Rangers hit gold on star who’s worth 4x more than Tavernier in 2024 money

Glasgow Rangers captain James Tavernier has endured a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign for the Ibrox side.

The defender looks a shadow of his former self, with his struggles compounded by another poor Old Firm display against Celtic on the weekend, as they strolled to a 3-0 victory.

Daizen Maeda got the better of him once again, using his pace down the right-hand side to terrorise the Englishman. Could his time at the club be coming to an end?

James Tavernier’s future at Rangers

Tavernier’s future was up in arms during the summer transfer window, as several clubs were looking to lure him away from Ibrox, with interest coming from former Rangers managers Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, in charge of Al-Ettifaq and Besiktas respectively.

No move materialised before the transfer deadline, yet journalist Graeme Bailey has provided a fresh update surrounding his future, saying: “Exclusive – James Tavernier offered Rangers exit route following Old Firm abuse. Clubs in Turkey and Qatar ready to make moves.”

Could this see the 32-year-old make an unlikely move away from the Gers sooner rather than later? Or will he remain at the club until the end of his current contract?

James Tavernier’s season in numbers so far

Last year, the Englishman scored a career-high best of 24 goals throughout the campaign, while also registering 12 assists in all competitions.

This made him the highest scorer in the squad, yet despite this incredible individual season for the club, they could only win the League Cup as Tavernier’s mentality came into question during the latter months of the season.

Rangers had excellent chances to win the Scottish Cup and Premiership title, but suffered damaging losses to Celtic, Ross County and Motherwell during the run-in.

This lethargy has carried into the current season, with Tavernier failing to really inspire his teammates thus far, winning just three of their opening seven games of the campaign.

Tavernier has failed to score a single goal during these games, while registering just two assists in the process, as his attacking output has dropped significantly from last term.

The right-back has managed to create three big chances while averaging 2.5 key passes per game in the top flight, but those appear to be wasted by those playing in front of him.

He could well be on the wane as a player, especially with his output in front of goal dipping dramatically. This could see Clement having to make a decision on his future sooner rather than later, as January could represent the final chance for the Gers to sell him for a decent fee.

Whatever happens, he has been a wonderful servant to the club, but it looks as though the end is nigh, and it is time for the Light Blues to cash in.

James Tavernier

Hopefully, a solid transfer fee is received, similar to the sort that Walter Smith managed to wrangle for defender Alan Hutton back in 2008.

How much Rangers sold Alan Hutton for in 2024 money

Following a stunning start to the 2007/08 season which saw Rangers perform well in both Europe and domestically, Hutton soon became a transfer target for Premier League clubs.

Alan Hutton

Towards the end of the January transfer window, Smith accepted Tottenham Hotspur’s £9m offer to take the defender down south, representing a sensational profit considering he emerged through the youth ranks at Ibrox.

This fee was clearly too good to turn down, allowing Smith to bolster his squad during the summer of 2008 as he ramped up for a tilt at the league title that season.

In 2024, money, however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – this £9m transfer fee would be worth a staggering £29.8m if he made the same move just now.

This transfer fee is currently over four times more than what Tavernier is worth at the time of writing. According to Transfermarkt, the captain’s market value is currently standing at €6.5m (£5.5m), clearly demonstrating how much the club hit the jackpot by moving on Hutton when they did.

If Clement can get anywhere near the fee Hutton was sold for, then he would be doing extremely well, no doubt about that.

Alan Hutton’s Rangers statistics

The right-back made his debut during the 2002/03 season for the Light Blues, before gaining more of a chance in the next campaign under Alex McLeish, although it was a poor one for the Ibrox side, who finished trophyless.

The 2004/05 campaign saw Hutton establish himself as the main right-back during the first half of the season, but a leg break against Kilmarnock in February 2005 meant he didn’t play a part in either the League Cup final or the title run-in.

Alan Hutton

Once he recovered, he made a total of 90 appearances for the club before Spurs came calling in 2008, leaving after making more than 100 competitive appearances for the Light Blues since making his debut in 2002.

He was praised highly by former assistant coach Ally McCoist, who said of the defender: “I have no doubt Alan is destined for great things but I believe those great things can be with Rangers. We don’t want to lose players of his quality.”

