under pressure but we will have to be at our best to win.”
Whilst Leeds United eased past Coventry City in a dominant 3-0 victory, their celebrations may be short-lived, with those at Elland Road now left hoping that a star man has avoided an ACL injury.
Leeds injury news
The Whites already entered their game against Coventry without the likes of Maximilian Wober and Manor Solomon in two frustrating blows for Daniel Farke, who could do without mounting injury struggles. However, in the face of those absences, it was still business as usual. Farke’s side swept Coventry to one side, courtesy of goals from Wilfried Gnonto, Jayden Bogle and Joel Piroe in an excellent display.
Having taken all three points, Leeds now sit fifth and just two points below West Bromwich Albion at the top of the Championship, who lost for the first time this season in a shock result against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
With just how tight things are at the top, Leeds could do with a full squad to choose from, but injuries to Solomon, Wober and now potentially another star man may leave Farke scrambling for options.
According to BBC Sport’s Adam Pope (as reported by The Leeds Press), Leeds are now sweating over concerns that Ethan Ampadu suffered an ACL injury against Coventry. The defensive midfielder was forced off at half-time, having initially attempted to run his injury off – perhaps only making matters worse by doing so.

Farke revealed that the £40,000-a-week star will now be assessed, telling reporters: “Our most important player. We have to wait for the assessment.”
If Ampadu’s injury is long-term, then there’s no doubt that Leeds will face a major problem in pursuit of automatic promotion, with their Welshman a crucial part of Farke’s side, as reiterated by the manager himself.
"Important" Ampadu will be a big miss
A doubt for the Norwich City game on Tuesday at the very least, Ampadu’s absence will provide Farke’s side with a frustrating blow in every game that the midfielder misses, whether that’s just a handful of fixtures or for months to come.
The former Chelsea man has finally found his place in senior football, becoming Farke’s most important player in a Leeds side gunning for a return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.
Prior to coming off against Coventry, the club captain had played almost every minute of Championship football this season, starting from the off in every single fixture in all competitions so far this season. One of the first names on the teamsheet, Leeds must now ask the likes of Ao Tanaka to step up in place of the Welshman.
The summer arrival replaced Ampadu after his injury last time out, and he could be asked to do a similar job against Norwich and beyond. Replacing such an important player will be a near-impossible task, but if there’s any time for the Whites’ summer business to pay dividends, they’ll hope it’s in the next few weeks.

New Zealand and South Africa will be England’s Test opponents in the 2022 home season, while India will return for a six-match white-ball tour, as the ECB confirmed the dates and venues for next summer’s men’s international fixtures.New Zealand, the current holders of the ICC Test mace after winning the inaugural World Test Championship final against India at the Ageas Bowl earlier this year, will contest a three-match LV= Insurance series in June, 12 months on from beating England 1-0 in a two-match encounter this summer.Unlike the last two series involving the teams, both of which were additional bilateral engagements, New Zealand’s latest tour will form part of the WTC calculations ahead of the next final in 2023.The New Zealand series will begin at Lord’s on Thursday, June 2 before continuing at Trent Bridge (June 10-14) and Emerald Headingley (June 23-27).England will then contest all of their home white-ball matches in July, with a three-match Vitality T20I series beginning at Emirates Old Trafford on July 1 before matches at Trent Bridge (July 3) and the Ageas Bowl (July 6). A three-match Royal London Series follows with matches at Edgbaston (July 9), the Kia Oval (July 12) and Lord’s (July 14).South Africa’s tour will begin with a three-match ODI series in the north of England, at Emirates Riverside (July 19), Emirates Old Trafford (July 22) and Emerald Headingley (July 24).ESPNcricinfo Ltd
A T20I series will then follow at Bristol (July 27), Cardiff (July 28) and The Ageas Bowl (July 31).The men’s summer schedule concludes with three Tests against South Africa. Lord’s will host the first LV= Insurance Test (August 17-21) before the series moves to Edgbaston (August 25-29) and the Kia Oval (September 8-12).”It has been a scintillating summer of cricket and so good to see crowds back packing out venues later this summer,” Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, said. “For next summer, I am pleased to be able to confirm three high-quality men’s international touring teams for 2022, starting with a three-Test LV= Insurance Series against World Test Champions New Zealand.”We also look forward to India returning for two white-ball series before we host South Africa for what promises to be hard-fought series across three formats, including three LV= Insurance Test Matches.”It has also been confirmed that 2022 Vitality Blast Finals Day will be staged at Edgbaston on Saturday July 16. Further details for the 2022 England Women’s home schedule and the structure of the men’s and women’s domestic seasons will be announced in due course.

+CONFIRA O CAMINHO DO PALMEIRAS NO MUNDIAL DE CLUBES

Football has evolved a lot over the last few years, with the game seemingly becoming more technical than ever before. Players with brute strength are no longer commonplace, but rather a priceless commodity these days.
That means there are more players famed for their speed at the top level of the game. But who is the fastest player out there? Unfortunately, data collection for this is not exactly widespread, but we have scoured databases and websites from a variety of locations to discover who has recorded the fastest speeds this calendar year.
For this list, we’ve looked at the top 15 players in football. Leagues such as the English Premier League and German Bundesliga have this data easily accessible, so it may be skewed in their players’ favour for the moment. However, with a bit of digging, we have still determined a top 15 featuring players from across Europe and beyond.
All stats correct as of 15th October 2024.

Harry Wilson was Fulham’s fastest player in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, posting a top speed of 36.23 km/h during their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in April.
This wasn’t enough to rank among the highest speeds reached in the league last season, but given only a handful across some of Europe’s top leagues managed to reach 36 km/h, it’s still mightily impressive.
14 Erling Haaland (Manchester City) Top speed: 36.32 km/h
Finding out Erling Haaland was Manchester City’s fastest player is no real surprise, more perhaps that quite a few are capable of topping the Norwegian’s electric speed.
He recorded a top speed of 36.32 km/h last season during a 5-1 drubbing of Wolves where Haaland scored four – including two from the penalty spot.