Unfortunately, barring a rare occurrence, selling players for this type of fee has hardly been done since Hutton departed all those years ago.

While Tavernier is approaching 33, his statistics over the previous few years should mean Clement can place a decent valuation on his head if any clubs continue to sniff around the captain.

Whatever happens, Tavernier must improve his performances between now and the start of 2025, otherwise he could even be dropped by the management team should these poor displays persist over the coming weeks.

Lungi Ngidi dukes it with the Dukes ball as South Africa claim upper hand

Fast bowler hopes for more opportunities with seamer-friendly ball after five-wicket haul

Lungi Ngidi hopes to have more opportunity to bowl with the Dukes ball after it helped him earn his second Test five-for in St Lucia. Ngidi, who took 6 for 39 against India on debut in January 2018, rated the Dukes ball as more seamer-friendly than the Kookaburra, used in South Africa, or India’s SG, because of the way it behaves.”I prefer the Dukes ball. It stays harder and moves around a lot more,” Ngidi said after the first day’s play. “The Kookaburra ball tends to get a bit soft and once it gets soft, it doesn’t really swing and you try to look for reverse swing. The SG gets scuffed up really quick and it’s a really hard ball to maintain. But the Dukes ball is really a test of skill. Once you can get the wrist position right and hone in on your area, you can be very successful with this ball. Having bowled with it now, I hope I bowl with it for many, many years.”Ngidi had never used the Dukes ball in a Test match before, having not played any Tests in England or in the Caribbean before this tour. He did have access to it when practising in South Africa and said the training group was “trying everything to control that ball,” and showed off the results of their persistence inside two sessions on the first day.South Africa dismissed West Indies for 97, for their second sub-100 total since 2004, through a combination of aggression and discipline that Ngidi explained could be difficult to get right in favourable conditions. “You can get carried away, especially when it’s nipping around and swinging like that,” he said.In the morning session, South Africa were anything but over-excited by conditions. While Kagiso Rabada and Ngidi kept the brakes on West Indies, Anrich Nortje tore through the top order. “My role definition has been very clear – it’s been to make sure I keep one end quiet. We do have some really quick bowlers and a lot of batsmen were struggling with them so for me to give them nothing was part of the plan,” Ngidi said.Related

In Kagiso Rabada's dip is the story of South Africa's decline in Tests

Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje set the quicks agenda on 14-wicket first day

Nkrumah Bonner out of St Lucia Test with concussion

His morning’s work was seven overs for 10 runs and he returned after lunch to take five wickets for nine runs, having changed ends in between whiles. “I felt more comfortable from the other end and my rhythm clicked,” he said. “It’s been a work in progress. I had to work very hard in the gym, on fitness, and the most important thing was the skill side of things and being able to swing the ball away from batters.”Ngidi celebrated his second five-for with an emotional gesture to the heavens and then settled in to watch West Indies’ enjoy some, albeit not the same, success. Teenage debutant Jayden Seales, playing in just his second first-class match, took 3 for 34 and Ngidi was particularly impressed with his performance. “I was keeping a close eye on him. His seam presentation is what I tried to do when we were bowling,” Ngidi said. “He has got a great wrist behind the ball, a very clean action and it seems like he can run in all day, so he is a danger. It’s a very exciting future for the West Indies with him in the line-up.”South Africa will hope it’s not too exciting, just yet. Their lead of 31 is still some way behind what Ngidi thinks could be match-winning, especially on a surface that will continue to suit the quicks. “On this wicket you are never really in. Maybe a lead of 150-200, we’ll take that,” he said. “But it’s still moving around a bit so any lead we can get, we will take as bowlers.”

Chelsea star was ‘like Hazard’ in 2023, now he’s scored fewer than Chilwell

While there have been signs of promise under Enzo Maresca to date – including the 6-2 triumph away at Molineux – it's fair to say that this remains far from the Chelsea of old, far from the team that regularly fought for European and domestic glory.

If the club are ever to return to such lofty heights – having claimed two Champions Leagues prior to Todd Boehly's ill-fated arrival – then young Cole Palmer will likely be at the heart of it, with the 22-year-old having made a stunning start to life in west London.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

An eye-watering £40m capture from Manchester City last summer, the playmaker has since chalked up 45 goals and assists in just 50 games for the club, including five goal involvements from as many outings this season.

Such an impact has even led to comparisons to a figure of Chelsea folklore, with talkSPORT pundit Jermaine Pennant dubbing him an "Eden Hazard of the past", following last season's 4-3 win over Manchester United.

On the early evidence of the current campaign, Palmer is unlikely to be weighed down by such lofty comparisons, ensuring he won't follow in the footsteps of one of his floundering teammates…

Chelsea's next Hazard

For all the grief thrown at Boehly and co for their scattergun transfer approach, there have been a handful of notable success stories in recent times, not least the signing of Palmer, as well as £32m colleague Nicolas Jackson – who now has 19 goals in 48 games for the club.

One man who certainly does not fall into that category is Mykhaylo Mudryk, with the former Shakhtar Donetsk man having done little to warrant his £88.5m price tag.

Having fought off rivals Arsenal for the Ukrainian's signature back in January 2023, however, the Blues must have thought they'd struck gold following the winger's first outing away at Anfield later that month.

Brought on for the closing stages of that goalless draw, the in-demand talent showcased just what the fuss was about, having regularly looked to penetrate the home defence with his breathtaking speed and dribbling prowess.

Such was the nature of his cameo that Mudryk even made a strong impression on Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Carragher, with the former Liverpool hero describing him as "very Hazard-like", due to his "quick feet" and "low centre of gravity".

Carragher even went as far as to suggest that the youngster could prove to be an "absolute nightmare" in the division – in some sense, that prophecy has come true…

Mudryk's record at Chelsea

No, Mudryk has not been a thorn in the side of defences up and down the country. Instead, he's proven a 'nightmare' for a string of managers at Stamford Bridge, all of whom have been unable to get him firing.

In fact, despite having previously recorded 29 goals and assists during his time at Shakhtar, the 23-year-old currently has just seven goals and five assists to his name in 62 games for the west Londoners.

To put that into perspective, teammate Ben Chilwell has eclipsed that record from left-back, with the former Leicester City man chalking up nine goals and 12 assists for the club, albeit from 109 games.

Unfortunately for Chilwell, a succession of injury-disrupted campaigns – as well as the arrival of Maresca – has left him out in the cold, although it looks like Mudryk may well be joining him before too long if the wideman's limp form continues.

It's fair to say that the latest alteration in the dugout hasn't exactly sparked a change in fortunes for the 24-cap international, as he was notably hooked at the break during the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Maresca insisting that he was "not happy" with the winger's performance.

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

With the likes of Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho all arriving this summer – and with Christopher Nkunku now back to full fitness – the competition for Mudryk on that left flank is fierce, thus only weakening his already fragile position in the squad.

Unless there is a drastic change this season, the Blues – as well as Carragher – will continue to remain red-faced over their costly capture.

Leeds nearly signed amazing EFL star under Cellino, they got Botaka instead

Leeds United have experienced many transfer near misses in recent years, with the Whites unable to get a deal over the line for many a top star to join their club, before they then went on to excel at the lucky club that won their services.

Amazingly, around the same time the Whites would eventually land a deal to win Joel Piroe from Swansea City, the West Yorkshire outfit were also reportedly keen on Coventry City sharpshooter Victor Gyokeres to improve their attacking positions, but ultimately stumbled in their advances to pick him up.

Former Leeds owner Massimo Cellino.

Many potentially spectacular deals were also nipped in the bud by ex-Whites chairman Massimo Cellino when he was the controversial owner of the club, including one move that would’ve seen Sheffield Wednesday star Fernando Forestieri join the ranks in 2015, before he went on to become an iconic player for the Owls.

When Leeds tried to sign Forestieri

It’s fair to say that business in and out of the door at Leeds during the eventful ownership period of Cellino was scattergun, with the Whites prone to splashing the cash on many a dud.

The 2015/16 summer window was no exception, with Leeds snapping up some forgettable personnel such as central midfielder Toumani Diagouraga and former Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, among other purchases.

Cellino could have entered into his side’s good books, however, with the statement buy of Forestieri, who would go on to score some unbelievable strikes for Wednesday like the outrageous goal above, away from ever joining Leeds.

The entertaining attacker was very close to joining the Whites during that same underwhelming window, having set the Championship alight with Watford during the 2014/15 campaign, with five goals and six assists registered from 24 league contests.