13 Ansgar Knauff (Eintracht Frankfurt) Top speed: 36.38 km/h
Frankfurt winger Ansgar Knauff became one of the fastest players in Bundesliga history when he posted a lung-busting speed of 36.38 km/h towards the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Knauff placed third overall last season in the German top flight, with the former Borussia Dortmund youngster now strutting his stuff for Dino Toppmoller’s impressive outfit.
12 Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) Top speed: 36.41 km/h
One of only two players to run faster than Knauff in Germany last season was Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.
His 36.41 km/h run in May was the joint-fastest in the Bundesliga last term. Only Heidenheim’s Eren Dinkci could keep up with Davies, though his effort came before the turn of the year.
Interestingly, Davies has previously run faster – he clocked 36.51 km/h back in 2020 during a game where Bayern secured the title.
11 Moussa Diaby (Al-Ittihad) Top speed: 36.42 km/h
Moussa Diaby may well be one of the quickest players currently in the Saudi Pro League, having made a summer switch to Al-Ittihad just a year after joining Aston Villa.
He made his mark in his one full Premier League season by running defences ragged with genuinely frightening pace – his 36.42 km/h clocked up against West Ham back in March has only been topped by two top-flight players in the current PL campaign.
10 Kylian Mbappe (Real Madrid) Top speed: 36.5 km/h
Kylian Mbappe was almost always going to feature at some point – even if reliable Ligue 1 data is hard to come by when it comes to top speeds.
Luckily, the Real Madrid star showcased his quick-footedness during the summer’s European Championship, where he was the fastest player at the tournament.
His 36.5 km/h was comfortably higher than his closest competitor, Ferran Torres of Spain.

Paris Saint-Germain may have bid farewell to Mbappe in the summer, but they still have some serious speed demons at the Parc des Princes.
Achraf Hakimi has recorded the fastest speed so far in this season’s Champions League, and only two players were able to better his run of 36.5 km/h in the entirety of last year’s competition.

8 Nathan Ngoumou (Borussia Monchengladbach) Top speed: 36.53 km/h
Nathan Ngoumou’s lightning run earlier this season was the fifth-fastest in Bundesliga history, edging out the likes of Davies, Diaby and Hakimi from their respective stints in Germany.
The Frenchman has the second-fastest run in the Bundesliga this term at the time of writing, and given who he’s up against, that’s some considerable running power.
7 Carlos Forbs (Wolves) Top speed: 36.6 km/h
At Molineux for this season on loan from Ajax, Portuguese winger Carlos Forbs has literally hit the ground running at Wolves.
According to the Premier League, his 36.6 km/h run from earlier this season is the second-fastest since the start of the campaign.
6 Sirlord Conteh (Heidenheim) Top speed: 36.67 km/h
Sirlord Conteh has had a rapid rise not too dissimilar to his own team. Just two years ago, Conteh was playing third-tier football for Magdeburg, and has recently featured in the Conference League for Heidenheim.
He also began the campaign by recording the fastest-ever speed by a Bundesliga player – 36.67 km/h – during a 4-0 win over Augsburg, pipping Karim Adeyemi’s record by 0.02 km/h.

Meu objetivo é conquistar o acesso e ajudar o clube a voltar à elite do futebol gaúcho, fazendo história no clube. O objetivo está claro em minha cabeça: quero ajudar o clube a brigar em todas as competições que disputar em 2022.
Some one-on-one sessions with South Australia sports psychologist David Steventon over the last 12 months have helped McGrath simplify her game
AAP22-Oct-2021

Tahlia McGrath credits her meteoric rise to being the form allrounder of Australian women’s cricket partly to her sports psychologist.Player of the series against India earlier this month, McGrath has started the WBBL with a bang in Adelaide Strikers’ unbeaten start to the tournament. But the 25-year-old is the first to admit she’s had to learn that you can’t put an old head on young shoulders. An Australian debutant at 21 in the 2017 Ashes, McGrath managed just one international between that series and the start of this summer. She has made the most of her recall through injuries, averaging 79 with the bat against India while also taking four wickets. That came before scores of 42 and 50 not out for Strikers, as well as 3 for 17 in the opening game against Sydney Thunder. It’s made her a near-certain pick for the Ashes, despite the impending returns of Rachael Haynes, Jess Jonassen Megan Schutt.”It’s taken me a while and it’s been a frustrating journey with lots of little glimpses and starts, but not consistent enough,” McGrath said. “But it’s just been simplifying how I go about my cricket.”I’ve matured a lot as a batter and learned how to construct my innings a lot better, especially in T20 cricket. That’s literally keeping it as simple as possible, playing to my strengths and not over-complicating things which I have fallen into the trap of before.”McGrath said her biggest change had come from sitting down with South Australia’s sports psychologist David Steventon over the past 12 months.”Initially I was a bit hesitant, thinking I’m not sure how much I can get a benefit out of that,” McGrath said. “But he did a few group sessions with us, I liked what he said and had a few one-on-one sessions and it’s gone from there.”Cricket is such a mental game that I thought why not tap into that aspect of it? So much we can get caught up in our own minds and especially when we are batting, over-complicating things.”It’s part of what she believes has helped make her more patient and willing to time her run with the bat.”In the past, I took unnecessary risks early…I was getting too caught up in hitting boundaries,” McGrath said. “It’s just been about trying to get into my innings before I go to the next gear. I’m more mature and learning how to structure my innings a lot better in T20 cricket now.”