But, a deal would never get over the line in the end – despite originally agreeing an undisclosed fee – as Leeds’ loss was Wednesday’s major gain, with Cellino intervening by stating that the mercurial South American forward didn’t possess the ‘right mentality’ to be a success at Elland Road.

Instead, right at the death, Leeds opted to sign Jordan Botaka, in a switch that would end up being a failure to further add salt to the gaping Forestieri wound.

Botaka's time at Leeds

Billed as being an equally exciting forward player in the mould of the 5 foot 8 attacker, having netted 12 goals for Excelsior Rotterdam before heading to England, Botaka would be a huge letdown.

The now 31-year-old winger would never even score a goal when playing in West Yorkshire, with only one assist also coming his way from 14 Leeds appearances, before he was allowed to leave for Sint-Truidense in Belgium in 2017 for free.

Whilst Botaka would seriously struggle for his new employers, Forestieri would undoubtedly shine at Hillsborough, with an unbelievable 15 goals and eight assists notched up by the explosive Argentinian during his debut season at the Owls, helping his side reach the play-offs.

Garry Monk would even go on to label the former Watford man as “devastating” when he was at the helm of the Owls as manager, with Forestieri still recognised as a modern-day great in Wednesday quarters today.

Whereas, most Leeds fans would have wiped Botaka’s dreadful spell from their memory and just put it down as another error typical of the comical Cellino era.

Fast forwarding to now, supporters will pray that the likes of Largie Ramazani and the other new signings made by Farke settle in well to their new environment, away from falling victim to any more costly mistakes in the transfer market.

Cost £12.8m: Leeds could now lose “immense” star for nothing

Leeds United will not want to lose this gem for nothing.

Eve Jones and Georgia Davis set up Sparks' rout of Lightning

Central Sparks 84 for 4 (G Davies 31) beat Lightning 81 (G Davis 4-12, Jones 3-14) by six wicketsCentral Sparks broke their duck at the third attempt in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, winning a low-scoring contest by six wickets with one over to spare as Lightning suffered a third defeat.Gwen Davies made 31, Eve Jones an unbeaten 27 and Thea Brookes 21 off 14 balls after Lightning had been bowled out for 81 in 19.1 overs.Off-spinner Georgia Davis, with 4 for 12, and all-rounder Jones, who took 3 for 14 with her left-arm seamers, each posted T20 career-bests with the ball.More than half of Lightning’s total runs were scored by their last-wicket pair as Shachi Pai and 19-year-old Sophie Munro put on 41 in 33 balls, Pai scoring 18 from 21, Munro unbeaten on 20 from 16 deliveries, including two nicely-executed offside boundaries.Munro then took 2 for 10 with her right-arm seamers in a Lightning attack that battled hard to contain the Sparks but ultimately had too little to defend. The 10th-wicket pair apart, only one other Lightning batter made it into double figures, albeit on a slow pitch that made it difficult to time the ball.Davis’s four dismissals were almost carbon copies as Abbey Freeborn, Teresa Graves, Sonia Odedra and Lucy Higham took it in turn to be out leg before, attempting to sweep.Jones profited from leading edges as Kathryn Bryce and Michaela Kirk found fielders on the off side, picking up her third success when Kirstie Gordon chipped back a return catch.Earlier, Issy Wong took a wicket with her second ball and another with her eighth as Beth Harmer and Sarah Bryce were bowled. With Lightning 40 for 9, Sparks might have envisaged a very early finish but it looked a more even contest once Davis and Jones had completed their stints. Pai eventually fell when she went aerial to Stephanie Butler’s off-spin but failed to clear mid-off.Sparks found it hard to get going and were six behind Lightning at nine for two from their Powerplay, having lost Marie Kelly and Milly Home in a double-wicket maiden from Munro.Davies and Jones were patient in adding 46 off 12 overs but when Higham had Davies stumped for 31, a requirement of 30 in as many balls could have been tricky. However, Brookes launched Gordon through midwicket for four and hit Odedra for six and four to change the picture as the 17th over went for 14 runs. Brookes swung and missed one from Bryce but with eight needed off 16 balls a couple of boundaries from Jones finished the job.
